All those characters show up in Sandman. That's my point. Yes, it grew beyond that, just like Swamp Thing and Doom Patrol.

They're still superhero comics, as they feature superheroes.

Like I said, there's only one sensible way to categorize comics: GOOD and BAD.

To dismiss Umbrella Academy because it's a Superhero comic is like dismissing Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind because it's Science Fiction.
Finished my marathon of Gaiman's Sandman today. I have to agree that it's a superhero much in the same way as Thor and Watchmen are superhero comics. Sure it transcends its genre, and there is fantasy and mythology in there as well, but I like the hero parts best.

I'm on to Cerebus. Is it worthwile reading the letters column?

If you love Sandman, try Lucifer next. While i agree sandman was great, Lucifer appealed more to my taste and had a tighter narrative thread through the whole series

Hey guys, big comic book fan,
can someone reccomend me something that is cyberpunkish that has been out for a while?

I have read:
first few issues of DMZ
Hellblazer - loved it
Invincible/Walking Dead
Global Frequency - wish there was more than just the 2 small volumes
Other stuff that I cant remember right now

How is the comic series of The Losers? Watched the movie tonight and loved it.

A lot more action and some would argue hokie ending, but I liked it. I haven't seen the movie yet, but it's a lot more brutal than the PG-13 fare would allow.

Hey there! I'm looking for some good european comics/BD! Preferably adventures or clever stories with detailed drawings. :) Do you have recommendations?

The Nausicaa manga is so awesome...There must be something "similar" in terms of style, ambitions and details from Europe. When I was young I had a comic catalogue that listed all sorts of sci-fi or fantasy comics from europe. Back then I didn't care for that stuff. :/

I read and liked:
-Bone (Jeff Smith, not American, I know but it feels kind of european!)
-Bird of Time (Loisel)

That's it. I only have those and a Batman comic..The rest are manga books.

Blacksad has an interesting story, great drawings, and it's from Europe (Spain). Highly recommended :)

Google'd it. Looks great, I really like the use of colors. Definitely on my list now.

Thorgal looks interesting, too. Has anyone read it?

Exactly. GAF needs to get into this series. So good.

Looks promising as well. Is the story any good? I need more adventures. Bone was awesome...Why can't there be more like this out there?

Several things come to mind immediately for older cyberpunkish titles, most of which are manga.

Transmetropolitan - Warren Ellis's take on the near future stars the cyberpunk equivalent of Hunter S. Thompson who has returned to The City to take on political corruption. 60 issues and it's done, with a terrific ride the entire time. If you liked Global Frequency, here's more Ellis waiting for you.

Akira - Half the world has seen the movie by now, but if you've never read the manga you're really missing out. A more coherent (and complete) plot, wonderful artwork that combines intricate detail with a clean design sense, and all manner of psychic hell breaking loose. Okay, so the movie had plenty of that last bit, but there's even more of it in the comic. Also, you know you want Kaneda's bike. This has been inexplicably out of print for a while, but it's being reissued with the first volume out and the next few en route. 6 volumes and it's done.

Ghost in the Shell - Masamune Shirow's most successful manga release, Ghost in the Shell looks absolutely fantastic and is a showcase for Shirow's art, while also having a plot that, if not wildly coherent, holds up reasonably well while also being removed enough from the movies and such that, even if you've seen them, you'll get a kick out of this. It's about a group of cops who act as a sort of cybernetic crimes SWAT team, set in a future where full brain transfers to robot bodies are relatively commonplace. This is a single volume, though if you enjoy it some of Shirow's other near-future SF manga such as Appleseed (four volumes) and Black Magic (one volume), though you should be warned that the storytelling in each ranges from puzzling to incomprehensible. But, man, the art is just fantastic, and for the stories being told - small unit combat teams in high tech societies - it's easy to forgive the shortcomings in their plots.

Eden: It's An Endless World! - Finally, I have to pimp a great title that, alas, hasn't been completely translated into English and isn't necessarily guaranteed to get across the finish line. That said, Hiroki Endo's Eden is an astonishingly good cyberpunk comic. With art clearly influenced by Otomo's work on Akira, Endo tells the story of a post-apocalyptic (I sense a theme here) world where mankind has recovered from a deadly virus and the global balance of power has shifted. Our hero is a young man with ties to the new movers and shakers who finds himself involved with a mercenary team (I sense a theme here) and their incredibly violent battles against cybernetic enemies (and worse), with plenty of behind the scenes political wrangling and criminal activity to keep things interesting. I cannot recommend this title highly enough, even if there's a chance you'll never have the opportunity to read the whole thing. Dark Horse has released twelve of eighteen volumes in the US and it's one of the best comics on the stands, period. Check it out.

Been getting back into comics after a few years off, wanted to give this thread a bump. So many recommendations in this thread I want to catch up with.

As a lover of comic strips as well, there seem to be some very nice collection series coming out lately or coming out soon. Figured I'd cover some of them since they haven't been yet...

Pogo: The Complete Daily & Sunday Comic Strips
First volume due late September. Finally the deluxe treatment for my favorite strip ever!

Bloom County: The Complete Library
vols. 1 and 2 currently out, #3 due in November.

40: A Doonesbury Retrospective
From the same publisher that did the super slick complete Calvin & Hobbes and Far Side sets. Of course this won't be complete, it'll have 1800 of Doonesbury's 14,000+ strips, but that's enough for me since I've never really cared for it.

Nancy (John Stanley Library)
Collecting the comic book Nancys. Two volumes out.

Nancy Is Happy: Complete Dailies
Collecting the comic strip Nancys. First volume Nov 10.

E.C. Segar's Popeye
4 volumes out, 5th in December. Popeye is more of a dick in the strips than in the cartoons. Very fun.

And a ridiculous amount more. Dick Tracy, Little Orphan Annie, Prince Valiant, Peanuts, Conan, Blondie, Dennis the Menace, etc. I find few things more enjoyable than lying down in bed and reading a fat book of comics strips for hours.

Buddy of mine turned me on the Locke and Key and I read the first TPB over the weekend. Now I'm kinda scared of echos. Fark.

Here's his rendition of Dodge/Echo
