Nook Color dethrones Kindle as the most popular e-reader

How do we know that? The Touch just came out less than a month ago.

Pew Insight showed that the Nook Touch was taking a backseat to the Nook tablet. It is suggested that this is the reason Amazon has held off on even showing their tablet. It would seem Amazon is waiting for a significant dip in sales of the Kindle 3 to release their tablet. This would allow them to sell the tablet for a few months until sales stabilize and then release the Kindle 4 and thus avoiding cannibalization. If there's a breakthrough with the still crude color eInk tech, Amazon may look to implement it.

Meanwhile, Apple has already started to R&D a way to implement eInk into the iPad.
Who knows how the hell that would work

fuck that shit. worst selling point in history.

You can get those same offers from where?

Plus, the ads do not interfere with any of the reading itself.

You can constantly get $20 Amazon gift cards for $10? Where?

That specific deal pops up sporadically all the time online. You just have to take the opportunity and grab it when arises. I've gotten a $20 Amazon Gift card for $10 at least six times already.

Ad plastered e-reader is just terrible. Can't believe I'm discussing whether that's a reason to buy it over a non ad e-reader. Ya'll can keep that garbage

CM7 Nook Color is awesome, although the only reading I do on it is through the Kindle app.

Wait ... come again?

How did B&N seriously fuck up? The skipped bringing out a new generation e-ink display because infra-red touch overlays weren't available ... and instead brought out a mini-tablet that has been received quite well.

Fast forward to today and they have brought out a new e-ink, and it's actually Amazon that's taking the year off to work on tablets. If anything, Amazon is the one playing the role of reactionary ... and 'seriously fucked up'.

What are you talking about?

Normally I'd be all against ads and stuff, like Hulu Plus (fuck that shit), but I do have to admit in this case, the ads are actually pretty nice deals and they seem to be on a fairly regular basis so I can definitely see a reason why it's not such a bad idea. If it were straight up ads, then ya, but these are actually deals being offered. Heck even the Nook Touch has ads. In fact the Home screen is one big ad. But at least they offer an occaisional cafe deal.

I'm subscribed to Amazon and have never gotten these deals. The only one i know that has done the same offer has been the groupon one.

You are over-exaggerating. The ads only pop up when you go on stand by and when you are browsing for which book to read. They are not annoying at all.

Yeah, new ads come up every 3 days or so. There are the ones i have taken advantage off:

Buy $10 in kindle books and get $10 amazon credit (basically $10 free to buy books).
$20 amazon gift card for $10
$25 off $50 in tools (great deal specially for father's day)
I sold the 20% off any hdtv code for $35 bucks
$15 off any kindle skin
$10 off any videogame (i bought a $10 videogame so it ended up being free)
I traded a baby offer coupon for another $10 off any videogame code

Tell me how those ads aren't great.

I've already made $197 in amazon giftcards from my kindle, that doesn't include the savings I get from the codes I used up. Sold my HDTV code for $150, roku x2 for $20, $7 for for a cheap book i bought and 2 $20 amazon gc for $10. Wish I had bought more when it came out. That doesn't include the additional warranty for the $10 extra I got for switching to the ad version. The ads are unobtrusive and makes me use my Kindle more.

Isn't this a good thing Amazon is finally being pushed by a competitor. I own a Kindle 3 but I don't see how this is a bad thing.

My next upgrade will be when color e ink is commercially viable. Might be waiting awhile on that, though!

I think the irony of it all are people who root their Nook Color and then buy books off the Kindle App anyway! I always wonder how far Amazon reach is beyond the kindle device for book sales. One of my friends has a Samsung Android phone and he buys books via the Kindle app for it.

Actually I browse deal sites/coupon sites a lot.. and the Amazon Kindle w/ Special Offers is really popular with members because of the discounts offered that either aren't available elsewhere.. or far more rare.

Made me think about buying one to replace my OG Kindle, whereas I normally wouldn't go near an ad supported device.

I've gotten 10% off video games a few times already. The only one I've never yet seen was the 20% off HDTV coupon.

Yeah.. I've been signed up for Amazon Deal of the Day.. and every other amazon.com anything since their inception.. I don't know what people are talking about.. I look at every e-mail every day. They don't even normally contain any actual special offers or coupons.. just links to places on amazon.com where sales are going on.. the type of sales that everyone sees if they browse amazon.com.

Amazon has no service I know of that actually gives out special coupons.. or even special deals, other than "Kindle w/ Special Offers."

edit: Actually.. they recently started offering "Local Deals".. it's run by amazon.com, but the coupons aren't for them.

You've also gotten $30 dollars worth of Jeans/Swimwear for $10? $50 dollars of powertools/babygoods for $25? Half priced Roku? Buy a book get a $10 gift card? Half priced lighted covers?

10% off is not the same as $10 off any videogame of any price.

Sorry, that's what I meant. I've recently seen these "Woot" sales. What are those? They had a 42" 1080p HDTV for about $365 + $5 shipping. Refresh rate was 60hz.

Nope, I don't believe I have. I suppose I understand that there are exclusives and that may be appealing to some people. For me personally, I love my jail-broken Kindle 3 and wouldn't switch my custom screens for advertisements.

I apologize if this has been posted already, but did they get sales figures from Amazon, too? I imagine the majority of Kindle sales are directly through Amazon, and last I checked, Amazon hasn't released sales figures.

Are you really comparing some shitty refurbished HDTV on Woot to 20% off any HDTV?

Yeah, that's something else. Woot sells different stuff daily at a discounted price.

Follow some of the links in the OP.. and click the ones saying "IDC" or whatever.

They link to the actual press release from the actual company that collects the data.

Even that isn't very clear though.. it's all just speculation as far as I can tell.. probably the most educated speculation you'll find, but still speculation.

Interesting. I wonder how accurate their speculation is. I just find it suspect since Amazon consistently says that the Kindle is their bestselling item, which has to be work out to some insane number.

the iriver HD has a 1024x768 screen (aka a HD screen) while the kindle (and the nook and kobo) have a 800x600 screen. The HD screen should be better for reading books, especially books with graphics like comics and pdfs.

did you genuinely just advocate a e-reader with advertisements as a real reason to get something over another, non-ad plastered e-reader?

I mean I, uh, basically cannot think of anyone obsessed enough with Amazon to just not go online and browse what they want instead of having that garbage on their e-reader

more power to ya if that's an actual selling point although holy shit is all I can say

Yes, it is a feature. The ads are only displayed when you turn the thing off as a replacement screensaver, and as a small line of text at the bottom of a single menu screen.

It makes the reader 20% and the ads are actually great deals, and are not offered via any of their email lists or facebook pages.

Anyways on the topic of the iriver Google ereader.

I really don't think there is room for another player in the market right now. I think BN and Amazon with their established reputations and presence in the market are going to remain the two big players for the foreseeable future. I predict a flop this time for google. It also looks way too much like a Kindle which will hinder its attempts to create brand identity.

I just stay out of the e-reader scene completely and go with... books.

No idea what I would even get or what's the easiest to get books for or whatever.

Yeah my partner who has the Latest Kindle but without adds gets the emails now and again. Gotten the 10 for 20 deal two or three times. Its possible that we only get the emails because I think that is the email that we registered the Kindle to.

I find adds kind of annoying personally but to each his own I guess. I simply see Nook as the better Hardware and I was never been shy about paying more for something that I think is better.

The Nook Color is a tablet, not an eReader. I played with it a while and there is no way someone can read an entire book on that screen without eye strain.

I do just fine. Brightness all the way down on the default slider, and lower it even more on the separate brightness setting on the e-reader menu. The screen works perfectly for me.

The 8 hour or less battery life is the only real problem and it can be an annoying one. Having to charge my book every other day is silly.

Both the Kindle and Nook are great products with vast libraries.. they make it really easy to very quickly be reading any number of millions of books, and e-ink is just incredible in multiple ways.

I have trouble convincing my heavy book reading friends of the tech unless I actually show them the damn thing... it's a problem with the demographics.. a lot of book nerds are snobby about not using electronic devices. It's hard for me to fathom NOT being interested in an e-reader.. I seriously don't get it.. potentially every book you ever buy from now until the end of time available to you on a whim instantly on an awesome device... + available to you at any PC or mobile device.

It even remembers what page you are on.. reading a book on my kindle at night right now.. but on occasion want to catch a few pages on the crapper... well.. my kindle is at home.. but that's OK, because I have my phone at work, and my Kindle iPhone app knows what page I stopped at the night before.. and my kindle will know what page I got to on the crapper. All synced wirelessly and w/o me ever really having to do anything. It's pretty epic.

For me, when I go on a trip, I always take a few books with me since I don't know what I'll be in the mood to read. So simply saving all that space by having the e-reader is a plus. Another thing is, and it may not sound like much, but man, not having to hold a book open, especially while laying in bed is just so nice. The page is just flat and straight on to you at all times and it really is something that's hard to go back to now.

I am in the same situation. I own a ton of big clunky books and I would go on a trip and bring one or two only to find that I didn't really want to read either which was kinda depressing. So much more convenient to have an ereader.

Though I really don't believe that ANY ereader on the market right now is really a money saver. You can buy textbooks as ebooks or slightly cheaper but you cant sell them back which makes them a loss. Most books that are even slightly popular are the same price whether they are ebook or print. For me cast savings are not even a factor (because they don't really exist) and its about convenience.

Can I read B&N books on my PC, iPhone, or Android Tablet?

Yes, you can read B&N purchased ebooks on most mobile devices, iPad, Android devices, as well as PC/Mac by downloading the Nook app: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/u/free-nook-apps/379002321

The Nook Color is still (over 10 months since its release) a very impressive e-reader/tablet for the price, both stock and (especially) rooted. Magazine/comic viewing in particular on the NC is phenomenal, and there are animated books of various sorts (kids' books etc.) that work on the NC in ways e-ink devices can't reproduce. It's very slick, and very attractive.

Did anyone know that the new Nook Touch has an unlockable browser and also freaking bluetooth? Saw an article posted about it the other day, probably on here but in a different topic. It's already the best e-ink e-reader on the market, but it's also packed with goodies.

Honestly, B&N deserves a lot more credit than many have given them for their work in bringing two stellar products like the Nook Color and Nook Touch to market. Unfortunately for them, they're competing against Amazon's bottomless pockets and moneyhats lol. Still, it's good that they're staking a claim in the market - competition is always good. They deserve all of their success with these devices from my experiences with them.

One thing I am curious about.

If ONLY Nook Color > Kindle 3 (I assume in both formats)

Wouldn't that mean that Nook Color+Nook Eink puts BN ahead by quite a bit last quarter? It would be very interesting to know. Though its possible that they just included both together and named Nook Color since it is the dominant model.

ehh I gave my wife the option a year ago to choose the nook Color, Kindle, or Ipad and she ended up choosing the nook color. Part of the reason is because a few of her friends have nooks aswell and B&N has a feature where you can share books that you buy with your friends. They also just added flash and app store to the thing so it expands on it's features greatly.

Personally I prefer the real deal, just can't give up my hardback books, but i'll probably bite eventually, although I don't know which I would choose.

Has anyone from Canada bought a Nook Colour? I've been wanting to get an e-reader, but also something to replace my dead laptop for couch surfing GAF.

I don't live in canada myself but a couple of my wifes friends with nooks do, what did you need to know I could probably get the answer for you.

I would say from what I have experiances with my wifes is that it's not the best in any one area, it's not the best e-reader, it's not the best multimedia tablet either, but it probably is the best middle ground between a reader, and tablet, and it won't break the bank as it's decently priced.

I would say that the nook color is probably better than the kindle for things like Comics/Graphic Novels/ and Magazines simply due to the color feature alone.

Really just wondering if they had any hassles getting things going. Sounds like it would be what I'm looking for, not looking for anything fancy or dedicated to one thing and decently priced.

Reading this thread reminds me of the Sales-Age threads on gaming side when the Wii was big.

"Wii sales are nice, but who cares if it's selling. It doesn't compare to real e-readers."
"Wii is hurting gaming by using motion controls. I prefer regular."

A lot of similar complaints being used here. Granted, I can almost agree with them. I just got a NookColor for my birthday and thought "Man, I really wanted the regular Nook for the longer battery life and from what I've heard, e-ink screens are better for reading." My parents got me the color hoping I could get textbooks on it and save some money. I love the thing now, and really do hope they some day open it up for more apps, which I guess supports the people saying it only sells as a tablet, but honestly all I do with it is read and listen to Pandora.

So my wife asked her friends and two of them said that it wasent much of a hassle getting their nook up and going, the wifi works great, and getting all of their stuff set up and buying books has been pretty easy, the other one said she had some difficulty at first getting her account setup but after that everything has been good. If thats the type of info your looking for. Anything else let me know and i'll get the info for you.

The thing is that the nook color is pretty new when you compare it to something like the kindle, and a viable cheaper alternative to something like the Ipad (depending on what you want it for). Like i said it's not the singular best at anything it does but it's good as an all in one package at an affordable price point.

As for feature updates I can tell you they just upgraded the nook color with flash and does net video pretty well, and they have a full blown android based app store coming soon, so B&N is doing pretty good at keeping it in the competition for the consumer.
