Norton AntiVirus - An irrelevant company?

I've had my free norton antivirus subscription that came with my netbook expire like 2 years ago, yet no matter how much I try to uninstall this crap, I continue to be prompted with fake scans and messages telling me "Are your family pictures safe?"

I have absolutely no respect this company. In this day and age, it doesn't seem to me like there is real deviance in applications and standard web use.

Does anyone who isn't 40+ years old even depend or use this software?

If you're getting fake scans, then it's probably not Norton, and probably an actual virus.
On my family's PC, Norton is expired is constantly saying "YOUR PC IS NOT SAFE, CLICK HERE TO PROTECT IT", almost looking like a random popup. I wouldn't put it past someone to think a Norton popup is a web popup.

Back in the 90's I just assumed it was the best because it had the most boring looking box. Plus, that guy on the box - assuming his name was Norton, just added to the message.

"Our product is so good, we don't give a shit about the packaging."

There's some ad that simulates a virus scan on your computer. It's not Norton it's malware trying to install itself. Close that shit as fast as possible...

Yeah, if you were to pay money for that, I doubt it would be going to Norton. They're probably just using that name so people think they're dealing with a reputable company.

Also, I don't think it's a web ad so much as it is existing malware already on your system.

I have been running my pc without an AV/firewall for years now.

I got a virus last year from a porn site that was it.

In over half a decade just one. I sorted it by just reinstalling windows.

How do you know if you have no antivirus to detect it?

Unless Norton has changed their practices since I stopped using them almost a decade ago, that shit is a supreme pain to completely remove from your PC without doing a clean windows install, practically bordering on malware. So, yes, they are completely irrelevant. Especially when I can get far better protection from Avast and Comodo for free, and am able to remove the two without such a huge hassle.

he doesn't. he's giving the computer equivalent of 'I also bareback with chicks, not a drip!'

do not listen to that god awful advice.

My dad and grandmother are convinced that paying for something makes it a better product; while I basically forced my dad to accept MSE, my grandmother paid for a year subscription to Norton. Her loss.

Yeah this sounds like it. I had Norton pre installed on this laptop too and while the software was shit, it was far from impossible to just uninstall. My dad had that virus pretending to be anti virus scans shit many times before though.

Every year or so I install MalwareBytes or MSE, see that it shows no results, then promptly uninstall.
Why would you uninstall the antivirus after installing it? Also MSE has relatively low detection rates compared to some other free anti viruses.
Edit again: Never mind.

No popups, No slowdowns, No problems at all.

My PC is as snappy fast as the day i installed windows 7..

If you ever do experience these problems, try SpeedMyPC.com! My computer is 100 to 200% faster than before I used SpeedMyPC. It's as fast as the day I bought it! Thanks SpeedMyPC!

Why would you uninstall the antivirus after installing it?

For the same reason that I uninstall other extraneous programs whenever I deem necessary. For the same reason I remove shortcuts from the Start Menu > All Programs menu that I never use. For the same reason that I keep my recycle bin empty at all times.

The reason is that I'm OCD and can't help but organize things

My grandpas girlfriend is the same way. She insists that Norton is the absolute best anti virus out there and that a wireless card in her desktop is more efficient than an ethernet cable I think she does it to bother me.

Symantec is a large company which doesn't just make antivirus. Norton (the consumer version of their antivirus product) is just one of their many business lines.

They have corporate antivirus, DLP, network/system backup, Ghost, encryption, and a whole host of other products.

I'm in IT security so I've been using Symantec products for a long time. They're a publicly traded company with a market cap of about $13b. They haven't been just antivirus for a few decades now.

People like you are why worms exist. You do know there is plenty well written malicious code which doesn't automatically crash your system or cause slow down right?

Your IT security ignorance is why they pay me the big bucks. Preciate it breh

I think Kent was being sarcastic, if not oh boy =X

That's a fair point, about Symantec having other software. Still, I had a lot of bad times trying to remove old Norton software on machines, enough to always give me pause towards considering Symantec stuff again, particularly over freeware like Avast and Comodo.

This debate sprouts up every time antivirus software is mentioned. For some of us, it's not worth the constant nagging every time we want to do something on the internet. A virus can be removed with the proper software. Fraudulent charges on a credit card can be reversed. It's not the end of the world. And if I can make it through multiple years without these things happening, I don't see why I need to be bothered every time I download a file. And I don't need the extra variable when I'm trying to troubleshoot why something isn't working.

I haven't used Norton since the early 2000s. Been using Kaspersky for the past 5 years and I'm well chuffed with their product.

For some reason I ended up googling Lindsay Lohan Playboy today... I don't know why, but I did... and after admiring her airbrushed tits for a bit and remarking to myself - she's wouldn't be a bad looking girl if her skin wasn't so goddamn atrocious...

I started getting pop-up ads in the bottom corner of my browser, on GAF - I was like - oh shit, they fucked up good on GAF... was about to make a new thread, when it happened on another website, and fucking links started getting redirected.

Still in the process of getting rid of that shit... fucking Lindsay Lohan gave me digital STDs just looking at her.

I was only running MSE - but I'm pretty sure that's the least line of defense.

I googled those symptoms... and the solutions seems to involve running combofix.

I hate running combofix. Fuck.

Fuck Norton. Cast that shit down to the deepest pits of hell.

I'd like to endorse MSE but I need to use software built in Clarion and MSE eats .TPS files like they were bacon sandwiches :(

I'm currently running a free version of AVG while I wait for MS to fix the issue.

Like all antivirus softwares it's bad. Every now and then few good anti-virus softwares emerge but after one year they become bloated pieces of poo.
Norton is still great for company use since they have good help desk, adjusting settings is easy and fast also they react fast to new viruses.

I don't mind when OEMs preinstall things like Norton, because at least you can remove it fairly painlessly... what's really pissed me off lately is pre-installation of things like Egis WinLocker and shit like that. I shouldn't have to spend the first hour of getting a new computer removing all the crap that the manufacturer has put on there. Do they get money for that? Should I actually be getting the hardware cheaper - or are they just stealing my time to make their margins bigger?

i've been doing the same and only had one virus way back in the kazaa days thanks to stupid family members that i shared the computer with at the time. now i usually install MSE onces every other month and do a scan then uninstall it. it's been clear sailing until recently where i've seen a number of java exploits. i fucking hate that poorly coded POS, i wish it would go extinct.

Me and my brother are on the same subscription, he wants me to pay for half of the renewal, I wanna see if my laptop can survive without it. I only download things from trusted sources and I only visit perhaps 20 different sites, so it seems a bit redundant to me

If you're being bothered every time you download a file, then you're using shitty software.

Other than false positives, I've never encountered any major problems with any AV I've used.

I stick with FinallyFast.com.

It cleared out all of my adwares and viruses and trojans.

Now my computer is fast. Finally!
