Developing story

Norwegian police have found a "bomb-like device" in central Oslo, and a suspect is being held in custody, the police said on their official Twitter account on Saturday.

A Reuters reporter at the scene said a large area had been cordoned off and that the perimeter was being expanded.

"For safety reasons, you must immediately move further away," a policeman told reporters as Oslo's bomb squad was preparing to enter the area.

"It seems like this device only has potential for causing limited damage ... we're now awaiting further necessary investigations," the police tweeted.

Oslo's Groenland area, a multi-ethnic neighborhood that is home to popular bars and restaurants as well as several mosques, is also where the city's main police station is located, less than a kilometer away from where the device was found.

In neighboring Sweden, a truck on Friday plowed into crowds in Stockholm, killing four people and wounding 15 in what police said was an apparent terror attack.

Update:

Norwegian police set off a controlled explosion of a "bomb-like device" found in central Oslo on Saturday, and a suspect is being held in custody, police told reporters.

A Reuters reporter described a loud bang shortly after the arrival of Oslo's bomb squad.

"The noise from the blast was louder than our explosives themselves would cause," a police spokesman said, while adding that further investigation would be conducted at the scene.

The device had appeared to be capable of causing only a limited amount of damage, the police said earlier.

Police declined to give information about the suspect.

Orders of magnitude better info on the dramatically lesser amount of things that are wrong in the world compared to decades past to feed your confirmation bias.

Not necessarily true. Many places are more dangerous/violent etc than the past. Simply depends on the place and time.

While this is true to an extent, there is no comparison if you look at the averages. And not just in the reduction of violence, but better social security, declining bigotry (believe it or not, it used to be a lot worse), treatment of disease, etc. The world IS getting better.

Teen asylum-seeker ID'd as suspect in Norway explosive case

A 17-year-old asylum-seeker from Russia was arrested Sunday in connection with an explosive device found near a busy subway station in Norway's capital and defused before it detonated, authorities said.

The youth was detained on suspicion of handling explosives, but investigators do not know if he planned to carry out an attack with the homemade device, Signe Aaling, chief prosecutor for Norway's PST security service, said.

"PST is now working on finding his intentions and find out whether others are involved," Aaling said.

The youth was not identified, but security service head Benedicte Bjornland said intelligence agencies were aware of him. He is an asylum-seeker from Russia who arrived in Norway with his family in 2010, Bjornland said.

Bjornland also alleged that the youth was part of "extreme Islamism" circles in Norway.

A friend of mine once dropped a fake bomb that they used for military training in the middle of Oslo. It was fairly amusing to see the aftermath knowing it was a mistake.

According to his defending attorney, the suspect is denying any affiliation with ISIS and is claiming the explosive device was just meant as/for a prank apparently.
