Not happy with Bioshock. Does it get better?

If you aren't enjoying it by now then you probably never will. The game relies heavily on the players investment in the world, and if all you're seeing is a corridor shooter at the moment then it isn't going to get any better.

Personally I loved the game.

Not really. Just because small group of people don't like it doesn't mean it's same situation for all games you mentioned.

No game will ever have 100% positive feedback.

Like it or not, Bioshock has earned its special place in gaming history.
 
just on a side note did anyone find it odd that ryan/rapture was against religion yet a lot of the splicers would be singing love songs about god and the bible?

one thing i really liked in this game was the AI. unlike shit games like COD where the ai is nothing but pop up targets on one set path the enemies in this game roam freely and do whatever they please. at the end after you get the
big daddy suit
go back to earlier levels like fort frolic and follow splicers around. it's surprising how much they do.

pretty much. if your expecting a run and gun game this isnt a game for you. a big part of the experience is taking in the world and getting the audio logs to fill out the story.

Using Rand as a basis for Ryan was interesting but his behavior doesn't remotely match up.

Besides that, this comment only means you've never experienced Planescape: Torment.
 
In my opinion Bioshock does not get better but worse, it starts off really interesting but eventually turns into a shooter. The final boss is a joke and the ending well let's not even go there. I still enjoyed the game even if it did lose what made it special by the time you reach the end.

Grim Fandango has the single best story in any video game, ever. The whole narrative structure of that thing was genius, and the world was, for lack of a better term, fucking inspired.

No the game is shit the whole way through. Plus you can't die in the fucking game. If you "die", you get teleported to that capsule thingy, but the enemies still have the damage they received from you; they don't regain health. So basically, there's no penalty for dying which is the fucking stupidest thing ever since it completely ruins the atmosphere.

you can turn off those respawn things making the game all hardcore and shit.
there's also an achievement for playing with them off.
 
It goes downhill rapidly after fort frolic. Even worse gimmicks, really annoying game design and no real reason to continue the story once you hit a plot point just past fort frolic. Bail out now if you're already not feeling it.
 
One of the few games of recent years I played that started great and turned to shit as it went on. Play through to art collection sequence, and then turn it off. Every terrible cliché in both RPGs and shooters comes to full bear, and the delicious art/sound coating washes off. What's under is not pretty, and not fun.
 
It's only a corridor shooter if the shooting is all you care about. If you take a few moments to look around you and actually examine the world, the art design, listen to the audio diaries, you'll realize a lot more about the back story and see that there's a lot more depth to the game world than it seems at first. There's a lot of detail there that's easy to overlook.
 
The average response in this thread makes me amazed that 'the industry' holds the game in such high regard.

I found it impossible to like this game. I didn't complete it, I got to some part where I got a toaster/cd player/flamethrower or some shit i dunno. Anyway, I was at no point interested in the story because I didn't really see any questions that weren't already answered (uh oh, underwater kingdom falls. what, plasmids you say? Giving people powers? What could go wrong!) There was probably more to it, but I honestly didn't care, and I certainly didn't care about saving that Irish bloke's family because I assumed he'd screw me over at some point.

On top of not caring, the combat was averagely average, it was pretty much a case of "ok. no water for shock plasmid, no oil for flame. guess i'll use these shitty weapons which make for some of the weakest gun combat I have ever experienced"

Yeehhhh, I didn't like this game so much. I keep swearing to go back to it and try and find some fun in it.

I thought I was the only one in the world that didn't like this game. I stopped playing this game months ago and returned it to my friend. Yeah, I played the PC version, bite me.

It's not about haters, to me, this game was hyped to high heaven. What did I get? Doom. The plasmids are gimmicky and only the electric one is ever useful. The combat is disgustingly simple, and boils down to the most bare basic 1994 corridor shooter. There's really nothing in the game that stands out. Yes, the atmosphere is great, and while I don't care for the plot, I can see some merit to it, but when you strip all that away, you're left with just another Doom.

you would think EA would reprint some copies of the game and sell them at a budget price on their online store... missed opportunity imo.
 
I'm not a shooter fan and it takes a lot of story / something other than shooting to keep me interested. I completed this which is quite something - I would say that if you just don't like some parts of the gameplay (eg, safe hacking, photo research, audio diary exploration etc) than there isn't much left apart from a trippy shooter with lovely art direction. Luckily I got into the exploration bits / even hacking which i initially thought i would despise when i first came across it :lol

am going for another playthrough soon which is V rare for me on this type of game, loved the atmosphere and would like to be more creative in using plasmids second time round.

Review scores mean dick. All they are is a tally of a bunch of dick wads opinions tagged with numeric values they pull out of their asses. No matter how high of a score a game receives, metacritic or otherwise, it will not be enjoyed by everyone. For the OP, I am assuming Bioshock is one of those games.

Take away some of BioShock’s unique aspects like the art direction and the plasmids, and you’ve got a run-of-the-mill corridor FPS with a somewhat broken morality system.

But then again, the plasmids are what makes BioShock shine – you have to be creative in order to unlock the full potential of this game. Play through it guns blazing, and you’ll miss out. There’s no denying, however, that you’re right in assuming that BioShock has received a lot of praise based on its plot, its art deco style and its utopia-turned-dystopia theme – and rightfully so. It’s definitely my pick for GOTG so far.

Well GAF seems to think Uncharted is the second coming for some reason unknown to me...

I just feel sorry for the people that use the comments in this thread as a determining factor of whether they try the game or not. Really, if you have a PC capable of playing this there is no excuse to at least try it out for $5.

Come into Bioshock expecting a good console action game, and you'll have a good time, especially if you rented it or got it cheap. If you're expecting Deus Ex or System Shock, you're going to be disappointed

The best storytelling this gen... arguably any gen. No game tells a story through the world around the player like Bioshock. Fort Frolic is borderline genius.
 
If you're not liking it now, you're gonna have real issues with the ending. It's a collect-a-thon that would make even Rare proud.

P.S. Don't be OCD about cracking safes. I'd have enjoyed the game more if I hadn't been compulsive about opening everyone (especially since they're not really worth it.)

Every game has its batshit cheering section on GAF. Resistance 2, Criterion, and Bioshock. GAF cheerleaders led me astray on all three.
 
Bioshock is an incredible game - But if someone isn't feeling it at the beginning I highly doubt they'll be feeling it at the end. The beginning was one of my favorite parts.
 
Game looks pretty awesome and the story is interesting, but as an FPS it's pretty wank, and has quite possibly one of the worst final boss you'll ever face. Always found it funny how certain people hype it up.
 
I didn't like it either. Opened a Gamefly account just for this, sent it back after 2 days. I felt obligated to hack everything and save bullets. The fetching, and hacking got on my nerves. I guess I was expecting a better story/gameplay ratio too. In fact I only wanted the story, I didn't like the gameplay much. The demo had me all wide eyed, and it showed promise of a great ride.

I love Fallout 3 however.

YOu missed the time-frame of 'wow' on this one... seriosuly - when it came out originally it was something - after a few months - it was not so much...
I really enjoyed it - but part of that was buying into the setting (and realizing that isolation was part of it)
