Not standing or removing hats during national athem @ sporting events ?

Why is it when people don't stand or perform the anthem it's considered disrespectful? Like seriously why does it matter. It looks silly to get upset over a song.

If the anthem or whatever is being done out of respect for someone or a group of people, you're a douche for not standing up. Otherwise, like at a ball game? Yeah, who cares? You're there to watch a game. The people choosing not to stand or remove their hat aren't thinking about vets and what rights they have as an American...they're just there to watch a damn ball game.

It's also really awkward having some guy come over and complain to you about standing up or not... It's not a political event or a place to honor people, it's just a ball game. It's like those people who randomly start harping at you about why you don't love Jesus or something, acting all patronizing, when you aren't there to talk about religion at all.

I find it disrespectful as well. We do have the freedom to do it yadda yadda but you really should go somewhere else if you aggressively don't like the country.

Tell that attitude to take a hike. I love living in the United States but I don't like to stand for the anthem. Deal with it.

Who cares about some song made about the country you're in? It's cool and shit but standing up is too much effort. I get standing up for fallen comrades but not for a damn song.

I always stand and remove my hat and sing too, as I find it respectful and do love my country in my own way. I don't do it for soldiers, or presidents, I do it for me. I also enjoy singing the Canadian anthem at games as well.

I don't judge people who don't. I also think if people get in people's faces about not standing it is extremely disrespectful. Mind your own business. Not everyone has to love the country in the same way. Or love it at all. Love of country is like religion: personal.

I have to say I would stand for any national anthem being played out of respect. Personally I think flag worship is nonsense, so I refuse to salute the flag.

Many people died to protect my freedom and provide me the opportunities of the US. I feel they are due at least a few moments of gratitude and remembrance. That is what I think about during the anthem.

Thanks again to all those that have served to allow me to enjoy the life that I do.

You should take all the 20 seconds it would take to think over how stupid the notion that people should uproot their entire lives to go live in a different country because they didn't want to stand up for a flag/anthem is.

I find it slightly scary how nationalistic people are in the U.S.

Who cares if people don't stand for some song that gets played so many times.

It irks me too op. I don't get upset, I more or less do a mental eye roll then continue my day.

Nothing odd about showing support for your country, I find the opposite odd, and do think less of people who don't.

reading that last sentence of yours made me think of the racists on 4chan meme

yeah because being curious about why some people are living in a country that they'd just disrespected with a disgusting comment is the same as "fuck minorities get out of my country"

Get the fuck out of here with that bullshit

I don't do either. I just wait for the game to start and check my phone. fuck nationalism breh.

I'm glad this thread came around because I have been meaning to ask this: what is the point of removing your hat? Why is having a hat on a sign of disrespect?

you don't wear a hat inside so that god can see into your soul. ya know, because even god doesn't have xray specs. I figure thats the same reason why you don't wear one during the anthem. You're still paying some tribute to some man created figure and only want to appease it.

I am okay with leaving a hat on, but yea I hate it when people are disinterested or sitting during an anthem. Disrespect these days I tell ya!

I should have been more clear I was more pissed that there disrespectful comment than the sitting part.

From the way you wrote it they didn't seem to come off as disrespectful, just honest. They could have worded their response very differently if they wanted to be disrespectful.

The flag is a symbol. To some it can represent liberty and freedom, to others it can represent centuries of oppression. A symbol can mean a number of things to a number of people, and if it means something negative to a person then why would you expect them to honor it? They can still love living in the country and admire it for its many positive qualities while also choosing to emotionally hold it accountable for its flaws.

During high school I lived in Pennsylvania for a year and they did the pledge of allegiance every morning. They had stopped doing that in Oregon when I was in elementary school.

It was a culture shock.

People with creepy military fetishes.

Like why stop at playing the national anthem before sporting events? Don't the troops who sacrificed their lives for you deserve to be honored before literally everything you do? Oh it's almost bedtime better brush my teeth, BUT FIRST *hits play button for nationalanthem.mp3*

They still do it every morning at my high school. It becomes grating...

I haven't said it really ever.

Hey it's your right to do what you want. Just know that in this case, you're the odd one.

Edit: And I see this thread is slowing morphing into a bash the US thread. Carry on.

Well, he isn't wrong in that the tradition is odd despite being done by the majority. It's comparable to saying god bless you when sneezing, a relic of an older age.

As long as no one is harming anyone, sitting or standing, what is the problem? I'm sure the dead veterans do not roll over in their graves over a 3 minute song.

Yeah, because at least I know I'm free.
not free enough to sit down whenever you damn please though.

op it's not disrespectful to sit, not everyone shares your worldview. It would have been disrepectful for them to boo or talk during the anthem. So stop with the "Lerv et er leave et" attitude.

People sit at sporting events? Semi-joking but I never sit myself, almost nobody does in the stadium of the team I support.

Man, sometimes I can't stand. Bad knee. But I look completely fine. Don't judge me.

I don't like all this judging, you don't know why I'm not standing. Stop assuming :(

Man that's just odd to me that there would be people like that at a ball game, I guess I just stereotype jocks/sports fans as country living people.

I alway thought it would be funny if at in the the middle of warehouse party or club they had everyone stop to stand for the pledge.

For a country that loves to talk about its "rights" I find it hilarious that people take such offense to people not singing to a flag.

but I guess rights only apply to being racist or going to Chipotle with a BFG (because you never know when that barbacoa might turn hostile)

It's funny how people who say this seem to be the only ones who say of immigrants to their country "If you didn't like your country, then why didn't you stay and try to fix it?".
