Now that Kinect will be bundled with every Xbone...

...how do you see/want developers using it? The problem with the original Kinect was that the only developers who bothered with it were making Kinect specific games. It wasn't feasible or convenient for non Kinect games to have integral Kinect gameplay mechanisms because that would cut out all the non-Kinect players.

The device is pretty neat but thus far it's only been used as a gimmick or as a means to attract children who don't care much for game pad controlled games. But I think it's high time we had games like Mass Effect and Halo creatively employ Kinect for important segments in the game which was impossible with the 360.

I've never viewed the sensor as a single solution device. I want to see it work in tandem with my game pad. I want mini games in a next generation Crackdown to employ the camera. I want to arm wrestle in a Shenmue like game using the Kinect. I'd like Kojima inspired wtf-moment prompts that rely on the device. You get the idea.

Kinect integration with skyrim is awesome. Having voice control commands for things like menu or shortcuts should be a basic thing devs can implement.

It'll be to Xbox One what Sixaxis was for the PS3. Underused, for good reason, and very few games implementing it in a significant way that actually adds to the experience.

Rainbow Six using Voice and hand gesture for stuff. Also adding SmartGlass for planning how the early stages will play out like breaching etc.

Having observed pretty much a dearth of interesting uses of Kinect 1, I don't see how a faster better more accurate version is going to make developers any more creative.

The question is : Will multiplatform developpers spend the ressource to use Kinect or just do strict copy/paste between PS3 and XBone ?

At this point, they'd better have a Kinect less bundle or some SERIOUS first party games that exploit it.

I don't want to see developers use it at all. Kinect needs to die a horrible death. It has been around for a couple of years now and I have yet to see how it could improve my gaming experience in any way (out side of a couple of niche titles, which I don't play anyway). An upgraded version is just that, an upgraded version. It does the same a bit better. It's cool tech and all, but it will never change the fact that it's not a very useful device for interacting with games.

The only suitable answer is custom gestures. Instead of trying to shoein an awful kinect control scheme, have the device record your own personal combination of motion and controller actions. If you want to zoom in a sniper rifle by scratching your nose, you should.

I can see the mood and heart rate detection getting used for some nice stuff like dynamic NPC reactions to the player... for example if you look engaged and happy, that NPC in Skyrim 3 will say : "Why so happy?" or a horror game where scarejumps will happen if your heartrate isn't high enough. Proper headtracking for racing games is also nice.

You mentioned Smart Glass. That's against the rules!!

Awww bugger.

Voice comms gestures should be in most games that suit it. No grenade throwing tbh.

I want good developers to make robot game with control similar to Pacific Rim.

I would be happy with them porting some of the early Kinect games and getting them working. Steel Battalion with working controls would be awesome!

dim the screen if I walk away from the tv. turn off the xbox if I fall asleep watching netflix. pause the game if I am assaulted by a dog or person not identified as a logged in user.

I'm not saying that the upgraded Kinect is a game changer. I'm just saying that now that everyone who has a One will have a Kinect should mean that developers should be able to add segments in their game that rely on the device, rather than optional control commands like 'reload'.

There won't be any fear of "Well, what if the majority of our customer base doesn't have the device?". Such qualms were bound to restrict creative implementation of Kinect for the 360.

The answer is "umm, maybe". It's one of the primary reasons I'm holding off on Xbone, and not even entertaining the idea of buying it until deep into next year. Microsoft itself couldn't even be bothered to show off any killer Kinect 2.0 games, which isn't exactly incentivizing anyone to drop an extra hundy on their system over Sony's.

I think part of that was people moaning like hell at press events when they show Kinect titles over and over. A few showed off SmartGlass in interesting ways but it was more about just showing launch games. I am sure the majority of them will use Kinect in some way.

Yep pretty much this. You will see first party developers add it in but it will be little things like in TLoU where you shake the controller to stop the flash light from flickering.
We may however see some cool things once the pc hacker guys start messing around with the new Kinect.

I disagree - if the Kinect 2.0 is as advanced as they are saying, it should be a given to show some truly next gen games that blow minds. It's also a huge missed opportunity to get their system talked about in the mainstream media.

My gut tells me the software just isn't ready yet, which is worrying for them, and good for my wallet.

I find the whole console warrior stuff beyond juvenile so don't take this the wrong way, but the sole reason I'm dropping $800+ on a PS4 plus games this fall instead of Xbone is that extra $100. Microsoft needs to justify why their system costs more, and they simply have not done it yet.

And it kills me, because my kids go nuts for stuff like Just Dance 5, which I will just pick up for the 360.

I agree. Personally I would rather they spend time making core games for the launch, instead of making a load of Kinect only titles. They need the core onboard early on, so they need games that don't remind them of horrific Kinect games.

Dance Central One will get announced and it will be awesome. :D

Paradoxically, one of the benefits will be that first party developers won't be pushed to use kinect at all costs because they've got to support the device sales. They'll use it only when and if it makes sense: we've already seen Crimson Dragon and Ryse switching from Kinect-only games to controller-plus-kinect games, and that's good.

That video also has some nice ideas:

The Evil Within Dev says next gen will be scarier "Regarding tracking of facial expressions and reading the player’s heartbeat, Mikami stated that, “If the accuracy improves and we can really observe the player’s facial expression and heartbeat the game could react to that and that could really be something we could use for survival horror.”

Voice commands, the odd 'wave your arms like a pillock' to do so and so, or it'll be completely ignored. So pretty much the same as Kinect 360.

I like the idea of the game using the heart monitor to fuck with you.

Send extra enemies or know when would be the best time to spring an enemy out on you.

The question I'm wondering now is, will MS pack in a Kinect game that will play the same role as Wii Sports played for the Wii? If its just a sports game like Kinect Rivals then it's going to look and feel terribly derivative no matter how much better the tech and graphics are.

What could that game be? When will they announce it? Surely they won't let the opportunity for a first impression go to waste by not including a game...?

They need their Kinect Sports/Fitness packed in. If they take anything from Nintendo, its packing something in that shows off the tech.

I guess we will see some kind of mini games packed in. Something like the Kinect lab on the 360. Would be dumb to not do so.

They really missed out on the Kinect Lab stuff. It could have been awesome for developers to be making their own bits. Hopefully the Kinect Lab + Windows 8 app stuff will be linked.

They should just get DoubleFine to get their Kinect games all bundled together to launch with.

Fight Night Kinect. I liked throwing punches in Punch Out Wii, but I'd enjoy it even more if the sensor can identify the differences between hooks, straights, and uppercuts along with torso tracking for bobbing and weaving.

Imagine a game where you need to keep a calm face and low heart rate. Something like LA Noire's interrogation scenes.
Or even a shooter where you'll get more gun sway if you're too excited.

Yeah I'm not a game developer for a reason

That's what I hope we will see.

I don't want to see it used in any way. There is nothing any developer will ever be able to do to make me want to speak to my game or wave my hands around to do something.

At most you are going to get simple voice commands or hand gestures just like last gen which only distract, not enhance, the game experience.

I dunno. In my more cynical moments I still feel like Kinect was designed primarily as a kind of New Gen Nielson Ratings Sensor, made to count how many people are in the room, if they are actually watching the TV, if they are smiling, how many times per show etc. And then secondarily as a New Gen Game Controller, which we've yet to really see anything really killer in implementation. Sad to think some of the most interesting speculations are stuff like "what if Steel Batallion actually works this time?"

All the best Kinect features are voice control, not motion. Sort of tells you something.

I think it's ok for basic UI stuff.

Well so far we've heard Below, D4, Ryse, Dead Rising 3 all using the sensor as optional components of gameplay.

Because it will be ubiquitous across the platform so I expect way, way more developers using it this time around. People tend to knock something before even using or trying it. I think it could be a hit if done right with the core gamer. Skyrim and Mass Effect were very good with Kinect integration.

Off the top of my head things like voice commands, gesture control, heart rate, force of gestures, facial expression can be used in addition to normal gameplay. I guess time will tell if theses things are worthwhile to gamers, I'd like to think so for the sake of innovation, was hoping PS would do something with Move too :(

That's an important point. The focus of the whole DRM issue with Xbox One (and the upcoming console gen in general) is costs.

They are trying to make more money and spend less.

Why, then, would a developer willingly spend time and resources on Kinect integration when it will increase the cost to make the game? When the title is multiplatform? When controllers will always be an option?

The likelihood of Kinect taking off seems slim to me. More than anything else it's inclusion as mandatory seems based on Microsoft pushing the All-In-One (Media Center) agenda rather than any real benefits to gaming.

Non-gamers will probably love it as a means to navigate their entertainment center for Televison and whathaveyou.

It's gonna suck if someone's Xbox One dies and they need to buy one, but the pricetag means you're spending a lot more than you should for an extra Kinect you don't even need.

There really needs to be an additional SKU for this.

Kinect Sports 3 should be the most ambitious Kinect game for 2013/14. We only saw a trailer so far, but I can't wait to see what they can achieve in this game. If they can pull something really good out of this and attract casuals, Xbox one will be fine. If it's another Kinect Sports and doesn't get some good hype, I'm not sure if casuals will need a new Kinect.

It'll hardly get used at all outside of first party games. With no comparable functionality built into the PS4 i'm afraid it'll make little sense for developers to give it anything but the most basic support, if that.

Mostly voice command stuff I guess. Which is fine when implanted correctly.

I'm hoping head tracking returns for Forza because the added tech of K2.0 could make it a good addition.

Not really interested in much waggle in my games but I'm open to any interesting use of the technology.

*edit*
That demo video from E3 was actually really cool with the face tracking and heartbeat stuff. Also knowing which player you were from the controller you were holding. That was a nice look at the base functionality of the new unit.

That trading card game thingie that came out for PS Eye years ago? That was the peak of inventiveness with camera games. And I don't mean that as a bad thing, I'd love to see that idea return on a larger scale.

Same reason developers would use the touchpad on the PS4, because they create. I suppose it's an incentive to drive their own sales of their respective games on each platform. If I remember Watchdogs is using the touchpad for keypads etc ..

I have always said Kinect Heartbeat stuff + Survival Horror = Big Kinect Awesome Hit.

I agree with these people.

MS already proved why the kinect 2.0 will be anything but just an add-on and a shit gimmick like the sixaxis.
