NPD Million sellers by Format (Last Gen & This Gen)

Taken from the Magic box. The numbers there aren't exactly right as they look they're behind by a couple of months, but for the most part they're solid and they've got much better last gen numbers than I do. ;)

PS2 is actually up to 63 titles and will easily pass the PSX and probably be up to close to 100 titles by the time this generation is over, IMO However, you can see that there are a number of publishers who have taken a fall vs last gen, including Sony, Nintendo, Capcom, & Eidos and some who have take a big rise including Activision, Electronic Arts, & Take 2). Surprisingly, Square is doing just as well and will end up doing quite a bit better than last gen by the time it's all said and done.

Nice list. BTW, you listed FFVII twice.

Oops. Actually, it's listed by Magicbox twice because it was published by Sony, blah, blah, blah.

Anyway, I've subtracted one from the PSOne and knocked it down by 2.45M units :)

The fact that Vice City has outsold SM64 makes me cry on the inside.

I also figured that SSBM had higher sell through numbers. I don't know anyone with a GC that doesn't have the game. The bundle will help though.

Suck it down N64 haters. :lol

It does seem to have lost a HUGE amount of it's following, although it's still a big title.

I dunno what ta think. If Fr/Lg hadn't come would those sales have gone to R/S/E? All 5 of the main GBA titles don't match the total of G/S/C which in turn don't match R/B/Y. This gen of games haven't had as large a dropoff from first ta second but still~ And why isn't Stadium 2 on the list? It didn't make a million?

By quite a lot, and so is GTA 3 actually. The GTA Double pack for the PS2 was priced @40, which is essentially the price of the two combined.

So, with those, the actual GTA numbers currently are:

PS2 GRAND THEFT AUTO:VICE ROCKSTAR GAMES (TAKE 2) Oct-02 7,296,352
PS2 GRAND THEFT AUTO 3 ROCKSTAR GAMES (TAKE 2) Oct-01 6,233,291
PS2 GRAND THEFT: ANDREAS ROCKSTAR GAMES (TAKE 2) Nov-04 5,759,553

And once, GTA:SA goes greatest hits, it should blow by ~6.5M as well.

that's really sad
and around 30% of those sales are oeople who just drive around instead of completing any missions

Pokemon has dropped off a fair bit, but there has been a hell of a lot of releases, and judging by Emerald already blowing past a million and with Christmas for it still to come there's still a lot of strength in the franchise.

GC Nintendo Super Smash Bros. Melee 2.66

Smash Bros continues it's domination in the fighting realm.

PSX Capcom Resident Evil 2 (w/ Dual Shock Ver.) 1.74
PSX Capcom Resident Evil 3: Nemesis 1.05

I'm surprised by the huge dropoff with Resi 3, it actually makes REmake look not so bad. Although Resi 4 is definitely a disappointment, shame Capcom took so long to get it released. Obviously japanese sales took a huge dive, but at least with the ps2 release overall sales for Resi 4 may actually look really good.

All the current gen numbers are off... in some cases by over 500k. :/

And MB left out all 3rd party GBC million sellers for some reason...

Do you know what any of those might be? And how long was the GBC in it's "prime" for sales. I honestly don't know that market well enough to be able to pin down the time period.

I should have just pulled out the current gen stuff and inserted mine, but I didn't. It doesn't matter a bit if the past gen stuff is even a year or two behind. The sales are 99.999% done.

It's clear they have some access, because I've followed NPD FOREVER and I've never seen most of those past gen titles EVER have numbers.

The only ones I have were from a May 2002 NPD that listed LTD, but that was only for N64, GBC, DC, or PSX titles that actually made the top 600 that month. And there weren't that many.

The point isn't the exact numbers, as I know that they're behind or just missing a couple, but they've got good past gen numbers and moderately decent current gen number (mostly just behind by some number of months) and I think it gives an excellent view of:

1) How the market has changed
2) How certain publishers have fared during the time period
3) How successful various platforms were from a software perspective.

Well offhand, I know Konami's Yu-Gi-OH! Dark Duel Stories and Atari's Dragon Ball Z: Legendary Super Warriors both passed a million. No doubt there's more. I don't have any numbers though. :/

RuSa didn't pass GS but Emerald's looking like it'll pass Crystal. Overall I'd just say it looks like sales have stabilized for the property (4-5 million for original sets, 1-2 million for remixes... all in the USA only). In the handheld arena though, there's really no denying Pokemon being the most important IP the world over, it's a huge seller in every region and has sustained huge sales for a decade now. PSP will never manage Game Boy level status or maketshare until it has Pokemon or a suitable replacement... which makes me wonder why SCEI doesn't gun hard for Rockman.EXE, Yu-Gi-OH! or DQ Monsters? :/

I expect to see a few more Rev titles up there next gen, as Nintendo lost out to Live service this gen.
Hopefully this coming Gen things should be a bit better.

Pokemon has been going down hill because they keep rehashing the same game over and over. Once a pokemon game comes that has different graphics, expanded gameplay and online it'll explode once again.

I dunno... I see DP doing about as well a RS probably. Keep in mind though that RS moved over 15 million units worldwide. :)

how is 15 million units worldwide a sinking ship?

pokemon was a fad, a huge, huge, 24+ million [blue/green/red = same game] selling fad! however, because it's one of the greatest games ever made, it's managed to survive, and is now a stable, biggest selling rpg series ever, and with the cartoons, films and merchandising is the biggest property in videogames.

The advance Pokemon games might look like the same games as the predecessors to the casual player, but the underlying mechanics are greatly altered and expanded.
It seems like a huge part of the casual crowd has dropped from the series due to the shallow similarities.
The D/P games will most likely not have anything major changed in the way the game is played since you'll be able to trade from the old advance games. But what would be needed to make the big casual group come back is a fleshed and revised story mode and I think the series will benefit greatly form online battling and trading.

But, it's got to be somewhat concerning to Nintendo that they sales have been cut in half. And the GBA is much, much more successful than the GB or GBC (from an active userbase standpoint).

Pokemon Diamond and Pearl will undoubtedly sell A LOT of DS's, but given the market, it will be exceedingly difficult for the DS to sell 15M units. Nintendo DS shipments were 5.27M units and they expect to ship 12.4M units this fiscal year, so that would give an installed base of 17.7M hardware units out there.

Either the attach rate will be the best we've seen (yes, I know they're two titles, but still) or Nintendo will need to exceed their hardware estimates by quite a bit. I'd be a bit more conservative and expect an 8-10M D&P units in the first year. Beyond that it depends on how long and strong the DS market lasts.

The most striking numbers to me are the Gamecube vs N64 numbers. The Gamecube million seller list is now 8 titles as Animal Crossing just reached the million barrier.

There's only two current GCN titles that look like they have a realistic shot at 1M.

SONIC MEGA COLLECTION SEGA OF AMERICA Nov-02 923,025
POKEMON COLOSSEUM NINTENDO OF AMERICA Mar-04 877,205

And for future titles, there's Zelda & ???

Maybe Pokemon, but it's been getting slapped around by the media a bit. So, we're looking at ~11-13 GCN titles that will hit a million vs 28 N64 titles. And none of the GCN titles even come close to approaching the N64's massive successes.

But, it's got to be somewhat concerning to Nintendo that they sales have been cut in half. And the GBA is much, much more successful than the GB or GBC (from an active userbase standpoint).
I dunno, GBC moved almost 50 million units in just 3 years. Also, GBA's had a lot more Pokemon releases than GB or GBC did... Fire Red/Leaf Green likely stunted continued sales for RuSa dramatically (it went from around 90-100k monthly to 10-30k monthly in the USA iirc) which is something RB and GS never had to contend with. I think Emerald's surprisingly strong sales help show the series has really just stabilized now and really isn't declining anymore... the fad's worn off now and we're seeing what the game itself can sustain.

Besides, FFX sold about half what FFVII did... nearly all notable JP franchises have seen worldwide declines since last generation (MGS, RE, Silent Hill, Zelda, DQ, Mario, VF, Tekken, Sakura Taisen, Ridge Racer, YGO, Gundam, etc)... I'm not sure too much "concern" should be leveled at Pokemon alone given the overall market and where it stands. If Pokemon's in trouble, Final Fantasy's on life support...

It's only releasing in Japan this fiscal year though (Jan 2006). The installed base will likely be much larger by the time it sees western release (fall 2006 probably). Lifetime, I don't think DP will really have a problem moving 15 million really... you have to remember it'll help drive hardware sales as well to a degree (as RuSa did on GBA).

Speaking of which, what was GBA at when RuSa released? That might make for a good comparison?

Either the attach rate will be the best we've seen (yes, I know they're two titles, but still) or Nintendo will need to exceed their hardware estimates by quite a bit. I'd be a bit more conservative and expect an 8-10M D&P units in the first year. Beyond that it depends on how long and strong the DS market lasts.
8-10M barely puts it's above FRLG. No way it moves that slowly, it'll easily pass 10M it's first full year (Jan 2006-Jan 2007).

nintendo must be aware of the decrease in popularity, but pokemon was a fad and is now a stable franchise. emerald looks like it will sell the same as crystal, maybe more. i predict 12-15 million for diamond and pearl on the ds, over a period of 2-3 years.

however, it has to be more concerning for square-enix. final fantasy's production costs must be among the highest in the industry, with even higher costs next gen, yet this generation the series has sold significantly less than last gen.

I'm not so sure. Square Enix looks to do SIGNIFICANTLY better this generation than last. Of course, that's by spreading it's reliance away from just Final Fantasy. With Final Fantasy X,X-2, XI, XII, Dragon Quest VIII, Kingdom Hearts, KH 2, they are far ahead of where they were last generation.

It will be interesting to see what the delay does to FFXII's sales. It ~should have been likely the best selling FF of all time given the PS2's performance and the time since the last FF. I know the FF VII was a seminal event in FF history, but the market is quite a bit larger and the PS2 in 2004 and 2005 is a stronger market than the PSOne ever had, IMO.

Not really. FFVII/VIII/IX+DQVII actually outsold FFX/X-2/XI+KH+DQVIII... though this generation's not over yet, on a game by game basis Square Enix is seeing the exact same declines Nintendo is in their brands. In Square Enix's favor though, they've cemented KH as a new top tier franchise, while Nintendo's efforts with Pikmin and Animal Crossing have all been a bit less spectacular. But then KH is also tied to well established IPs (most of which are Disney licenses even)... it's more like Mario Kart, Smash Bros or Wario Ware in that regard than a truly new IP. Actually, it's more like Jump Super Stars or Gran Turismo... a new series who's success is really dependant on established licenses to a large degree.

The current gen numbers are from December 2004 by the way.

And with Vice City selling 7 million (including Double Pack), is it the best selling videogame in the US since, what, Super Mario Bros. 3?

About the previous gen sales:
Those N64 software sales are amazingly high. I don't see how people could say the console bombed. Mario 64, GoldenEye, Mario Kart, and Ocarina of Time outsold all of the PSX library! Donkey Kong 64, Diddy Kong Racing, and Star Fox also have incredible sales.

Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow sold a ridiculous amount of copies...nearly 5 million each! Not surprising of course. Pretty much every single kid in the country had a Pokemon game back in the late 90s.

I thought Final Fantasy VII sold more than 2.5 million. I think Final Fantasy X and Kingdom Hearts have almost surpassed it by now.

*jumps of shinking ship*

Really now, I dont see how Pokemon DS will save anything, yes Pokemon will still sell a great deal and will always be a profitable venture for nintendo but its importance in the market is truly diminishing.

There was definitley a negative trend from the first "generation"(blue, red, green..., btw. why are blue, red and yellow listed as GBC games(I thought they were GB games and silver, gold and crystal were the GBC games)? And where is green?) and the remake(yellow) compared to the second(silver, gold + crystal).
But if you then compare silver, gold and crystal to ruby, sapphire and emerald, you'll see, that this is in fact stopped. I'm quite sure that Emerald will outsell crystal(altough it has DS and PSP as competitors), ruby and sapphire will sell about 0.8-1.0m less per edition than silver and gold, which means that fire red and leaf green will be able to more than only compensate that.

Jar,

You got a link to those sales numbers? I've never seen the 9-10M units for FFVII, but I know I heard 5-6M for FFX,
Not offhand... I'm going off memory for everything really (which is why I'm giving ranges). I do remeber Square targeting sales of 10 million lifetime for FFX before release though.

I think people underestimate Mario Kart DS as a hardware mover. MK64 sold almost 5 million - and the only GBA version sold almost 2 million - all in the U.S. alone. The DS version will likely fall somewhere in the middle - especially if they nail the online play.
