NPD said: Wii Fit Outnumbers Halo 3

-I wouldn't have thought that CoD4 or GTAIV would make the list, but that being said, I have no idea what they're at currently.
They're both well above Halo 3.

By the time this gen will be over, there will be quite a few 10M+ sellers.:D

I don't understand this thread.

Is there like a population on GAF that thinks there should be mainly balance board and mini game collections being made industry wide and traditional games that have been evolving in complexity and graphics since the 80's should be phased out? Is this why there is disagreements?

The only thing these two products have in common is they are both used with a TV.

Actually is someone trying to show us than exercise software is here to stay?

Don't read that much into it. This thread and others like it are the Internet equivalent of someone leaving a flaming bag of dog crap on your porch. Everyone gets shit on their feet and nobody's happy except the person who started it.

Since when is Halo hardcore? Why do people think this? Stop it!

By all rights it should be. It's a first person shooter, requiring use of all buttons on a complex controller, with very competitive multiplayer.

Bungie/Microsoft just got lucky, or perhaps deserve credit, for successfully marketing a "hardcore" product to a general market.

I'm a gamer. Brought Wii Fit. Good exercise; helps with balance and core. Very good for tennis training.

I know many non-gamers. I was stunned at how many purchased or received a Wii and Wii Fit (or just Wii Fit) over the holidays. A funny thing happened with them. They brought a few real games like Boom Blox and Mario Kart Wii. At the moment, you might think nothing of this. Consider the implications to gaming: a wider demographic means developers might consider new ideas given this different demographic (in addition to stagnant ideas like... Halo 3). It also means that in the future, you might get some bright minds into the gaming industry who otherwise would have never considered it. The gaming industry is in dire need of the sort of people who didn't grow up gaming (no offense, I am one of these people, but development and gaming in general are stagnating in the vast majority of the industry, due to narrower and narrower catering to the hardcore and industry regulars who have this gaming background).

In the end, Wii Fit is good for gaming whether you like it or not.

Vocalizing distaste for it simply indicates that your mind is, or belongs back in middle school.

I agree with this post.

HALO FIT: sweat more with the hardcore.

Excellent use of the word evolving. While some games you are likely describing might see wonderful sales, they are markedly less complex than games of yesteryear. The industry is focusing more and more on offering a cinematic blockbuster experience - slightly amusing, seeing how fucking awful these games are in terms of substantial content (when movies, hell, TV shows > games, you know it's fucking awful)... And less and less on actual gaming.

My mind has wandered. Point being: Evolution does not necessarily produce something 'better' or 'more complex', and I am pleased you used the word, regardless of how you meant to use it.

This thread is part of the way gaf gets certain people ready for when the XBox Waggle and PS3.25 now with 8axis controller get announced.

We aim to limit the number of heart attacks caused by the news.

As of March 09 as per NPD:

Wii Fit: 6 million sold

Haloe 3: 5.9 million sold (greater than 5.8) lol

I know this is likely to turn into a flame war, but I'm curious as to some of the intelligent discussion a thread like this will bring. I personally did not enjoy Wii Fit, but I also understand I am outside of the key demographic.

I know you have thoughts, GAF.

Where's your God now, NeoGAF? :lol

The games aren't really comparable because they attract different people.

WiiFit is popular for fat grown ups. Halo 3 is popular for fat 13 year old children.
Entirely different crowds imo.

lol

Basically what I said too.

Impressive for Wii Fit, but I would like to see Nintendo try and sell 479,000 cat helmets. Maybe I should not tempt fate.

Amusing, but...

I think people make a fundamental mistake by listing groups of people, rather than traits or characteristics of people.

The two groups you mention are mutually exclusive. There is no overlap. In reality, there are a huge number of gamers who have individual traits and characteristics that lead them to be interested in the Wii Fit.

The thread where WiiFit takes over the Ps3 will be one of the most epic threads in NeoGAF history. Men, you should get ready and make GIFs that take 20 minutes to load right now.

I think publishers and developers confuse people by releasing shipped numbers. For instance take two since day one touted GTA IV numbers of ten's of millions meanwhile it sold less than halo 2 and 3 and isn't close to last gen GTA's in units sold from NPD iirc.

Doom, Quake, Half Life, Halo, Call of Duty, Medal of Honor, Gears, Goldeneye, Battlefield...

You give mainstream gamers too little credit.

Madden is quite complex yet sells tons every year

Meh, I wasn't being serious.

Both games are perfectly comparable when it comes to the buying public. There are enough gamers I know who bought WiiFit and enjoyed the hell out of it.

I just think it's stupid how people attack WiiFit as if it isn't a part of the gaming business. As much as the game doesn't appeal to me at all, it's still a part of the gaming business.

That's the irony. Doom was always fairly mainstream. It was played by and large, at work, by a fairly broad range of people, although I suspect mostly dudes.

That's not surprising as Wii Fit is still continuously being marketed (I can buy it at my local Shoppers Drug Mart) whereas the marketing for Halo 3 stopped about a month after it was released.

If there's one thing that Sony and Microsoft should learn from this generation is that it's possible to continue to market games long after they've been released.

Also of course the potential market for Wii Fit is much bigger than that of Halo but that's obvious.

well, Wii Fit is just as much an accessory as it is a game, in which its marketing doesnt really apply to Halo and the like. Also, Halo is a "core" game, so people who want Halo, know when its going to release, and will buy Halo, or will buy Halo when they buy a 360.

You can say Sony and MS should market new IP games such as LittleBigPlanet, etc, throughout the life of the console.

Yeah, I got a shit-eating grin on. Or, I really was wondering what some of the people thought. And in between the bullshit there has been some insight. The internet is full of assholes and shit they start, but that wasn't the intent of this thread...

... though I knew it'd be fun to watch :)

It's not a hardcore FPS.
