The industry managed to rack up $791.1 million in total sales for new hardware and software at retail in October, according to data-tracking firm The NPD Group’s latest report. That’s up 5 percent from 2012, when the industry generated $755.7 million in revenue. That doesn’t match the monster $1.08-billion September total, but that wasn’t expected.

Again, software sales made up for slipping hardware numbers. New game sales were up 12 percent to $482.5 million. That’s compared to $432.6 million in 2012. Consoles only produced $171.7 million, which is down 8 percent from $187.4 million in the same period last year.

Nintendo 3DS marked its sixth consecutive month as the country’s best-selling video game hardware system, with more than 452,000 units sold, thanks in part to the launch of Nintendo 2DS and sales of Pokémon X and Pokémon Y. Sales of Nintendo 3DS hardware in October doubled last month’s tally*, and marked the most units any portable video game system or home console has sold in a single month in 2013.

Pokémon X and Pokémon Y were the No. 1 and No. 2 top-selling titles last month, with more than 1.7 million units combined, making October the biggest month for Nintendo 3DS software all year. Total Nintendo 3DS first-party software sales hit more than 2 million units sold, the highest tally since the report for December 2011, which included sales of hit games Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7.
In October, Xbox 360 was the number one selling console in the U.S. market and maintained its lead as the number one console in 2013, selling 166,000 units.

October 2013 NPD highlights:
· Total retail spend on the Xbox 360 platform in October (hardware, software and accessories) reached $283 million, the most for any console in the U.S. (Source: NPD Group, October 2013).

· During the month of October, Xbox 360 held five of the top 10 console game titles, including: “Batman: Arkham Origins,” “Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag,” “Battlefield 4,” “NBA 2K14,” and “Grand Theft Auto V” (Sources: NPD Group, October 2013).

Next week, Xbox will welcome a new era of games and entertainment with the launch of Xbox One on November 22 with festivities kicking off the evening of November 21. ACIV and BF4 down because of next gen anticipation I'd imagine. ACIV below Batman is really surprising.

And I also guess they launched right at the end of the month.

Nintendo needs to do something about this:
8. Skylanders: Swap Force (Wii, 360, PS3, Wii U, 3DS)
9. Lego Marvel Super Heroes (360, PS3, Wii U, 3DS, PC)
We don't know how far apart those platforms are in units, but Wii > Wii U on Skylanders and Wii U beaten by PS3 and 360 on LEGO games...that has to turn around, or Nintendo will have even less 3rd party support.

Seems like AC:IV is underperforming.
Its an odd game, it looks to be even further removed from the assassin stuff that drew people to the series, but probably has the best alternative gameplay thats strong enough to carry it without the assassin element. Game may have sold better if it had simply been called black flag and hyped as a new ip as opposed to being an ac title.

Yeah, this is not good. I would have expected the Wii U versions to be higher than the PS3 versions at least.

Curious if second month of GTA will beat Pokemon X and Y combined. Will wait for numbers.

Also, NBA seems really low. Isn't it a top 5 seller for the year the past few years?
