NSMBWii reaches 10 million sold!!

As crazy as it sounds NSMB might beat the 360 SKU too by the end of January. Maybe.

Watch the vid though. The "I believe so" is more of a continuation of his statement "On one particular platform" than a response to Geoff's "Just on 360".

I did watch the video--I wrote the transcript. It's clear to me he's responding to the question.

I disagree--it's very clear (to me) that he's responding to Geoff's question.

WW it likely already has. I don't think MW2 has hit 10 million units sold on any of the platforms individually while NSMBWii is already at almost 11 million. Total from the numbers provided = 10.5 million

Since Reggie specified NPD, that's what I'm talking about. Of course, schuelma would know more than I do.

But he's already won. He said one particular platform and it beat the PS3 by a fair margin already in the US.

I'm willing to allow that perhaps sales were not the primary driving factor behind Nintendo's initial decision to do the different colours. I'm not willing to extend that same grace to Capcom's decision to do multiple versions of each EXE game, though. There is clearly extra money in it.
I actually agree, which is why I'm critical of things like "collector's editions" and to a lesser extent, expansions and patches. I think that collectibility also somewhat explains some sales while (unintendedly?) masking other positives/detriments as well.

It would have to do more than a million more than the 360 version to pull it off. Not very likely. I do think it will do it by this summer, and pass the combined MW2 by the end of next holiday season.

I think it is less than 2 million behind the 360 version. NSMB will need to sell as much this month as it did in December to stand a chance.

I'd say pokemon is what popularized that concept

I remember seeing a brain age rip-off that was split up into two "versions" too

btw fun fact about NoA's attempt at bringing the series to america: they originally wanted the American version to have redesigned monsters to look "tougher" because they didn't think the cuter pokemon (squirtle, pikachu, jigglypuff etc) would be marketable with the climate of the industry.

NSMBWii will sell much more than Super Mario Galaxy. is it because of the 3D vs. 2D thing? or are there different factors?
2D gameplay is more accessible to casual gamers, and the well-implemented multiplayer really does give it a leg-up on Super Mario Galaxy given the Wii's "play together" philosophy and primary userbase.

I hated NSMBDS. The leveldesign is just too one dimensional, too SMB1-ish, and I truly disliked the graphical style. My favourites in this franchise are either SMB3, SMW (possibly the best platform game ever made), and if that counts, SMW2: YI (I hated it's unprofessional DS remake).

I don't know if NSMBWii would be good for my taste, but the graphical style is again the same uglyness I saw in NSMBDS.

I didn't like NSMBDS either but NSMBWii is just pure platforming sex. I'd probably rank them this way though:

SMB3>NSMBWii>Yoshi's Island>SMW

Haven't played a 2d mario seriously since 95, but its always good to see an oldtimer(Mario) show up a whippersnapper(MW).
Not ragging on the quality of one in regards to the other, just saying.

I wouldn't rank SMB3 into the 1st spot for myself. It's a fantastic game, but SMW tops it from nearly every aspect (even with the enhanced sound/graphics on the GBA and SNES): replaying levels, more variety, more secrets and more depth, let alone Yoshi. When you played a level or a minigame in SMB3, you are done with it. If you use your frog, hammer bro etc. suit from your inventory, you used it, and never get it back.

Seriously, it's not.

Personally I liked SMB3's graphics and leveldesign more than the blandness that was SMW (comparatively) but who really cares, different folks, different strokes, both games are great and among some of the best platformers.

Wow you actually liked the hideous graphic style in Yohsi's Island? But you hate the one in NSMBWii.

One looks incredibly organic and hand-drawn, the other looks like it crawled out of an SGI computer's butthole. It's not hard to see why someone would go for YI's art style over NSMB's.

Geez its amazing how one company dominates that list. Who is your source?

I dunno if you ever read the Game Informer debuting Epic Mickey, but apparently Disney has gotten the memo about Mickey Mouse being stale.
Oh yes just read up on it. Seems interesting.

Is your least favourite film in the series is The Empire Strikes Back because it was 'the most boringest one'?

I normally don't endorse harsh language to act like a tough guy on messageboards, but this is a special case, fuck yourself you stupid cunt.

I'm not even joking
I remember it being laughed at in Gamepro or some equivalent rag because it wasn't as technologically advanced as Donkey Kong Country. 15 years later and YI still looks gorgeous and DKC looks like a dog's butt. Miyamoto was right!

That's not my point, my point is it wasn't liked at all by the mainstream people, it was released nearly next to DKC2 and YI was NOT looked like god's gift on earth.
If you're doubting it's meh reception you just weren't there.

I love it more than most here, heck I'm still waiting for a 3d game with that artstyle

Ehn, depended on what you were reading. Gamepro gave it a 4.5/5 but they liked DKC2's graphics better. Gamefan went fucking ape-shit for Yoshi's Island and only knocked it points for the crying Mario sound effect. EGM liked it a lot, too, saying it was one of the best games of the year and giving it their award for action game of the year.

The only weak score from any mainstream source was Game Players, who gave it a 76%. It's true that all of those publications save Gamefan thought DKC2 was the better-looking game, but most agreed that both games looked and played fantastically.

Eh, I don't remember that at all. Yes, DKC was the biggest thing graphics wise back then, but Yoshi's Island also had it's share of people who supported it for it's unique and beautiful artstyle.

Can someone avatarise this image please?

Even at 90x67 (90px width limit + forced original aspect ratio) it's over the size limit. You're not going to get it at <150KB without cutting frames, I'm afraid.

Edit: Not sure how that 'Y' got there. :x

I'm thrilled that NSMBW did this well. I knew it would do well, but certainly not this well, this quickly. Good for Nintendo. Now... bring on Galaxy 2 please. :D

People hating on Yoshi's Island wat?

The only dudes who didn't like it were two whiney Sega fans in my class.

We were eight years old, grand discussions

With good reason! I've seen drawings hanging on fridges with a more appealing art style.
The colors are hideous, the texture effect unappealing, the entire presentation is created so that it only appeals to 2-3 year olds. That that's what they were going for doesn't make it any better.

Dang it, thanks none the less (I guess you'd be using it if there was a way :lol )

On the YI part of the debate, it was NOT universally loved at least not this side of the atlantic.
Yes it got good score (like Super Metroid), it was seen as a good game (like Super Metroid) BUT it was not seen as a must have like Mario Bros 3 or Mario World were (again like Super Metroid).
Heck I mean we're talking about a game in a serie of games that shaped the industry, do to anything but earth shattering success is kind of disappointing (unlike Super Metroid)

And for the record : Yoshi's Island is simply the closest I've ever played to a perfect game,
so no I'm not arguing about the quality of the game.

Oh, you're in Europe. Yeah, well, you guys thought Jerry Lewis was frigging hilarious, so um...hm. Glad you personally have got some taste though!

Probably not in the US.

As of 3rd Jan 2010, MW2 is at 5.8M on the Xbox 360.

While NSMB Wii is at 4.2M for Nintendo Wii. Thats a 1.6M lead for MW2.

DKC still looks good, not sure where people are getting the idea that it looks bad these days. That said DKC2 and DKC3 do look more refined, though that is to be expected.
