NTSC SNES cart prices

Fuck me. Megaman X 3 is still the only X game I need to have all the X games. $60 is a deal back when it was at Gamestop compared to this shitty price now. At least I managed to buy out most of the good games from Gamestop for less than $30 when they starting getting rid of old games. Final Fantasy 3, Earthbound, Secret of Mana,Chrono Trigger, ect.
I bought X3 (and X2 and 7) for $2 each from a video store clearing out their SNES games. I gave them to a friend for Christmas. I wish I'd kept them for myself.

No, the amount of money I speak of would be enough to purchase rights to make the original games. Win win for all because royalties get paid to whoever owns the rights...like music and how if a radio station plays a song they pay a royalty to the proper "owner".

You're not going to be able to purchase the rights to these games.

Lets talk hypothetically and say that you were able to get the rights, you are still going to have to get by all the weird IP rights, like certain music.

Again hypothetically, you are going to have to get the machinery which doesn't exist anymore.

I have pretty much every SNES game I want but I haven't bought Megaman X3 because it's so expensive to get one in half-decent condition.

It all depends on where you look.
I go around to small mom-n-pop stores, yard sales, thrift shops; I can usually find interesting things for cheap.
I've been picking up every non-current-gen related item, in hopes to fix them up and repair them... maybe even turn around and sell them ..or give.. to a nice gamer that will take care of them for (hopefully) forever.
some of it's ridiculous though.
I'm sitting on top of 5 sega genesises (genesii?)
Some people just seem to throw old consoles and things away... it makes me sad.

You guys should post your SNES/SFC collections. Might as well, can't think of any other threads where you can.

Had a NES and N64 when I was a kid ,but never got a SNES untill pretty recently.
Collecting SNES games now can get pretty expensive. Even here in "Pal" land.
"Link to the past" was probably my most expensive purchase.

My small collection:
Super Mario world
Super Mario allstars
F-Zero
Pilotwings
The magical quest starring Mickey mouse
Super ghouls 'n ghosts
Starwing (starfox)
Link to the past
Batman returns
Super Tennis
Pop'n twinbee
Doom
Wing commander
Sim city
Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster Busts Loose!
Mortal Kombat

off the top of my head:

Final Fantasy 2
Final Fantasy 3 (with MANUAL!)
Chrono Trigger
Chrono Trigger in box(JPN)
Actraiser(JPN)
Super Game Boy(JPN)
Front Mission(JPN)
F Zero
Pilotwings
Yoshi's Island
Mario World
Mario All Stars
Mario Kart
Link to the Past
Castlevania 4
Contra 3
Gradius 3
UN Squadron
Super Scope 6
2 copies of Donkey Kong Country for some reason.
Sim City
Illusion of Gaia
Ken Griffey Jr baseball
Lost Vikings

This thread is just making me sad about the current state of the 3DS VC. I just want a way to play this generation on the go, with a portable device.

I don't even bother with eBay unless the prices are cheap. I usually do the rounds to some thrift stores, pawn shops and a local game store here that still sells retro stuff.

Got all these for $19.99 each at most. Carts are almost mint and work 100% too.

Kind of off topic, but do all US SNES models support RGB? I'm looking to replace my busted SNES soon.

As long as it's not the SNES Jr. redesign, yes.

Well, you can apparently mod the SNES Jr. to support RGB, but it doesn't support it out of the box.

Do we have some videogame collectors OT?, it could be used to upload pics of your snes carts or PS1 discs

nope been saying for a while we need one would be cool to have one so we could trade our doubles or give heads up if games others are looking for pop up on the nets also a ton of people on gaf have some sicks collections

Holy crap, I didn't even know Super Turrican 2 was worth that much, I bought a loose cart last year for about €10,-.

I do the think the bubble is going to pop though, at least for more common only cart-only stuff.

A lot of these carts have millions of copies out in the wild, and they are pretty durable. Also, more and more are being unearthed out of dusty closets and into collector rotation as time goes on.

The B/S/T thread in community is probably the closest thing to this.

Y'know what I have trouble finding at decent prices?

Officially licensed cartridge units/racks to store loose cartridges.

I've had some listed a few times...just sold a CIB of Donkey Kong Country on ebay that I no longer wanted because I thought people wouldn't be interested here...opps.

I have boxed copies of almost all the SNES games I want except for perhaps a Super Gameboy, Harvest Moon, Super Mario World and Chrono Trigger. Buying those complete will cost a pretty penny.

I haven't had much luck in the thrift stores when it comes to SNES games...my only luck is a CIB of Pocky and Rocky (The first one) but that's about it. Some of the retro game stores here sort of overprice their games quite a bit so I'm usually stuck either visiting the flea markets in season or evilbay.

Probably going to have people freak out on me, but back in 2008 I had about 40 or so snes games that I just threw in a dumpster. I had long since lost my system and just carted them around every time I moved so I decided to throw them. Trying to sell them on eBay / whatever seemed like too much work.

Looking at the prices I could have made several hundreds today. Oh well.

On the other hand, I'm also one of those horrible people who just flattens down boxes and puts big rubber bands around them and stores them in a big box in the basement. They just take up way too much space. Stick the manuals in a box in the basement too. And don't really go out of my way to get either boxes or manuals when buying games, just have the boxes and manuals from the ones I had gotten new when they came out (which cover a decent portion of them).

I do appreciate the whole Complete in Box scene, but honestly I'm trying to keep some old PC boxes in pristine condition for the sake of keepsake whatevers and they're taking up half my fucking closet. Carts/DVD cases of modern games are fine, but these significantly bigger boxes and all kinds of inserts and materials that they have begin to take up an insane amount of space very quickly. I don't plan on getting many CiB games for that reason. So yeah, I agree with that, even if I appreciate the Box collecting thing as well.

Sorry, cut and pasted from my game list which needs work. I need a better way to list 530 games, and this isn't including XBLA/PSN/Steam and physical PC games :(

A lot of these carts have millions of copies out in the wild, and they are pretty durable. Also, more and more are being unearthed out of dusty closets and into collector rotation as time goes on.

I don't really think this will happen unless some major bootlegger comes along and ruins it for everyone. Lots of these games have just been thrown away. I remember when I used to read retro-gaming forums, many of the best finds were in the trash. I have no idea what GameStop and company have done with the large amounts of old games they have, but I'm guessing they cleared stock somehow. Probably crushed them all.

Video gaming still has an expanding audience, too. Lots of people joining who weren't around for the console release.

I just use Excel for my lists. Works well, allowing for multiple columns for different data, easy sorting capabilities, and a variety of other stuff. And much less time-consuming and bloated than the various online list storers.

And, yeah, if I had unlimited space, sure, keeping all the boxes pristine would be nifty. But, just don't have the space for all of that at the moment, not to mention the added cost of if I really wanted those for every game I got (leading back to the topic/OP topic of prices), and more concerned with just having the games themselves, that's fine by me.

Gamestop is preparing to resell some via powerup rewards I believe. Others through their normal website. So I guess they just have a decent amount of them still in stock.

Has anyone ever been able to fully communicate the law regarding downloading roms? I've read everything from you can do it if you create the rom yourself, you can download them for 24 hours etc. I remember going to sites where you can play these games in your browser. Is that illegal?

The 24 hours thing was total BS that someone invented when they were first going around to "justify" having them.

To play them "in browser" they have to be downloaded and at the very least put into ram, that would be an illegal copy.

You are legally allowed to make backups of your own games/music/etc but you aren't allowed to break the protections game companies put on their hardware to play them (DMCA). This was recently reaffirmed by the Department of Justice who reaffirmed it was okay to jail break your phone (not from the carrier however unless you get their written permission starting Jan 1st) but not tablets (yes, the only difference is having a cell radio and a microphone....) or game consoles.

You got me looking and I found this article on Joystiq that is talking about it.

One of the questions we had after seeing Raines reveal this initiative in a Polygon interview is where the material comes from initially. It turns out that despite clearing older games out of stores by dropping the prices, GameStop still has a lot of them kicking around. "Well, we don't have a lot of NESes or Dreamcasts," he said, referring to two hypothetical systems I brought up. "That's some pretty old stuff. But we just took Game Boy Advance out of stores recently, about a year and a half ago. Original Xbox, I think we took out of stores in 2009, as I recall. We're reducing the footprint of PlayStation 2."

From the article, it doesn't really sound like they have much prior to the sixth generation. Also, I had no idea Gamestop was trying to get people to sell their retro games at their retail outlets.

I'm new to collecting for the SNES and I just recently bought a console and some games through ebay to get started. There are deals out there on eBay but man they're few and far between. I thought I'd share the prices including shipping of everything I have got in the last month. Not that they're great deals or anything but just for fun, and yes I know I'm part of the problem with raising the demand/prices for SNES carts.

Prices include shipping
SNES console in pretty good shape with Super Mario World $43
$(KGrHqF,!nUF!IOjbvEiBQZzTPGL2!~~60_12.JPG

Star Fox $5
Street Fighter II Turbo $5
Another copy of Super Mario World $5
Link to the Past w/ manual $21
Donkey Kong Country $10
Pilotwings $6
F-Zero $3
Super Mario Kart $14 (Craigslist)

$113 total so far

I'm now hunting down Yoshi's island and Super Metroid but I'm going to be a little more patient to try and find a good deal. Also I've got lots of games to play in the mean time and for a little over $100 it's money well spent.

Those red carts--Doom and Maximum Carnage?

Bingo. And the Black is Killer Instinct, of course. Not sure what else is out there for colored SNES carts, although I'm sure there are some others.

For other systems, most of the colorful NES ones are the unlicensed ones (Tengen games, Quattro Adventure, etc.), aside from the Zeldas of course. N64 was more colorful. Aidyn Chronicles (Black), Donkey Kong 64 (Yellow), Rayman 2 (Green), Pokémon Stadium 2 (Gold/Silver half and half), and the Zeldas, of course.

While I wouldn't want every game to be different colors, since then it would just be a mess, a bit of color in there is fun, which frankly was the primary reason I got Doom and Maximum Carnage.

I'm one of those "bizarre" collectors who doesn't care about boxes at all for cartridges, so most of them were tossed in the trash. Manuals are nice to have (kept all of mine that came with them) but not necessary.

I've moved over more towards cosplay photography as an interest over game collecting, so I don't buy as much as I used to. Still, I'd love to get my hands on Terranigma, Final Fight Guy, and a few other randoms one of these days.

I'm planning on collecting the major consoles once I have my own proper place and disposable cash. I'm one of those "must come in a box" people for games though. For some reason, I really can't bear just seeing the carts.

I got Final Fantasy III, U.N Squadron, Pilotwings, Street Fighter 2, Gradius III, and ActRaiser for 12$ at a goodwill the other week. Pretty good find.

Some of these collections are making me really jealous right now. Damn!

Rarest thing I have is Ninja Gaiden Trilogy with the manual in great condition. Threw away the box on my last move. :(

I don't have a lot, but I've got some good stuff.

Final Fantasy II
Final Fantasy III (complete in box)
Chrono Trigger (complete in box)
Secret of Mana (complete in box)
Secret of Evermore (complete in box)
Mortal Kombat (complete in box)
Super Mario World
Out Of This World
Legend of Zelda Link To The Past
Illusion of Gaia (complete in box)
Lufia Fortress of Doom (complete in box)
Killer Instinct (in box, with manual, minus the sountrack)

I do appreciate the whole Complete in Box scene, but honestly I'm trying to keep some old PC boxes in pristine condition for the sake of keepsake whatevers and they're taking up half my fucking closet. Carts/DVD cases of modern games are fine, but these significantly bigger boxes and all kinds of inserts and materials that they have begin to take up an insane amount of space very quickly. I don't plan on getting many CiB games for that reason. So yeah, I agree with that, even if I appreciate the Box collecting thing as well.

I know the feeling. Boxes take up way too much room.

I'd be willing to pick up some of the classics with a box. Link to the Past, Super Mario World, Chrono Trigger... but obscure game X? fuck dat

Good god, this thread has made me so happy that I still have my original SNES and favorite games already in excellent condition. I was always a real nut about keeping my boxes, hell I still have the offers to join Nintendo Power and stuff.

I guess I'm sorta part of this scene without knowing it. I set mine back up while the cable was out after Isaac and it's been great remembering how genuinely great some of these games were. I don't have anything rare, but X2 and 3 would probably be the only things I'd really want to add any time soon.

Here's my small SNES collection. Demons Crest, Dracula X, and Ninja Gaiden Trilogy are the highlights. I have them just because I like them. I had no idea that they were worth so much.
