Nutella Mug Cake

Microwaves are damn cheap (like £50), how could you not afford that? Or would you rather buy a videogame than something useful?

Actually it is because I don't have a need for a microwave... My last flat had one which I would occasionally defrost with, but then I could just thaw it hours before.

Certainly not buying one to make cakes in!

Still don't get it, microwaves have so many good uses like reheating leftovers or canned soup. I'm too lazy to make my own soup so without my microwave I wouldn't be living as healthy.

I don't have left overs (not a fat bastard)... Sometimes I make double portions to stash and reheat, but I reheat everything in saucepans, including canned soup. I genuinely don't see it as a necessity.

Last video game I bought was about 1.5 months ago, at £20 btw :p

Yeah sorry :p This is still Gaming-Age and I see too many people who claim to not have money for something useful because they spend a ton on useless crap.

The recipe can be found here.

I made it about an hour ago, it was delicious. It has more of a brownie texture to it, but still good nonetheless. I would recommend using a big mug/cup, as it might overflow.

Fancy that. I made some chocolate porn worthy mug cakes the other day. Self-saucing puddings...

Your cakes look so neat. Mine didn't care what size container they were in, they just went nuts.

Same boat here, renting a flat and it didn't come with a microwave, so I thaw stuff by getting it out of the freezer the day before and reheat anything I need to in the oven or in a saucepan. Looks like a good recipe to try but not buying a microwave just for this. Also in the UK, funnily enough. The last six or so places I've lived in have all come with microwaves though so it's not a UK thing.

I don't have a microwave but I want to try baking it with an oven. How long and what temperature I can use then?

If you're taking the time to put this in the oven, just make an actual cake or brownies. All of these mug cakes are terrible and quite a poor substitute for legitimate baking.

It's akin to dressing up a Hostess cake and calling it a fancy homemade dessert; there's a misplaced sense of self-satisfaction because you've "made" something instead of just shoving a wad of sugar and fat directly into your mouth.

Did they seriously add more sugar to a nutella cake? ...why?
Because it's already going to give you diabetes so you might as well throw more sugar in it.

Honestly i don't see the appeal in nutella but then again i am not a fan of chocolate.. or cakes.. but i do love pie.

Oh, super disappointing. I thought the mug was made of Nutella chocolate and you could eat the whole thing. :(

Need a bigger cup too lol. How did it taste?

It was OK. I used half a tablespoon of sugar, and about the same of oil. I think next time I would not even bother with the sugar and oil and just add an extra spoon of Nutella.

If you're making it to the OPs recipe, I would say make it in a bowl and split between three mugs.

The texture was a bit weird, but I've never had microwave cake before. It looks dry but is quite moist in the mouth. Nice little bits of melted Nutella where I didn't mix it well.

Here's the inside:

I like how the recipe has you add whipped cream and chocolate sauce on top twice.

Top with whipped cream and a little chocolate sauce if desired.

2. Top with whipped cream and chocolate syrup. Enjoy!

i've made these before, once out of nutella, once with chocolate syrup, and another with ovaltine. i don't like them, taste way too much like egg.

Man, I'm not really the biggest Nutella fan, but I never had any idea that these "cakes" could be made so quickly.

My family would probably go nuts over this back home if I told them about this, since they bake and they love Nutella.

DietRob

i've been begging for over 5 years.
I'm sorry these look disgusting. No way am I going to be making this crap like I did with the Slutty Brownies and planning to do with the Pinata Cookies. PASS!

A little off the mark this time GK86.

this show is not Breaking Bad why is it not Breaking Bad? it should be Breaking Bad dammit Breaking Bad
Look delicious, very tempting, if you want diabetes, high-cholesterol. And the mug is not edible, I thought this was some special edition Nutella thing.

Just made some...

Not that good. It's nice I guess, but I'd only eat that when high.

It's just so... Blegh tasting. But I guess all mug cakes are.

Post when you make the Pinata cookies. I'm hoping to make some this upcoming weekend.

And I will get you with the next treat.

Hold on, friend! I'd love to share with you some swell news about the Windows 8 Metro UI! Wait, where are you going?
We just made 2 cups of these, I though it was amazing, even without the whipped cream and chocolate sauce. The Nutella added just the right amount of gooeyness. I used very large mugs and there was no overflow but it did rise to almost the top.

It's a bit much for one person though. VERY easy to make. Just make sure you stir it very well and don't overcook it. I thought 1:30 wouldn't be enough time but it turned out just right.

I'm not convinced about microwave cooking but since you've made it and all, does it taste good and cake-like?

It tastes and looks great if you take the extra two or three minutes placing the cream and berries or marmalade.

I made it a second time for some others earlier this morning and yes this mixture will need two 700ml mugs or both of them will rise too much (i did use baking powder though) and overflow.

By the way I calculated the amount of calories for the original recipe and topping it with 60gms of whipped cream and it is

1572 Calories
34.6g Protein
133.7g Carbohydrate
99.2g Fat

Topping it with a couple of berries will tip the calories to over the 1600 calorie mark so it is better to serve it for four people rather than 2 or three. if I ate this all myself I wouldn't need to eat for the rest of the day as my daily caloric needs are only about 1600-1800 calories depending on what i do during the day. (im only 58 kilos)

We made this tonight and it is fucking digusting. I love Nutella, but this shit was way, way too sickly sweet. After a couple of tea-spoon sized scoops we were all done and chucked the rest. Avoid.

Well I finally got around to making this last night, and since I hate Nutella I substituted that for peanut butter and Strawberry Quik powder instead of cocoa and DAMN it tasted great - the perfect amount of sweetness which was not that much at all, soft, moist, and that peanut-buttery taste was delicious. It was like some kind of sorcery to be able to make this in 4 minutes tops from scratch.

I'm gonna try the lite version next, this is nice to just bust out every now and then since I stopped eating sweets and cakes and the like for years now but man it was great.

Woa, just recently I had my first mug cake ever. This is a weird coincidence. It wasn't that bad as I was expecting it to be. Good w/ whipped cream
