I'm also building a new pc (please don't shoot, I'm tender), but wanted to know how this setup would fare with this new card. Forgive me, as I know very little about the whole setup;
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3P Rev 2.0 mobo
Rosewill RP550v2-s-sl 550w SLI power supply
Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz processor
Corsair xms2 2 gig (2 x 1 gig) ddr2 dual channel 1066 ram
Western Digital Caviar 500gb hard drive
I haven't decided on a sound card (I have a simple speaker setup) yet, but I'm really trying to keep this thing roughly around $1000. How would this fare? Do I need to make adjustments? What could be better but keep me around the same price?
You'll consider it in 3-7 years?Forgotten Ancient said:With a P4 3Ghz, it would be stupid for me to upgrade my 7600 GT wouldn't it? I'm using a Dell and don't feel comfortable switching out the mobo and processor, so I guess I'm stuck with this archaic whore.
Great looking card though, and I'll probably consider it when I finally build my new PC in 3-7 years.

I'm going to be in the US, Manhattan specifically, in mid-to-late November, and I'm curious as to what kinds of places might have these to take away.. the dollar is so so weak, I could easily pick up a couple and SLI them for relatively very cheap (less than 350 euro, perhaps).

AnandTech said:This launch really has the potential to introduce a card that could leave the same lasting impression on the computer industry that the Ti4200 left all those years ago. This kind of inflection point doesn't come along every year, or even every generation. But when architecture, process enhancements, and design decisions line up just right, the potential for a revolutionary product is high.
TomsHardware said:In the end, Nvidia has taken its time, but offers an exceptional card with the GeForce 8800GT. For about $230 it nearly displays the power of a GeForce 8800GTX (under 3%) twice as expensive, with the only downside being a slightly lower memory capacity (512 MB instead of 768 MB) and a bandwidth 10% lower than that of a GeForce 8800GTS. However, in games, the latter is usually outperformed by 30% without filters (using the 320 MB version) by the GeForce 8800GT and the GTX is only 12% higher. We have to say that the transition to the 65 nm process meant the arrival of more than just a couple of G92 on a wafer. By the way, this chip boasts 754 million transistors. It's small, consumes less than a GeForce 8800GTS 320 MB, and the 8800GT is also quite silent despite its single slot cooling system.
HEnthusiast said:The GeForce 8800 GT impressed us greatly; it provides a better gameplay experience than the GeForce 8800 GTS for less money. That is a good deal in our book. Given the huge 90nm die size that NVIDIA has been stuck with for the last year, I am sure it is a welcomed product for it as well. Nothing about the core architecture has changed, but NVIDIA was still able to take the GeForce 8 series and manipulate it in a way that it could execute performance between the GTS and GTX in a lower power envelope, and most importantly less money from your pocket. And don’t fool yourself either; NVIDIA is not just being Mr. Nice Guy. It is preparing for a real threat from AMD’s RV670 GPU that is soon to be launched on an even smaller process.
Neoseeker said:It's impossible not to be impressed by the performance of the BFG 8800 GT OC. It's just that simple -- the card is just that good.
When I was in California a few days ago for the unveiling of the G92 / 8800 GT to the tech press, NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang took to the microphone for a final question and answer period, at the day's end. One member of the audience had a question for Mr. Huang: "So," the tech journalist guy said, a bit of doubt -- or perhaps it was disbelief -- in his voice. "The 8800 GT is going to offer that much performance, for about $200 bucks?"
Jen-Hsun Huang, showing complete confidence, assured the tech journalist that yes, that was exactly the case: the 8800 GT offers the performance of a top-end card, for a price that many would be able to afford. Mr. Huang went on to add that NVIDIA only gets a chance to make a GPU like this about every four or five years. He said that a combination of many factors only allows for this kind of relative performance, at this relative mid-range price, only every blue moon. He said that the 8800 GT would prove to be one of NVIDIA's most memorable GPU releases.
While Mr. Huang's plainly visible confidence was reassuring, at the time, I wasn't sure whether to believe him. But after seeing all these benchmarks, I can understand why he was so confident -- he was so confident, because exactly what he said was true: the 8800 GT is a hell of a card. As anyone can see by looking at the numbers, it boils down to the BFG 8800 GT OC offering the performance nipping at the heels of 8800 GTX, for the affordable price of around $259 dollars.
FPSLabs said:So our initial projection that the 8800GT, according to our interpretation of NVIDIA’s nomenclature, would fall somewhere between the 8800GTS and the 8600GTS turned out to be utterly wrong. The card wipes the floor with the 8800GTS 640MB, which retails at $350 (USD), or a full $100 above the MSRP of the new D8P based 8800GT. Not only does it trump the 8800GTS, the 8800GT comes excruciatingly close to the performance of the twice-as-expensive GeForce 8800GTX and even beats it in rare instances. It seems like the perfect card.

Too bad I am not looking for a new PC, the GT looks like the dog's bollocks.NVIDIA Answers Gamers' Demands With NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT
New NVIDIA GPU Offers Record-Breaking Performance at a Consumer-Friendly Price
LONDON, UK - OCTOBER 29, 2007The NVIDIA® GeForce® 8800 GT, the latest in the standard-setting GeForce 8 Series of graphics processing units (GPUs), is hitting store shelves today. Specifically developed to answer enthusiast gamers demand for high-performing graphics at the 199 to 259 price point, GeForce 8800 GT offers a hyper-reactive, intensely robust gaming experience for the latest next-generation DirectX 10 games, such as Crysis, Hellgate: London, and Gears of War, as well as full support for current DirectX 9 games.
When we introduced the GeForce 8 Series family, our most savvy customers and press demanded a product with 64 stream processors and a 256-bit memory interface to deliver more performance at the popular 199 to 259 price point. Today we decided to raise the bar and deliver GeForce 8800 GT with 112 stream processors, a fast 256-bit memory interface, and our second-generation PureVideo HD technology, giving our customers an incredible value proposition. said Ujesh Desai, general manager of GeForce desktop GPUs at NVIDIA. At this price point, gamers are getting more performance and features than ever before.
GeForce 8800 GT is the perfect card for gamers that want to play Crysis, said Cevat Yerli, CEO of Crytek. By bringing such high performance to the sub-250 price segment, NVIDIA is allowing even more gamers to experience the full range of Crysiss stunning visual effects at maxed-out resolutions.
In addition to 112 stream processorseach individually clocked at 1. 5GHzand a 256-bit memory interface running at a blazing-fast 900MHz, the GeForce 8800 GT is designed for the new PCI Express 2.0 bus standard and is backwards compatible with the original PCI Express standard.
The GeForce 8800 GT also marries the best-in-gaming with the best-in-HD. It leverages NVIDIAs revolutionary second-generation video processing engine to deliver high-quality playback of HD DVD and Blu-ray movies on everyday PCs. The new programmable video processing engine takes on all of the high definition H.264 video decoding, freeing the CPU to perform other tasks and significantly reducing power consumption, heat, and noise.
GeForce 8800 GT-based graphics cards are available now from leading add-in card manufacturers, retailers, and system builders. For information on where to buy GeForce 8800 GT products, please visit www.nvidia.co.uk/wheretobuy

Mamesj said:just noticed this. I'm not doing the step up for the GT, but this worries me for when the new GTS launches. My step up expires on 12/03/07 so my window is a little short. I wonder if you can get on a waiting list or something-- that would be bullshit if you wanted to do the step up, but couldn't because an item is backordered, then get screwed when it expires.
Xdrive05 said:Yeah, I'm thinking about sending them another e-mail and asking, but the last time I did that it took them like four days to get back to me so it's probably not worth the effort. If I do it and they write me back I'll post it on here (about the backordered issue as well as the missing page).

Computers...are a pain. When you buy or build, don't look at any hardware sites and just use it till you really need an upgrade. I'm on P4 512MB of memory and I'm fine...well except this annoying onboard video with PCI only zzz. But this machine still does everything I need it to and I've got a PS3/Wii for games galore.

Your sources are correct.Xdrive05 said:Everyone I've asked about that who knows what they're talking about (presumably) says that won't matter. My board has PCI-E 16x, whatever that means, but I don't know if it's 1.0, 1.1, 2.0 or whatever. I'm sure it's not the latest iteration.
But what I've heard so far is that it'll work in ANY express slot, even the first version. But that's only from folks on hardcore OC forums so they MIGHT not know what they're talking about, but they probably do.
