Nvidia Geforce GTX 1070 Review Thread

Got my EVGA GTX 1070 FTW today. Card runs great, but the fan motors seem to be defective. At idle, the fans try to engage. They do fully engage at the temp target, but sometimes only one fans spins up while the other lags behind. I contacted EVGA support, and it needs to be replaced.

Edit: I uploaded a video. If you have an EVGA card, I'd check to see if your fans are doing the same.

Edit2: EVGA support says this is normal, and a replacement would do the same thing. Anybody else with an EVGA card experiencing fan behavior like mine?

Same here that's normal. They don't spin until certain temp. They can be twitchy once they do would be fine. You could just create a custom fan curve to have them work all the time if you want.

My EVGA GTX 1070 SC fans started making a weird clicking noise when they are at top speed. You would RMA that right? Probably will get worse in the future...

Check the fans cables. Some early users reported some fan cables weren't tucked correctly and were hitting the fins.

Got a Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1070 G1 Gaming (together with a fresh new computer: i6700 + 16gb ddr4 ram) and wow what a difference compared to my 770 GTX.
Running everything max at 1080p with a 144hz monitor is just awesome.

So quiet, love it. Nothing OC'd, not needed yet.

Yeah Gigabyte's fans are deadly quiet.

Definitely choosing them for my 1070.

Not sure if I'll OC though. Last time I would get random dead pixels while playing a game and then it'd crash.

No, I have updated to the latest nvidia drivers for my GPU, only that. Where can I find the hofix drivers?

I will get latencymon to check.

Also, I just played R6 with all on ultra and 150+ fps, no fps drops for now. Strangely I only notice this issue on RUST :\

EDIT: I just checked with latencymon, and the DPC bar stays green, no issue during gameplay, but I notice a LOT of hard pagefault errors. Image below

You do have the latency issue unfortunately, shouldn't be near 900 =/ i have the same thing on my 1080 and it sucks. The pagefault thingies are irrelevant though

I got my 1070, but there are certain games that I am getting horrible performance and I am confused as to why.

Metro 2033 Redux. I set the game based on Geforce Experience recommendations, but it runs terrible.

Check the game profile on the NV control panel make sure that power is set to maximum power so the card runs at full clocks all the time in the game. I had that problem with the Witcher 2.

Hmm .. thats weird because I'm on worse CPU 2500k but running Metro Last light Redux ultra at 70-90fps . 1080p though , are you on 4k ?

Ordered the Gigabyte - GeForce GTX 1070 WindForce OC yesterday.

Going to replace my 750 Ti with that (CPU: Core i7 4750)

Should get me a few more frames :D

Turns out I was using 4X SSAA, which tanks performance.

Disabled it in game and enabled FXAA in the nvidia control panel. Performs much better.

Yeah, seems to be the case. I talked to EVGA support, and was told it's normal. Other than the weird fans compared to other cards, it performs really well. I set the core to +100 from the start and it's rock solid at default voltage. I'll try to dial it in more later today to see what I get.

:( Can it be fixed?
Thank you all for the help

They're working on a fix. They released a "hotfix" driver that didn't fix my issue yet helped some people so i'm waiting for the next round.

I have an old 980 here that doesn't micro stutter or have high latency, but the second i put my 1080 in... stutter city. It's a bit depressing really.

Are all OC utilities the same? I'm using Zotac Firestorm since I have the Zotac AMP 1070, but is there something better?

Anyone else have the Zotac AMP 1070? What are your OC results?

msi afterburner is very popular although i can't say if it's any better than what you're using right now. it works with any card not just msi ones. plus when you install it you can also install rivatuner which is a must if you want to cap framerates and have an on screen display of performance stats.

I have AMP extreme. Haven't overclocked anything but whenever I do, will use either firestorm or afterburner. And I agree with the poster above, rivatuner is pretty great.

Why did you disable the 0RPM mode? At stock fan settings, the fan doesn't turn on at all until you hit 50C and it really has no need to turn on before then.

Been messing around with my Gigabyte G1 for a few days now and am relatively happy. Initially I was having some throttling issues but that was because the power management setting wasn't set to "prefer maximum performance" for some reason. These impressions are with 12GB of RAM, a 2500k @ 4ghz and stock card clocks. Basically for every game i started at 1440p/60fps, max settings, no AA and worked backwards from there.

Rise of the Tomb Raider: In DX12 it runs at 60fps for the vast majority of the time but still drops to 45-50fps in areas like Geothermal Valley. Dropping to 1080p doesn't make much difference so there's not much point, some sections are clearly CPU bound. 1440p is pretty vital for decent IQ in this game as well in areas with lots of foliage.

AC Syndicate: 1440p at 60fps was very attainable as long as you're willing to sacrifice PCSS. It does look very good the FPS hit is far too much - basically locked 60fps down to 45fps with PCSS Ultra on. There's two options here for 60fps - 1080p w/PCSS (Ultra still dips to 55fps at times) or 1440p 60fps with PCSS disabled. Game looks incredible either way. I should also mention that "driving" usually dropped to 55fps frequently no matter settings I used.

Doom 2016: Without doubt the easiest recent game to run. 1440p was at a locked 60fps 24/7 basically, and you could probably get away with adding some AA as well.

Project Cars: Didn't actually test this game much but with a lot of cars on screen and dynamic weather I was seeing dips to 50fps. Still very playable, and once agains dropping down to 1080p doesn't really help.

GTA5: This ran surprisingly well. 60fps virtually the entire time at 1440p even with PCSS on. I'm sure if I played more there would be instances where it drops, but from the 40 minutes I spent messing around it was rock solid.

Witcher 3: Despite what I said earlier this does run at 60fps constantly at 60fps aside from areas with 30+ NPCs and Novigrad which is quite obviously CPU limited. Absolutely stunning open world visuals at 1440p even if it was "downgraded".

Metro Last Light: Don't have Redux so this is just Vanilla. This game is definitely less demanding than the original, runs at 1440p/60fps with a sweat and still looks pretty crazy even by today's standards.

Fallout 4: Performance is absolutely terrible in this game still on my PC. The only difference is that I can crank the settings as high as I want compared to my old 970, but the big drops still occur in the same areas.

Crisis 3: Probably still the most demanding game I have. Locked 60fps indoors but once you get to the open outdoor areas the performance is all over the place. Dips to 40fps were pretty frequent. From what I remember C3 has always been CPU heavy, so I'm not all that surprised by the dodgy performance I get on my PC.

The Division: Similar situation to Syndicate - 60fps or 45fps with PCSS enabled.

Notable games that run at 4K 60fps: Mad Max, Alien Isolation, Dishonoured, Dragon's Dogma, Skyrim, Firewatch (with stuttering), Vanishing of Ethan Carter.

Hope this helps people who want to buy one and have an older CPU.

So I finally got my Zotac 1070 amp extreme installed today, and just my luck my motherboard is going down the crapper lol. Got 16gb of ram to go with it and the mobo won't detect any sticks in the third slot, guess that's a good excuse to get myself a new mobo/cpu now hah.

Anyways, for now I'm stuck running my 1070 on a 2600k with just 8gb ram.

Even then the difference is like night and day for me in some games come from a 780.

Witcher 3.for instance, high with some things turned down a little (like aa/shadows/grass) I would pull around 45'ish fps but it never felt "smooth" at all.

Now I'm running on high across the board with hairworks on and everything, hitting a stable 60fps and it feels buttery smooth. Though I haven't tried it in Novigrad yet though.

I never been a big fan of "Flashy" things on my pc's, leds and that jazz. However it is a little neat being able to use the firestorm app and being able to set the colors on the card , even making them slowly pulse , etc. Or you can even turn it completely off if you don't want any lights on (Which is great when you're trying to watch a movie lol).

The card is virtually silent too so far. I just played a little Witcher 3 but never heard the fans over my case fans (Gentle typhoons) or anything.

Also I can confirm that the card fits fine in the Haf x case, as long as you have the fan duct off the door fan on the case. Length wise it gave me a fright, it fit but there isn't a lot of room left.

If you have a smaller case I think this card probably won't work because of how long it is.

GTX 1070 EVGA SC GAMING ACX 3.0 PCI-E 8192Mb or
GTX1070 Gigabyte WindForce 3X PCI-E 8192Mb ??

I dont know!!! Gigabyte one is bigger, but i heard it is cooler....

You can't measure DPC while under load, only when the system is fully idle. I have 1300 DPC while playing overwatch, yet zero stutters or anything affecting gameplay/sound.

While idle i get this, which is what you should base the results on: http://i.imgur.com/1MJvXfe.png

From their FAQ:

Should I run my audio software while LatencyMon is testing my system?
In general, no. In particular, the interrupt to process latency that the software measures already simulates the workings of an entire audio process. You should run most tests without running any other software in the background. Running your audio software together with LatencyMon only makes sense if you wish to measure hard pagefaults of the audio process.

Maybe someone can explain this to me.

I now have a 750 Ti and ordered a Gigabye 1070 Windforce.

As I myself had no driver installed (though Windows 10 automatically installed a driver with January date) I downloaded the latest GeForce driver from Nvidia, installed it and got the GeForce experience, VR stuff and so on.

Can I now just exchange the card and it will work?

Also on the Gigabyte website - http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5922#kf I saw they have some kind of Gigabyte software for this card named "Xtreme Engine" which can switch the OC-profiles and probably does stuff specifically for my ordered card ...

Is this something I have to install alongside the whole Original Nvidia Driver with GeForce Experience?

Most likely yes if your current driver support the card you will be installing.

You may install it if you want to use it but most of this is better done by Afterburner. The only thing which is unique to that util is LED control usually.

I'd use this if you're switching cards to ensure no buggy drivers. It is very fast to do anyway.http://www.wagnardmobile.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=281

Step 1: Download DDU and extract it to a desktop folder
Step 2: Download the latest driver for your new card and place it on the desktop
Step 3: Start DDU and choose safemode, click OK and your system will reboot automatically
Step 4: DDU will open automatically upon restart into safemode, Nvidia should already be selected, so all you need to do is click ''Clean and shut down''
Step 5: After PC shuts down, insert your new card, boot up your PC and install the driver you placed on your desktop

Don't bother with the Gigabyte software for now.

Gainward Phoenix GS vs Palit Super Jetstream vs EVGA Superclocked... which one should I pick?

Is there another one as silent as those 3 while having a good amount of OC out of the box?

Nvm bought with the Golden Sample.

My MSI 1070 will not fit in my case. The length is fine but the width, or as they call it height, is too big. It physically will fit as my case is wide enough, but the way it's designed inside won't allow me to close the case up. The issue is the power connector placement. The 1070 is about 5 inches or bigger where my gtx 760 was only just over 4 inches.

The EVGA 1070s are listed as 4.4 inches in height, or width imo, but it looks like it wont fit either since the power plug is also too far back. On my 760 the power plugs are near the middle of the unit.

I know a short 1070 is being made but i cant find it anywhere yet, so I think i'll just get a 1060 SC Gaming for now.

The MSI 8G 1070 is nice, even has a back plate and leds just like the X. Can even use the X BIOS. Shame.

Is it just the power cable sticking up that's causing it not to fit? Because you can get angled adapters that could help with that, IE
http://www.moddiy.com/products/8%2d...eader-Connector-%2d-90%-Angled-%2d-Black.html

Also what PSU are you using? If it's modular you can just get a longer cable to plug it up your issue is length wise.

Anyone tried Quantum Break on this thing to see if 1080p/60fps is possible?

You can get ~60fps with resolution scaling up at 1080p, so 720p natively with a temporal reconstruction. I think medium settings with scaling off will give you similar performance. When I have time, I can play around with it if you like.

Edit:

Loaded up the game. At 1080p native/upscaling off, all max, I get mid 40s on average. Not really the smoothest experience with noticeable stutters.

Turning on scaling allows me to hit 60fps pretty consistently so far, the hit in IQ is noticeable but it still looks great and the higher framerate more than makes up for it.

I was able to hold 60fps pretty well without scaling with shadow resolution, shadow filtering, texture resolution, and geometry LoD maxed while having the rest set to medium.

I have the Zotac AMP 1070 (not the AMP Extreme) and I just get a meager +100Hz OC. Everything above it will reset the driver.

Should I toy around with voltages and power sliders?

I needed to reinstall the drivers after I switched the card from a 970 to a 1070.
I basically just hit setup again, let it reboot and everything worked.

So I noticed that since this afternoon, my MSI Gaming X core clock won't go below 1582 MHZ. When I play a game it throttles up to 2K+, but for some reason won't clock below that.

- It worked fine until this afternoon, haven't made any changes that I think would have prompted this.

- It used to throttle down to ~215 when not in use.

Any idea why this might be happening?

Hah, stuck on the exact same number here. Dumping BIOS to restart the driver with GPU-Z makes it behave properly, but it returns to this sooner or later. Performance levels have always been weird with nvidia cards for me.

I had that problem, but in my case, I changed the nvidia config to always be in high performance mode.
Try to see if that's your problem.

Edit: It was the Power Management Mode, change it to Adaptive.

Actually it is one of the larger ITX cases out there, which many people were pissed at Corsair for making the case too big. LOL!

This case is actually very easy to work in. I've worked in smaller cases before like the Silverstone Sugo SG13, now that was a little bit of a pain but all it takes is some pre-planning ahead of time. I would go with a PSU that is modular, the less cables the better.

How are you enjoying LoS2?

The shops here told me they faced out the old range of ITX cases including the 250D. Now, everyone's offering the Manta. I don't like the curved shape though. In any case, I might just import a Phanteks Enthoo Evolv ITX case. Can't wait to get to my first build.

Off-topic: As for LoS2, I finished it. I found it more enjoyable than GoW3 which I'm also playing right now (maybe because of the controls). Didn't care much for the story, but I see what the devs were trying to do with creating an old-school Castlevania adventure game with modern action mechanics.

Now that I got a better PSU, I'm trying to see how far I can push my card again. So far I'm able to go up 110 MHz to 1705/1895 MHz for my base/boost clock rates while boost 3.0 looks to top my card at 2101 MHz. Temp never went over 68c. I'm able to push the memory clock +1050 MHz but the total boost on GPU-Z shows as 2266 MHz instead of the 2002 MHz default clock. Does that sound right for the memory clock? Kind of confused why I'm adding more than 1000MHz boost but it only shows a 264 MHz boost when tested. I have GPU voltage and power limit maxed at 100% and +11% respectively.

Also is the firestrike demo unstable or does it push your GPU in a particular way? I was able to run multiple Unigine Valley benchmarks, game for hours, and stress test my GPU using MSi Kom buster for >5 hours, hitting 100% GPU load at higher clocks without issue. I load up the firestrike demo and it crashes on me. Turned down my clocks until firestrike was stable but I didn't know if the problem was my clocks or the demo.

That's a good question, because I had the same experience with Fire Strike

Thanks, that does in fact seem to have fixed the issue.

It's best to leave the card on max performance to ensure good frame rates in games with lower gpu usage. However, to fix down throttling, you need to edit certain apps to adaptive with individual app profiles. Namely, Chrome and Discord and whatever app you use to overclock like EVGA Precision.

Ta for the heads up, I'll do just that.

It's best to leave the driver at default and only use "max performance" when it's actually needed (it's usually needed when a game is using OpenGL or runs only in borderless window).

was anyone able to get in on the asus strix 1070 on slickdeals over the weekend? got it for $383 with free shipping from jet.com, shipped today and should be here wednesday. SO EXCITED! will be my first nvidia card since the 6600gt. my 1440p 144hz gsync monitor also came in today and performance from my current r9 390 has me feeling great about what the 1070 will be able to do. on that note, since im going from amd to nvidia what do i need to do in terms of drivers? how do i uninstall all the amd stuff?

I didn't know those existed, thanks. but i don't even think angled adapters would help. It's just exactly enough size to fit the card itself. It's a workstation case where the HDDs are mounted to a panel that folds up and hits right at the back of the card.

I just settled on getting a 1060 mini for now as it was in stock. and may wait and see if a shorter 1080 gets released. There is a 1070 mini out but it's hard to find anywhere.

My EVGA FTW is doing pretty well. I'm at +150 core and it's boosting over 2100Mhz at default voltage. I haven't messed around with the memory too much, but I'll tinker some more when my components are migrated into the new Lian Li case.

I've got my G1 at +100mhz core and +600mhz RAM. Seems to run okay, and the GPU temp tops out at 68 degrees. Happy with that for the time being.

Thought I would chime in after putting my new build together over the weekend. Stock EVGA SC was boosting around 1930mhz without touching it. It would stay at over 1900mhz constant while playing Overwatch. I have since conservatively added a +50 bump to it. It now boosts to 2000mhz. Stable through Firestrike and gaming. Have only bumped the memory to +150. Going to start messing with that now. I am fine with hitting 2000mhz on the core. See no need to go any higher as I like to keep things running cool.

Anyone got an MSI GTX 1070 Armor ? Just looking for any impressions really, as I'm thinking of getting one in a few weeks, as its not a bad price right now and the black & white fits my PC colour scheme much better than the Gaming X version.

Only thing I'm not liking is the 1070 Armor has no backplate for some reason (even though the 1080 Armor does ???) but I've seen a nice white backplate to go on it anyway, so no big deal.

I have the 8GB Armor OC and it's been great for me. I haven't messed about with fan curves and dark-magic like that as it makes my brain hurt so i can't give you a detailed report unfortunately. I was sure i had a backplate on mine but i'll check tonight before i go to Star Trek as i may be misremembering and probably am as my housemate bought a 1080 at the same time.

It's a nice replacement for my trusty GTX 670 and plays nicely with my old i5 3570k too. Someone else will have to give you figures as i haven't done any of that yet.

Thanks, seen some early user reviews saying it has no backplate, unless MSI have started shipping them with one now. Yeah I'm finally replacing my trusty MSI GTX 760, which is in my new Skylake build at the moment.

I'm guessing gaming performance is still solid like most 1070's seem to be.
