Nvidia Geforce GTX 1070 Review Thread

This is of particular interest to me. I have a 1080p tv but I would like to downsample to 720p in some games for passive 3D. Quick start guide gives some hope but I'm not quite sure. Needs to work in full screen mode.

In theory it should force your PC to believe the maximum resolution of your TV is 720p so it should work. You should be able to select the resolution you want and the hz option then just try automatic. I would test out a custom resolution in or copy the settings of one from Nvidia control panel to be sure. But really, it isn't hard and it should work. It did wonders for my old CRT.

So I add 720p @ 60hz as a "detailed resolution" in CRU or a custom resolution in Nvidia control panel (from which I can no longer downsample via DSR)...apply and select the resolution in display settings? That will make it "native"?

On my monitor I was able to force proper DSR by creating a fake hard native resolution for the monitor. I used Custom Resolution Utility (CRU) by ToastyX. There is a quick guide in the link.

Basically DSR works off your monitors native resolution, so custom resolutions only work if you trick Nvidia into thinking custom rez = native rez. CRU lets you force and change custom native resolutions so you can downsample from anything to anything your monitor supports.

Hmm I see, that's interesting and could be handy, thanks! :) I'm already familiar with CRU from using AMD cards before but if I get you correctly, wouldn't that cause DSR to use 74hz too? That wouldn't be too great. I really wish you could set the Hz Mode on a per-game basis in the drivers :/ Ideally I wish I could have just my desktop resolution running at 74hz and everything else at 60hz because I think even a 1070 would start to struggle with 74fps 1440p and some games like Street Fighter V for example feel very juddery at anything but 60hz.

Yes. I haven't used it in a while but it would cause it to use 74, but you should be able to setup one for 60hz and then just select that when you are going to play the game. It's a bit cumbersome but the only real option I can think of.

Got my MSI 1070 Armor installed, replacing my trusty old GTX 760. It looks great in my rig and matches my white colour scheme perfectly.

Tried overclocking with Afterburner and got up to 120+ core and 600+ Memory stable, any more and I stated getting crashes on Valley Benchmark but not a bad overclock.

Tried Just Cause 3 with everything maxed out at 1440p and getting over 60fps, so I'm well happy with the card. Big step up from the 760 which gave me 30-40fps at 1080p and not everything on max.

Okay, finally can afford a GTX 1070 and buying one today.

I am thinking of picking up one of the $430 ones that have a boost clock of 1760Mhz.

So does it matter whether I go with MSI Gaming X or the EVGA Gaming FTW?

I don't plan to overclock. In the future maybe, but for now I just want the highest possible factory OC right out of the box.

Edit: Okay I am definitely considering the Strix however I cannot find the length for the Strix. According to Rosewill my case can have a max video card length of 11.8 so I need to make sure the Asus Strix is under 11.8 inches.

Another option is to remove one of my drive cages which gives me 16 inches of clearance instead.

I may need to take my case apart and rearrange all of my drive cages to accommodate this since I have 3 HDDs which seems like a decent amount of work just to accommodate a new GPU.

Still going from a HD7950 to a GTX 1070. This will be a phenomenal upgrade.

While it will be slightly different from card to card, I don't think it will matter too much, as pretty much every card seems to boost the clock higher than the official spec on the box anyway, thanks to the new Boost 3.0, as long as the temps are good.

Thanks for the reply Yautja.

I just need to verify the length of the Strix because I think this might be the best factory OC one out of the box. It would be silly to buy a new card and I can't fit it inside my case because the length exceeds 11.8 which is my cases max without removing HDD cages.

be sure and check the dimensions at the manufacturer website as I've seen some of the stores list the wrong sizes.

Yeah these cards aren't small anymore lol good luck getting the one you like, hopefully it fits your case.

It is done. I got a nice $15 promo code so that was an immediate no brainer to my purchase decision. Saving money is good.

I picked up a Gigabyte G1 Gaming. Manufacturer website says it's length is 11.02 which fits into my case and gives me almost a inch of clearance to work with.

OC Clock is also 1822Mhz

Man this is going to be so good.

Almost 200% performance increase. I cannot wait!

I went for the Asus oc dual fan card off amazon for 429. I finally broke down and bought it, should be here soon. I am going from a 660ti this this, anyone recommend some games I need to go check out again that I have missed? Is Ryse still considered amazing looking? Doom? I really got the card for FH3 and gears of war, but need some other PC titles to keep me going.

Same card I got, you'll love it. I have nothing but good things to say about it.

Ah crap. Looked promising, but anything setup with that program applied creates terrible overscan in the new "native" resolution as well as the "custom" resolution (that is my HDTV's native display). I can't find any settings on my HDTV to fix it and using the scale in nvidia control panel actually reduces the resolution. If I can figure that out, I might just be in business.

Same card I got a few days ago. It is the same size as my Gigabyte GTX 670 OC. GPU performance more than tripled.

TBH, it is a bit wasted on my display and that I don't own a single game that would really take advantage of its power. Makes me wish I bought Ryse during the steam summer sale...

The only newest games I have to throw at my new 1070 GTX coming in the mail that gave my HD7950 a bit of trouble is The Witcher 3 and Fallout 4.

I also have Skyrim Remaster the Bioshock Collection as well coming since owning the originals I get the upgrades for free.

I'm coming from a GPU that released back in 2012. The MSI Radeon HD7950 Twin Frozr III.

Considering my compulsiveness to buy PC games through Steam Sales and not play them, I have built up quite a list I can now simply throw at my card.

Mindng my i5 3570k isn't too much of a bottleneck I expect to have high performance on any non-CPU bound game in the immediate future due to the GPU upgrade.

Even certain older games like Borderlands 2, Grid Autosport, Dragon Age: Inquisition, and Divinity: Original Sin SE which made my HD7950 sound it was going to take off a runway inside my PC case, should run with the greatest of ease and much quieter...I hope.

Your games will fly.

I made the same jump from a gigabyte 7950 to a MSI gaming x (worried a little cause I have micron memory) and my i5 2500k has only struggled with total war warhammer. It's been a real surprise for me as I was expecting my old CPU to hold me back more but I guess not a whole lot of progress had been made with more recent CPUs.

This is my setup. I was playing Fallout 4 last night. On the whole, it is just dreamy. I had one encounter where it was a bit jerky but I will put that down to the engine more than anything else. That i5 holds its own just fine mainly but you can't take into account janky engines!

I thought I'd give my 1070 a work out, so I tried Just Cause 3 and Witcher 3 as my first games. Both games max settings (hairworks off on Witcher 3) at 1440p - DSR (I use a 40" 1080p TV) and I'm getting a very consistent 60fps with only very small dips on the odd occasion.

Couldn't tell what the max framerate was, as DSR capped the framerate to 60fps for whatever reason. First time I've tried DSR, so not sure if that's normal or if there is a way to uncap it but either way I'm happy with the result, games felt very smooth to play.

Will probably try 1080p later, to see what the max framerate I get but the GTX 1070 seems to be great for 1440p.

Oh crap I totally forgot I also owned Just Cause 3. I tried to erase that game from my memory due to it's performance issues.

Maybe I can brute force it with my new GTX 1070. This should be interesting.

Hmm yeah I guess, thanks for all your help! :) I would be happy if I could just add 4k manually but oh well, can't have everything :P

I wonder what I could get for my GTX 460s these days... lol Like my previous three GPUs they're in their boxes, stored in a larger box. Not a fate I want my 970 to share, hopefully I actually sell it before it's completely irrelevant if I upgrade.

Just got my KFA2 1070 today. I'm really surprised how quiet it is for a blower card, to the point that I haven't yet bothered to replace the cooler with my Accelero. It does look like there's a warranty void if removed sticker probably blocking one of the screws, so I'm debating whether it would even be worth it. The card does get to around 80c with automatic fan settings and I get around 2 Ghz clocks without further tinkering. I think I need to switch to a BIOS with a higher power limit if I want higher clocks. I just don't think the extra 100 or so Mhz is going to end up being worth the hassle.

Did a few comparisons to my old MSI 970 running at 1500 Mhz too. My 2500K is running at 4.4 GHz now and it's starting to finally be a bottleneck in games like GTAV, W3 and FO4. I have a 4K screen so it's not too much of a problem yet, I'm still GPU bound at 60 FPS anyways. I can run games at 1440p maxed out 60 FPS or 4K with lowered settings at 40-60 FPS, or in some case a custom 3200x1800 or 3840x1607 res at 60 FPS.

How insignificant would the bottleneck be when paired with a 2500K at 4.3GHz? Fairily small? Gonna be using it at 1080p + AA.

You're fine. You could stand to upgrade within two years or so, and see some improvement in frame pacing.

Was gonna upgrade my processor as well.
But damnit faster ram and a 4.5+ Overclock and i think ill be good for atleast the next year and a bit.

2500K still holding strong.

Anyone know the best way to get a 1070? Having trouble finding one in stock anywhere, despite being subbed to a bunch of manufacturer's sites...

F5 lottery is your best bet honestly.
You could sit and F5 this site till you get lucky with what you are looking for.

Im seeing alot of green so a bunch of 1070s are in stock.

It is a solid config. Obviously it is always better to build yourself, but if you like to look of that case, it offers a good mix of parts.

2 things tho.
1 - Most of the time, the power supply is cheap in these config. Meaning it could be a problem for future upgrades.
2 - 8 gig memory is fast becoming low. Also, it is basic DDR4 memory. No overclock there.

Basically, this is not a very overclock friendly setup. All parts will be running at basic speed. If overclock is something that you don't consider, than great. If you like to overclock, look to build your own.

It should be correct, mine's overclocked so it's higher. I meant your score is just a bit lower than similar system like yours, you can click show result details and it'll show that.

Alright, thanks.
Everything should be working correctly if I ever need some more power guess I could look into overclocking too but currently doesn't look like I should have any problems running games at 1440p/60fps.

Just got a Gigabyte G1 1070 it has slight coil whine when GPU load is starting to hit 80% and higher. Will see if it gets less when it's used a bit more, if not I'll see if I can get it RMA'ed.

I'll be getting my G1 Gaming 1070 GTX either tomorrow or Thursday, depending if Fedex gets to my location sooner and opts to deliver it in the 3 business day shipping I paid for or miss the mark by one day (Why is this a thing?, that's why I paid for shipping in the first place)

In any case. I want to affirm what I need to download in advance before the card arrives so I don't need to go driver or software hunting so I can just put the card into my machine and install everything right away.

I guess Display Driver Uninstaller is the first thing to get to remove any traces of the AMD / Radeon drivers on my system and any of it's software.

What is the difference between GeForce Experience and getting the Driver Package directly from Nvidia's website. Also is it worthwhile to get the Gigabyte software to for it's OC Mode toggle? The last time I owned a GeForce GPU was a 9800 GT which didn't have a specialized software and simply was just drivers. I'm guessing the GeForce Experience is like the equivalent to AMD's Radeon Software.

My entire system runs all on air and I don't use liquid cooling.

This is my cooling configuration.

Two 120mm front intake, One 140mm top fan, 120mm rear, and 120mm side and bottom.

On my configuration I don't want to have problems running my new G1 Gaming 1070 GTX on it's OC mode.

I'm already going from a 200w TDP GPU (HD 7950), to a 150w TDP so I know the newer card will be more energy efficient, but is that going to be enough if I want to run the card on it's highest factory OC preset advertised?

I just don't want to run into any issues later on. Once I get more money I plan to replace my Ivy Bridge mobo and CPU for a either a newer Skylake or Kaby Lake setup, but that won't happen until at least Black Friday thereabouts. A solid 3 months away.

Can you check in CPUZ if you got Samsung or Micron RAM ?
You can identify by looking at the bios number.
Thanks. I've decided to live with the coil whine myself. I can't really hear it with good headphones. However I'm hoping gigabyte issues a bios upgrade. Their current bioses are in beta status so I'm not risking an upgrade at the moment.

I've done the exact same upgrade.
I didn't use DDU and had to reset windows.
Since I'm on Windows 10 anniversary edition, it came with the 369 driver. Didn't install any software from gigabyte as I don't thrust their software engineers.

The card comes factory overclocked. Meaning, the minimum speed at load is higher. The speed at boost is around 4000mhz which is basically the same as reference cards. It just throttle less due to better cooling.

Their is a new windows 10 anniversary version available. I'll test it out tonight and report back.

Edit : as for how cool it runs, it do run very cool. Certainly cooler than 7950 1ghz edition I had before.

I've got micron memory.

Sorry about that. There are reports of issues with Micron. 100% rate return in China. But I'm not sure yet if I believe that. Currently, I'm trying to keep the card within RMA time limit and see if it gets better with bios/drivers update.
I just wish I had got the first batch with Samsung memory.

Search for Reddit in this thread for more information on the Micron fiasco with Pascal 1070/1080.

I think the Micron memory thing is tied to MSI's GPUs only, but I could be wrong.

Installed newest drivers. Didn't get any issues yet.
I don't have time to thoroughly test them out.
They seem solid from the hour I played WoW on them.
