Well if you want to spend $400+ the 1070 is pretty good. Anything less I'd probably go for that new AMD card that looks amazing for the 200-250 range.

I would be fine with $400-$500 if it means I don't have to buy another card in 2 years. Been going with $200 cards and would rather just buy something a bit less then the best on the market so I can ride out the console generation (or at least what goes for one these days) at 1080/60.

Check newegg.com, $600 + $40 freight for a founders edition. Still pricey but sure beats $780. Personally I'll hold out until I can get something at the non-founders RRP (or at least something with a superior cooler and binning for that price).

I had already thought that Palit/Gainward (they are the same) seem like good choices this time around on both the 1080 and the 1070. Massive cooler, solid PCB, good out of the box clocks, and best of all not price gouging on the MSRP compared to the more well known brands like Asus, MSI and even Gigabyte to some extent.

Oh, and they actually have a default memory OC, which is nice.

Well, they have to be, otherwise they couldn't get rid of the remaining stock.
A 1070 is roughly the same in DX11 games, faster in DX12 and VR, has 2 GB more memory, and consumes ~100W less.

I'm starting to wonder whether I wouldn't be better off getting a 480. It should be maximum $500 (probably closer to $450) whereas 1070s are sold at around $900. $400 is a ton of money (could get some Sennheiser HD600 that I've been eyeing for a while with that...), but I don't know if the 480 will be enough for 1440p 60fps gaming without taking down too many settings...

Need to wait for benchmarks, but a lot of early suggestions say its the equivalent of a GTX970~980 so I'm going to say close but not quite. Ok for like 80-90% of titles at medium/high settings if you don't mind turning stuff down. I've also got a 1440p monitor and upgrading from a 970 to 1070 because there's going to be 70% performance improvement.

However the 480 is sensational value. If I was building a PC the first time and there was no VR, I'd definitely get a 1080p screen and a 480. A 1080p/Freesync monitor would be around $400 plus $230 for a 8gb 480 vs a 1440p/G-sync/1070 combo - $700 plus $420.... i think i would just save the money and go the cheaper option. I mean even if I got the GTX 1080, it still wouldn't max out my 1440p/144hz monitor.

I'm starting to seriously consider the Palit Gamerock Premium, there's a shipment coming in on the 24th and they cost less than the Twin Frozr model. However, I'm wondering what the difference between it and the Palit Jetstream is; according to this article, Jetstream is "for OCers", but I'm really not sure what that even means in this context with the GR premium's monster base clocks.

If it's close to a 970 it probably won't be worth it since I sold mine two weeks ago because it wasn't powerful enough for 1440p. I just wasn't expecting the 1070 to be that expensive. It's close to NZD400 more expensive than what I bought my 970 for 6 months ago...

When people say to buy the 1070/1080 for VR, what does that mean? Do these cards have specific technical specs that make them much better than previous GPUs for VR? Or is it merely the fact that since they are the best cards on the market now, they are also the best cards for VR applications which are very demanding on the GPU?

Take VR as an example. You already need one projection for each eye. Today, games simply render to the two screens separately, incurring all of the aforementioned inefficiencies. But because SMP supports a pair of projection centers, they can both be rendered in one pass using a feature Nvidia calls Single Pass Stereo. Vertex processing happens once, and SMP kicks back two positions for each vertex corresponding to your left and right eyes. From there, SMP can apply additional projections to enable a feature referred to as Lens Matched Shading.

When you combine Single Pass Stereo and Lens Matched Shading, Nvidia claims it’s possible to see a 2x performance improvement in VR compared to a GPU without SMP support. Some of this comes from gains related to pixel throughput—using Lens Matched Shading to avoid working on pixels that don’t need to be rendered, Nvidia’s conservative preset knocks a 4.2 MPix/s (Oculus Rift) workload down to 2.8 MPix/s, freeing up 1.5x of the GPU’s shading horsepower. Then, by processing geometry once and shifting it in hardware (rather than re-doing everything for your second eye), Single Pass Stereo effectively alleviates half of the geometry work being done today. For those of you who were awestruck by Jen-Hsun’s slide showing “2x Perf and 3x Efficiency Vs. Titan X” during the 1080 livestream, now you know what went into that math.

Basically the architecture will allow it to be twice as fast for VR once games are programmed around it. It makes 1070s or 1080s the card to buy for VR.

Yep some of the prices actually go up and/or increase today. The Gigabyte G1 I ordered from them like 3 days ago went up to 576 for some reason. On the plus side, the MSI Aero is up for 579 now as well. But yeah, in any case, holy shit these prices are crazy.
