Nvidia Geforce GTX 1070 Review Thread

I run duplicated 1080 60Hz displays on my 1070, a monitor on DVI and a TV on HDMI through a receiver.

I was playing Undertale (gotta test out this baby's power!) and I notice I get a juttery 29fps when duplicated, but a smooth 30fps when sending to only one or the other display.

Really glad I went with the G1 and didn't wait on the ASUS Strix. $470 lol, no thanks. What a joke this whole "Founder's Edition" fiasco has been. Nvidia got everybody excited about the 1070 with their announced $380 price tag and then the cards cost almost 100 bucks more. Pathetic.

This is because the refresh rates of your monitor and tv are not an exact match. I had this issue before. TV was always smooth but monitor wasn't. I believe my monitor was running at a slightly higher refresh rate. GPU would only process the lowest frequency between the two devices, since obviously it couldn't send a higher signal to something that doesn't support it.

Glad I got in for the $399 Gigabyte 2X Windforce from Newegg. That's how much I would've paid after tax anyway from $379 at a local store.

It's been going in and out of stock, with favorable reviews so far. I get mine this Thursday, so I'm excited to upgrade from a 770 4GB.

That physics score looks correct. Not sure what you were expecting.

What's your memory clock? You're getting 400+ more points than I do, yet your core seems to match mine (well, my current degraded core...).

That is underclocked. You should be running at 8000MHz effective and that should be showing ~4000MHz.

Yeah, that's underclocked. Should be running 8000mhz.

NVIDIA’s reference GTX 970 is spec’d at 1,050/1178MHz Core and 7,000MHz Memory. I'll push up my memory to +500 then if it can easily go up to that, I've just never needed to. My games run great.

So, thoughts on the Gigabyte G1 1070:

- Coil whine is very apparent during Furmark. Loudest I've had from any card so far. Haven't noticed it in gameplay, but I wouldn't be surprised to have it pop up during certain games.

- Cooling is decent, but even with good case airflow, it's not great for low dB gaming. 40% fan speed is about the limit for it to stay inaudible under my 800RPM case fans, and it'll climb up to 80C during intense gaming, so I usually let the fan climb up to 50-60%, which is definitely audible. If I were going for super low dB (e.g. 400RPM case fans), this card would be awful.

- Overclocks are soso. 2025/8800 is the stable overclock I've settled with so far (+100/+400). Not bad, but not great. Could be luck of the draw...or could be subpar BIOS and components. Overclocks don't get all that much faster though, besides the super lucky people hitting 9400MHz+ on their memory.

It's still about the cheapest and most decent card out there, though. I got it at $550 CAD while the Asus Strix was $600 CAD. The Asus would certainly be a lot quieter with it's 5 heatpipes versus the Gigabyte's 2, but it was hard to justify the cost.

If low dB gaming is important to you, I'd look for something better than the Gigabyte, like the Asus Strix, MSI Gaming X, or Zotac AMP Extreme. As far as the cheaper cards go however, the Gaming X is pretty solid. I

So I've ordered the G1 1070 from Umart for $769 however I just received an email that they wont be in stock for a good week or so. Out of the ones available in the picture below, which one is worth the few extra dollars to get it today?

what is up with the gtx 1070 drivers? i currently have 368.39 and my computer has been randomly crashing. i even formatted everything and did a clean install, for some reason this video card has been giving me problems since i got it. EVGA GTX 1070 superclocked :(

Guess you were unlucky with the coil whine. I have the same card and have had zero issues so far in around 2 weeks of solid gaming. Though I do agree it's not the quietest with regards to fan noise, I have my headset on so It's not a concern to me, I've been very impressed with it.

Maybe exchange it?

Quick edit: I've used Heaven, Kombuster and 3d mark bench's and not heard any coil whine either.

Been saving up for a 1070 literally for months, finally decided to bite yesterday when I saw my local MicroCenter had some MSI variants in stock for $399. It's the Aero 8G OC which means it has the mediocre blower cooler, but having put it through some paces, I don't notice much noise from it so I'm happy enough.

I went from a 760 to this and I'm completely amazed at what it can do with The Witcher 3. Solid 60fps at 1080p on max settings all day. I also threw a heavily modded Skyrim install at it that used to run 20-25fps on my 760 and again, solid 60 (frame limited).

Can't wait to give Doom a try next. And then Deus Ex later this summer!

Agreed. Cranking everything up in Witcher 3 brings a tear to me eye. So beautiful.

i went ahead and used DDU to get rid of the nvidia driver and now the computer is no longer freezing. could it be the audio driver on the card is clashing with my soundblaster z drivers? my current specs are
I7 3770k
32gb ram
soundblaster Z
EVGA GTX 1070 Superclocked
Win 10 Pro 64bit

how long does nvidia take to release updates this is very annoying. :(

The problem is that there are multiple programs fighting for control over your computer and each one of them is designed to one up the other. The best thing to do is isolate each piece of hardware and software, and then totally disconnect from the internet. That way you'll be able to work and identify the solutions in peace.

I'm from Canada and the cheapest available is around that price, it's ridiculous even after factoring the exchange rate.

I know, but this is the US NCIX store, so why are they charging the CAD price....

All the other 1070's on the site are normal MSRP's except for the only non-founders card they have up.

I got a founders edition 1070 on the way. Is noise really that much of a concern? I have an ac going in my room all the time so i dont even know if it will be a problem. How bad is it really?

I had a Founder's 1070 for a while (returned it since I realized my 970 was enough for now) and I couldn't notice the sound of it over the AC in my room. You'll be fine.

I'm on a 2GB 770, please let us know what your results are, also what CPU are you on?

I upgraded from a 770 to a 1070 as well, at a minimum I'm seeing double the performance. In VRAM limited situations, I've seen up as much as a 6x increase in performance (Firestrike Ultra). Doom using 5GB of VRAM and idaf now.

Thanks for your input, MS store has 10% off for student pricing so I just ordered an Asus 1070 FE for $405 (before taxes, obviously). Was kinda holding out for availability of a cheaper blower model like the MSI Aero, but the 10% off makes the FE tax not sting as much. Want a blower cuz I've got an HP prebuilt desktop so space is limited and there are no casefans for airflow anyways. Goodbye 960 with your 2GB of vram.

Between the MSI Gaming X and the Gigabyte FE, def the Gaming X - better cooler.

Hmmm.. I'm thinking soon maybe? I just rechecked EVGA's page for the 1070 FTWs and they have a price and specs on it now when before they just had "TBD" on there.

Hopefully soon. I've been putting off getting back into the DLC for The Witcher until I can get either a 1070 or 1080.

Me too! I got like 80 hrs into that game last year but didn't best it so I'm gonna start over and run through on a new card and do the dlc. Assuming this stock shortage ever ends.

Question: I'm on the latest Nvidia driver with my GTX 780. When my 1070 arrives, will I simply just have to swap out the cards, or will I need to reinstall the driver?

Always clean reinstall the driver.
I will even reinstall Windows to have everything clean and fresh.

You can just put the card in, and if there are any issues you can still reinstall the driver.

Yo wat? This is weird seeing coming from you. Did they change how drivers install?
Last I know is the installer detects which card you have and then chooses the right driver to install, it's not a universal driver that works with any card.

The driver has been unified since Riva days. You can just change the card and the driver will recognise the new one. In some rare cases that doesn't happen and then you have to deinstall and install it from scratch. But it usually just works.

Obviously you need to have a driver which knows about the new card you're installing.

my newegg status of my 1070 has been stuck in the "packaging" phase for 3 whole days

its supposed to arrive to me by 7-8 business days

what is going on .___.

I've changed cards multiple times, a reinstall is not necessary. Let alone reinstalling Windows lol

I just popped my 1080 in, no change in drivers or anything and everything worked like it should.

How is it that hot/loud? isn't the g1 a 3 fan non reference cooler? is it just bad or what?

@ bolded, what is the asic value of your card (right click the gpu z icon in the gpu z window and it shows the option)?

That was one good thing about maxwell, even my gutter tier gtx 970 (67% asic quality, which according to the tool is bottom 23 percent of all gtx 970s) still does 1500mhz (+200mhz over the out of the box clock) stable

The sections of Fallout 4 that run like crap because of the shadows still run like crap on the 1070. Only difference is I can crank up everything except god rays and do a few ini tweaks without the framerate getting any worse.

How much fps are you getting in those areas? Or just stutter you can't avoid?

Hmmmm, interesting.

I can confirm that i went from a GTX 670 to a GTX 1070 and on reboot the screen res was tiny. I started to panic when i had a popup saying the driver had updated, i restarted and everything was back to normal. I assume the drivers updated some references etc and the second reboot swapped them in or something. So it wasn't seemless but requiring a second restart is not an issue i'm bothered by.

I might try a DDU clean install at a later date or if any issues turn up but for now all "seems" fine.

Do we have any idea when the non founders edition cards will be released? Between the $70 founders edition upcharge and the scalping it looks like it'll be a while before the $379 cards become readily available.

Damn it, and here I was hoping to crank everything at 1440p (including ultra godrays) and hit 60fps.

What cpu and clockspeed do you have?

There are lots of non founders models out now, they just sell out very quickly. So there hasn't been much reason for anyone to release a model at the $379 pricepoint. Closest we've seen so far is a Gigabyte model at $399.

wut

They have been released for a while now. Stock is another question though.

Well, i crank up god rays on my 970. It causes visual artifacts except ultra setting.
Some sections drop the fps quite harsh but it worths. Maybe i am too sensitive about the god rays.

Like 45 in places like Far Harbor (the town) or the Corvega Assembly Plant.

I think putting god rays on ultra is a hit of maybe another few fps. Might try 1440p again through the control panel instead of DSR.
