Nvidia Geforce GTX 1070 Review Thread

Received my Gigabyte Windforce from newegg.ca today. Ordered June 24th, shipped 27th from LA, arrived at Vancouver on 30th, July 1st was a holiday, delivered to Winnipeg today the 4th with Express shipping.

Going from on-board HD 530 to this is pretty awesome. With stock i5 6600k, Overwatch runs at ~120-140 fps at 1080p on high, max 66 degrees. I don't know how to overclock but I'm happy with the results so far!

What monitors are you guys planning on using with this? Seems to be able to max games at 1440p, so I think I'm going to upgrade from my current Asus 1080p IPS. But, I'm not really sure what I want to go with. Max at 60fps is a must. But past that? I'm not sure.

G-sync sounds nice, and I've only ever had an IPS so I'm not sure what the other monitor types could give me. Then I have to wonder if I should get a 1080 16:9 monitor instead because those also look pretty sweet...

HELP

Is the Palit Gamerock 1070 not available in the US? That's the card I really wanted to get when I could but seems it's only sold in Europe for some reason :(, seems to be one of the top best 1070 cards, lowest noise with top performance ratio.

Oh and yes my CPU is still at stock speed (3.5GHz). I still haven't clear evidence telling me overclocking will significantly boost my performance in anything but ArmA.

Other than every benchmark ever? Of course overclocking will boost performance if you are not GPU bound.

So I just bought and have been playing around with an Acer G257HU this weekend. 25" 1440p 60 Hz IPS and has speakers:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...9728&cm_re=acer_g257hu-_-24-009-728-_-Product

As far as I can tell, this is the best value 1440p IPS monitor available. Now that I've had a bit of time to try it out, I'd say that it's gorgeous with great colour and brightness. No dead pixels. The speakers are tinny, however, but I wasn't really expecting those to be that good anyway.

I considered high refresh rate but, since the 1070 can't consistently render detailed games over 100 fps, I thought that I'd need G-Sync. IPS + high refresh is already really expensive, and G-Sync puts it way over the top. I figure that this much cheaper monitor will tied me over for the next 3+ years when G-Sync and high refresh IPS come down in price AND when a cheaper single video card might be able to render contemporary demanding games at 100+ fps.

Look for Gainward cards, they are basically the same as Gainward is a Palit brand now. I believe they are using it in the Americas.

In Fallout 4 with my GTX 960 I was happily running along at a fixed 33 fps @ 1440p with my customized settings. This is on a gsync monitor and I'm playing with an Xbone controller so the console-level framerate is fine for me. I came across certain areas that dropped my framerate to sub-30. Afterburner overlay showed that my gpu utilization was not maxed out, so I figured it was a cpu bottleneck. I increased my 5820k cpu from 3.8 to 4ghz and my framerate went up a bit and my gpu utilization went back up to 99-100% in that section. So I guess in games with shitty engines or optimization you can run into cpu bottlenecks. Wish games could automatically take advantage of a hexacore cpu.

When you see the framerate drop down and see that gpu utilization is low, it usually means the cpu is holding things up.

Do we have any idea when the non founders edition cards will be released? Between the $70 founders edition upcharge and the scalping it looks like it'll be a while before the $379 cards become readily available.

Im on the same boat.
Looks like we will be waiting for a while, since these cards are selling like hotcakes.

I mean released at MSRP.

Though yeah, it looks like the prices are now starting to come down looking at what newegg has at the moment.

I would just get the $400 Gigabyte one. It's only $20 more and the ones that are sold at MSRP will probably all be crappy blowers anyway.

The sections of Fallout 4 that run like crap because of the shadows still run like crap on the 1070. Only difference is I can crank up everything except god rays and do a few ini tweaks without the framerate getting any worse.

Because the shadows are heavily cpu bottlenecked

you could have SLI volta 1280tis in 2018 and it would still run like shit

You can overclock the crap out of your cpu to improve it but since the performance is so bad due to the shadows even a big overclock (30 percent or so) still isn't enough to make the performance acceptable, just 30 percent more slightly less shit

We'll either have to wait for some distant future cpus with several times better IPC to play fallout 4 smoothly, or simply give accept that that turd of a game will never run right:p

I set my Gaming X to +100/+400 in afterburner and I think I've seen a few screen flashes during ark.

Maybe it's the game or recently changing from fullscreen to borderless window mode.

I'm on +75% power and 120% voltage if I remember correctly.

You got power and voltage mixed up there... right? Either way, I'd try backing off in the memory overclock a little and seeing if that fixes it.

Wonder how far I can push this zotac card. Hit 2k with ease and it stays cool. Pretty happy with this setting so I may not push it any more.

I’ve gotten my MSI Gaming X to 2113mhz core so far, it stays very cool under load and seems to be stable after around 14 hours of gaming over the weekend.

It’s been my first time overclocking a GPU (though been a PC gamer for years). I just followed a few guides online and set a custom fan profile. Not sure if this is a typical clock for the 1070 but pretty happy so far!

Sounds pretty good. What are your memory clocks?

That's the thing though, I don't think I've seen CPU benchmarks that display this information. Most of the ones I've seen (controlled for GPU) just have everything above a 3.5GHz i5 running at 60. I don't think I've seen any displaying improvements from overclocking.

I may have to check that again, but I'm not sure I've ever really seen my CPU get to 100% utilization. With Fallout 4 for instance it may have been at like 60% or something. Throughout the whole game though on the 1070, GPU utilization has been stuck at 4%, at least according to Afterburner.

I looked at aftermarket coolers for a while but never really decided on one, and I haven't had to deal with thermal paste before.

i can only overclock my msi gtx 1070 gaming x to +90/+120 in afterburner. this is with full power limit of 126. i think the clocks are 2038/4120. i guess if i want to overclock anymore i need to start increasing voltage but i've read that the card will ignore it or something?

I'm +450 on the memory overclock currently with no issues. I forced my fan to 100% to test noise levels and it remains really quite though I'm coming from an old GTX 770 that sounded like a jet engine.

What number in mhz does that memory overclock correspond to?

I'm not sure how high to push my 1070, even ballpark tbh.

+120 GPU / +450 MEM on my EVGA 1070 SC was about as far as I could go without any flickering and that was like 3% increase in benches over just setting power to 112%. Seems like the auto-boost already works really well.

I'm no hardcore OCer though.

My new build is featuring that exact CPU (First time with a 6-core processor) for streaming and video editing, but from reviews that I have watched, 6-cores always drop a few frames compared to Quad-Cores since (As you have mentioned) they aren't fully utilized yet. I can't wait for 6-cores to go down more in price so that more people invest in them, while more developers make use of those extra cores.

The MSI lol

Are there any cards that fit the prodigy?

Best way to tell would be to just grab a tape measure and measure the width of your case then go off the width of the MSI specs. My case isn't that large and it fits the MSI in there comfortably.

MSI states 8100mhz memory clock stock, so say around 8550 I'm sitting at. I remember reading an article where they got it up to 9000mhz + without issue.

how are you all getting such high memory overclocks? i'm only at +120 and even going to +125 causes crashes during firestrike. i can understand if it was maybe only an extra 50-100 but +400 is quite significant difference. do you have the voltage increased? for what it's worth i can get higher overclocks while running Heaven. is my card just not a great overclocker or is it an issue with firestrike?

Anyone got experience with the Inno3D GeForce GTX 1070 TWIN X2? Good brand? Looking at one now where the price is pretty decent and directly available so...

Edit: Well, ordered it... You served me well 670 GTX

The retailer I ordered my EVGA 1070 SC just updated that they are expecting a batch to arrive on the 21st.

Looong wait, but the jump from HD5870 is going to be amazing.

It seems my Gigabyte Windforce is in limbo with Purolator. I'm in Toronto, and the last update was departing sort facility in Vancouver on the 30th of June.

Got a nowinstock alert that the EVGA 1070 SC was up on Amazon. I already had an order for the Gigabyte G1 1070 that was set to arrive Thursday, but I've always owned EVGA cards and the SC is the one I've really wanted but it was never in stock.

I took a leap of faith and cancelled my G1 order, and placed an order for the SC. I got in JUST before it sold out again. I would have been pretty bummed if I had cancelled the G1 and not gotten an order in time for the SC.

Pretty pumped. I've never had an issue with an EVGA, love their products. Wooooo!

I have, one of my 4GB GTX 670s died 3.5 years after use so I'll be worried about when I get another product from them. Thank god my current 4GB 670 still works, once I get a new gpu I'll retire it.

Same here. Mine also apparently left Vancouver on the 30th. May our cards find their way home :'(

Just threw down on a Zotac AMP Extreme 1070 from BH Photo and Video. They might still be in stock.

I'm moving somewhat sideways from a 980 ti, but the difference in heat production is a big deal for me. Plus, my PC is connected to my HDTV so going beyond 1080p makes no difference to me just based on the distance I sit from my TV.

Already managed to recoup $400 reselling my 980ti, so this feels pretty good.

Was it the back, airflow blocked card in an SLI setup for 3.5 years? If so maybe it just got too hot too many times?

I love EVGA. Any time I've spoken with their customer service it has been pleasant, and I just have a certain peace of mind buying from them based on how most people regard them. I also usually like their card designs, more understated.

Another thing for my was the fact that the gigabyte G1 is 11.3 inches long. My case should have 12 inches of clearance, but it would be a tight fit and would surely block my access to the sata ports on my mobo. The evga at 10.5 inches is similar to the 970 I had which fit with decent room to spare.

I'll update in this thread if I see any changes to the tracking info. I get that this past weekend was a holiday weekend, but surely there should have been some movement yesterday and even today by now. Purolator's website has a notice stating they're experiencing a significant increase in shipment volumes right now due to Canada Post, so perhaps that's what's slowing our precious 1070's travels down.
