Nvidia Geforce GTX 1070 Review Thread

So I ended up grabbing the MSI 1070 Armor, was actually $40 cheaper than Gaming X or G1 and better in base clock. I'm loving this card, its a massive upgrade from my 4GB 770 and oh god do the games look beautiful. Finally I can put them to ultra and not have performance tank, Witcher 3 here I come!

That's the card i have and it's been a trooper since i got it. I still have a soft-spot in my heart for my old trusty GTX 670 2GB but this is a big upgrade and it fits in my case, yay! The only downside is i now have to upgrade my mobo, cpu & memory next but that can wait a few weeks.

I can't buy a piece of hardware and base it on it should be enough in this case. 20fps is a lot, esp if I look forward. The price hurts though...

Buy what you can afford. The 1070 after international shipping and tax is almost $500 for me and I'm happy to leave out 20fps especially if it's over 100fps in what I play.

You know you can turn a couple of things down to increase the fps should you not be happy with the performance.

Either way in 2 generations time, the gap will be big enough to warrant another upgrade regardless of whether you are on 1070 or 1080.

These prices are so all over the board it's not even funny. You have some retailers charging $459 for the gaming X and others at $479 to $499. I wish these prices would stabilize already.

Okay now I'm just annoyed. Why in the goddamn hell has my 1070 Windforce that I ordered from Newegg Canada not moved since June 30? Apparently it's just sitting in Vancouver, and I'm in Toronto without any 1070 goodness.

Is there a point in installing a GTX 1070 into a system with an AMD FX 8300 CPU? I can't afford a CPU upgrade on top of a GPU upgrade any time soon.

So I'm debating wether to get a MSI aero OC on Amazon.co if it gets in stock or buy a Gigabyte Windforce on komplett.se if it also gets in stock.

So what is your take Gaf? Are blowers bad or should I just pay a bit more and get a OC card with more fans? My PC case isn't really that well ventilated I think

Edit: or rather which card should I avoid other than the Founders Edition?

Eventually some cards should come out at the actual MSRP of $380, but I really couldn't imagine when. I would guess that the higher end non-reference cards will stay around $420-450, because those will always cost more than MSRP. Those $500+ prices are just scalpers.

I'm suddenly swinging around to the idea of a reference/blower edition. It'd probably suit my case a hell of a lot more. $450 currently but the import is a killer $100 on top of that. Really going to have to think about this. Signs are pointing at the 1060 coming in around the 980 mark in terms of performance and that could do me quite nicely.

Blower = more noise but better heat removal generally. Open coolers with 2+ fans means less noise but more heat build up inside the case.

I personally wouldn't go with a blower cooler unless I'd want to build a SLI system where the cards would be close to each other. An open cooler with 2 or 3 fans is a better option even on stock clocks - it will be silent under load and will allow more OC headroom because of better cooling. But you have to make sure that you have at least one case exhaust fan or it may not be very efficient.

Ordered a gigabyte g1. Finally going to retire my 670s. Excited to try out some 4k gaming on my TV and some high quality 1440p gaming on my monitor. Hopefully prices go down by the holidays so I can get a second one.

What about my case above? The SG07 case has the fans right up against the edge of the case and there is only one fan taking heat out of the box otherwise - a huge one on the top above where the CPU is.

Possibly a situ where reference is better and would probably be lower in noise due to staying cooler better?

Got lucky and an evga super locked acx 3.0 went on Amazon for 429. Nabbed it and cancelled my other order of a fe for 500.

Been playing the "I ordered it but it sold out right when I ordered it so its on back order sorry" game for awhile now. Cancelled lots of orders from diff places and finally have a card on the way. Super excited for tomorrow.

I'll update in this thread if I see any changes to the tracking info. I get that this past weekend was a holiday weekend, but surely there should have been some movement yesterday and even today by now. Purolator's website has a notice stating they're experiencing a significant increase in shipment volumes right now due to Canada Post, so perhaps that's what's slowing our precious 1070's travels down.

Update: my tracking details still haven't updated, but I got in touch with live chat on Purolator's website. I gave my tracking number, and was told that the package is currently in transit and expected to be delivered tomorrow. Not sure why the site isn't saying this, but hopefully she was right! I really want this card for the weekend.

I just panicked a little when I realised I'd bought a new card without checking to see whether it actually fit in my case. I looked up the specs and my case (Antec Three Hundred) can fit a 279mm card, and my card (MSI Gaming X) is...

278.8mm

It's gonna be tight :P

What games cannot be enjoyed in "maxed out 1080p60" with 1070 with a semi-competent CPU [older i5 or fx8350]?
[not counting some specific visual settings that majority of reviewers are ignoring, such as Physx Hair in Witcher 3].

To me it looks like 1070 really is "fire and forget" card for users with 1080p60 monitors.

Good stuff! I can't wait to use it with my new 1440p IPS monitor! My 280X is struggling a bit at that res in the 20-30 fps range. It'll be great to basically double that frame rate!

I did the same thing. Ordered my AMP Extreme last night and didn't realize what a huge card it was. I did the measurements and it looked iffy, so I've pre-emptively modded my case by cutting out a chunk of my hard drive cage.

Goddamn Newegg, an EVGA 1070 was in stock, added to cart, checked out, then get a canceled/voided order email a few minutes later.

Guess I'll have to bitch at their customer service then.

The AMP Extreme is going to be a tight fit in my case too. Hoping I don't have to get out the toolbox but we'll see.

If I play on 1440p, and I want a minimium of 60fps for W3, will I get it with a 1070, or should I go for a 1080?

A 1070 is fine. I play at 1440p and the only place it goes below 60 FPS is in the swamps of Velen or the big market square in Novigrad. In both cases it dips briefly to about 54 FPS, but not much lower. Doubt that I would notice without a benchmark running.

Keep in mind I also have a 2500k - a slightly older CPU - so if you have something more modern I am sure it would remain locked at 60 all the time.

This is at all ultra settings, with hairworks off, by the way.

Anyone have a 1070 paired with a 2500k?

Yes, I have. There is absolutely a bottleneck, but it's acceptable and I still feel that getting a 1070 alone was the best value, as opposed to building a whole new PC for the future. I am at most about 5 - 15% below most of the benchmarks featured in the 1070 reviews. Certain games like Rise of the Tomb Raider or Ryse are a bit more CPU bound, but at the end of the day I can live with a small bottleneck. Just keep in mind that when you see a benchmark, you're going to be a little below that.

My 2500k is clocked to 4.5 GHz by the way, which is pretty trivial to do.

I hope mine will run same. I have overclocked 2500k to 4.5 and I run ultra wide 21:9 though so might be a bit lower FPS.

Other than just preferring a certain company, is there a real tangible difference between the companies that make these? MSI, Zotac, Gigabyte, there's so many.

Amazon has preorders up for an MSI 1080 but I literally have no familiarity with high end cards.

Maybe this isn't the place to ask, but I can't do custom resolutions in the Nvidia control panel because it wants me to turn off "DSR Factors," but I can't figure out how to do that.

I went with the g1. I haven't dealt with gigabyte customer service but it had a three year warranty and a better cooler than the one from MSI that is listed on Amazon. It was 10 dollars more and worth it for me.

Evga has step up and probably the best customer service.

i think it mostly comes down to the design of the cooler and how good it is. i personally would go for either msi, gigabyte, asus, or evga. they seem to be the more popular ones. zotac/palit/gainward not so much.

Well then, I have an MSI GeForce GTX 1080 pre-ordered from Amazon.

Someone talk me out of paying the $100 founders premium. :( Currently on a GTX970 with an XB271HU. Really looking to utilize that 1440 capability.

Edit: Cancelled and ordered a EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 SC GAMING ACX 3.0. These stock fluctuations are maddening!

I just helped my roommate order the rest of the parts to complete his build, with the Zotac 1070 AMP Extreme. The card is tall as hell too. From the rough measurements of the case I got him there will only be about ~5cm from the top of the card (not including the protruding wires from the power) and the glass side panel. Hopefully it works out when I help him build it, haha.

So my desktop right now has an i7-860 with an R9 270, really tempted to pick up this since the RX 480 is having PCI power draw problems. How bottlenecked am I by that CPU? :/

Kinda hard to say really but from the looks of it, yes, a blower style cooler will probably do better in that case. Though depending on how the case fan works and how far the exhaust windows are from the edges of the open cooler, an open cooler may do fine as well here.

So my MSI 1070 Gaming X arrived today. It's a pretty enormous card and barely fit into my mid tower case. The performance is amazing though, it runs anything I throw at it at 1080p 60fps. My next upgrade is gonna be a good full tower case, something I've been holding out on for way too long.

Just ordered the msi gaming x one from newegg. Hope it gets in by next week. Will be nice to have decent performance in VR titles.

Just installed my 1070. I'M HYPE. Is there something specific I should use to benchmark it?

3DMark Firestrike and Unigine Benchmark.

You can compare your numbers to review websites especially in comparison to other 1070 GTX tests as well as the 980 Ti as well.
