Nvidia Geforce GTX 1070 Review Thread

Got my new PSU and 1070 FTW installed, and everything seems to be working... kinda. For some reason Fallout 4 won't detect the card, but seems to play fine otherwise. It also doesn't seem to be working the best in GW2... my FPS is almost identical to my old 670 FTW, even if I'm just standing in the middle of nowhere by myself looking at the ground. CPU holding me back I suppose.

I don't have anything else installed because I had formatted before I installed it, so I'll have to re-download TW3 and test that I guess before I really get worried. But FO4 not even being able to identify it is worrying.

It boost to 2012 straight away, so that's working. Though EVGA Precision X is causing a process called WMI Provider Host to constantly be eating up 5% or more of my CPU. I'll have to look into older versions I guess.

In the nvidia panel instead of adaptive power set it to high performance, some games seem to keep it in a lower clock state. Theres also a Nvidia hotfix driver to reduce latency which might help too.

I've heard problems with almost all brand's using software, I think everything is just still new and doesn't have the kinks quite worked out yet tbh.

I changed it from optimal performance to prefer maximum performance in Nvidia control panel global settings. Is that alright?

Even though it had optimal performance as recommended.

Edit: ran a benchmark testing them both, results were practically the same.

Run 3dmark firedtrike and link us the results here, we can make sure everything looks right.

There was a daily deal at Mindfactory (German store), batch of 40 GPUs and I managed to grab one.

Well you were quite lucky there :D I know Mindfactory too as I'm from Germany aswell, I didn't know they do such deals o.o

My 1070 is on track to arrive tomorrow! :D

Hopefully it'll be worth it!
Mine was just shipped and on track for Friday, can't wait to benchmark it and get into gaming.

Yep mine should be here tomorrow as well.

Looking forward to christening it with some Doom 2016 that I have been saving for the occasion.

I'm sure it will be! :) Your Gainward should be identical to my Palit, I heard they don't have the best thermal and noise levels but I'm sure a custom fan-curve can get this in order.

Well I guess the GTX 1070 owners-club will get even bigger.

I'm getting mine tomorrow too, there must have some sort of subliminal marketing that got people to order at the same time lol.

I think it also has to do with the fact that the 1070s actually seem to be in stock now. If the 1080s were in stock, I might have gotten that instead, lol. I just wanted to be done with my crappy SLI experience. Still can't believe the number of people who are going with SLI 1070s, 1080s, and Titan X after the incredibly lackluster SLI support for the last 1-1.5 years and the new focus on DX12 where I expect SLI support to be even worse (Unreal 4 only supports VR SLI with DX12).

Yeah that's the case for me, I was planning on waiting until the RX 480 was in stock but seeing the 1070 available made me jump on it, when I otherwise would have waited.

So is the 1070 worth it over the 1060 for the price premium? Obviously it is better but not quite what I mean... I've been saving and waiting for a 1060sc because I'm a gamer on a budget (currently have a 560ti). However I was recently gifted some money that would almost pay for the 1060. So the question is do I take a nearly free 1060 or since I kind of already committed to buying it, do I tack the gift money on top and get a 1070 instead?

Personally, I think it's worth it, but that's a personal value judgement.

At 1080p/60hz, the 1060 is no slouch, and a good choice. If you are at 1440p, have a 144hz monitor, or anticipate moving up to 1440p or 144hz monitor in the future, I'd suggest the 1070 though. A lot more headroom there.

It's too bad the prices for the gtx1070 here in Portugal are closer to 500€ than anything else. The cheapest gtx1060 here is almost half that (It's 269€). Would really like it if AMD brought something out that could lower these prices (a rx490 of sorts)

If you have the extra money to get a 1070 it would make sense to get one for future proofing I think, that's one of the reasons I decided to got higher end then mid tier like I did last time.

I asked in the pc thread but apparently people are only interested in high end pcs there.

So, I'll try here.

I'm addicted to Overwatch and my Amd 6870HD just died.

Played on medium 720p and 60 fps.

I know, moving to a 1070 gtx will be a game changer.... But I won't upgrade my rig until December.

Sounds awful to run a 1070 gtx with 4 gb ddr3 and AMD Phenom X6-1090t at 3.6 Ghz, but... How awful is that? Keep in mind, the only game I'm playing is Overwatch, and maybe BF1 in December

Can I play at 1080p without problems? Maybe another 4 gb will help?

I have an AMD FX6100 with 8GB DDR3 and recently got a GTX 1070 and I'm now running the game at maximum settings, 1080p and 150% frame scaling, got constant 60 FPS. I guess you'll be alright since your specs are similar to mine.

1080p using 150% is something that I was not expecting

150% isn't almost 1440p? Sounds great until December

A 1070 does feel a touch overkill in your case at the moment, but when you do eventually upgrade you wouldn't have to replace the gpu for a good long time.

But the question is do you spend 400 bucks now and transfer to your new machine, or get a stop gap to tied you over only until upgrade. You could pick up a 970 relatively cheap used, which would still eat games like Overwatch for breakfast.

It will be heavily bottlenecked by the CPU but if you don't play games at higher than 1080p60fps and plan to upgrade them, it'll do fine. And yeah, get another 4GB of RAM, it helps A LOT.

Well my 1070 arrived and it works like a charm! :D Despite the one report that the Palit Dual variant is loud I can't even hear mine while testing Battlefield 4 and Overwatch so far, it's quite insane in a positive sense o.o It does seem a bit on the hot side with 72°C in Overwatch but me living in an attic-style flat probably doesn't help with that.

I have one issue with it though and I don't know if it's a nVidia thing because my last nVidia card was a FX 5700 Ultra :P Is it normal that only one screen is active until Windows is loaded? I have my monitor and a TV connected:

Monitor: HDMI <---> HDMI
TV: HDMI <---> DVI

The TV is mostly off but it does display the UEFI and Windows Boot Logo though my primary monitor stays with a NO SIGNAL INPUT till Windows is loaded before kicking in. Is there a way to reassign a primary monitor to the card?

Got my 1070 yesterday, and played some GTA V and Dark Souls 3, both games that really showed the age of my old 670 when I went to a 1440p monitor. Very happy with the results so far. It's nice to be able to play games at full resolution.

I don't know if its normal but that's how it is for me currently on GTX 780, only one monitor displays BIOS, I have DVI-DVI and DP-DP ports being used and the DVI shows BIOS only.

What resolution and fps you're playing Overwatch on? Temps seem normal though, if you compare the reference cooler to MSIs 2 fan cooler it seems to be about what you have too, so nothing to worry about. Whats your idle temp?

Hmm I see, I guess I could swap the cables around again, the only reason why I have my monitor on HDMI anyway is because my old 7970 wouldn't do 74hz over DVI for whatever reason o.o

And oh okay then thanks for this. I'm in-line with the temps actually, I always read online that people claim their 1070's are only 60-65°C hot but I guess that's only for the high-end models then, I'm happy :D
My idle-temp is 40°C and I don't even have to set my Define R4 fans to high-performance mode during games anymore, it's crazy o.o

I hope your 1070 arrives soon :D

Finally ordered my 1070 today from Amazon. Got the MSI GTX 1070 Armor for £389, couldn't say no really, with it dropping £30 and is now £10 under the Founder Edition card too.

I got my Gigabyte GTX 1070 G1 Gaming Super Cool Dope Edition today at about noon, loaded up The Witcher 3, set it to max settings at 60fps and about cried. Everything looks so good, I almost can't believe, I didn't realize how much I really needed an upgrade.

I run Forza 6: Apex completely maxed out at 4K downsampling with a 1070 with a consistent 60+ FPS, with a Core i7 6700K and 16GB of VRAM.
Do not know if I am posting this right. I have ordered my son an alienware r5 that will be here next week. I do not no anything about computers. I know he has a 660 GTX. right now The alienware has a i5 6400, 8g, 840 powersupply, and a founders 1070. Do you think it's a big upgrade? Got a good deal on it had some credit. Also should I order him 8 more gigs so he can put it in? Thanks.

It'll be a massive upgrade. Around 3x. And upgrading to 16GB can't hurt hif you can afford it. It's pretty useful these days.

Ruh roh, not like this (again)

E: Ah shit 3 days ago so probably old news sorry

I posted this on the last page and now I'm wondering if the (one time) artifacts and crash in AK are game related or is it the GPU? On OC mode it's a very mild boost of +25 on the core and +50 on memory.
Anyone with Hitman able run it at a stable 60 fps with v-sync enabled at 1080p, mainly Marrakesh?
I need to stop buying awful PC ports

I bit the bullet and ordered a KFA2 1070 Reference Edition from Mindfactory yesterday for 437 euro shipped to prepare for DX: Mankind Divided. I think with taxes that just about adds up close to the mythical 379$ MSRP. I'm planning on replacing the plastic blower with an Accelero Twin Turbo III cooler I have. I think the board should be the same as FE so there shouldn't be any installation issues, and I might update the BIOS too if there's power limits that limit the card too bad.

1080p using 150% is something that I was not expecting

150% isn't almost 1440p? Sounds great until December
Resolution is completely independent of CPU (outside of constructed/edge cases), so it's not surprising. A low-end CPU will limit the framerate you can achieve, but not the resolution you can achieve that framerate at.

I'm finally getting the 1070 through the EVGA step-up program. Hopefully next week if not this week - but this has been since it was available for step-up.

This was my first. Does it normally take this long?

Got my 1070 installed and everything seems OK.

Congratz enjoy it, I love mine! :D

On another note, could someone maybe help me out with Custom Resolutions? It's my first nVidia card since 2005 :P

I found out that DSR and Custom Resolutions aren't possible at the same time, which I thought is no problem but I stumbled over a small roadblock:

I added the following custom entries:

1920x1080@74hz for general usage as my monitor can do 74hz
2560x1440@60hz for 1440p downsampling

Then I tried 3840x2160@60hz for 4k downsampling which just gives me black flickering, if I however enable 4x DSR it works no problem o.o The thing is once I disable DSR I lose access to my 74hz 1080p resolution, could anyone help me correctly setting 4k as a custom resolution?

GeDoSaTo's latest version is also completely out of order and whenever I try to grab older builds from GitHub they don't even start :/

Shame it's not available in 'Murica.

Wait what Palit and Gainward arent available in the states?
Weird....ive been a Gainward fan since the 6800 days ive had Golden Samples or GLHs since, i never even thought they wouldnt hunt the US market considering their cards are some of the fastest(if not the fastest) out of the box.

Just seeing this. Does this affect Newegg models here in NA? Was going for a gaming X model, now I'm not so sure...

Is new egg stocking from Taiwan or China?
If both then its luck of the draw....Newegg probably already on the case and sending back chinese gaming X models.

The defective MSI cards are those made in China with Micron memory. Just check if you have Samsung memory to be safe.

Is the msrp for a 3rd party card really $380 USD?

Does anyone know what it is in Canada? Google just gives me USA.

That was Nvidia blowing smoke up everyone's ass to make people think the card wasn't that much more expensive than 970 launch. Actual retail price is $420 for lowest end models. Most are $430-450 in US dollars.

Man, I want to bite on a GTX 1070 so bad, but I'm wondering if AMD's VEGA line will release before 2017. If it does, AMD's cards could drive down the prices of Nvidia's.

I'll probably keep one of my GTX 670s and use it as a PhysX card. Has anyone had any experience of having a GPU entirely dedicated to PhysX? Is it worth while?

Is that the price the cards are going to stay at for the next few months? Or just the inflated price due to supply/demand?

It's $410 now and the prices keep falling with the initial demand satisfied.

I wasn't aware that there were some defective MSI cards. Checked my memory manufacturer and it's Samsug, I really dodged a bullet here, since getting technical support in my country is a pain in the ass.

On another subject, I'm using a TV/Monitor which is connected to my 1070 via a HDMI cable. When I first booted Windows after installing the new GPU the image looked annoyingly sharp and low quality and had to touch a few color settings in the NVidia control panel (color depth, output depth, format, etc) until it looked fine. Now, there are some games that continue looking with the same low quality sharpness and apparently this happens when a game is fullscreen (not borderless). Is there any way to prevent this? I had the same problem with my previous AMD GPU (R9 270X) and after some research I found out it might be because of interlacing or some option like that, given that I'm using a TV/Monitor. I'd really appreciate any help or leads.
