NX - Will you pay again to upgrade your VC games?

Haven't paid to upgrade my Wii VC games, so likely not.

I wouldn't put it past Nintendo to charge people to upgrade though.

If Nintendo was smart they'd just make the virtual console a Netflix-like subscription service for the entire catalog.

I hate this idea so much too. Fuck subscription based services.

If it was an optional service like PS Plus on the PS3, I wouldn't mind the idea. As long as you could still purchase / gift individual VC software, then a alternate Netflix-like VC service wouldn't be too bad of a strike IMO.

That said, if it was the only way to access VC games (like online multiplayer on PS4's PS Plus), then yeah I'd be pretty upset. Hopefully they wouldn't go down that route.

They make a lot more money from drip feeding releases.

However, they should launch with a decent selection of classics, and releases should be pretty regular.

Unless the NX VC has the same amount of third-party support for the VC that the Wii did, I wouldn't expect regular releases. And if the drip-feeding tactics are the way they get the most money out of the service as you say they do, I'd expect them to put out a lot of space between their re-releases of their classic titles.

Question, guys... is the Wii VC store going to be closing anytime soon? There's alot of Tgfx-16 stuff on there I really want but have been waiting on the off-chance it'll get re-released somewhere else...

I'm fairly confident that NX will make me buy all my VC games again, which is why I never purchased any bar Earthbound.

Still, assuming Nintendo have a good account system I'm ready to go all in on digital with NX.

They could feasibly add gamecube at least. Perhaps even Dreamcast!

I mean, I'd pay like a buck or two, the way they did with U. I really don't want to though.

Nintendo needs to make VC a universal thing. Hell, make a VC PC application and put it on Steam. Let all your VC purchases transfer between systems.

VC is obviously not a huge revenue stream, seeing how slowly they release titles. Therefore it would hold more value as a fan service, one that doesn't require much engineering cost either.

Nope. I still have my Wii and my Wii U. Didn't transfer from Wii to Wii U, won't transfer from Wii U to NX. I'll keep buying consoles and keep the old ones hooked up.

NO. Maybe certain ones that I really care about with the promise I can take them on the go or play them on the big screen at my desire, but even then, probably no.

I honestly think a much better model would be a Netflix-type subscription where you pay a monthly fee to play whatever VC games you like. Whether that is a standalone service or a tier of any potential paid online service ala PS+ I don't care, but it would better than what they've done so far.

I don't think VC will ever be as good as it was on Wii, so no.

I'll just hang onto the og Wii for VC. Have some sweet adapters that let you use actual NES/SNES controllers for it too.

Probably not, since I play most of them on the gamepad and the wii u wouldn't have to occupy a hdmi port

Definitely not. I paid to upgrade all my VC games to Wii U and then barely ended up playing any of them again. I don't dislike the concept, it's just I'm not going back and playing older games as much as I once did.

What is the value proposition though? It's hard to justify paying $10 per month or whatever to play Rygar and Ninja Gaiden. Not to mention you can own literally every title from every pre PS1 era console on a Raspberry Pi for like $40. Obviously that is illegal, but let's not pretend like it isn't a viable option in the eyes of consumers.

no, i'm already not buying the ps2 remaster, and i won't do that for the nintendo games. i'm already convinced that if i'll buy a nx it will by in the final cycle, and a move like that will just reinforce that

If It's only a dollar or so to upgrade like before, then probably. If it means buying them all over again, I may do that for a specific few on the handheld. I'd rebuy Mario rpg,,secret of mana, final fantasy 6, etc, on the handheld.

I haven't bought vc games since the Wii, and I won't until they have a unified account that will allow me to continuously transfer my vc games to each console.

If NX pulls that off then I certainly will buy vc games again.

Why are people so opposed to the notion of a subscription? If you don't want to subscribe you could just not.

Because subscriptions are terrible. Because I don't want to pay $10 a month to boot up Silver Surfer NES every once in awhile. Because I like owning my own games and playing them whenever I want, without a monthly deduction from my bank account.

Assuming the subscription is $10 a month, with a mean value somewhere between NES and SNES VC, I can simply buy 20 VC titles a year without worrying about a recurring cost or not having access to the game itself or to certain features if I let my subscription lapse.

"YOU CAN PLAY THE ENTIRE LIBRARY" sounds impressive but I'm not interested in the vast majority of the content in any digital library, Netflix, PSNow, or this proposed Nintendo VC service.

There's a reason companies prefer the subscription model. They get more out of it than you do.

A man after my own heart.

The complaining about paying to upgrade VC from Wii to Wii U is stupid. Every single game was available for free through the Wii menu. The upgrade was completely optional.

Amen.

If the blur/dark filter was out of the picture I'd consider getting all my VC games again but since that shit will most likely stay then no, I won't pay for yet another "upgrade".

Nope, with the account system Nintendo know what games you have purchased on WiiU and 3DS so the licences should be swapped over, I have only a couple of VC games and I won't be buying them for the NX.

I will not be paying, and I would be disappointed given that I built my Wii U VC library on the comfort of knowing the games were all bound to my Nintendo Network account. It would be no small loss to leave the games on my Wii U regardless, especially if the NX doesn't offer a successor to off-TV. I actually find the GamePad by itself an incredibly convenient and comfortable device for playing old titles, even if it acts like a GBA Ultra that can't stray too far from the console; the remappable buttons, D-pad, screen size, and ease of suspending on the home screen make it so easy to pick up and play my VC games that my Wii U will likely remain on my desk anyway, unless the NX wholly replaces this function.

I've stopped buying digital content on consoles altogether. After diving in whole hog on PS3 and 360, and then watching as very few purchases carried over into the next gen, I won't put myself in that position again. Wii to Wii U was quite a bit better, but still far from ideal. I now will only purchase digital downloads on PC and mobile.

Certainly not, if there aren't easy to port to NX, that would mean they are going to take time porting those one by one yet again and thus, no "free upgrade".
Massive time waste them and us.

For the record, were those Wii U VC games actually darker or was it just in the screenshots?

Donkey kong 64 is unplayable in my house at daytime

Right now im playing Banjo Kazooie
On my wii
Using a n64 emulator
And it looks and plays fantastic
A lot better than nintendo official n64 games on wiiu

Why are people so opposed to the notion of a subscription? If you don't want to subscribe you could just not.

Being able to play the entire library appeals to extremely tiny subset of people, most people just want the handful of games they care about. Why should I pay for all these games I don't want?

Second, I like owning my games, just let me pay once and be able to play it forever, without requiring connecting online. If I feel like replaying a game a year later, I'd rather not have to pay again just to replay a game I already paid for.

Realistically, most people would just pay for one month and play everything they care about, but then every time a new game you want is available you have to pay again for a bunch of other junk you don't care about. It doesn't benefit you from a cost perspective in the long run, unless you want a really small number of games.

I'm more confused as to why people are supportive of the subscription idea. Just because Microsoft and Sony do it? Their subscriptions are awful too.

Probably not. The sheer number of new releases increases every year, and I find my interest in going back and playing the classics decreases every year. VC was THE reason I bought a Wii at launch, but I've pretty much replayed all the NES, SNES, Genesis games that I need to at this point.

Never understood the complaints of charging for vc games on each platform

Don't wanna pay to rebuy Mario on Wiiu ? Keep playing your vc copy on Wii

Did it break?

No one forced you to buy on Wiiu

I didn't pay for upgrades the first time, and I won't do it in the future if it becomes a thing again.

EDIT: I did rebuy SMW, come to think of it, but it was dirt cheap. 30 cents, was it?

If you can't just link those purchases to your mynintendo account for NX, I'm gonna be pissed.

Wii to WiiU was bad enough, but I have a NTSC Wii and PAL WiiU so for me any transfer wouldn't work anyway.

No way. I didn't even pay to get my Wii VC games transferred. I hope they have a system that just allows us to use our games from day one.
