NY Post: Sony considers merging film and gaming divisions

Terrible idea. Sony's film division is so catastrophic they couldn't manage Spider-Man, one of the biggest IPs in the world by themselves.

What a silly rumor. The idea that Sony will want to restructure Sony Pictures has a lot of merit, but to do so by merging with an altogether disparate division is nonsense. The film industry and video games are different enough that it'd make as little sense as merging Pictures with Music. House has done an excellent job in the last few years, but he's busy enough with the gaming division that he probably wouldn't be able to contribute much to Pictures.

So PlayStation division is highly successful being one of their main pillars, so now it's time to drag it down with Sony Pictures?

Brilliant!

Seriously, if true, really sounds like an effort to use as a cover to cook the books because this really sounds like a bad idea.

Creatively, we don't know the full creative implications, but budgeting for large games easily matches big films in some cases, so this may just make financial sense.

Sony would have to pick and choose their big projects more carefully.

$200 million for Death Stranding or $200 million for Underword 6? Tough choices folks.

Sony pictures produces more bombs then the US army.

Do you want more first party closures from playstation because the emoji movie bombed?

I thought you were kidding but OMG!!!! That movies really exists 😂 who is the idiot who gave the green light for this movie!!?

Why is anyone here taking a NY Post article seriously?

They're a tabloid, on par with the National Examiner and such. Wait for better sources.

This will be horrible in the long term, gaming consumers are some of the most fickle ever, they can be worshipping you one day, and then think you're Donald trump the next. Ex. Microsoft and that whole fiasco at the beginning of this gen.

And then with Sony misreading the market and causing them to lose copious amounts of money

“This is nothing but baseless rumor and speculation,” a Sony Corp. spokesperson said Sunday night. “There are no plans to for Andrew House to oversee Sony Pictures.”

Your first hint should have been that this is a New York Post article. They should probably be banned as a source of news.

RIP gaming division, would bleed dry.

Not even 200m PS4s can save stupid ideas like making another Ghostbusters, spending a fortune trying to keep Daniel Craig or reviving random movies just to get a cinematic universe.

They would attach an anchor to one of the few floating ships they have.

Putting SPE up for bidding just before the new set of Spidy movies come out might be the real angle here. It's about as attractive as they can make the division at this point. All for the ultra low cost of $10B(?).

All I could think of when reading that title:

lol

What Sony needs to do is cut out their movie studio like the cancer it is, not allow it to spread to other arms of their company.

With each cost saving initiative Sony makes, it feels like they will be strictly known for JUST PlayStation in the foreseeable future.

Farking hell.

Maybe it'd work if you fire the entire management of Sony Pictures.

I was thinking the other day that Playstation is pretty much the only part of Sony that are top of their field apart from imaging.

who cares what they are known for.
they make bank in the financial sector, they should just keep Playstation and cameras/image sensors.

Because it would be crazy to see the company that was basically Apple before Apple only be involved in a couple core industries. I get it, business is business, it would just be different.

And Jerry, Larry, Julia and co all get their participation fees. It's not like Sony is rolling on dough from those syndication fees off a 20 year old show.

Overall they are doing allright, but not great. Better Call Saul is no Breaking Bad and Blacklist is just okay from a quality and ratings perspective.

Outlander is starting to get big though. Wouldn't be surprised to see it hit critical mass next year.

Only plus I could see from this is that SIE could develop a Q-Bert reboot since the rights are with Columbia pictures.

I remember reading somewhere that the other Sony divisions were laughing at the SCE subsidiary in its infancy thinking it would flop.

Crazy how things have changed.

Wow that is a terrible idea. Film producers have no idea how to handle the long time lines and amount of talent needed to make a game.
1: Its about line item reporting.
2: If anything, as the rumour suggest, the gaming division would have oversight over the other, not the other way around.

I see nothing wrong with this.

If AH does not have oversight then the NY Post and Sony can both come out smelling like an old rose.

No no no, please no. Sony games puts out phenomenal content, and has a clear identity in the gaming industry. Sony Pictures is the exact opposite in the film industry. Their film output is a mess and they seem to have awfully toxic management.

It would be a mistake to mix these two vastly different cultures.

this could be good for SPE but i dont know if it will be good for SIE. that said something needs to be done with SPE, too much fuckery at the top so they should start from there.

Probably a bad idea overall but something does need to happen to Sony pictures, that studio is pretty bad.
Spider-man and James bond are their biggest properties but they might lose bond though as the deal expired and has not been renewed yet. They have had some decent hits but yea they probably need more blockbusters

Somebody has to do something because Sony Pictures has no idea wtf they're doing.

"We're down to 007 and Spiderman at this point. We need hits, surefire successes."

"I got it. A movie about Emojis."

"Brilliant"

"And let's work in a live-action family friendly Barbie movie, and cast one of the filthiest comedians out there in the lead role!"

"You get a raise!"
