NY Times - Next gen OLED bezeless iPhone 8 to be $999

I break my contract and sell my phone for more than the cost of the remaining handset repayments every year.

It would literally cost me money to not upgrade.

Dat based iPhone resell value.

This new phone should be a real generational leap, so for this year I’m going to give it a shot at the higher price. Will be interesting to see what happens next year, other than the already rumored large version of this year’s Pro.
Generational leap in what sense? Because of the bigger screen, the "wireless" charging and the face recognition?

Even if Apple do these things better somehow, they've been around for a while in their competitors devices.

Smartphone tech has stagnated even if it's still impressive. Apple and Samsung marketing will try to convince you otherwise obviously.

Are people still keeping phones for two years?

The only reason I switched recently was because I broke the screen, else I would still be using my old phone.

I think with something like the 8, the tech should be good for at least three years.

Nah, I get a new one every year

So I have a Rose Gold 128gb iPhone 7 plus, I'm wondering when I should sell it if I wanted to upgrade. Does anyone think it would lose value the moment the 8 comes out or do they still retain value?

Has anything changed to the Kafkaesque process by which Android updates trickle down? Also, premium android phones have been marching towards this price point as well, so I don't how that's any different.

Fragmentation for updates still exists for Android, Google just announced the release of Android Oreo (8.0) https://www.android.com/versions/oreo-8-0/ , there's spotty news about when 8.0 will roll out to what Android devices and what U.S. carrier will be rolling out the Oreo update first to their phones.

I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 5 which recently just got upgraded to Nougat (7.0), don't know if the Note 5 will get Oreo or not.

Do the math people: It's only $1.30 a day for two years. Cheap!

It's $1.37, that .07 makes the difference.

No not really, but it's hella expensive, people don't buy laptops every 2 years anyway. Maybe I'll get a new phone once mine literally breaks (iPhone 7+), but until then I ain't paying $1,000 for a new phone.

What are the internal differences looking like they're going to be between the 7s and the 8? I just want that new AR biznis.
I don't want an all glass phone.

Would have been a cool phone if that "bezeless" was really true, unfortunately it's more like 'more screen space at the top and bottom, the sides remain the same!' and 'no TouchID'. No, just no.

this is why instead of holding onto my lovely 6 i ate dirt and just took a 7 plus. the 7 is nice and all but it feels hardly worth the uprgade... that said, i'll be forced to wait a year into the 8's run before i can think of upgrading which at this pricing isn't a bad thing...

No touchID to me doesn't make any sense... like zero. They have them in laptops now so I can't just see them abandoning them like hot garbage.

My guess is you’ll need at least a Plus to even have a chance of being the same, because of the two cameras. Don’t remember if it was rumored if the Plus would have 2GB or 3GB.

If rumors are to be believed, the facial recognition works even better and faster than TouchID. Apparently people are going to be as blown away by it as we were with TouchID on the 5s. And you can believe Apple is aching to get that laser sensor array into MacBooks. Facial recognition makes WAY more sense there as well.

So there is supposed to be a 7s and a full 8. I wonder which one I get to upgrade with the iPhone upgrade program that Apple offers. 😑

So I get that but have you seen the current iteration of facial recognition? It sucks on Microsoft, it sucks on Android, it's now untested by Apple if the rumors are to be true. Just seems like a large gamble they're playing with a perfectly fine ecosystem they've built.

“Current iteration”. I mean c’mon. “Current iteration” fingerprint sensors at the size of a phone sucked before TouchID also. There’s no rumors about it being untested with apple. All of the recent rumors are that it will be faster and more accurate than anything we’ve seen at this level.

That’s not how the program works. You can upgrade to whatever phone you want. The upgrade is what you “lose” by turning the old phone in. Has nothing to do with the price of the new phone.

Like... It's 42 a month for 24 months. Just stop paying for cable TV,nothing good on the news and your home sports team is probably disappointing anyways.

Go to the bar less. I save so much money after I stopped drinking regularly lol.

7s will likely be >$300 cheaper and still have the A11 and such.
Are you saying Apple will introduce the 7S at a lower price than past iPhones? I don't really see it... either way a 7 is going to be cheaper than it, perhaps significantly as stores try to move inventory.

The A10 is already stupid fast, no one will notice a difference with the A11 imo. The battery life may be better due to the 10nm, but that's about it. Someone will say wireless charging, but I don't think that sold-separately dock will be cheap so it's not a good proposition for a price-conscious consumer.

I dunno, seems to me the 7S is not going to be a good value and someone is better off saving money on a discounted 7 or just biting the bullet for an 8. Guess we'll have to wait and see what Apple eventually does, though.

In everyday use there will be cases FaceID just isn't as convenient. Even handling faces at an angle isn't good enough if your face isn't in shot in the first place. Just tilting the phone too far back might be enough to put your face out of shot. Or if it's on a desk to the side, or too far back.

I'm sure it will impress and be better than what we have seen when it works, but this screams compromise for not having TouchID under the screen. Apple Pay in particular will be a mess with this solution, when it was perfectly fine.

We'll see how it turns out, and what exactly is and isn't in there soon enough, but the lack of TouchID has killed my enthusiasm quite a bit for now.

New iPhones start at $650. 8 is going to be $1000. So $350 cheaper.

As for facial rec, it’s already been reported that it works fine for ApplePay (aka at arms length and skewed from your face). I mean I get your concern is based on existing tech.. but you also know Apple isn’t going to take out something that works, replace it with something worse, in a phone that will be the most expensive phone ever released. I mean let’s ise at least a little common sense here.

Honestly I don't think I'll ever get any of the newer phones on launch. Way too expensive and maybe I'm wrong but no carrier subsidizes phones any more in the US? You either pay up-front or pay as you go in installments.

Personally it's gotten to the point where it's just not worth it any more. Especially when everyone in your family wants the latest and greatest. It's just financially irresponsible to me.

I just don't see face unlock as fundamentally better than Touch ID.

3G > LTE was a massive leap
Pin code > Touch ID was a massive leap
Contactless payments was a massive leap

There is really no equivalent jump in functionality to justify upgrading to me. I only want a new phone because my battery sucks and my gps is barely functional on my 6.

I'm going to wait till the actual announcement but this might be the 1st time I get a legacy model.

Can't drink the Apple Koolaid on this one as touchID is damn near perfect imo. If it is better then cool, but I still am holding out hope that the screen area has touchID as well.

radical redesign, OLED, potentially absolute cutting edge face ID if rumours are true, etc... (Etc being A11 and all that).

Seems like quite a leap to me. If Face ID performs like all the rumours say then it will be a generational leap over everything out there. IF it works like rumours say. I'll believe it when I see it personally, but I also think apple wouldn't replace Touch ID with something worse so I'm quasi-confident.

As someone with a basic 6, I can't wait for this.

It will be the first iPhone I get day one. Trying to get a jet black color but I might even settle for a silver.

Currently have a 64GB phone and still have 36GB left. So I'm definitely aiming for the 64GB model which will be the $999 iPhone 8/X.

TouchID is the natural solution to unlocking a device controlled by touch.

I will eat my iPhone if FaceID manages to be as convenient in everyday use.

Not to be nit picky, but I’m assuming you don’t mean “fundamentally” but instead mean “practically”

Fundamentally face rec is better than TouchID. It’s a 3D scan instead of 2D, uses more points of uniqueness than fingerprint, and can do things like auto-lock/unlock, eye tracking, etc. and reports are it’s faster than TouchID as well.

Now practically... I mean we are used to TouchID and it works pretty near flawlessly. “If it ain’t broke...” So yeah..

But IMHO facial rec was always the final goal. TouchID was a stepping stone. And even for that small practical advantage, “doing nothing” to unlock your phone is still a tiny bit easier than pushing a button. 😜

When are the iPhone 7 prices dropped on the open market, typically?

After iPhone 8 and 7s announcement? or are they creeping down now slowly and there is no drop or special day to wait for?

The phone is due for a radical redesign no matter what, they've used the same basic shell for 3 years now. It's dated. OLED isn't anything special that competitors don't already offer. I'm sure they'll nail the FaceID, but again, so what? TouchID works so well that facial unlock isn't enough of a draw, imo.

What you're describing is stuff Apple should be applying to a yearly update, but it's clear they're awfully good at getting people to think this is some radical jump. It is to an extent, but only because they've been slowly incrementing the last 3 years after the introduction of the 6 design.

No way was FaceID the final goal. If TouchID was under the screen that would have been a beautiful solution totally in keeping with this design. This is Plan B.

If it has gone, I fully expect it to return as well with FaceID as an alternative.
