My girlfriend and I are thinking of going to NYC for New Year's. What do you have to do to see the ball drop in person, and is it even worth the trouble? I also wanted to know how hard it would be to see a broadway play around that time since I heard Times Square is blocked off. We are probably only going for 4-5 days ifif you don't include flight time.
Any suggestions of things to do outside the usual Empire Statre building, Rockefeller Plaza, etc..?

I'm of the opinion that it isn't worth it being out there in the bitter cold for hours standing around for the ball to drop. I tried it once, never again. I'd rather be at a warm bar nearby getting drunk with some friends watching the ball drop on the big screen.

But if you insist on doing the deed then be ready to get there really early if you don't want to be dozens of blocks away from Times Square hearing people cheer at stuff you can't see. The place fills up fast. I'm pretty sure some people even camp out there days beforehand.
