NYT: Trump Campaign Aides Had Repeated Contacts With Russian Intelligence

The problem is most of those handbooks usually rely on at least th threat or backing eventually that of the US military. You can't use that threat against the commander in chief.

Not when they have ammo to take unwanted elements in a "legal" manner. point is, Trump is nothing new to them, and if they are really sitting on anything that can tie Trump to Russia, they will make sure this get out in a way it ends to what they are looking to achieve.

Heck, this could be just giving them a taste of that Russian medicine, and just be the start of a smear campaign in order to tilt midterms elections and when he is up for reelection. if you think about it, had HC won, we wouldn't have being talking about possible midterms and Majority would had stood Red after 2018, now there is a possibility of change.

What ever happened to that talk about many members of the IC supporting Trump? I seem to recall something about descriptions of 'Trumpsville' or 'Trump country' in the FBI.

I recall hearing that too about the FBI, but remember, the IC is made up of multiple agencies including the NSA, CIA, military intelligence, DEA, and so on. Just because one agency may be stacked with Trump supporters doesn't mean the whole community is.

I think he singled out the FBI for spreading lies/leaks or something like that. He has no friends anywhere.

The NY office of the FBI with their Guliani ties were supposedly involved in a power play before the election.

Apparently they were butthurt about stuff Clinton did when NY senator.

Take with grain of salt I'm not sure those stories were ever truly verified.

Many of the IC organizations/reorg will have to come from Congress and the Pentagon. With the Senate Intelligience Committee already coming on board on investigating Russia and Mattis I think Trump is going to have a tough fight there.

Now if Mattis resigns? Then you know its Dictator Trump rolling through.

I think at that point the house and senate would finally cave.

Also, there were stories that he almost quit right at the start.

Sure, but these agencies are made up of individuals. He can have both friends and enemies scattered about. It does seem as though he's making a lot of enemies rather quickly. Trump is really making his own job more difficult by the day.

Well. Looks like Republicans are starting to change their tunes. Paul Ryan is now saying their should be an investigation into Flynn and possible leaks to Russia. So it's looking like we may be getting an actual investigation.
Jason Chaffetz also said something to that tune. You realize that Trump also wants an investigation to find the leakers, right?

You are talking about organizations that have handbooks to get rid of people like this and have done so for decades. this is not primaries or the election were he just need to lie his way to power, this are facts that will eventually see the light of day.

Agreed, the IC currently has the upper hand, but at one point so did all of his other opponents, but ultimately he can purge these agencies. The IC is forcing the republicans hand here into an investigation, it can turn around to bite them, especially if it is perceived as too politically damaging and threatening to their republican majority. We need to stop hoping republicans will grow a spine and apply pressure, as long as there is a rubber stamp at that desk they will defend him.

Yeah..there was something where people were asking each other..what is your red line to resign.

I would just prefer Mattis goes in with a military coup with Kelly and Harward and holds himself a president until new elections can be performed.

He might be able to eventually whittle down American IC, But he won't be able to touch foreign IC> So things will always percolate at least internationally.

Am I the only who reads this and thinks he's feigning outrage, but in reality has no clue what to do, or who actually is leaking?

I think that is completely accurate.

I mean, he hasn't been got a grip of the basics of White House management yet, let alone the ability to do a deep dive into your own IC.

like i said, this is different, because this doesn't depend on public vote to decide what should be done, Trump can lie, yell, insult all he wants, but when facts are out he can do little to stop it. This is not the Primaries or Presidential elections, this is just like how the Judiciary shut down his Muslim Ban, there somethings that he cant Win out.

And Dont get me wrong, I think this will not end his presidency, he will be president for 4 years, but the effect of the leaks should help out to reduce his popularity even more and if we are lucky he will only be in office for one term.

I don't really care what CNN says. Mattis has unbelievable influence in this administration, and he usually gets what he wants (which is a good thing for liberals). He's not going anywhere.

Yes. Thats basically what the article said. He drew a line and they caved.

But he does seem like a man of principal, and if he draws another and they don't cave, I don't think he'd flinch before bailing on them.

Also love how you don't care about unconfirmed sources, but YOU know the inner workings and how much power Mattis has. pathetic.

Mattis isn't going anywhere. You need to chill with the fantasy scenarios.

Good. But if Kelly/Pompeo/Mattis/Possbily Harward had those discussions of what a red line is, I hope they are not placed in those situations.

That will be the block to keep America Safe/stable as much as it can be under the Trump WH

He's not the kind of guy to flinch (the article said he threatened to quit which is really surprising), but yes he is a man of principle. Trump supported torture/ water boarding, and Mattis openely disagreed with him; Trump said he'd defer to Mattis on these issues.

I don't think Trump can remove Mattis because the backlash would be too great. There are many people (Trump included) who hold Mattis in high esteem.

Edit:
"Also love how you don't care about unconfirmed sources, but YOU know the inner workings and how much power Mattis has. pathetic."

What an ignorant thing to say. I don't need unconfirmed rumors to get an idea or understanding of something.

Ok. Nevermind. was waking up still. Turns out it was his quote about the leaks in general meaning all of them be it flynn or those leaking about flynn. My bad. Went back and checked the DVR. lol So yea I have egg on my face. lol

The agency’s investigation of Mr. Manafort began last spring as an outgrowth of a criminal investigation into his work for a pro-Russian political party in Ukraine and for the country’s former president, Viktor F. Yanukovych. It has focused on why he was in such close contact with Russian and Ukrainian intelligence officials.

Hmmm. . .

Why is he exacerbating the issue
He wants to cast this as a purely partisan witchunt, and maybe even draw Clinton out to respond, which would work in that favor.

He needs to shore up his base in order to use as a cudgel against Republicans who might try to distance themselves.

I know this is moving fast but can someone please please repost the "why can't we have both" gif with trump added into it. I can't find it via google.

edit - found it ignore me.

I don't understand this theory? Why would Bannon want to undermine Flynn?

ajORqmA.jpg

Why would Bannon put himself on the NSC and then depose the leader of the NSC? I think it's pretty easy to guess. It's a pretty huge and effective power grab. Flynn was personally controlling what intel Trump saw and he was a Trump ally for longer than Bannon. Removing him puts Bannon in a much better position.

Nah.

1. The damage it does to the administration hurts him more than what he gains

2. The danger of what is happening now (new nominee wants only his people in NSC) was too great.

3. Flynn had loose lips after Obama dismissed him, too big of a danger that the same would happen if he had even an inkling that he was taken out from the inside.

I don't buy the Bannon angle for a second.

One of Bannon's central tenets is to use chaos to grab power. I think there is going to be a pattern of plenty of churn at the White House with Bannon remaining as a constant.

This is true, but I would think its calculated and this doesn't seem to help him that much.

Who knows, really?
