The Times They Are a-Changin

"These people who are making a big deal about gay marriage?" Eastwood tells the magazine. "I don't give a fuck about who wants to get married to anybody else! Why not?! We're making a big deal out of things we shouldn't be making a deal out of ... Just give everybody the chance to have the life they want."- Clint Eastwood
how dare he curse

As stated one of the first replies, he finally shamed himself into it. The only reason he didn't do it earlier was because of perceived political reasons - shameful on a topic like this, IMO.

Much more brave of our man Mitt to support a federal ban on gay marriage!

Good question. What's needed to silence this subject forever? Supreme Court? President can't do anything alone can he?

Supreme Court ruling holding the State Constitutional amendments to be unconstitutional would be a huge step in the direction of overall marriage equality.

And no, the President can't do anything alone.

A Supreme Court ruling is the only way it will happen on a nationwide basis.

I shudder to think about how long it would have taken certain states to integrate their schools if it had been left up to them.

This always bugs me as I never really see gay advocacy groups coming to the defense of African Americans yet they expect and almost try to shame African Americans into supporting them.

because they were all in closet when they were supporting the civil rights movement. There's also a lot of support for gay and bisexual minorities (from gay advocacy groups).

Everytime something major happens in the Gay marriage debate, i keep being reminded by GAF that he hadnt done this yet. This has happened like 3 or 4 times so far.

I agree! My point is it is WORSE for a politician who KNOWS better and BELIEVES in better things to oppose equality for political benefit than for a politician to do so honestly.

ivysaur - We COULD have had a presidential candidate come out for equality in 2008, Obama just chose not to fight for our civil right to equal treatment under the law.

Still, I should probably bow out of this thread and let people celebrate.

This probably would have been a good course of action.

It is possible that I am mistaken, but I was under the impression that several gay rights advocacy groups had some sort of working relationship with various black civil rights groups.

Though you might be right that these relationships have generally been in one direction; I can't really say.

I thought that the bigger problem was individual gay people making that complaint who haven't demonstrated any concern or interest in the issues of African Americans, at least moreso than gay rights groups themselves.

Trying to figure out if that's the most out of touch with reality, crazy, bullshit thing I have ever read. Yes, anyone who is not part of a political party is an idiot. Wow.

Independents in America are infamous for changing their minds more than should be humanly possible. The Tea Party shift in 2010 happened because of Independents, and polls showed a month later they hated all the candidates they just voted in.

"Independents" in quotes. In reality they're just fence-sitters who've had months/years to research the candidates' policies but can't make up their minds until that last-minute 30 second negative ad. Not the brightest or most politically aware people.

I will vote for Obama in November, but if he loses this election, it will be because of this decision.

I don't see him losing because of this. I think this was a stroke of sheer genius on Obama's part.

Firstly because Obama probably figured that those who are vehemently opposed to same sex marriage will vote against him anyway no matter what position he takes ever. So this announcement doesn't sway them in any way.

Secondly then there are swing voters. If the Right reacts with bigotry to this news (which they already are), they will swing the independents towards Obama coz they will look too extreme and narrow minded.

Thirdly I understand Obama's election campaign has already raised more than $2 mill since he made the announcement. So this has ignited his supporters and sharpened the campaign. Obama has also said he wont interfere with state law with regards to gay marriage. I know State independence is a very big deal and its crucial.

You're giving the general public too much credit.

The people that are going to decide this election are:

(1) swing voters, who care about one thing and one thing only - the economy. Stupid shit like gay marriage, gun rights blah blah blah don't decide things for them when the economy is bad. Those things only come into play when there's nothing else going on.

(2) Liberal voters, like myself, that think Obama's been a huge letdown. If he can't inspire another huge young voter turnout, he could be in deep shit.

Conservative voters will be out in full force. The more hate and stupidity I hear from them, the more likely I am to forget that I think Obama's been a shitty president and cast my vote for him again.

Yeah, I think making a couple million in one day because of this decision says a lot about how much it might help re-energize excitement among his base for his campaign.

I'm not one to deny racism in the gay community, but I can't make heads or tails of what you mean when you talk about gay advocacy groups coming to the defense of African Americans.

But as you well know, the presidential election is not a national election. It is a state-by-state slugfest. So that graph . . .which only shows a noisy 50/50, isn't very useful.

I hope they did the state-by-state polling and made an informed choice on this. They are committed now.

I did not imply it was useful for Obama's delegate math. Rather, I represented it for what it was, which is a measure of public opinion on the approval of allowing gay marriage.

I'm sure we're in for an avalanche of state and national polling on the subject to get a more granular view of public opinion.

I was already going to vote for Obama but this just cements my vote for the November election.

I really hope this doesn't cause a political backlash and go against him though and right now I can see two things happening:

1) This announcement energizes the youth (my age group of college students, etc.) and wins election

2) Said energizing of youth isn't enough and Obama loses the votes in central US thus losing the election.

This doesn't change anything. Doesn't give gay people more rights nor does it change the outlook the American public has on Obama. Everyone knows Democrats are more for gay rights and Republicans are more for religious rights. Obama sharing his opinion is just reminding the public in hopes to get Republicans focusing less on the economy and to get the youth/democrat base voting in November. Its purely political.

I wish there was no racism in the gay community. I find that extremely depressing.

Gay marriage has nothing to do with 'religious rights', which is what I assume he was questioning.

Thats what the defense against gay marriage argues though... I was framing my point in context to both sides perspectives on the issue. I agree gay people should be able to get married and it should be a federal law.
