Obama announces support for same-sex marriage

The way we consider family has been evolving for a long time, and it only makes sense that our definition of marriage would evolve with it. Anyone who says otherwise is just as bad as people cherry picking bible quotes.

A traditionalist would not agree with framing it as 'evolution' which implies a long slow process. I have no idea as to the genesis of marriage, but I assume (correct me if I'm wrong) since the middle ages it was a fairly stable concept until the divorce boom of the 60s and 70s. So rather than evolution, traditionalists would use the term upheaval to describe "the way we consider family" and place it in the context of the broader cultural shift that followed in the wake of the sexual revolution. So I don't see that argument as comparable to cherry picking bible quotes.

Out of wedlock wunderkind Bristol Palin posted a blog entry suggesting that Obama's position is based on his girl's watching "one two many episodes of Glee" and that as a father, Obama should tell his daughters that children are raised better by one mom and one dad.

You know what, the irony is really scathing.

Wow, it's tough being a fame whore/ cum dumpster.

I have to post it, I'm sorry. The facial contortions you make are worth it.

Is anyone really surprised by the fact that President Obama came out of the closet for gay marriage? What was most surprising is when he explained how his position (supposedly) “evolved,” by talking to his wife and daughters:

“It’s interesting, some of this is also generational,” the president continued. “You know when I go to college campuses, sometimes I talk to college Republicans who think that I have terrible policies on the economy, on foreign policy, but are very clear that when it comes to same-sex equality or, you know, sexual orientation, that they believe in equality. They are much more comfortable with it. You know, Malia and Sasha, they have friends whose parents are same-sex couples. There have been times where Michelle and I have been sitting around the dinner table and we’re talking about their friends and their parents and Malia and Sasha, it wouldn’t dawn on them that somehow their friends’ parents would be treated differently. It doesn’t make sense to them and, frankly, that’s the kind of thing that prompts a change in perspective.”

Let’s pause for just one second. When Christian women run for high office, people inevitably bring up the question of submission. Once, Michele Bachmann, for example, was asked during a debate, “As president, would you be submissive to your husband?”

People automatically assume that a Christian female President isn’t capable of making decisions without her spouse’s stamp of approval. (I should add female Republican candidates –liberal women don’t get the same kind of questions.)

So are all those reporters who feared excessive family intervention in the White House all up in arms over the President’s announcement yesterday? Um. Not quite.

Liberals everywhere are applauding him for his bravery and his wisdom.

So let me get this straight – it’s a problem if my mom listened too much to my dad, but it’s a heroic act if the President made a massive change in a policy position that could affect the entire nation after consulting with his teenage daughters?

While it’s great to listen to your kids’ ideas, there’s also a time when dads simply need to be dads. In this case, it would’ve been helpful for him to explain to Malia and Sasha that while her friends parents are no doubt lovely people, that’s not a reason to change thousands of years of thinking about marriage. Or that – as great as her friends may be – we know that in general kids do better growing up in a mother/father home. Ideally, fathers help shape their kids’ worldview.

In this situation, it was the other way around. I guess we can be glad that Malia and Sasha aren’t younger, or perhaps today’s press conference might have been about appointing Dora the Explorer as Attorney General because of her success in stopping Swiper the Fox.

Sometimes dads should lead their family in the right ways of thinking. In this case, it would’ve been nice if the President would’ve been an actual leader and helped shape their thoughts instead of merely reflecting what many teenagers think after one too many episodes of Glee.

Gotta admit, the bolded is pretty funny.

To you. But to the many gay, lesbian and bisexual Christians out there (many of whom are part of gay-affirming denominations) they go perfectly fine together.

I think of it sort as like being a gay Republican. If the organization itself is fundamentally opposed to your existence, based purely on ignorant hate, one probably shouldn't participate in that organization, regardless of one's family history or alignment with other aspects of the group.

It's not like we're short of other religions and political parties, after all.

Ahahaha, there's a dude calling into NPR trying to say that the founding fathers are turning over in their graves because they believed in the bible

EDIT: "and Jesus reaffirmed it in the New Testament"

"If the news media was doing their job they would ask [Obama] what Bible he's reading"

Calling her a whore is crossing the line.

Pardon me, but to be clear I called her a fame whore (not the same as a prostitute) and a cum dumpster. I don't think she gets paid to have sex (and honestly, who would be willing to pay her for that anyway).

And if this particular unwed teen mom wants to weigh in on morality especially in regards to marriage, everything about her personal sex life is fair game.

Why the fuck would you call her a cum dumpster? Is it an attempt to marginalize her opinion because she's so publicly had a baby? Terrible choice of language man.

in the very least shes a hypocrite.

Fine, that's a provable point that has nothing to do with the fact that she had sex one time.

Fuck, here we are in a thread celebrating the progress America has made and in comes Mercury Fred with his stupid fucking posts showing everyone just how moronic some people on this Earth still are.

Thanks Mercury Fred, you're a shining example of idiocy to us all.

Oh give me a break. She's a disgusting hypocrite. She can either shut her trap or be open to all criticism and derision about her sex life. Sorry, fair is fair.

How is that the case? So because she's a hypocrite you get to call her a cum-dumpster? That's not fair, that's just as hypocritical as she is. That's missing the point entirely of ridiculing her for her stupid statement and instead targeting her for having sex before she was married. Also, cum-dumpster is despicable language in whatever context you use it and you should feel fucking terrible for saying it if you are over the age of 13.

You really can't see that calling a woman a cum dumpster because she had premarital sex is incredibly sexist? You are a misogynist.

I don't know about that. Fred has made similar comments about male celebs/politicians who are against gay rights.

I probably agree with you on most things, Mercury Fred, but I must say I often find some of your language troubling. I don't want to sound like some prude but I don't think calling Palin a "cum dumpster" is acceptable. Granted, what she has said about gay marriage is quite offensive, but I see no point in attacking her on sexual levels and demeaning her.

We're buds and all, I just disagree with your methods sometimes

Hell, you should feel extra terrible about saying it if you're 13 years old or younger too. Just to be sure.

Seriously Fred. You often do far more harm to the causes you care about than help. Such unnecessary and crude name-calling merely gives sympathy to the person you are trying to discredit.

She said something so stupid that it was easy to pick apart but instead you make yourself look like a jerk.

He seems to (sometimes) be one of those gay men who thinks that his homosexuality gives him free reign to use really, really misogynistic language. I'm no fan of Bristol at all, but it's bullshit.

Lol. If he sleeps around more than Bristol, and un-protected, then yes, I suppose that would be the case. But I have no idea about the personal lives of either person.

He's a mo, of course he sleeps around more than heteros!

(This is just joking since I know mercury has a sense of humor, even though hes crude)

I'm sure I've had more dick than dear pure Bristol, but I know how to use a rubber ;)

She was in a serious relationship when she got pregnant no? In love and all that. It's not exactly far fetched that she had sex un protected. I would have thought its a pretty natural thing for couples in love and in a serious relationship to do.

If you sleep around a lot, obviously it's a different kettle of fish and it makes much more sense to cover up.

some backstory: video was posted by a friend on facebook who is currently having a...mini-meltdown over supporting Obama on every other position except this one. For example:

Check out what I wrote on *****'s timeline about this...Tony Evans is not a politican, his job is not to please the secular audience with his positions. He must be lockstep with the word of God, the Bible. That's it. Of course he will be at odds on this position. He doenst have the luxury to make his decisions on polls, politics and campain funding. I love the man, he is a leader, a great servant of GOD. He has a wonderfull family, strong impact in the community and does a TON of good! The Bible is clear on the issue....so yes I agree. Doesnt make me a bigot or anything, Is God a bigot? I dont think so. Let's not forget Obamas move was a politically motivated on for winning an election. We have no choice but to agree w Tony Evans if we call ourselves Christians. At the same time I want OBAMA to win!

It'll be fascinating to watch some people deal with the cognitive dissonance over the next few months.

Really? And when did I release a press statement judging other people based on their sexuality?

It really doesn't matter when you start calling someone a cum dumpster because they express their opinion. That's part of the beauty of the country that we live in. Everyone is entitled to an opinion without having to be subjected to hate speech for expressing that opinion. I would have thought you would understand that.

Her argument boils down to saying:

1) Kids cannot teach their parents anything; put differently, parents cannot learn from their children.

2) Because that's how it's been for a long time, that's the way it's gotta be.

What thin, idiotic arguments. She's suggesting future generations have nothing to teach the one before it; that things need to stay the way they are because....that's the way they've been. As a parent of two daughters (ages 7 and 10), I can say I've learned so much from them; they have changed my life. I'm teaching them to challenge the way the world is, including their parents, in hopes that they will strive to better it.

Palin's way of thinking is so ignorant, it made me sad to read her drivel.

Let's turn this logic boat around. If God's not a Bigot, there's no way he could discriminate against homosexuals. Therefore, any reading of the Bible or of God's Word that results in discrimination against homosexuals must be incorrect. Therefore, homosexual marriage is totes okay with God.

Well, that was easy.

Megan McCain's way of thinking is so ignorant, it made me sad to read her drivel.

She clearly spent a lot of time trying to come up with a way to criticize Obama here. And much like Gaborn's reaction, it comes off insincere and forced. She's incapable of giving Obama anything but a backhanded compliment after acknowledging the historic nature of this announcement.

While late, it's certainly great news that Obama has come forth supporting gay marriage.

Megan McCain's way of thinking is so ignorant, it made me sad to read her drivel.

Did you confuse Megan McCain with Bristol Palin, or did I miss something? As far as I know McCain has always been supportive of gay marriage.

Anonymous people can be hypocrites and idiots with zero repercussion. Check.

It's the nature of anonymity. Fred calling Bristol a cumdumpster has limited impact at the worst in the wider world. Bristol spewing her venom gets press and airtime, and promulgates the homophobia prevalent in our society. I have a much bigger problem with the second than the first.
