Obama's Howard University Commencement Speech

Can we get a third term for our god emperor plz. Sad to see obama go. No fucks given obama has been amazing the past two years.

As nice a comment as this is, the constant "you're the whitest black guy I know!" comments I get beg to differ. Hopefully that kind of crap changes in the future.

Unfortunately I hear it a lot from white people who don't really know many black people.

Compromise for the sake of compromise is a flawed concept for many issues, say, police continually killing black people. What's the compromise for that?

Here in Australia gay marriage still isn't a thing. What's the compromise for that? How about trans people using bathrooms as according to their gender identity?

We can compromise on shit like free trade and banking reforms but conservatives cannot be reasoned with on social issues.

1. What even is compromise for the sake of compromise?

2. The compromise for gay marriage was civil unions and recognising gay marriages performed overseas (I believe gay Aussies flying over and getting married in NZ has actually become a bit of an industry). Not ideal but better than what was there before, which is the entire point of compromise. Then once your voters/politicians get their heads out of their asses, they can take the final step.

Anyway, great speech and he makes some great points more people should pay attention to.

And democracy requires compromise, even when you are 100 percent right. This is hard to explain sometimes. You can be completely right, and you still are going to have to engage folks who disagree with you. If you think that the only way forward is to be as uncompromising as possible, you will feel good about yourself, you will enjoy a certain moral purity, but youÂ’re not going to get what you want. And if you donÂ’t get what you want long enough, you will eventually think the whole system is rigged. And that will lead to more cynicism, and less participation, and a downward spiral of more injustice and more anger and more despair. And that's never been the source of our progress. That's how we cheat ourselves of progress.

this is amazing. this addresses tumblr in one paragraph.

Fantastic speech.

The only part I wasn't sure of is when he claims "the world is better too" and cites cherry-picked examples. Sure, the Berlin Wall is down, but North Korea is worse than ever. Sure, apartheid came to an end, but now we have things like Daesh. I mean it really depends on which parts of the world and I think whether or not the "world is better overall" really depends. That said, he does acknowledge more recent problems like terrorism and climate change, so there is that.

A few points.

More people die of violence than before. However, the numbers look that way because our population exploded, and there are of course going to be more violent deaths if the overall number of humans is high.

Taken on a per capita basis, less people die via violent means than at any other time in the planet's history. Wealth and health are higher than ever, and exhibit upwards trends in most countries.

Minor incidents of violence are reported widely due to the internet. While there is less per capita violence in the world, we know about nearly all of it due to the ease of information collection, which skews our perception of just how widespread violence is in our society compared to the past, when information was not as forthcoming.

Man, I'm going to miss Obama in general, but listening to this makes me especially sad that all of the current presidential nominees are garbage speakers, with Hillary being the only one with some potential.

You guys need to figure out how to get Obama a 3rd term. Although, if that happened, I'm guessing some Americans would lose their minds and try to start a civil war.

For all his faults and miscalculations, I don't think we understand just HOW good we had things with Obama.

I think another 4-8 years from now, we'll understand better.

Obama's somewhat ineffectual foreign policy aside, I think what people will regret the most is they had a smart and charismatic leader who was outside of the realm of politics and big money etc. Imagine what Barack Obama could have achieved with a Congress that fully supported him.

He came in on a sea of change and captured a generation of Americans like few President's before him. Will be a long time before we ever seen any of his like again.

This is very true:

And finally, change requires more than just speaking out -- it requires listening, as well. In particular, it requires listening to those with whom you disagree, and being prepared to compromise. When I was a state senator, I helped pass IllinoisÂ’s first racial profiling law, and one of the first laws in the nation requiring the videotaping of confessions in capital cases. And we were successful because, early on, I engaged law enforcement. I didnÂ’t say to them, oh, you guys are so racist, you need to do something. I understood, as many of you do, that the overwhelming majority of police officers are good, and honest, and courageous, and fair, and love the communities they serve.

You're not going to be able to shout and vilify your way to victory. No matter how right you know you are, still doesn't give you an excuse to act like a lesser man or woman on the alter of your moral superiority. Then you've completely lost the script and misunderstood about what it means to be progressive.
Listening to others is more difficult than most of us give credit for. Most of our educational systems are build around orally explaining ourselves, but nearly enough on the act of listening which manifests itself down to the very concept of agreement.
Too long, there has been a hostile "you're with us, or against us" type of tone in a segment of the left stratosphere. I really hope it will die down. The regressive left are hurting the cause of people who wants to promote issues through their toxic attitudes and entitlement for one-way communication.

Obama has his finger on the pulse so well. Everything he says just syncs up with what I think and believe so well. From the problems we face to how we should approach them.

Beautiful speech. I hope he doesn't disappear after January and stays active in the public eye. I bet he can still get a lot done, he's still young.

I find it hard to converse with people, who I can only refer to as "the enemies of reason."

Far too often in this country, we choose to reject a scientific/objective mind about things, and instead choose to appeal to an emotional/subjective mind to things. This is a disaster for every macro social issue we face. "Climate change ain't real because of God!" "Obamacare will literally kill people because the free market is our moral compass!" "Ending poverty is impossible, it's human nature to be lazy and greedy." These cultural memes, vapid in and of themselves, seem to be asserted as objective reality far too often in our society. How do you combat such pigshit? They not only have made their line on the road, but choose to emotionally retrofit any argument raised against them. It's like beheading a hydra, only for more heads to arrive.

After a while, it numbs you. You get to points where you wish to throw your hands up and say "just scorch earth the whole fucking thing, because maybe we'll learn that way." I wish I had the chutzpah and optimism Obama has, but all I see is ignore-ance of facts, of reality, of what is, so people can sit in their sandcastles and ignore the waves of disruption as suffering we seemingly allow to perpetuate. And the problem is too many of these people have too much influence because of sheer volume. :/

A damn good speech. I'm really kicking myself now for sitting out and not voting for a president in 2012.

I'm kicking myself for not encouraging others to vote. I fulfilled my role but didn't do even a little bit more. I could have at least encouraged some friends. Never again.

You guys need to figure out how to get Obama a 3rd term. Although, if that happened, I'm guessing some Americans would lose their minds and try to start a civil war.

they'll feel justified for all their shit throwing, they'll start actually eating it and pooping it back out at us then.

"ah knew it! they were just settin him up for a 3rd term! that's against the constitution!"

edit: anything that depresses and perplexes Tucker Carlson must be good.

Finally found time to watch this and it's simply an amazing speech with a perfect message for our divisive times.

That exact sort of thinking, a core message in his 2004 DNC speech which launched his rise to the top, about the necessity of listening and respect for everyone, even those who you oppose, IS why he's truly a great President. And who knows how much more amazing the country would be with today with an opposition that actually cared to listen as well. That he accomplished all he did is testament to his message on compromise. This last year, marked by the rise of Trump, has truly enshrined him as one of the greats and we may not see a POTUS quite like him in our lifetimes ever again.

He will be dearly missed.
