Obesity experts condemn Wii Fit...

It's a fact that bulimia and anorexia is big issue in the US. It's also a fact that many studies have linked those problems to mass media's obsessions with weight. Now Nintendo is telling kids that they are fat will only add to the problem.
yeah but pretending the situation doesn't exist is not going to help anything...

it is quite sad though; its something nintendo should of looked into beforehand. I hate when Normal weight people call themselves fat! In that aspect this isn't helping.

And it will be stated again:

The girl was not normal weight, she was overweight. The balance board doesn't lie, her father did. If she was 4'9" and 84 pounds, she would've had a BMI of 18.2 which is barely above UNDERweight. If the BMI calculation determined OVERweight, she must've been AT LEAST 116 pounds. At that height, 116 pounds is most definitely overweight.

yes I read that; thats why i called it a tragedy. I was just stating that Nintendo isn't doing anything wrong by calling people fat; if they are actually fat (ok maybe I didn't word it exactly like that)...

Okay, I agree. Fat people, in the privacy of their own homes, can be told that they are fat and encouraged to do something about it. Fat people won't lose weight if they don't acknowledge there is a problem.

I guess as usual what experts say doesn't mean shit and we'll just all have to take NeoGAF's word for it.

Glad this made it onto Yahoo, hope that Today Show and other mainstream media outlets pick it up as well. It's good to get this discussion out into the public.

Pretty much. I don't really believe media's come out and attack them. Sure, they may see magazines but they're not telling the reader in ink, "you're fat". This is a damn game saying just that to young girl who's very impressionable at her age. This "game" is going to cause tons of problems in this world. Especially when people find out they're not going to melt the pounds away with it then either.

Unless this "game" is certified by medical boards, they most certainly are doing something wrong saying that. It's no different than regular people talking shit on each other.

Besides, they're not calling people fat, they're calling people overweight on the BMI scale. And if they put in the height correctly and she didn't do something stupid when being weighed, then, well, she is according to BMI. I have no idea where in this chain the actual fault lies with Nintendo.

I dunno, I see something wrong with the fact that no one cares that Brain Age tells them their brain is aging, but there's controversy when a girl is called overweight.

Come off it. Are you naive enough to believe anyone deemed an 'expert' by Daily Mail? I would venture to say at least 25% of the folks on this board are more qualified to comment than he is.

There was a really fat man at the store today telling me how much he loved Wii Fit. He was really nice but I couldnt help feeling he was being tricked :(
Why? It's all about getting the motivation to exercise, and if Wii Fit helps him with that then what's the problem?
