Oblivion for PC: Must-have mods?

Baraka in the White House

2-Terms of Kombat
So I just recently got back into PC gaming and want to pick up Oblivion, as I've heard that mods can really fix and enhance the experience for this game. Well, there's a metric shitload of them out there, so in GAF's opinion what are some mods I simply shouldn't miss?

Try this thread

Which will lead you here right off

And then there's this older thread

You can also just google "Oblivon best mods" "top mods" "Best mod guide" and the like. Sort sites like TES Nexus by most downloads, most recommendations.

It can be pretty overwhelming. I'd recommend installing everything through the Oblivion Mod Manager so that you can remove it easily, otherwise you might end up in a case where you have to uninstall and reinstall everything from scratch.

I'd start with the unoffical patches and any performance enhancers you think might help; I imagine there's one for using more than 2GB of RAM and the like. Then move on to basic visual upgrades and make sure everything is going smoothly. You'll probably want to start a new game when you're done adding mods.

Any of you guys know how to deal with the sound issues ASIDE from buying another sound card?

I upgraded my drivers and all, but every time I play the game with any sound, it slows to 1fps.

Turn off sound? Max graphical settings at 60fps

I've tried various mods at TES, but nothing works...

Just hit the Top 100 list from TES Nexus and see what catches your fancy. That'll cover most everything. You do need to find Qarl's texture overhaul though as, to me, its the gold standard for Oblivion textures.

Corrected Link for Octagons(?) guide.
Qarl's texture pack is amazing, they're incredible even when you get really close.

Just be careful going down this rabbit hole. Modded Oblivion is an incredible game. But it's very easy to get so obsessed with modding it to perfection that by the time you get around to playing it, you're kind of tired of it all. I did this in the last couple of months, probably spent 20 hours trying to learn how to mod it, and quit playing after two. (Keep in mind I've probably invested 200-300 hours in it in the past, so it's not like I've never played it before or anything.)

Plus, modding Oblivion has actually gotten harder than it used to be (when I say used to be I mean many years ago last time I played it heavily) with the introduction of Wyre Bash. I understand all the awesome things Bash/BAIN does, but it seems like everywhere you go to try to learn how to use it just says, "There's no such thing as a quick guide to Wyre Bash. You just have to use it to learn it." and that is not fun. And everywhere also makes sure you know that Wyre Bash is incredibly hard to use, but super awesome. Yah, that's pretty intimidating.

Yeah, I'm trying to get Qarl's texture pack on there but the Oblivion Mod Manager doesn't seem to want to pick it up. Is there a different way you have to go about it for the Steam version of the game?

I'm pretty sure you can find an omod version of Qarl's pretty easily. Getting the redimized or whatever version I remember being a bit more difficult, I think I had to torrent it.

But that's what you want to look for, omod version.

Edit: http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=3985

There is one option. Note that that one is redimized and further reduced, but just an example.

This man knows what he is talking about. I spent many hours researching, downloading, installing and bug-fixing mods a few years back...only to barely touch the game itself. I'm going to give it another try this fall since a couple of key mods have come out and had some compatibility issues fixed. But you gotta accept some flaws because it's just too time consuming, otherwise.

I got mine modded the way I want in about a day and have been playing since. The only thing I'm missing visually is DOF and motion blur mods but they seem to have issues with HDR+AA. It's looking pretty nice and helps a 4 year old game look new.

Yeah I can't seem to mod mine the way I want it. Cannot seem to put in those sexy character models I see in screenshots. But the problem thats keeping me from playing the game is the draw distance is not far enough out. I'm riding on a horse and I'm seeing the grass being drawn in front of me that keep annoying me

Is Obilvion more of a CPU/memory game or a graphics card game?
