Oblivion PS3 and PSP revealed + screens

The hell at the agendas in this topic. :lol

So far, it looks the same as the 360 version with added content. The obvious ones being the new quests/faction and new armor (Knights of the Nine) present in one of the pics. There are bound to be graphical improvements, but I'm not seeing any huge graphical upgrade at all... and that includes the textures.

The lack of grass doesn't mean a thing, since there are points in the 360/PC game with the same lack of foliage. The additional content is a much bigger deal that any visual upgrade anyway.

On a side note... Why is it that whenever someone starts a post with, "I think x owners forget what x game looks like", they use the worst pics ever to try and prove their point?

i think a lot of people were just basically calling out sonyprophet on this one. that's all i was doing. i have no reason to doubt the person that played the game who thought that it looked improved over the 360 version, but sonyprophet's comments have been taken to heart because he's been right on so many other things. he said screenshots of the ps3 version looked like a totally different game and it was because bluray gave them more space for textures.

it's pretty apparent that he was totally wrong on both counts.

beyond that, i'm glad that PS3 owners who haven't already checked out the game now have a chance to do so. i also hope that 360 and PC owners get to play the new content in some way (even if it's only via a game of the year edition or some such).

You do know that some of those guys are devs or know that tech stuff right?

To tell you the truth I don't see any big difference the "sony prophet" had predicted. And now that it's finally for PS3 I can say it without getting bashed by xbox fans. This game looks ugly as hell (and yes if you've praised its graphics you suck at judging graphics
j/k
).
Having said that I expect better graphics from the Ps3 version since people who have seen it up close insist on that.

Anyone post the press release? Bethesda just sent them everywhere:

Bethesda Softworks Announces Oblivion™
for PLAYSTATION®3 and PSP®System

Award-Winning, Best-Selling Role Playing Game Slated As
PLAYSTATION®3 Launch Title in North America and Europe

September 28, 2006 (Rockville, MD) -- Bethesda Softworks® announced today that its blockbuster role-playing game, The Elder Scrolls® IV: Oblivion™ will be a launch title for the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system this November in North America, and next March in Europe when the new console is expected to be released there. In addition, The Elder Scrolls® Travels: Oblivion™ will be released on the PSP®(PlayStation®Portable) system in the Spring 2007 in North America and Europe.

Both the PLAYSTATION 3 and PSP system titles will be published exclusively in North America by Bethesda Softworks, while in Europe, Ubisoft will serve as co-publisher. Complete details on both games are available in Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine's (OPM) exclusive cover story (November issue), which hits newsstands Oct. 10. In its article OPM previews the gameplay, graphics, and new content in Oblivion and concludes: "If any game is worth the price of the PS3, Oblivion is it."

Released in March for Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and Windows, Oblivion has already earned high praises and awards from publications around the world. Official Xbox Magazine (US) gave Oblivion a 9.5 out of 10 and an Editor’s Choice award, calling Oblivion "An Absolute Masterpiece." G4 TV named it the Best Game of 2006, and PC Gamer (UK) ranked Oblivion #1 on its list of the Top 100 PC games of all time.

Metracritic.com lists Oblivion as the highest rated game of all time on Xbox 360. Oblivion has also been nominated for numerous awards in upcoming events, including the Golden Joystick Awards (five nominations) and The British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards (five nominations).

"We're very excited to be able to bring a game like Oblivion out for launch for the PLAYSTATION 3," said Bethesda Softworks president, Vlatko Andonov. “Oblivion's countless awards and commercial success to date make it clear that PLAYSTATION 3 owners are in for a real treat this November."

Oblivion features a powerful combination of free-form gameplay, unprecedented graphics, cutting edge AI, character voices by acting legends Patrick Stewart, Sean Bean, Terrance Stamp, and Lynda Carter, and an award-winning soundtrack. Gamers can choose to unravel Oblivion's epic narrative at their own pace or explore the vast world in search of their own unique challenges.

After the mysterious and untimely death of the Emperor, the throne of Tamriel lies empty. With the Empire ready to crumble, the gates of Oblivion open and demons march upon the land -- laying waste to everything in their path. To turn the tide of darkness, you must find the lost heir to the throne and unravel the sinister plot that threatens to destroy all of Tamriel.

Ahh, but that's the beauty of a console that has all those resources available to you. Remember, the Xbox 360 (and for that matter I'm sure the PS3) has a lot of real-time decompressing power in both video and audio, on top of which unlike a PC has 3 cores.

Most modern GPU's got plenty of compression standards built in, too. And wouldn't it be nice to have as little of those cores tied up in decompressing data? Because we know that developers never push the hardware in consoles, it's just an endless resource of computational power.

Not that it'll stop the Xbox 360 from have nice (and nice looking) games as is apparent from the current lineup. But to dismiss the storage limitation off hand'ish by just pointing at compression, just irks me a bit.

I guess what I was saying was that the 360 was built for dealing with compression. And their philosophy is built around getting into procedurally generated content (like the trees in Oblivion if we're staying on the thread topic) so as specifically not to have to worry so much about the DVD-9 size.

Not everything's suited for procedural rendering, from what I've heard from the art folks, something about having controll over the presentation or something.

...

Eh whatever, I'm only interested in the PSP version anyway (the real reason I'm in this thread).

No pictures == dissapointment :'(

I know I'm going to sound like a Sony prophet supporter and all, but wasn't certain things in his post hyperbole anyway. Why would the game look completly differetnt just because of some better textures?

That right there should have told us that he was just hyping "that" particular part up. But don't we still have that Joepm guy saying that the PS3 version looks a little better? Does his word account for anything?

I wonder if their is going to be any PS3 to PSP functionality like getting new armor or something from the PSP version.

It can be used as a rear view mirror while riding your horse.

Also, now that this is officially official, can we move the discussion over to the Official Oblivion Thread? We might be able to make 20k posts! :lol

anyone confused as to why we're all comparing it to the 360 version and being harsh on it, needs to understand that it's purely because of Sonyprophet.

he said the PS3 version looked like a totally different game because it had high res textures that couldn't fit on a DVD. that's why this thread has gone the way it has.

just a heads up to those unaware.

Far into the thread i know but your wrong this is what he wrote so you dont spread more misinfo

As a quick side note, Bethesda is working on a special edition of Oblivion just for PS3. We were shown some screenshots (sadly, not the actual game) and it looks like an entirely different game. Every texture is being replaced with new extremely-high resolution ones. It’s basically what Bethesda wanted to do the first time until they ran into the DVDs capacity limit. BluRay fixes that little bottleneck.

So for all we know it could have been th pc version. Higher res textures were actually released not to long ago. Why dont we wait for the true stuff before digging more holes eh.

Actually Eric, talking to you about this beats the hell out of talking about how many extra pixels these Oblivion screens are.

Most modern GPU's got plenty of compression standards built in, too. And wouldn't it be nice to have as little of those cores tied up in decompressing data? Because we know that developers never push the hardware in consoles, it's just an endless resource of computational power.

But that was sort of the point in having three cores. But the GPU also does it's share of on-the-fly decompressing as well. I don't know that it's sucking up as much of the core processing bandwith as we might think it does. You'd have to think, not that either of us had a hand in building the 360, that Allard and company would have thought far enough ahead to get a GPU to compensate for high compression rates. Not to mention whatever specifc compression MS uses for the console.

Not that it'll stop the Xbox 360 from have nice (and nice looking) games as is apparent from the current lineup. But to dismiss the storage limitation off hand'ish by just pointing at compression, just irks me a bit.

I never pointed JUST at compression. As I said in my last post, compression is one piece of the pie. Add that to procedural generation (which a few in the industry including Bethesda are already working with (see Speedtree)), audio compression, and XNA.

Oblivion came in under the DVD9 limit, so why didn't they use higher rez images then?

In fact, remember Starbreeze Studios saying this about The Darkness:

"They will be identical gameplay-wise. There will only be very minor cosmetic differences, such as the PS3 will have better quality video for the in-game TVs and on the Xbox 360 we have a bit more room for textures in memory."

And I believe that game is making it on DVD9, just without I Love Lucy (which if Starbreeze was smart, they could make a second optional CD to put in the HD-DVD drive for all that).

Anyway, everyone else can piss on each other over the Oblivion screens. I'm rather enjoying this conversation.

terrance stamp and lynda carter did voices for oblivion? i don't remember hearing them...not that i was particularly looking for them. is this something new for the ps3 version? if terrance stamp says "TELL THEM I'M COMING...TELL THEM I'M ****ING COMIIIIIIIIING" i'll buy seven copies.

Do you realize how often that single quote has been used? Every single time textures are discussed, that ONE quote is pulled out...

Nothing new there for the PS3 version. They were in the 360 version too.

Errrrrr. Maybe because it's.........a quote? If it's true, how does using it multiple times make it any less true?

Im not bothered about the game looking better or not. If it looks as good as the xbox360 version then Im happy. I just want to be able to play this amazing game without having to spend over $499 on another console to play one game.

The 'prophet' didn't hype it up, he lied his ass off. Replacing every texture in the game is a huge undertaking. And there's a world of difference from 'a little better' and a 'completely different game'. That's not hype, that's made up bullshit.

But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies

I'm much more of an Elder Scrolls fan than I am a fan of any particular console. This coming to the PS3 is a great thing as it means more people get to experience the game and Bethesda can finance the next game in the series. The 360 version, post patch especially, ran very well, and I'm guessing the PS3 version will be on par with that. Your in for quite a treat if you haven't played Oblivion yet, and it'll make a very nice addition to the PS3 launch library.

I don't think that it dedicates that much more transistors on compression than other potent GPUs. If it where that great to shift the transistor budget towards compression, I'd think that most PC GPUs would either have a similar budget or you'd start hearing about GPU fans having minor holy wars over the compression standards and their implenentation in ATI vs. nVidia GPUs.

I never pointed JUST at compression.

But that specifically is what riled me, or the .kkriger demo example to be exact. I'm shure Microsoft has nice dev tools and compilers that makes the trade off between size <--> speed a lot less painfull. What made me raise my eyebrow is the above choice of exampe, wich seemed to indicate that storage space on a DVD9 is an infinfinate resource as long as you sprinkle magic fairy dust^H^H^H^compression on whatever it is you're trying to do.

i've been incorrectly accused of FUD before, but i don't get what you're trying to say RavenFox?

he only saw screens. we've only seen screens. they do not look like different games at all, infact they look very similar... and as i said in the post on this page, i have no reason to doubt the OPM guy that played the game on PS3 and said it was looking better on PS3.

Prophet saw screens. We've seen screens. he was flat out wrong on this one.

Uh, I didn't really do much searching for those pics man. Everything but the water pic from me was right up there on Gamespot. I could've gone for more dynamic shots or one of a sweeping landscape, but that'd mostly convey the nice art the game has, not the technical prowess. It also would be unfair to compare those to the PS3 version because we haven't seen shots like that for this version yet.

It's one of the reason's I hate screenshot 'wars'. Only a handful of people try to be objective with them and find similar screens

Oblivion will be the first elder scrolls game I will play. I ingnored the game before it was released but as soon as the game was released and began getting the amazing reviews I started to become very interested in the game. Im just really happy its out on PS3 because I didnt want to have to miss out on the game, but I didnt want to have to buy an Xbox360 to play it either.

The game is amazing. I've played all the Elder Scrolls games and Oblivion is the most accessible of them all. Easy to get going, but once you get the grasp of things, you start to realize how deep it is, and how open the game play is. It can be a little overwhelming at first though.

Simply amazing news for Sony and thier fans.

A portable version of Oblivion? That was simply UNTHINKABLE before Sony elevated handheld gaming out of the ghettowith the PSP.

I cant wait to see how it turns out :D

The only thing wrong with those images is that they don't show off the textures at a distance much, which is the one place where the game is lacking imho. Textures on far away objects can be very bland and lack details. Like on distant hills and mountains.

So, can anyone here provide a definitive answer to the following question?:

Is the PlayStation 3 version of Oblivion expected to look better than the Xbox 360 version?

Yes or no?

What, you mean this?
The water looks just as good, if not better, than the 360 version. The game overall definitely looked better when I saw it...and they were still optimizing things like LOD.
Which was posted quoting this:
If they really looked the same the Official PS Mag would probably have said, "it looks just as good if not better than the 360 version."? That's just the bullsh:t way of the official mags(oxm is no different).
Just sounds like the guy has a sense of humor. I guess it could be taken that it definently looked better than the 360 version, but given that everyone was bitching about the screenshots then, esp. the water, he probably means the game definently looked better than the ss.

Anyways, where's that damn MGS3 vs Oblivion video when you need it.

Based on these screens, probably not. Based on the game, you have to wait until videos or the actual game.

Graphics aside, I'm excited that this game is coming to PS3 -- I plan to eventually own that before I'd buy an Xbox 360, but I always thought Oblivion sounded really cool.
