Octopath Traveler [OT] Eight for one, one for eight

I have almost 100 games on my Switch.

Octopath Traveler is my favorite.

sorry for the necro,

I got this game on release and I felt let down it wasn’t an overarching typical JRPG story so I put it down midway through completing chapter 2s. I recently picked it back up and I am loving it. I am going through and cleaning my side quest log. I was pretty much rotating out my 4th party member and keeping my main 3 but as I can see I handicapped my myself in doing so.

I’m trying to even everyone out before starting chapter 3s any tips for some good leveling besides cait hunting?

I quite enjoyed this game, my biggest complaint was the blurry backgrounds. It's a beautiful artstyle let us see ALL of it.

How is the story and characters in this game, I read that it's kinda disjointed or something is that true?

The thing with this game is you can start with any character and recruit your party members in any order or even don’t recruit none them. Because of the open nature of of this game, the story progression is not same as other JRPG out there.

This game has been a struggle to finish. The visuals, gameplay and music are all bunkered down by throwaway stories and a terrible script.

Can someone tell me how many chapters there are for each character? I’m on chapter 3 on all but two character I have yet to recruit (not wanting to sit through an hour of terrible dialogue) and already over 50 hours in.

Not for me. I absolutely loved this game from start to finish. An instant classic for me. As excited as I am for Bravely Default 2, what I really want is another game just like Octopath Traveler.

Really? I only played the demo, but was impressed with the writing. The story for the dancer/concubine was fantastic. So it gets a lot worse?

Each individual story is fantastic. The characters barely acknowledging each others existence is very jarring though.

It really is best seen as 8 separate JRPGS told in cyclical fashion.

I got back into it and while I struggled staying interested in the early game, I really enjoy the late game. I only got four Ch.4's left and I unlocked all of the advanced classes before doing any Ch.4.

The advanced classes are pretty awesome and I loved that the boss fights to unlock them were actually difficult. It's also fun starting to see things finally tie together in the story.

My only real issue with the game was the end-end boss. I guess technically, it is optional, but it ties all the story threads together, I felt like I needed to beat him to really beat the game.

The issue is he is so much harder than anything else in the game and required an absurd amount of grinding to beat. Even then, it wasn't easy. That kind of killed my motivation for another playthrough.

I never got that far. Killed the optional bosses for the extra classes though. Is he harder than those? You become stupidly powerful with the extra classes.

There's a hidden boss after completing all of the chapters, and you have to use all 8 characters this time.

Much harder, yes. You need to be level 70+.

It also involved fighting 8 other minibosses (without save points) before you can even attempt the final boss. If you lose to the final boss (almost guaranteed if you go in blind), you have to fight all those bosses again before getting another chance. It's a bit absurd and goes against the more relaxed feel of the rest of the game.

No. But you still need to have a decent strategy. It's been a while, I don't remember a the details.

I grind a lot. Still haven’t reached 2 characters and everyone is already 50+. He can’t be that difficult maxed out, can he?

Also, how many chapters are there per character?

There's 4 chapters per character. Strategies and perks are the biggest thing for late game, even at lvl 70 your max HP is still only around 3k depending on how many HP buffs your using.

Like for instance one strat that works well for late game is equipping the perk "saving grace" on your whole group. If you start a battle off with heal more with Ophilia you can typically hit around 6k max HP. It will give you a large buffer against burst damage. Likewise you can also use olive of life (L) on a dead character and if they have saving grace equipped their max HP will be 9,999 on revival.

I'm stuck in Chapter 4, the Fights are too hard...now the Backtracking begins..

Ana comment howI can get stronger effectively?

Loved the battle system, the freedom of the world, the music and the art style. Writing and voice acting were mostly abysmal and the idea of each character having a special skill was a good idea that wasn't particularly well executed.

Would be down for a sequel once Bravely Default 2 is done.

Not a good game IMO but I imagine it would work well with a podcast, or even an audiobook, in the background.

I would also add soulless like current gen Zelda and Mario imho.
Disagreed. Imo all of those different stories are just convenient excuses to venture out on the map while slowly perfecting character builds (equipments, jobs, unlocking skills, creating combos /strategies) and killing bosses.

The gameplay are what actually defines these type of games, and unlike others, it doesn't need to have a grand story to entice the players, its gameplay is already superb enough.

Also it's obvious that in general any kind of plot in games are mostly shit anyway with only a couple of good ones standing out, so I'm not sure what kind of "soul" these games are missing. If anything, the trend of movie-like walking simulator games, only worthy of showcasing fancy graphics with mostly shit to mediocre, afterthought gameplay at best are the ones that feels soulless to me

Steal/buy the most expensive gear you can. There's incredibly good shit on townspeople scattered across the towns that lie on the edges of the map (behind the high level zones). Just run from every encounter, get to the town, check what's on sale, go grind whatever you can for cash, buy the overpowered crap. Now you can kill bigger things. Rinse & repeat. You can save scum stealing, so all you need is a 1% chance and some patience.

Agreed :messenger_beaming:

BUT, while your point on gameplay is well taken (I say that's the whole point of a game contrary to today's trends), I mean that those particular games are soulless to me in that they're missing the human touches that made them special in the first place. They're beautifully executed in a technical sense, for sure, but they too often feel like a repetitive chore with ill thought out mechanics and without any rewards of "heart" (i.e. Zelda with an empty, lifeless world or a Square JRPG with no real story).

Otoh, a game that does this very well is Animal Crossing, even though the whole game is a grind! A very charming, whimsical grind that motivates you and gives you a sense of accomplishment. Same with the Yakuza series. Endless street brawls, the game even gives you an item to reduce their frequency, yet the games are so incredibly moving, funny, and rewarding regardless.

Only JRPG I've loved since FF6. There has been others I liked, but not nearly as much as this game. I play though the game regularly (except for beating the optional last boss).

I'm currently playing OT and yes, this 8 way system they build is too close to a normal JRPG, there is no real difference between a linear story with 8 protagonist you meet one after another and this form with smaller 8 not so good stories. Each plot is really thin with the usual cliché, something from the old school JRPG.
Even the combat system isn't so deep EXCEPT for the boost mode.
I'm not disappointed so far but not satisfied either.

Well I pretty much disagree. BOTW is the peak terrain puzzle galore from how it execute much of its sidequests and mysteries, you really can't go wrong with that, getting satisfaction from every big or small discoveries. Rewards are mostly fluffs anyway in other games, it's like getting rare items in gacha games, less from your efforts and more from the game giving you "numbers" in their mercy.

Again Octopath have their real stories, even an ending, unless that's just you being hyperbole.

Also Yakuza games can be boring and repetitive too, having played 0 and both Kiwamis.

Focusing on Zelda as an example, I'm trying to say that while BotW gives us a perfectly executed and consistent open world sandbox for experimentation, for me it's missing the human side like heart, charm and motivation.

Same as Octopath. Who ever heard of a Square JRPG without an epic, moving story and memorable characters? Perfectly executed throwback to the 90s glory days, but empty feeling.

That's not to say that soul is the be all metric for games, just that Octopath, BotW, and Odyssey all seem to lack this particular quality to me, which I value highly.

AC and Yakuza are examples of games that are far less sophisticated in terms of gameplay, but more than make up for it with an overall delightful and satisfying experience.

Ok so I just grabbed this yesterday because of my love for those old school classic Square RPGs. I’m aware of the non connecting storylines etc which is kind of a bummer, so I’m in it for the soundtrack, enviro design and battle system.

My only question is this: How the hell
do I approach tackling all of these individual stories? Is everything laid out in such a way that you don’t lose your footing with whoever your initial main is? Like, will I have sunk 15 or so hours in and then all of a sudden have to switch to someone else? Am I able to bounce between? I’m just trying to figure out how I can systematically knock all stories out without becoming overwhelmed.

Your main character will always be with you, until you complete their entire story arch. I did chapter 1 for all characters, then chapter 2 for all, and so on. For me, it seemed to be the most enjoyable way to play the game.

I currently have four characters over level 70 and have yet to even get to one character. Take your time, enjoy the game at your pace, you can always switch them out!

Approach the game however you wish. Technically you could solo the game with your starting character, or just pick up 3 others and ignore the other half of the cast. Or you can patiently work your way through the stories, exploring the world, performing sidequests, picking up more characters, etc. I could be mistaken but I don't think any character is "essential", especially since you can acquire all 8* jobs via the shrines.

You aren't forced to swap characters in, ever, unless you need to work on that character's specific Main Quest.

I invested 150 hours into completing all 8 characters' stories, and then after that I found a respectable digestif of post-game content.

Really solid RPG. I can't wait to start completely from scratch and replay it.

*technically there are more than 8...

i was so turned off by everyones initial hot takes

Ive been hunting hard for a new switch game as i feel like nothing is exactly my cup of tea.

I think this will be my next game.... i mean if i loved the demo, I should give the rest of the a game a try.

I have finished this game last week, I confirm everything I wrote before, it's a good game but not unforgettable, the 8way system doesn't work really well since characters don't interact each other in the main story, except for some disjuncted dialogues, the combat system is good but nothing special, character's plots aren't interesting, music is mediocre except for few tracks (final final boss music is wonderful).
The only thing the game do great are the settings, I'm full of screenshot of those incredible environments, despite low poly assets and 2d arts.

Ultimately it's just a good game.

Been putting some time into Octopath Traveler lately and i'm really enjoying it, quite challenging and the stories aren't that bad, voice acting is pretty good.

Not sure if i'll be doing any side quests, since I don't know what the rewards are, I might try a few just to check out.

I only just recently got into the 30 hour mark and i'm finding some pretty good setups finally, i'm really glad I chose Ophillia as my starter because her and Alfyn have a devastating combo, easy 3k to 4k damage (or 7k to 8k damage with Primrose in the mix) They just absolutely destroy bosses and difficult wild encounters. Honestly, my first impression of Aflyn weren't good and he was for the most part the weakest character of the bunch for me, but now that he's proved his worth, he's second behind Ophillia and basically my go to.

I tried the demo of this ages ago on switch and really liked it. But the price was too much of a gamble. Enter gamepass and Xbox. I'm about ten hours in. Got chapter 1 to complete still for some chars.

I have olberic, primrose, tressa, cyrus, alfyn all unlocked and completed. Difficult to choose who to leave out. Cyrus has too many elementals to leave out. Olberic is a good physical, tressa is OK but her wind elemental also has two physicals - bow and polearn, alfyn is too good to not leave out which leaves primrose. She has dark magic but dagger isn't a main weakness of any enemy so far and it isn't powerful physical. So I think I'm gonna drop her for a bit.

Sound good octo-gaf?

Personally I liked using Primrose for buffs to Ophelia or Alfyn but the game is pretty flexable imo with the team you choose

Doesn't matter, you're forced to use the original characters in their own stories either way. I'm sure you could find out the best mix of them later.

I guess ultimately I have to try the chapter and ascertain what enemies are there. Then if I get rinsed adjust my party set up in town right.
Yeah, that's usually what I did. I had 2 or 3 characters that were essential to my party the remainders would be switched out for someone that could do well in the area or use the levels.

And just to be clear. I don't have to repeat the chapter 1 for each play through? Like I started with olberic. And I'm playing each chars story mission. That doesn't mean I have to go back and start a new game with hanit and with Primrose etc?

There's no benefit because I'm essentially playing each characters intro mission anyway (provided I don't skip it)

Yes. Just imagine the characters doing their own stories and others tagging in as mercenaries hired from the tavern.
