BEST OLYMPICS EVER.

During the mens high bar, I know the audience were booing at the fact that Aleksei Nemov was scored too low, but were they also booing Paul Ham?

The Cuba/Canada semifinal in baseball was just heartbreaking. To be leading by a run, then the nightmare 8th inning that just seemed to go on forever, then Canada in the 9th comes within *INCHES* of a game tying homerun in their last at bat after almost completing an amazing comeback for the ages.

And now instead of a very winnable bronze medal game against the Aussies we get a pissed off Japanese team. :( :(

Canada should just leave Athens ASAP...for the most part it's been a total disaster. It's tough seeing the athletes that didn't come through taking it so hard. Pretty damn heartbreaking really. Even more so when they're apologizing to the country for not getting on the podium, as if we've got anything to do with their hard work.

C'mon, NBC, stop making 90% of your Olympics broadcasts gymnastics. If I want to see little girls twisting and flipping and then crying afterwards, I'll go rent an Asian porno or something. Volleyball is much more interesting (and not just for the ass n titties)

Trampoline too (at least the prospect of the athletes bouncing too far and eating mat, anyway)

8-25 Today I lost to Khazkistan 4-1. It was into OT. I went for the throw and I did not get the result I wanted. I will go for the Bronze tonight. I am still strong.

In their infinite wisdom, the IOC has publicly denounced the practice of keeping Olympic Journals. I say, poo-poo on you, IOC, but thanks for throwing us this big party every four years. The IOC's argument has something to do with controlling broadcast rights that sponsors have paid millions to attain. Check out the article. One of the best parts of the Olympics is the comraderie, the coming together of nations in a peaceful gathering. What's wrong about sharing that with friends, family, and even strangers back home? Wouldn't the fostering of the Olympic spirit through a personal website bring more attention and adulation to the movement as a whole? I say, pass this link on to as many people as you can so they call all share in the 'illegal' American practice of free press and democracy. I shall not be silenced! :)
Yeah!

Normally, I don't really care much about syncronized swimming. As soon as Liberi Fatali started playing, I had to sit down and watch... in awe.

The transient dominance of the Japanese Men's team three decades ago doesn't waver the overall Soviet ascendency and of its its satellites (East Germany, etc.) at all, and it did so for both genders. It's no coincidence U.S. took its first women's team gold only after the Unified Team splintered.

Nope. The Russians were crippled due to the noise control (or lack of their off). It brought down the russians as it did the romanian Ecaterina Szabo (1984) who did not over come the noise control. Yup, Mary Lou had three things going for her, no Soviets, quiet crowd during her routines only, and a thunderous cheery noise after her performances that crippled gymnast left and right.

There is a reason every international gymnast dreads competing in the United States. And it was blatanly obvoious during the Russians 1996 Atlanta floor routines as the music was overpowered by noise.

The down fall of the Soviet Union had little effect on the gymnastics as the gymnast still competed under Russia instead of their respective countries. ( Svetlana Boginskaya, Vitaly Sherbo, and Ivan ivankov all from Belarus still competed for Russia ). This happened in other sports as well however I only remember the gymnastic specific ones. The Russians were also a power house up till 2000 untill they most retired, and their up comming stars left the sport due to illness or injury.

Maybe now you can say the downfall has made its effect since the Russians are in a drought and have no where else to pull from.

there was a huge uproar from canadians about mens vaulting (gymnastic) where the dude who won gold on the mat ended up taking a good jump and hopped but that's it. then the next dude does a vault does a good jump but when landing he falls to his hands and goes out of bounds then gets a higher score resulting in a bronze medal getting completely robbed from Canada. I figured it wasn't that bad but when I saw the footage, Canada got a medal completely STOLEN. Maybe they should stop dope-testing the athletes and start testing the judges.

Wasn't able to comment on this earlier cause I didn't have internet access for a while, but this really pissed me off. The guy slipped, hopped, stepped, stepped not only out of bounds, but OFF THE ENTIRE MAT! Not only that, his scores were like 9.0, 9.1, 9.1, 9.45, 9.5, 9.5 ...it's like... how can the judges vary like that?

Oh wait, the 9.5's are all from judges from the athletes home country and surrounding countries...nope, no bias there, no way!

...in Barcelona, and they competed for the CIS. Splintering of the Soviet gymnastic program and a weaker fiscal backing had little effect on gymnastics? By your logic, if Microsoft was fragmented, they would still have a stranglehold on the OS market. I think you need to stop playing devil's advocate.

The real issue at hand is that it technically isn't allowed in the first place. The purpose of taking out the high and low scores is to balance out possible high marks. In this case, you were still left with a four point difference, and judging rules basically state that there can only be about a 2 point difference between scores. In this case, the 9.5 and the 9.45 or the 9.1s (Likely the higher) would have been forced to change their marks. The Canadians tried to argue that point to begin with, but their appeal was summarily rejected by the Romanian President of the International Gymnastics Federation. Shock and or awe.

Unless Despatie wins Gold in Tower, and unless they bow to the Canadian empathy and give it to Felicien to help her out (Not that she should take it simply for her...fall), Shewfelt is guaranteed to be carrying the flag in the Closing Ceremonies, what with his huge first gold medal and the fact that he was robbed of a second medal.

Larry Brown is blaming the US Basketball team's poor performance on the fact that the refs aren't giving the players special treatment....

"Everyone always talks about the 1992 team, but you look at the 1996 team, the centers were (Hakeem) Olajuwon, Shaq (Shaquille O'Neal) and David Robinson, and the power forwards were (Charles) Barkley and (Karl) Malone, and I imagine every referee knew those guys. Now you look at our team and it's a lot different. The only one of the big guys they look at and probably say 'Hey, wow' is Timmy Duncan, and I don't see him getting a lot of respect."

...

WHAT THE FUCK. You aren't supposed to get special treatment. He's saying the reason that the team is losing is because they are stuck playing on an equal playing field. Wow, Larry. I actually thought I respected you for a couple of months there. That's it, I'm rooting against the US from now on. I've already hoped that a synchronized swimmer would drown because the dumb bitch killed people when driving after drinking, and her sentence was postponed because the judge didn't want to ruin her chance at the olympics. God damn I hate the people in this country.

You're not serious, are you? This really happened...I shouldn't be surprised if this is actually true. That's insane.

It happened, ESPN ran a story on it. Basically she was driving her boyfriend and a kid to a baseball game and lost control of the car and slammed into a tree. Her boyfriend and the kid died. The boyfriends parents have forgiven her because they know it wasn't intentional, but the kids parents basically hate her and don't think it's right that she gets to go to the Olympics.

USA did good today.. Marbury had his good game (which only happens 1/10 times) Maybe he can keep it up? I doubt it.

That ordeal at the end was the most entertaining thing in the olymipics so far :D

Fuck the haters, USA beat Spain 102-94. The US players seemed to finally adjust to the International game and used their athletism to their advantage. Marbury broke the record for most points scored by a US man in the Olympics with 31 today. Iverson played under control and played some great defense. So now I guess all the haters will be pissed now. USA still on the road to gold. The officiating still was terrible, on both sides of the ball.

Remember this from the playoffs, Gasol?

The way they've been playing, I was worried they wouldn't have enough but they finally got their shooting game going. That was just sour grapes on Spain's coach’s part. Fuck you, too!

So what ended up happening in this shot?

Is anyone else incredibly insulted by this? Suggesting that "white America" is rooting against Team USA because they're "rich black men" is absurd, and, not to mention, incredibly racist of the author himself. I can't believe someone gets paid to write shit like this.

Whitlock is a fucking moron but you gotta wonder why this team gets so much flack for being "arrogant", when many other athletes who are no different are "confident"...

yeah. People long for the white superiority of the beloved 1992 Dream Team. Jason Whitlock proving once again that he's a stupid fat fuck. Throwing out the race card here like an idiot. Hell, Allen Iverson, cornrows, tatoos and all, is one of the few guys actually getting props (along with Duncan) for playing WELL by most people. His fatass needs to get white america/black america off the brain, and actually dig a little deeper. The reason people are rooting AGAINST team USA isn't because they are unpatriotic racists, its because 1) having a team full of filthy rich allstars kinda kills the whole "amatuer" angle and 2)these guys have, for the most part, been playing without any sense of fundamentals or team basketball.

This guy has his head stuck up his ass.

People aren't rooting against the so-called Dream Team because they're black (true sports fans, anyways. Racists are going to be racist no matter what). They're rooting against this bunch of malcontents because they CAN'T PLAY TEAM BASKETBALL. The disgusting lack of training in the fundamental aspects of the team game have come full circle and bit Team USA in the ass, and true fans of the sport are loving it.

Drive the lane, freak out as the defense collapses in on you, fire the ball out to an open guy who can't shoot a three YET somehow makes 10 million a year? CLANK

Pulling the race card in this instance is complete and utter bullshit. Let me know when the guys in the Ryder Cup start driving off the tee with a putter to show off their mad skillz. There were more than a few blacks on the greatest Dream Team of all time, I think. And those guys played proper team basketball. Don't recall anybody rooting against them in the USA then. Nope, can't recall that at all.

Learn to play the goddamn game the way it should be played. Don't come to me with that bullshit about no respect from the refs. The refs aren't throwing bricks when Jefferson is open from behind the line. You shouldn't be looking at the refs to bail your non-fundamental knowing ass out when other international teams can get their shit together and play as a unit - not as a bunch of individuals.

Whitlock needs to go soak his head in some ice water.

And by the way, jackass, it's not arrogance if you can BACK IT UP. This bunch have proven wholly incapable of doing so.

Arrogance is showing up, flashing the "USA" logo on your chest and expecting the refs and opposing players to bend over and spread their cheeks.

Twat.

"Once every four years, Phelps and Carly Patterson and Justin Gatlin get an opportunity to strike it rich. They go all out. Don't romanticize it. They're chasing money -- endorsement opportunities -- just like the NBA players. "

That guy makes me sick. What does he know about these people. Does he think these people spend their entire lives training probably 10+ hours a day to POSSIBLY make a lil money at the olympics. Most olympians would probably be better off working at mcdonalds during those hours and make more money.

"But do they care about the Olympics the way Michael Phelps does? No. And we shouldn't expect them to. American basketball players don't spend their childhoods dreaming about playing in the Olympics. Their goal is the NBA. For swimmers and track athletes and gymnasts, on the other hand, the Olympics is the pinnacle."

Fine, but there are players that would like to really player hard for their country. Let them play, don't let these players who have no real interest in doing it outside of getting a few extra endorsement deals.

The whole reason people are rooting for a different country has nothing to do with race, it has to do with those other countries actually wanting it bad enough to play their ass off to get it. That's always more appealing that some brute force coming in thinking they can steam roll over everyone.

Spain goes 5-0 in the prelims and they get USA in the 1st round, destroying their chances at a medal.

As much as Pesquera had a reason to be angry, he is a bit of a crackpot himself.

He used the postgame press conference to rail about the officiating, even though U.S. was whistled for 10 more total fouls.

He whined that his previously undefeated team was now out of medal contention, like he never heard of a single-elimination tournament.

He saved the best for last. "I think we were the stronger team," he said.

Hey, coach, your team just got drummed. Spare us.

haha

"having a team full of filthy rich allstars kinda kills the whole "amatuer" angle"

PBS had a great program on the Olympics that delved into the "amateur" issue. In short, the Olympics, in the early days, were for the rich and elite and the requirement that you couldn't be paid was just a way to keep the poor and working class out of the games. Too bad PBS aired the series during the first week of the games, which meant most people wouldn’t see it.

I do not understand why the Spanish coach could be so angry about a timeout being called. What the hell is so offensive about a timeout? Anyone? And bitching about the officiating when you have a clear advantage on fouls against is absurd. This guy is a complete ass. He's such an ass that I'm going to start rooting for the US team again to make this guy look like even more of an ass.

No Grizzly fan is surprised that Pau looked great early in the game and then disappeared in the 4th quarter. That's what always happens.

At the time the timeout was called, US was up by like 16 with well under a minute left. That's unnecessary. What he didn't know was that Brown had asked the scorer's table for a timeout at the next dead ball, and when he asked it was only an 8 point lead with over a minute left. He couldn't cancel the timeout when the lead was made bigger, and the Spanish coach thought that he was just calling the timeout when he was actually trying to cancel the earlier call.
