Tigers just blew a 7-3 lead over the Royals. Todd Jones blows ANOTHER save .. now 8-8. Not that I have any faith in the Royals actually winning.

Jamey Wright is pitching a one hitter .. but is in danger of giving up a 5 run lead. :lol

edit: He got pulled after 3.1 innings only giving up 1 one ... but walked 6 batters. lol

I don't really get it. He seems better than Nieves, but that doesn't mean much.

Who is the kid we gave up?

Jeff Kennard, AA reliever + potentially Wil Nieves(-8 OPS+) for Jose Molina (46 OPS+)

ground breaking trade

edit: Nieves DFA'd.

Henn up, DeSalvo down. Chris Britton to DL at Scranton.

So I know ERA isn't the best stat, but let's look at the ERA's of every White Sox reliever used this season:

1. Bobby Jenks - 3.79
2. Mike MacDougal - 6.23
3. Nick Masset - 7.09
4. Matt Thornton - 4.96
5. David Aardsma - 6.40
6. Andy Sisco - 8.36
7. Boone Logan - 5.81
8. Dewon Day - 12.27
9. Ehran Wassermann - 20.25
10. Charlie Haeger - 1.59
11. Ryan Bukvich - 4.11
12. Bret Prinz - 8.10

edit: :lol :lol :lol Even with DIPS, only 3 of those guys have better numbers:
Aardsma - 3.85
Jenks 2.66
Thornton 3.84

Jenks has been great all year, he's just had to pitch erratically or has had to work two innings, both of which have never happened to him before in his career. Thornton has been our second most consistant guy all year, so that makes sense. Aardsma's 3.85 is still only because of his insane May.

Sorry I keep posting about this, but this is just too hilarious.

Stuff
A rough indicator of the pitcher's overall dominance, based on normalized strikeout rates, walk rates, home run rates, runs allowed, and innings per game. "10" is league average, while "0" is roughly replacement level.

Dewon Day - -27

Yes, 0 is replacement level. He is at negative twenty-seven.

Man... I dunno. No way I was expecting that at all...
(An angels team without a Molina! Who woulda thunk it)
I predict an even bigger tailspin (woah woah woah, Tailspin!) now that they're Molinaless.

Deadline stuff from this early morning

YANKEES BUZZ

The Yankees and the Devil Rays have discussed a potential trade of reliever Scott Proctor for infielder Ty Wigginton, the former Met whom the Yankees would use as a first baseman and utility player. The Yankees also spoke with the Dodgers about trading Proctor (or Kyle Farnsworth or Brian Bruney) for switch-hitting infielder Wilson Betemit, but the Dodgers turned them down, so Wigginton appears the more likely target.

Who would fill Proctor's spot in the bullpen? That's the interesting part. The Yankees have had internal discussions about a second-half promotion of hard-throwing prospect Joba Chamberlain from Double-A Trenton for use as a late-inning reliever, and they're considering moving Chamberlain up to Triple-A Scranton and using him as a reliever, possibly as soon as tomorrow, to prepare him for such as role.

METS BUZZ

The Orioles called the Mets to see if they'd be interested in trading for Steve Trachsel. Once the Mets got finished laughing, they told the Orioles that there was a player on their roster in whom they would be interested. The Mets and Orioles have had discussions about a trade that would bring former Met Jay Payton back to Flushing.

Concerned that Endy Chavez might not be back in time to help them in August, and concerned in general about the health and defensive abilities of corner outfielders Moises Alou and Shawn Green, the Mets are intrigued by the idea of adding Payton as a fourth outfielder and a late-inning defensive replacement. Payton is making $4.5 million this year and is signed for 2008 at $5 million. With Green and Alou bound for free agency, the Mets could be looking at him as a corner outfielder next year as well.

AROUND THE HORN

The Dallas Morning News reported that the Rangers are working on a contract extension with Eric Gagne. That could be posturing -- a way to scare teams into offering more in return for Gagne. But if it's not, and if they do lock him up, it's going to seriously alter the landscape of this deadline. Gagne is among the most desirable relief pitchers in a market in which everybody's looking for relief pitching. ... The Red Sox are still looking to pick up a bat, and have discussed possibilities such as Jermaine Dye and Reggie Sanders. Part of the reason for concern is the health of DH David Ortiz, whose knee has been bothering him all year and who hurt his shoulder in Friday's game.

Jose Molina for backup? **** YEAH. Jorge can catch 3 of 5 days a week, DH one day, and take a day off. He will last much longer that way.

Proctor for Wigginton? Don't know how much I dig this. Wiggy'll improve the bench, but Proctor is a bit of a high price for a utility man, methinks.

Joba to the Majors? OMG NO. Do not rush him; he has to be treated like Phil Hughes. Hughes got at least one year to tear up the minors (2006); Joba needs at least one year too. Call him up in May 2008, goddammit!

Also, who the **** is Kason Gabbard :(

The Yankees also spoke with the Dodgers about trading Proctor (or Kyle Farnsworth or Brian Bruney) for switch-hitting infielder Wilson Betemit, but the Dodgers turned them down, so Wigginton appears the more likely target.

Damn right, He's batting .242 now. .242!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Littlemind is a moron, Why does he keep tossing guys out there who have pitched 2/3 days straight. Why not call up a youngster instead of 42yr old Blowberto Hernandez. Eric Stults makes his 3rd career start and 2nd against the Mets, Expect it to be over early and Littlemind will use everyone in the bullpen again.

since it's early morning and there aren't more rumors coming in (let go of proctor? to tampa? why?) let's check in on the greatest topic in GAF (not neogaf, GAF) history.

Lester is finally back!

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_y...dQT0bYF?slug=txredsoxlester&prov=st&type=lgns

BOSTON (TICKER) -- Jon Lester, who has overcome a bout with cancer, is expected to be recalled by the Boston Red Sox and start at the Cleveland Indians on Monday.

The Red Sox, who own a 7 1/2-game lead over the New York Yankees in the American League East, will announce the move following Sunday's contest with the Chicago White Sox.

It will be the first start in the majors for the lefthanded Lester since he was scratched from an outing with the Oakland Athletics last August 27 with a sore back, a injury that eventually led to the discovery of cancer.

"His parents will be there," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. "So much went into this (decision). We've been (keeping) up on this kid all year. We're going to do what's best for us and what's best for him.

"We never let (emotion) get in the way of making the best baseball decision. We're real hopeful."

Lester, who was diagnosed with anaplastic large cell lymphoma last September, has had a steady road back following treatment in the offseason.

The 23-year-old did participate in spring training before starting the season on the disabled list. Following a successful rehab, Lester was removed from the DL on June 11 but remained in the minor leagues with the Class AAA Pawtucket Red Sox.

In 17 starts in the minors between Class A Greenville and Pawtucket, Lester was 4-5 with a 3.61 ERA.

"He's not a typical 23-year-old," Francona said. "He's the kind of kid who you tell him something like this, he's always ready to pitch. He doesn't lose focus.

"The clincher for (pitching coach) John Farrell and myself is when we said if we're 100 percent and we don't need another pitcher, should he be here on the roster? The answer was yes."

The young southpaw is expected to replace Julian Tavarez, who has been a disappointing 5-8 with 5.27 ERA in 18 appearances as the Red Sox's fifth starter.

Prior to this season, the 34-year-old Tavarez had just six starts in 273 games over the last four seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates, the St. Louis Cardinals and the Red Sox.

Poor Yankees thought they had a chance, too.

The Mariners are the worst team ever to be 15 games over .500, good thing the Angels decided to tank and the Twinkies decided to get hot.

Sigh, DFA Ellison, call up Adam Jones, bench Vidro!

And Felix, **** you. Also **** Toronto and **** the homeplate Umpire.

The Royals are about to take 2 of 3 from Detroit (this after taking 2 of 3 from Boston). Don't expect an easy series cos these guys are hitting right now...

ps: Oh my, Shelly frikken Duncan :D
