Mets! :lol

This was one of the biggest collapses in the history of baseball. This was CUBS LEVEL COLLAPSE. Perhaps the curse has shifted off the Cubbies to the Mets now!

Yeah right!

Phillies don't deserve it it's more Mets losing it than the Phillies winning.

STFU...we beat the NAts when we had too, you didnt. cry me a river. I see no other fan making these excuses.

Rockies take a 1-0 lead over D'Backs.

Padres losing to the Brewers 9-4.

It'd be nice to see Helton finally get into the playoffs after going through years of mediocrity. Would be a nice story.

What is this bet?

I bet the mets would win the division, and if they didn't, I'd have to use a mets avatar until the end of the playoffs.

But a Met fan has to make it. Someone step up to the plate!

Nice braves on TBS tribute going on now....

I'm looking forward to '08. Hopefully Hampton will be back in full force and Glavine makes his return. Throw in Texeria and you got a potent team.

PHILADELPHIA -- Pitchers and catchers don't report to spring training for another three weeks and exhibition games are still more than a month away. The Philadelphia Phillies already are talking about the postseason.

"I think we are the team to beat in the NL East -- finally."
-- Jimmy Rollins

"I think we are the team to beat in the NL East -- finally," shortstop Jimmy Rollins said Tuesday
. "But, that's only on paper."

The New York Mets cruised to the division title last season, finishing 12 games ahead of the Phillies. But Philadelphia overcame a poor start and a midseason roster purge to take the lead in the NL wild-card standings with only one week remaining in the regular season, only to fall short for the second straight year.

Now, the Phillies are quite confident they'll make the playoffs for the first time since 1993.

General manager Pat Gillick strengthened an already-solid starting rotation by adding Freddy Garcia and Adam Eaton in the offseason, and made minor moves to bolster an offense that led the league in runs scored.

"For the first time since I've been here, I can say I know we have the pitching to get us there," said Rollins, a three-time All-Star in six seasons in the majors. "Our offense has been productive the last couple years, but it's tough when it's 6-0 in the third inning."

Garcia was 17-9 with the Chicago White Sox last year and has won at least 16 games four times in his eight-year career. Eaton is a two-time 11-game winner with a higher upside if he avoids injuries that have plagued him in recent years.

Brett Myers (12-7, 3.91 ERA) and Cole Hamels (9-8, 4.08) might be the 1-2 punch atop the rotation while veteran Jamie Moyer (11-14, 4.30 with the Phillies and Seattle) rounds it out. The Phillies also have Jon Lieber (9-11, 4.93) as insurance should someone get hurt, though he could be traded for relief help.

"I feel we're a better team than we were this time last year because the top of the rotation is better," manager Charlie Manuel said.

The five starters entering last season were Lieber, Myers, Cory Lidle, Randy Wolf and Gavin Floyd. Strong pitching should take some pressure off the offense, though the bullpen still needs improvement.

Gillick failed in his quest to lure free agent Alfonso Soriano to Philadelphia, but NL MVP Ryan Howard, All-Star Chase Utley and Rollins give the Phillies one of the most formidable lineups in the league.

Inconsistent slugger Pat Burrell is back to play left field along with his hefty contract ($27 million owed over next two seasons). New third baseman Wes Helms provides more pop than Abraham Nunez, center fielder Aaron Rowand should produce better numbers if he stays healthy and right fielder Shane Victorino is an ideal No. 2 hitter.

"When you have good starting pitching, it makes your job a lot easier," said Howard, who had 58 homers and 149 RBIs last year.

Since last July, Gillick has changed the face of the franchise. Gone are Bobby Abreu, Mike Lieberthal, David Bell and Wolf. The laid-back personalities who dominated the clubhouse for years have been replaced by high-energy, fiery leaders like Utley, Rollins and Rowand.

"Talk is cheap," Rowand said. "I can't tell you if we're better than the Mets. All I know is we're going to go out and play with heart every single game."

Just had to :lol

Funny thing is the Philly pitching wasn't really good enough the whole year... The mets overall from August on was that bad.
I still don't understand why people got mad over that comment.
I don't remember the Mets really getting mad but the NY media and fans went rabid.

Meet the Mets, meet the Mets,
Step right up and greet the Mets.
Bring your kiddies, bring your wife,
Guaranteed to have the time of your life.
Because the Mets are really sockin' the ball,
Knockin' those home runs over the wall.
East side, West side, everybody's coming down,
To meet the M-E-T-S Mets, of New York town.

Oh, the butcher and the baker and the people on the streets,
Where did they go? To MEET THE METS!
Oh, they’re hollerin’ and cheerin’ and they’re jumpin’ in their seats,
Where did they go? To MEET THE METS!
All the fans are true to the orange and blue,
So hurry up and come on down -
‘cause we’ve got ourselves a ball club,
The Mets of New York town!

Give ‘em a yell! Give ‘em a ha

Nice to see the Phillies make it. I won't try and hop on the bandwagon at this late date but I do profess a love of an organization that drafted Tyson Brummett and Chase Utley.

"and this will be a good experience for them, and when we sip on a little champagne later on, it will be sweeter.”

-Willie Randolph

another great by-product of Willie's impending demise - i don't have to even think about those horrific Subway sandwich ads with him and Torre.

Went back and looked over the month of Septemebr for the Mets.

They started the month 8-1.
They finished the month 6-13.

Conversely, the Phillies started the month 1-5. They finished it 16-6.

Simply unreal...

Frankwoman, get your boy ItalPiazza31 over to the Braves Scout.com board. I got a little surprise for him. :D

They (Mets) lost the East back in Aug against the Phills 11-10. Thats when they needed to stop the bleeding. But we never gave up despite the bad pitching. You guys just...wow i dont know what to say. LOL

how can you say that? After that they went 10-2 and increased their lead again. They didn't lose it then! If you want a "stop the bleeding moment" they had about 4 this month, three are listed:

Phillies series in September
Nationals series at home last week.
Today.

yeah, i'm liking the gary cohen, ron darling and keith herandez combo in the booth as well.

Only bright spot this season. Love Keith.

If the Wilpons are willing to eat Willie's contract extension he's pretty much toast. It's not on him, the players showed no heart, but managers don't survive this kind of stuff. He's on his way out if the Wilpon's give the ok. I like Willie a lot but his team didn't play hard down the stretch. Mets played like the division was their predetermined right.

Delgado wanted a contract extension before the start of the season, he sure played like he wanted one. Show him the door. His comments, attitude, and play speak for itself. Trade Milledge, he's Gary Sheffield Jr. Kid has potential, but he's too busy showboating and talking up his game, rather than playing hard nosed baseball. I listened to his interview yesterday, and came away thinking that he's borderline delusional.

Humber, Pelfrey, Maine, Perez, and Martinez next year. We need a younger pitching staff. I would rather have these kids play then have 40 year old pitchers that play well for half a season and just break down towards the end of the season.

This team goes as far as Reyes does. He was mentally out of it the last 5 weeks. I've never seen a player reach such a peak and hit rock bottom that fast. He was arguably an MVP candidate going into the All-Star break, and now fans want him shopped around for more pitching. Reyes seemed disinterested going down the stretch, he played half assed baseball. Hopefully he get his head clear and returns to form.

Hopefully we bounce back next season.

MEMO TO ME:

Memo to me: Was I ever wrong about the NL East and the Mets and the Phighting Phils.

In August I wrapped up the NL East in a nice little package for the Mets and said the race was unofficially over. I wrote these words:

Memo to Jimmy Rollins: The Best Team Won.

Here we are three days to go in the regular season and the race is just beginning.

The Phillies have overcome numerous injuries and no matter what happens these final three days, they have shown the hearts of champions and for that they should be congratulated.

The Mets have collapsed – perhaps the greaTest collapse in baseball history considering the teams that they’ve lost to down the stretch, and if you are going to be wrong, I can live with the fact that it took a colossal collapse to be wrong – while the Phillies have shown incredible heart and fortitude, led by Jimmy Rollins.

It was Rollins who said the Phils were the team to beat in the NL East over the winter. He was right. I was wrong. I’ve always loved Rollins approach to the game – he is Philadelphia’s Derek Jeter – and he is putting up MVP numbers.

To me, Rollins is the NL MVP. His defense is remarkable and his hitting is Captain Clutch. And his words fired up his teammates. He led by example in so many ways.

The Phillies have once again shown why baseball is the greatest game. It’s not over til it’s over. Once again that lesson was driven home – to me and everyone else in New York and especially to those in the Mets clubhouse.

Over the winter, it turns out, the Phillies were the team to beat in the NL East.

And with three days left in the season, they are still the team to beat in the NL East. Rollins was right. I was wrong. The Phillies are what being a winning team is all about.

they just got lucky Mets played bad baseball at the wrong time. I still think Mets are the better team but got cold at the wrong time.
Again, it's not an insult to Phillies fanns (I don't get why they see it as one) but if the Mets bullpen doesn't blow 4 leads of 4+ runs this month their great play would've been for the wild card. Again they played amazing ball down the stretch but the proof is there.

The Mets spit the bit during the long week of failure in that Braves series - swept by the Phils, losses to the Nats. Right there, the spark the Phillies needed was kindled. The Mets got down and laid down. Frank, can I call your sister's phone? :lol

Even after the Phillies sweep they had a cushion. It goes back to last Wednesday.

Free country, never said you couldn't.

i don't know about that. pre-season i though the Phillies were going to be a major hurdle the entire season long. even after that horrible opening slump they had, they bounced back and really peaked at the right time. the Mets were undone by what i feared the most all season long - horrible pitching that seemed to self-perpetuate itself the worst it got. we didn't deserve to back into the playoffs after the last few weeks, and the Phillies are on such a roll right now that they have an excellent shot of making the WC.

oh, and fuck the braves.

Hey frank, before you leave...Wanna take back that comment about pissing off the Marlins? :D

Also Wagner's comments about Willie and the pitching coach = awesome. Hope they show that fuckin cancer the door.
