The redsox are scaring me. I really don't think we're this good, and pretty sure we're going to crash sometime in a month or two. Hitters are going to figure out Daisuke out, Curt is gonna have a heart attack, Wakefields arm will fall of, and Beckett will keep getting blisters (oh yea he's a tough guy). Our hitting is still questionable besides Youk and Ortiz. But still, 13.5 baby. 13.5.

There's nothing to be scared about. This team is good. Scratch that. This team is ****ing great.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the Yanks in October, but if they're there I doubt it'll be because they caught us.

If the Red Sox go .500 the rest of the year, the Yankees will need to go 70-43 (.619) in order to tie us for the division lead.

If the Red Sox go .550, the Yanks need to go 76-37 (.669) to tie.

If the Red Sox go .600, the Yanks need to go 81-32 (.718) to tie.

The Red Sox are on pace for 114 wins.

The chances of that continuing are minimal.

The... April and May sox? Doesn't have the same ring as April-Rod, I'm sorry. :lol

For every Sox player that is likely to regress (Youk, Lowell, Wakefield) there is another player this is likely to get better (Manny, Drew, Matsuzaka). Theres a deep bench, an okay bullpen that can be upgraded from the minor leagues, and a good front office to fix any major holes. This team is for real.

I think 102 wins.

If I move up to third in posting I'll be in the same place as the White Sox.

Too bad that's also where they are likely to finish =(

Hey, even if the Twins wake up and plug young talent in where they have shitty veterans you can take heart that the White Sox will never be last place in the division. God Bless the Royals and the Devil Rays, Rangers, Pirates, Nats, and Rockies for that matter.

WOOOT! Martin! Delivers with a RBI single.

Ethier you POS nice DP!

=(

=) Schmidt to begin rehab assignment on Wednesday. Dodgers need to drop a 3rd baseman or Brady Clark and use Kemp as the Defensive replacement late in games.

Penny is freaking cruising through the innings. :)

Will Schmidt even pitch before the Allstar break? I wonder.

Edit: Pierre with 3 Doubles and a Triple WOWEE!

Big game for Pierre.. 3 doubles and a triple. How the heck did Penny not score from 2nd if Pierre got a double? :lol Love how he's helping himself in the 7th inning.. Penny is BALLIN!

Wow, another 2 hit game for the Youk.

geez i would hate to be a catcher that catches sheets, almost impossible to throw out baserunners.

Not sure, I'm just hoping he comes back at all. He's gotten his speed back so it's been good news so far.

The Sox are currently playing almost dead on with their Pythagorean win estimates (based on Runs Scored and Runs Allowed).

If you assume there will be some offensive correction for Youkilis, Lowell, and 'Tek you'd then have to assume that there wouldn't be an opposite correction for Manny, Lugo, Drew, and Crisp.

Matsuzaka's ERA actually paints him as a worse pitcher than he's played at. His peripherals are very good and he's had some bad fielding and luck (BABIP) behind him. Schilling and Beckett are actually pitching to the level they're currently playing at. Wakefield has been very lucky, but even a corrected ERA would put him in the high 3's or low 4's. If you assume there is some correction amongst the top 4 its equally valid to assume that the improvement Lester brings over Tavarez will offset it.

That said, I personally think Matsuzaka will only get better as he adjusts the the MLB and 'Tek gets a better understanding of his stuff. Hitters won't get used to him. He throws 7 or 8 pitches at an MLB level, but he and 'Tek basically pick the two or three best each start to pair with his fastball. That makes him an entirely unknown quantity every time out. Will it be 4 seam, 2 seam, curve, and slider? Maybe 4 seam, vulcan change, and a splitter? He can mix all his pitches in any combination and even go to ones he hasn't used all night in a pinch. He's not a guy you can get the "book" on unless he starts tipping pitches or shows some other major chink in his armor.

I also don't think Youk's current level is all fallacy. He's probably not a .980 to 1.000 OPS guy like he is right now, but it wouldn't surprise me if he's a consistent .880 to .900 OPS with a killer OBP and maintains his stellar 1B defense (has yet to make an error this year, streak goes back to July of last year).

'Tek is also not so much playing hot as playing like the 'Tek of old before injuries and overwork (thanks WBC) derailed his '06 season.

Lowell will likely regress, he's a hot starter, but Manny, Drew, Lugo, and Crisp are likely to improve.

The FO has built a very deep 40 man roster. Lots of good AAA starters to call on, lots of middle level bullpen depth and 4th OF types as well. Team that with a bench featuring a solid veteran in Cora, two hitters who could start on many teams in Pena and Hinske, and a solid backup with an ok bat in 'Belli and you see why this team is doing so well.
