I disagree with the Tex for Hughes comment. Tex kinda is overrated imo.

Tex is WAY overvalued in this deal. Dude's slugging is down nearly 50 pts from two and three years ago. His OBP has gone up 20 pts though, which boosts his OPS/+.

To me, he is not worth this package, but he is there for 1.5 years.
 
Ugh. Why do people keep saying the Braves got jobbed? These guys are all P R O S P E C T S, who, with the exception of Salty, are years away from the majors. Also, the Braves got a pretty good lefthanded reliever in the deal. Those guys straight up will cost you at least a B grade prospect themselves.

1. The Rockies have already been reported as interested in Farnsworth, and they do need bullpen help with Fuentes hurt (again). Kyle just has to go somewhere; I don't care what for. Ideally, we'd move him to a NL team so he can't somehow hurt us later. The Rockies showed interest, so...yeah.

2. Kei Igawa is an inexpensive (only $4m) young pitcher, and left-handed at that. He could easily be valuable to a team hungry for pitching like say...the Pirates. Igawa definitely has value enough to get guys like that. They aren't exactly ace relievers; they just add needed depth. We got Chris Britton, the Orioles' excellent rookie setup man, for Jaret Wright...so it's not impossible. Really, you figure you could do something similar to what the Yankees did getting Esteban Loaiza for Jose Contreras (except Igawa is infinitely cheaper, so it's not a salary dump-type thing).

4. The Yankees have a wealth of prospects, particularly above-average pitching prospects. They should be used to fill Yankee needs. Wilson Betemit would be nice to have on the bench. I'd move 1 or 2 of our B-level arms/prospects for him. Would that be enough? I dunno...but I'm not talking in terms of that anyway.

5. If the Yankees offered Hughes for almost anyone being moved in this league (within reason; obviously Pujols or something would be :lol), someone would bite - hurt or not. The other guys have potential to be like that or close, too. Like I've said before in this thread...if even 2 of the 8 or so really good pitching prospects the Yankees have pan out to their potential, it's great times for the next decade or so. No more mortgaging the future for the present. Keep the YANKIDS movement going, Cashman!

The Dodgers better not deal for Scott Proctor. What would be the use? Randy Wolf has been shutdown indefinitely when he suffered a setback. They ain't going anywhere with Tomko and Hendrickson as starters.

Appearently, Salty was on XM radio saying that he was never comfortable at first.

Now that I've had more time to digest this trade, I think I can live with it. I hate that we had to give up Salty, but he had no place to play. McCann is by all accounts the better defensive player and can rake when healthy. Salty's departure also opens the door for Kala Kahuie to be the 1B of the future. Elvis is another guy that has been hyped to hell. His hype kinda reminds me of the hype surrounding Betemit (a switch hitting ARod LOLz). I am utterly indifferent to the other two guys..

The clock is ticking on Smoltz. I believe that he and Huddy would be a formidable combo in the playoffs. You just gotta get there and adding a guy like Tex in the middle of the line up is certainly one way to do it.

Now, if we can get Dotel, then I'll be extremely pleased.

You think the Yankees would just eat the 26 million dollar posting fee they paid out for Igawa after half a season? They would certainly really want to pass some of that on to any team he was traded to.

hmm i think i would probably trade Lillibridge since we have escobar. Davies I think can still turn it around and we need as much starting pitching depth as we can get. How long is dotel signed for anyway?

That cake's already gone, so they can't worry about it now. The $26m is a posting fee; you pay that money outright and upfront just to talk/negotiate with the player. The $52M the Red Sox paid for Matsuzaka is the same way, too. Once you pay that fee, you can negotiate a contract. In the case of Kei Igawa, it's a 5-year $20m contract; this is the figure to mull over if you're trading him - or trading for him. He's a cheap young lefty; what is that worth in this league? If you'll pay $4m for Joel Pineiro, or 55M to Gil Meche, Igawa can possibly be considered a bargain (since he performs similarly to them) if you want to try to fix him.

2. Kei Igawa has very little trade to no trade value.

4. I'm pretty sure Betemit was freely available before the season, so getting legit prospects for him would be a steal for the Dodgers.

5. I don't think you can trade injured players was the point I was getting at. Besides Phil Hughes is the new Rich Harden.

Looks like the Mets got Castillo. I like this trade, personally. We need a second baseman, and he's good on defense. He'll also make a good number 2 hitter in the lineup, since Willie doesn't seem to want to use Lo Duca in that function anymore.

They talked about this on BBTN last night. Platoon was the answer.
 
Jermaine Dye has a lovely 95 OPS+ this year. Perhaps they could platoon him with JD of the 92 OPS+ and together they would have someone with the offensive capability of Hideki Irabu.

Wow, Braves get a middle of the lineup bat and two top relievers. They're definitely going for it now, just gotta hope the rotation holds up and the Mets keep sucking I guess.

I don't think so. I know the deadline isn't until tomorrow, but I don't see how you can't say that the Braves aren't going to be the most improved team after these trades.

You're probably right. I'm just a little biased towards Castillo. Always loved his style of play.......tried to emulate it as much as I could in college.
 
Kind of sad about Castillo being gone, but I think Bartlett could mature into that role. I'll be all for the trade assuming we can snag a good (infield) bat tomorrow.

Castillo has been a GREAT tablesetter for the Twins the last couple years. He's a great bunter, he hustles down the line, and he plays great D. I'm sad to see him go.
