Just something from left field, Would you consider Greg Maddux's 1995 season the best ever for a pitcher given the conditions?

I mean, look at the league batting average that year. There were many .300 hitters and we were just entering the "juice ball" era, with many 40+ home run hitters. And here's a guy who had a 19-2 record, 1.63 ERA and only 23 walks in 200+ innings.

Martinez. 2000.

You might want to look at Pedro Martinez's 1999 stats. Which is the peak years of the juiced ball and pitched in the superior league (AL).

edit: Ya, 2000 was even better.

who are those guys? they aren't on the braves? :lol but yeah it does suck, I'm getting tired of this mediocre baseball that they are playing lately.

Its actually hard to find pictures like this with the Braves being good for so many years.
I dunno who those guys are either.
I hope one of them is Brian Jordan though - that guy killed us like 2 years in a row when we were in the hunt for a wild card.:/

Speaking of incredible years pitching ... a few oldtimer Indians fans informed me about a guy named "Sudden" Sam McDowell.

The topic was brought up about how crappy the run support for CC has been this year and they laid out his 1968 statline.

37 Games

11 Complete Games (3 Shutouts)
283 Strikeouts
1.81 ERA
1.04 WHIP

His record: 15-14 :lol

My God -that type of run support is disgusting.

I think it is: left to right- Dwayne Wise, Wilson Betimet, Nick Green. Or something like that, they were on a division champ team though. 2004?

Kazmir hurls gem
Scott Kazmir pitched into the ninth inning and fanned 13 Oakland hitters in a 14-3 win. The southpaw speaks with FSN after his outstanding outing.
Kazmir fanned a franchise-record 13 and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays routed Oakland Athletics 14-3 Saturday night.

"I really just want to be in the game as deep as I can," said Kazmir, who set the record by striking out Shannon Stewart to end the eighth inning. "I only knew I had (the record) once I looked at the scoreboard to look for my pitch count. And I saw it and it felt good."

Akinori Iwamura, Carlos Pena and Brendan Harris each had three of the Devil Rays' season-high 20 hits. Tampa Bay's 14 runs tied a season high.

Kazmir (10-8) struck out the side in the first on 12 pitches and recorded his first six outs on strikeouts. He retired 16 straight from the second to the seventh inning and pitched eight-plus innings, allowing three runs, five hits and no walks.

"He's obviously a good pitcher and then he had a good night, too," Oakland manager Bob Geren said. "His ball just seemed to be jumping at the hitters. His fastball was very alive, and it was just one of those nights."

M

Kazmir's 13 Ks were a career high, one more than the previous team mark shared by teammates James Shields and Dan Wheeler, now a reliever. Wheeler was a starter in 1999 for Tampa Bay.

Kazmir also holds the club record for strikeouts in a career and season.

"That was a great performance," Devil Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "My goodness, from the first pitch he was pretty much on his game. I think he's pretty much pitched like this since the All-Star Break."

Oakland designated hitter Mike Piazza was impressed as well.

"He just came out throwing strikes," said Piazza, who struck out twice. "He was getting strike one and expanding the zone and bringing 95 mph -- tough to catch up to."

The Devil Rays have won two in a row over the A's by a combined score of 26-5.

Oakland's Joe Blanton (11-9), who was 3-0 in his last four starts, pitched five innings, struck out five and gave up five runs and seven hits.

"They've looked locked in the past couple of days," Blanton said. "They've got confidence over there right now and they're running with it."

The A's are 13-15 when Blanton starts and fell a game below .500 (65-66) just two days after going above .500 for the first time since July 7.

Jonny Gomes hit a two-run homer to put the Devil Rays up 2-0 in the second inning and Pena added a run-scoring double in the third reach 83 RBIs for the season, a new career high for him.

Harris' two-run double in Tampa Bay's three-run seventh made it 9-0.

"Our bullpen had a tough time tonight," Geren said. "We couldn't stay away from the big inning."

Well good for the kid. He's so fucking nasty and is so young. If he stays healthy one wonders how good he can be.

And on another note - Jim Duquette and Al Leiter both need to be castrated.
One was a terrible GM,the other thought he could tell the Mets front office who should be traded away. I guess Leiter felt abit too threatened when Kazmir had that swagger around him.

:/

Kazmir hurls gem etc etc his pitches are light years ahead of ya

What a game he pitched tonight. He has been lights out since the All Star Break, which is great to see coming from such a young ace. 13 punchouts is also a great accomplishment. I remember seeing a stat last year that said Kazmir was second only to Sanatana in K/9IP.

I always hate to look back on past events like this and whine and moan about them, but that was hands down the worst trade in the history of sports. Ok, thats a little exagerration, but even disregarding the fact that Kazmir is an ace at age 23, Victor Zambrano sucks and was not worth anyone. Except Mike Pelfry. At least the Jim Duquette era is long over.

Any links to this Al Leiter telling the Mets to trade Kazmir thing?
Shut it, Yankee. He will be vindicated when Kazmir throws such a devastating slidepiece the torque rips the meat off his shoulder, searing every tendon and sinew in his elbow.

Also, Leiter alone wasn't part of that decision. John Franco, Todd Zeile, Rick Peterson, and a minor league coach made that call.

Don't worry, a sweep at the stadium will go a long way in making them reach that .500 mark ;)

Currently the only team above .600. They'd have to lose 28 games without a win to hit .500 at this point. Not happening. :D

Matsui's little stunt was pretty terrible, but Hughes wasn't great early either. I mean, he's learning. But we don't have time for that.

I'm pretty nonplussed on the whole thing right now.

Time for the return of Kei Lolgawa?
