I think that was the trainers decision, they wanted him to take it easy and not aggravate any of his previous leg injuries.

Also I don't see why Gibbons didn't leave Stairs in the game, I can see his justification as Johnson is good defensively and he was coming up the next inning, but right now Johnson is just a liability at the plate and Stairs is our best hitter right now.
