Was debating on why a big man that is as good as Oden is so rare and you should pick him over a wing player:

But Kobe still has to win anything without Shaq. Lebron has to win anything -- period.

Also, remember, the only championship Portland has won was on the shoulders of two big men - Maurice Lucas and Bill Walton.

See where I'm going with this?

Spurs? Duncan and Robinson.

Lakers? Shaq.

Houston? Olajuwan.

Lakers? Kareem.

The only team in the past two decades to really succeed on the shoulders of a guard were the Bulls with Jordan -- and that team was loaded with talent and had the best player this sport will probably ever see.

A team that wins it all on the shoulders of a guard/small forward is an exception to the rule, not the rule.

Plus the fact that Portland can easily get a SF through trades or FA. Two are available this off season: Marion and Rashard Lewis.

Yeah.. But if they can't unload Zach for some outside shooting.. might be a mess.

That's a good sign for the Bobcats

They have 4 quality big men

watch them draft Noah because he won NCAA championship ala Omeka and May

I hope the Jazz get the same kind of homecooking the Spurs got tonight. That was terrible refereeing

I didn't watch the game, but Utah only had 18 fouls as a team the entire game. I'm relatively sure that wasn't home cooking.

Out of curiousity is there a reason the Jazz only played 8 players all game?

It'll be easy to unload Zach now, because no GM likes the prospect of facing this young core (Zach is only 25):

Roy
Zach
LMA
Oden

I still think they would get eaten up by pick and rolls and open 3 point shooting.. but yeah they be'd the biggest, meanest front the NBA has seen in a long time if not ever

How the hell does Harpring get 20+ minutes when he didn't do a single damn thing?

Besides, if Portland takes Oden, there is no urgency to unload Zach with LaMarcus waiting in the wings. Imagine Zach's stock next season if he continues what he did this year and keeps his nose clean?

Also, with Oden/LMA/Joel protecting the paint (Joel is an incredibly underrated defensive center, despite his awful offensive game), they can cover up Zach's defensive woes.

Man, Portland is in such an amazing position.

There was no home cooking. The Spurs D just didn't let the Jazz get anything easy and only Boozer and Williams were good enough to do something for their team.

holy shit...another thing i just noticed...

bob hill getting shitcanned in 96...spurs pick up tim duncan in the ensuing draft...

fast foward to 2007 and bob hill gets shitcanned again and the sonics will either pick up oden or durant

:lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol

he'll probably still find a way to blame popovich

they played a great game.... the second quarter did them in again... around the time where the dumb calls happened... i even posted after a couple earlier in the game.. momentum changing no calls and stupid ones... we dont have to go back and forth with this.. we will see how it plays out..

Atl, memphis, and maybe even boston are going to make the mistake of passing on Yi. Boston will probably take Marcus Williams out of arizona because the Danny System™ tells them to.

Definitely. I believe both games have been called fairly and even with the results I don't see the Jazz going down easily. They're a really tough team similar to the Spurs that even if they get down big they don't start looking for excuses, they just go to work, even if in the end they can't pull it off. Both teams a reflection of two great coaches.

I hope the Spus can muster the energy and poise to pull out Game 3, because I don't want them to give the Jazz wings. It could get ugly.

omg, as a sonics fan i feel like this is the best thing that happened to the franchise since the finals in 96.

last time we had the #2 pick we took GP. look how that turned out:D

interesting thing: i'm also a titans fan. miserable team, gets good draft, other team is stupid enough to pass on a star, we get a gem (vince young). now this with :D my other team.

so blazers, stop stealing our people (nate, roy, martell) and let us pick oden.

i'm feeling a sam bowie deja vu.

make it happen blazers!

The Pistons also won without a dominate big man. I agree with your point, but don't forget: premier center does not mean automatic championship. Just ask the Knicks.

IMO Brewer is the third best SF in the draft. Wright and Green are better.

Edit: Ewing was not as dominant as he could have been because of leg injuries. The shit he was doing before the injuries was nuts. He was also in his prime during the Jordan era.

What?

Detroit is a HUGE team. Sheed/Wallace is what I consider a "big man."

Maybe I should change that to "small ball doesn't win rings."

Bulls were a huge team, too.

Brewer is a freakish defender. That alone makes him the best pick at the position (unless you're the Suns lolololololol).

Believe me, I know. :(

His list included championship teams and their hall of fame centers. That isn't the case with any of Detroit's championships. Wallace, 'Sheed, Laimbeer and Edwards were all good and all big but none of them could be considered great.

Having a player like Oden is a huge first step, though.

Offensively, I'd say you were pretty close, but Brewer is a defensive monster which ups his value bigtime, IMO.

True he his the second best defender in the draft (behind Oden), but the other two guys are better athletes and more skilled on the offensive end. Both are also solid defenders. The team that picks Brewer will have to work on him with his midrange game and ball handling(which is very suspect).

I think Wright out of Kansas is the type of player that people will pay to see. He is a sick offensive player. If the suns let Marion walk they will probably pick Wright.

True, but I have to say this again: Exception, not the rule.

Not really following the logic? Of course any team with the number one needs to really consider picking Oden no matter who is on their roster..

No amount of big men would help Zach's D.. with your lineup of ROY/Zach/LMA/Oden where does Zach play? Sf??? Any team that could pick and roll would go off.. Zach couldn't take other 3s straight up.. and after that teams would pick and roll away on the other big men.. And lack of outside shooting hurts post players... if they take Oden they should trade one of their big men.. and I bet it will be Zach because you don't need his bad shot selection (which will get worse most likely because Oden will take about half of his touches)

Portland is in a good position time to wheel and deal like last year without blowing up team too much...

HOLY CRAP. I was in class during the lottery and my phone started going crazy from texts and phone calls.. what a great day for Blazer fans. I was begging for Portland to tank the season.. but it looks like it doesn't pay to do that (Poor Celtics).

I think Portland has their future set out for them right now. The only position that needs to be filled is SF. And from what people have said, it looks like Rashard Lewis is their prime target. But even though he's injury prone.. I WOULD LOVEEE for them to go after Gerald Wallace. Wallace teamed with Aldridge and Oden would be contested every time.

BUT if they do sign a SF who's potentially an all-star, Portland is going to need to make quite a few trades and decisions. Udoka who played very well for a player that no one expected much from is a FA, and I would like for Portland to re-sign him. But also they have Travis Outlaw who's a restricted FA, and I think he needs to be re-signed. Which leaves Martell Webster who was the 6th overall pick two years ago. I don't count Miles, cause god knows they can't do anything with him.

All and all great day to be a Blazer fan. I'm curious to what the rumors about the Sonics are. Considering many believe the upcoming season will be the last one in Seattle, it'll be interesting to see what happens up there.

Heh. Sorry, I should have clarified my stance on Zach. I think Portland should trade Zach now -- it's really easy for them to do it for a SF (Rashard?). I was just saying that with Oden/LMA/Joel, Zach's defensive woes can be covered up and his stock can go up even further. LMA would come off the bench, like he did this year.

But yea, Zach is extremely expandable now.

CNNSI's Ian Thomsen:

The Boston Celtics can claim they are cursed after tumbling in the lottery for the second time in a decade. But the truth, confirmed yet again by Tuesday's miserable result, is that they never should have traded for Sebastian Telfair.

That deal on draft day last year sent the eventual rights to Brandon Roy onto Portland. Consider the ensuing chain of events. Roy became the Rookie of the Year who helped the Trail Blazers win a surprising 32 games this season, earning them the No. 6 position going into the lottery -- which in turn earned them the No. 1 pick overall. Would the Blazers have won as many as 32 games with Telfair on their roster instead of Roy? The answer is a solid NO. It can now be said that the acquisition of Roy, more than any other move, helped bring Greg Oden to Portland.

THANK YOU BOSTON!

Yeah well, I haven't been in the NFL thread for quite awhile. Just felt like I had to throw one in there.

Make sure your new arena has a catchy name. Key Arena was good. These new arena names suck. Energy Solutions? American Airlines? Toyota Center?

We need cool names like "The Summit" and "Great Western Forum".
