Official 480p PS2 Games List (for use on PS3)

Because PS2 emulation seems to differ wildly from game to game on the PS3, I thought it would help if there was some kind of list we could reference before buying new or old games for use on our PS3s. One of the problems I'm running into is that a lot of games that actually do support 480p, don't publicly advertise that fact. For instance, I just bought RE4 and I had to read through the user's manual to figure out how to enable 480p mode. Progressive Scan support isn't even listed on the back of the game! Apparently a lot of PS2 games require the user to press triangle and X as the PS2 logo screen comes up. Another strange thing I've run into is that some interlaced titles actually display fine on the PS3. The Warriors and GTA: Vice City have no emulation problems at all. They look fine. Jak 3 in interlaced mode also looks great. I'll start a short list of games that I own and what I've run into.

480p Titles - enabled in game options

-God of War - listed on back
-Jak 2 - listed as 480p
-Jak 3 - listed as 480p
-Shadow of the Colossus - not listed
- Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal - listed
-Resident Evil 4 - not listed - only enabled at logo screen
- Black - listed as 480p
- Mortal Kombat: Armageddon - 480p enabled in game options
-

Unaffected 480i titles

I'll keep updating this list as we get more feedback from more Gaffers. I'm sure you guys have some massive PS2 libraries. Now get to work.

Probably a nub question, but if I am currently playing a PS3 on a 480i TV, do I have to worry about compatibility issues at all? Will these games run fine?

No, it'll still look bad.

just bought ZOE 2 brand new sealed @ 40 freakin buks to play on my ps3

i hope its will be not that bad looking but i will still enjoy it

Do you actually play anything new?

No matter how much one loves an old machine, once the support dries up, you're gonig to be left without new software.

You posted that to somehow slam the image quality of PS2 games (which isn't a problem if you own a good display), but screw that, we have next gen now. DC, PS2, XBOX, Wii, Gamecube all suffer from AWFUL image quality next to XBOX360 and PS3.

Are you really still playing 5 year old games in low resolution, 16-bit color and bragging about it? Join the next generation and buy a 360 or something.

I just put in my Vice city and you were right it did look fine. But Im wondering, why does this one look ok in 480i but the other 480i games dont?

Well if it helps Gradius 5, Contra:Shattered Soldier and Silpheed(ugh) are unaffected 480i titles.

Tekken 5 also has 480p enabled/disabled in the game options.

There are plenty of 480i games that look just fine. It all depends on the resolution used. There were no real standards on PS2 when it came to resolution, it would seem, a many developers opted for stuff like 512x512 (high vertical resolution at the expense of less important horizontal).

Red Faction is another 480i title that works fine and I know there are others out there as well.

Heh, I remember when we were first discussing this problem and I tossed Star Ocean 3 in and it looked just fine. I was confused as to why FFXII and other titles looked horrible but SO3 looked fine and I didn't even know that SO3 can be played in 480p.

Thanks dark10x. This thread will bookmarked for future reference then. I would like to know more 480i titles that look fine, atleast until Sony fixes this issue that is.

Yeah, I'm only about 2 hours in now and it hardly bothers me anymore once my eyes adjusted to it.

man, I wish the PS3 upconverted ps2 games to 720p like Xbox 360 does :(
Yeah, I REALLLY wanted to see that feature...

I'm hoping that, down the line, they start to add such a thing for some titles. I appreciate FULL compatibility, but the feature is nowhere near as exciting as what you get on 360 (which has terrible compatibility, but awesome results).

Fortunately, I really didn't buy any US PS2 games in 2006 (all Japanese), so it was really a non issue for me as I had to use my Japanese system anyways. Still, it would have been great to experience older games in higher resolutions.

I can understand why it isn't included, however, as PS2 games were terribly inconsistent (unlike XBOX games which were almost always 640x480 progressive).

Like Faffy have stated many times over, this thread should be retitled "Official 640 horizontal resolution PS2 Games list (for use on PS3)"

I hope Sony fixes this soon... and I'd imagine (hope) they are working on it, since it seems to be one of the largest vocal complaints about the PS3 now.

These damn PS2 games should start looking good on my 1080p TV ASAP! Man... I still remember the hints of 'upconversion' with the BC... -_-

It will be more than "fixed" (as in 720p and maybe even 1080p rendering) as soon as Sony gets the promised software BC up and running, but probably not till then.

You mean 480 since in 480p You have 640 VERTICAL lines and 480 HORIZONTAL lines

Not necessarily. You can have 640x240 or variety of other reses with 640 horizontal lines.

I got an HD monitor for Christmas and I was just looking at RE4 to see if it had a 480p option and didn't see it anywhere... guess I should look harder!

Try the instruction manual.

Shog is right...the first number is the horizontal number. For instance, 16x9 tv ratio...the width(horizontal) is obviously more than the height. What Shog is saying is that even if a game is technically 480p...if the first number isn't the "standard" 640, there could be some rendering issues. Like for example, GT4...it has a 1080i mode, but it's not 1920x1080i(i'm not quite sure what the horizontal res is though...anyone?)

Shogmaster said:
You are wrong. 240 is the vertical res in that case.

640*240 means :

640 vertical lines for the horizontal resolution
240 horizontal lines for the vertical resolution

Get your facts straight, thanks.

I just played Shinobi and it looks better than I remember it looking on my ps2. No problems with the jaggies from what I could tell.

How do all the 2D games look?

Someone test Marvel vs Capcom 2, Capcom vs SNK 2, Guilty Gear X2, Street Fighter Alpha Anthology, Street Fighter Anniversary Collection, Metal Slug 3,4,5, the King of Fighters games, Gradius V, Contra SS, and some PS1 games (Castlevania SOTN)

Street Fighter Alpha Anthology is 480p by pressing the triangle and X buttons after the Playstation 2 logo at startup.
