Official DS Lite North American Launch Thread!

I made a huge mistake in trying to get a Lite at Wal-Mart. I went in a round 7 last night asking when I could get a DS Lite. The guy in electronics said "we have them in the back, we can't sell them until mindnight though." So flashfoward to 11 45. I go to Wal-Mart, and after spending half an hour searching the store for someone to help me, the guy says they don't have any in back. So maybe, the guy who talked to me was just confused. Except there were two other people there who had been told that they would be available at midnight as well. Eventually 3 people start looking, and after 40 minutes come back saying "I don't know what to tell you." They said to give them our numbers, and they would call us when the electronics manager got in at 7. We pointed out that we should get some sort of discount or something for being lied to then kept waiting for so long, but they "couldn't do anything about that, sorry."

I couldn't find any magazine racks to tip over on the way out, but I managed to topple a poster rack, shelf of candles, and a bed sheet display. That helped a little. Oh, and they never called me back in the morning like they said they would. I hate that goddamn store so much, and I swear I'll stop shopping there once their return policy isn't so easy to take advantage of.

Trust me, they have them. They just couldn't find them. When Halo 2 came out they "lost" those for about 30 minutes at my local store.

That's why you don't shop at Walmart. The $2 saved isn't worth the shithole atmosphere.

Thanks Mej, that's what I needed to hear :)

I feel better already.

I'll give them a call on Monday.

I'm having more fun with Brain Age than I rightfully should

No problem. Then again, I live in NY and their returns and processing center is in PA, IIRC. So YMMV.

The difference between the original DS and DSL is amazing. DSL looks so much better. Might have to go shopping for one today.

They were out of them in the Best Buy near my area, but I snagged one at Target this morning. There were plenty, but the store had been open only for 40min :P I picked up 3 games too, New Super Mario Bros., MP: Hunters, and Mario&Luigi: Partners in Time.

I eyeballed it for any screen defects and I'm letting it charge now, so i haven't tried a game yet. The most striking thing is how small it is! :D

Bit of a let down that there's no thumb strap though. But then again, I never used it much anyway.

How's it selling?

How many were shipped?

can I get a DSlite without any stupid bundle? the ebgames website and gamestop all have bundles, apperantly you can't buy the dslite only. **** >_<

hopefully that's not the case in-store.

I bought Brain-Age less than a month ago, so I was able to return the free copy I got today to Best Buy for $20 refund. I used the extra cash to pick up the white version of Gamestop's corny "Valu Pak":

Not the greatest looking accessories (and they say "Gamestop" all over them), but a decent enough bundle. I mostly just wanted a carrying sleeve and cigarette adaptor, but the screen wipes and game case are a nice addition as well.

why not go to best buy or circuit city and get the dsl and free brain age?
because there no best buy or circuit city here.

what about costco? they always have good deals.

My poor manager... I went by just as we opened and about 6 people were picking theirs up (including myself). After I got mine, two more came to pick theirs up too.

:lol Considering how many people on the forum got them at midnight without any problems.... who ****ing cares?'

I actually managed to score NSMB for only $20 thanks to clueless Wal-Mart employees. You guys not going there are missing out. :lol

I guess this is where we post our launch stories, then? From my Nintendo World Store thread.

BOOM BABY!

Tis like being struck blind upon beholding the awesome visage of G-d, and thanking Him for his attention!

That is the DSLite.

Ok, so Nintendo's street party was all kinds of lame, and the Hot97 DJs sucky as can be. 3 hours of standing around listening to idiots attempt to answer pathetically easy Nintendo trivia, in order to receive nasty Hot97 loot as a reward.

(And if you hear some raucously shouting out vastly superior Nintendo trivia questions, such as "When will Pokemon's Misty be legal?", well, that was me!

Still, I had a great time thanks to a very fun crowd I happened to be with. Got there around 5 to 9pm, was roughly number 70 in line, and I did manage to walk out with a brand new DSL (no dead pixels!), a(nother) free copy of Brain Age (marked with a gold sticker saying 'Free Gift From Nintendo - GDC 06'), a neato little DSL case, and some silly Hot97 swag (so yeah, I did get a trivia question right)!

The free pizza and cold water bottles were nice!

Edit - I was not the uber geek fully decked out in Link garb. I was the dude with the Israeli-flag-pinned Jansport, black leather jacket, and Israeli police blue t-shirt.

Naw. My original DS had a dead pixel. I called NoA, and within 3 business days of that call, I got a new DS from them in exchange. They sent me a pre-paid box to return my old DS (no games, no stylus, no packaging, just the system), processed it, and sent me a new one (with extra stylus).

The entire process took three freakin' business days. Didn't cost me a cent, either. Very impressive.

This is good to know. Did you register it first? I love the system, brightness if great, design is amazing, but a big pixel stuck on the top makes me not even play it today. I've never had a screen problem with a handheld before.

Okay, just did a quick play though of my 3 games on the Lite. Very impressive. NSMB is fun as hell and Castlevania is well, Castlevania - no complaints there. Tetris DS seems to be a lot easier though. I wish you could turn off the next block thing from showing so many in a row and just have it show the very next block like the older versions did.

Some people value service and and being able to get products with little hassle. I'm not saying all Wal-Marts are crap, but the ones I've gone to are. I don't think I'm missing out going elsewhere.

Just got done playing some Castlevania on mine. I love it so far, it is so nice and the d-pad is better than I thought it would be, good stuff all around.

I mentioned this in another thread but I managed to get the last one at my Best Buy. It finally finished charging and I tried out Castlevania, Trauma Center, and New Super Mario Bros, the difference really is what people say it is, night and day! I even tried the "so bright it kills you" setting and I was very impressed. First thing I noticed when i took it out of the box was that it looks a lot sleeker in person than it does in the pictures, but the improved screens definitely made it worth the wait. I can't imagine playing on the regular DS after using this.

DS lite get! Just finished trying out old DS and GBA games. What a difference! Not just the brightness either, clearer. The old ds had visible scanlines if you looked carefully but on the DS the screen makes you forget about the lack of filtering.

:lol Yeah, I was playing it through again just now, the game was already beautiful but now, wow. :P I can't say I'm used to the new d-pad and buttons though, especially start and select.

But I'm loving it, I don't see how we dealt with the original DS whatsoever.

I didn't have any hassle, never have. There's a lot less bullshit to sit through too, no promos, no deals, no trying to sell you extra shit. I'm in and out. Maybe I'm just lucky.

Although I will say the selection can often not be great. I'm still stuck using Gamestop for picking up games like Phoenix Wright, Castlevania, etc.

I didn't say anything about the start and select. They are a little annoying but I can manage.

Wait. They couldn't find the product you wanted, so you trashed their store and would stop shopping there if it wasn't so easy to essentially play through entire games for free?

Worse will happen if there aren't any systems available at my Best Buy.

I'm off!

I'm pretty sure all Wal-Mart stores come pre-trashed. At least, every one I've ever had the displeasure of being in has.

Hmmm....when you turn Mario Kart on for the DS, you hear "VROOM VROOM! YAHOO!"....but on the lite, you just hear Mario saying "Here we go!"

Anyone else a little pissed about the battery life on the highest brightness? I didn't get more than 5 hours on my first charge.

What's the time for the 3rd level?

Other than that, I'm extremely happy with the thing. I sold my first DS about a year ago, so I have a ton of quality games to enjoy during this summer lull.

wee, picked up the DS Lite. I've only got NSMB, and it's great (though not as "tight" feeling as I'd like, though I can get used to it) Love the mini games. I know I'll be getting Mario Kart. It's wifi compatible, right? Multiplayer races?

Hey NOA, **** you for not including the white WRISTSTRAP with the DS Lite. You can provide an extra stylus, yet not include the obligatory WRISTSTRAP? You provided the wriststrap for the original DS's and the japanese DS Lites, yet decided to go cheapo this time around? Way to go, bastards!!!! Hmph!

:/

Got my DSLite just a while ago from Zellers (last one left supposedly), just waiting for it to charge now.

The system is pretty barebones though (only things included are the system, charger, and stylus). I was expecting some wiping cloth at least.
Oh well, here's hoping there are no dead pixels. :D
