Official FolkLore thread of hype! Most overlooked game by far!

I noticed the dlc episodes on the euro store are different from the US store. Are they playable on the US version?
I don't think you can play the EU content with a non-EU version of the game, but I doubt the content itself is actually all that different and it's just the packaging.

Unfortunately the DLC only works for the game of the same region.

As far as I know Europe and USA just get a different subset of the 6 available DLC in the japanese store, eventually both regions should have all the DLC (thogh why it still has not happened yet boggles me).

Folklore is indeed one of the sleeper hits of PS3's first year, but to be regarded as a true classic it should have some issues ironed out: loading pauses are way too frequent and not that short even (I did perform the optional ~1 GB install available in the game's menu), but more than the length of each loading pause it was the frequency of those pauses during gameplay (moving from one area to the next, loading up a cut-scene, entering a house, etc...).
A good streaming system or having more content/more to do per each game area would have solved or lessened the problem. More often than not it is quite apparent that the game levels (especially in the Netherworld areas) is broken into a series of relatively small and confined "rooms/corridors" (although there are quite a bit of open areas).

If you were able to go around Doolin completely without any loading screen (besides maybe very tiny pauses when you enter buildings) the game would be an even more engaging experience.

DLC packs for Asian version are also available today, total 6 packs, they includes the rumble patch for the Asian version, I tested and it rumbles with DS3, but the vibration selection is missing in the options.

I have a general question:

When playing through the game, should I complete one character's chapter, then do the others'... or should I stick to one all the way through then play the other?

I just started the game this weekend myself. Alternating between them seems to work best for me since both their stories intertwine, so it makes sense to just find out the information from both sides at the same time. Otherwise I guess you'd get through the game with Ellen, and then learn all about the plot, and have no interest in playing Keat's chapters.

Until you get near the end and are required to bring the other character up to the same chapter in the story. Alternating between the two after each chapter would make playing through the easiest, but you might get tired of doing essentially the same thing twice in such a close proximity. If you play all the way through to Chapter 5 with one character and then start the other, at least you won't feel like you're replaying the same levels right after each other.

I got a PS3 + 57" HDTV + 5.1 surround system recently and I've been playing this game. It's really impressive in many ways. At first I was kind of wondering if it'd be all that great, but once I gave it a chance, I really fell in love with it. The art is a big part of the game, it's very original and very well done. I don't know if I'm a fan of the human character designs but everything else is fantastic. I'm up to the
Underwater City
and this place looks just... amazing. Makes me wonder how long this game has been in development, because all the detail in everything is great.

The only thing I'm not too big a fan of is the sound. The voice acting isn't really unbearable but I also didn't really think it was very good, either. Most locations are just background noise with some music playing softly in the background. I kind of wish there was more to the music sometimes, though. Running around in a place and all you can hear is water and bubbling sounds... eh.

I'm playing as Keats right now. The story is pretty interesting so far, too. I haven't really played many games with an interesting mystery type story.

It's a shame I probably won't be able to touch the DLC, as I can't afford it. There's so much, too. Geez. Is any of it story-related or is it just gameplay/quest stuff?

Well, some of the quests flesh out a few characters a bit more, but like all DLC none of it's crucial to the main plot. Each pack includes a costume for either Keats or Ellen (they replace one of the regular ones, and are chosen from the title screen), a new Folk, and a couple quests. Some of the quests are very short and/or boring, some are longer and interesting (with gameplay twists like "only one Folk at a time"), and the later ones can actually be quite difficult. You're not missing anything crucial without them, though if you like the game it does extend the experience well.

Wonderful game. I think I'm done chewing now.
Also: what the fuck at the music at the very end, starting at halfway through the credit roll :lol

This game needs to get a price drop. I want to pick it up, but I can't bring myself to spend $60 on it.

the game is $30 or sometimes $15 at target.............if you are in the USA of course

I gave up on the story about half way through, it was trudging along far too slowly.

The levelling folks up thing was fun though, excellent character and art design as well but the game did almost nothing to grip me it at times feels like your watching a bad ep of BSG 'GET ON WITH IT!!!!'

But you actually have to find it in the store. None of the ones around me have it in their system and online it is still $60.

Price is still holding me back. This might be one I pick up a while later when it is a lower price.

Yeah, nice atmosphere and certainly a couple unique ideas, but just too few story ideas stretched out over far too many cutscenes. Felt very artificial overall and made progressively less sense as I made it through the game. Still, you can skip it all, so at least it doesn't get in the way.
I feel about Folklore's narrative quite like I feel about DMC3's narrative: "pffft".

I really like what they did with the creature upgrades, and how unique they all feel, despite of there being so many types.

Anyone know where can I find a save with all the costumes unlocked? I've done it before but after I bought a new PS3 I've lost some of them in the Extras menu. (it appears the DLC data didn't carry over with my save).

I don't have the game (yet), but you DLed the extra costumes with your older ps3 its HDD. You need to reDL them again with your new ps3. You can find all your DLed files easily in the store by clicking the DL history. As you mentioned save files aren't connected with the DLC.

Is the DLC worth it? I just recently got the game and haev not started it yet. I see three packs of DLC, for 18 bucks total, which would be 24 missions... HOw many does the main game have? And are some packs worth it more than others? Or should I just stick to the main game only?

Can you share the DLC? If so, anyone have a spare download slot?

thank you so very much for buying this game .

well yeah if you liked the game story , Game Republic made the DLCs after the game so it give you some little secrets and some background story to the game characters , they are not that important , so i guess first finish the game then ask yourself if you want to know more .

the games have Chapters , and most the pub's missions are just side quests ( all the DLCs are side quests ) , but you got new cloaks and some useless folks .

so stick with the story right now and go play this amazing underrated gem , plz .

and yeah remember to play each chapter with both Ellen and Keats ( Ellen first ) then go to the next Chapter and repeat this will all chapters ..

I loved the story parts in the village -the actual levels , not so much :(

well I like the balance between Doolin and the Realms , in the village it's all about the murder mystery and and detective work and in the realms it's about fighting and collect your pokemons ( but yeah since this game use many RPG elements and style , your story is in the town and your fight is in the dungeons ) , the only thing big story wise happend in the realms was after chapter 5 , but near the end all big event were in the realms .

I demand spiritual successor , did you heard me Okamoto

Cool. Thanks for the advice. So the DLC is not crucial for the story, only after... good, I will play it then decide.

I bought all the DLC before even finishing the story. While they aren't needed, I really liked taking breaks to do some side quests, and I loved the new dress you get with the DLC.
The free christmas one was probably the one I liked the most as well.

Got the game recently...loving it.

Can anyone explain the bars underneath the folks in the menu screen?

The manual mentions nothing about what they indicate...I'm assuming folk strength and magic consumption?

Just bought this game at WalMart for 20 bucks, an old roommate told me it was amazing. Holy shit, how could I have avoided this for two years? The art style and environments are amazing and so beautiful- especially the Halloween look to it ;)

I've only dumped 45 mins into it but loving the hell out of it.

It took me months to find a copy of this game, it turns out that New Zealand only got like a couple thousand copies in the initial shipment and never got another. I finally found it in a buy sell and trade thread on a local forum. Now all I need to get is a PS3.

Yeah, it is a fantastic game. It is criminal how little attention it gets(this thread only has 3 pages).

One problem to keep in mind is the fact that you have to play with both Keats and Ellen, so it can feel a little repetitive at times.

Great game. Playing as Keats and Ellen got pretty repetitive near the end, but I loved the story and atmosphere throughout.

I hate you all for not buying this game :( Now we'll never get a sequel *Cries*

Endgame:
Did anyone else understand the drawing of Keats? I took it to mean that he himself was a part of Ellen's imagination.

Great story, amazing graphics. No sequel.

Yes.

Wish there would be a sequel.

He was
a halflife, created by Ellen's desire for protection in the guise of how she imagined Herve as an adult.

I'm in the last area (or what I assume is the last area) but when I put it in the other day I was struggling to make any progress. It's the only real criticism I have about the game, but it's quite a big one and that is the enemies have way too many hitpoints. Even with fully upgraded Folks regular foes can feel like you are plugging away for ages to fell them.

So it gets repetitive? Bummer, the gameplay is really fun and I love the slamming of the controller :lol
Personally i didn't find it repetitive
the story alone was enough to keep me playing through to the end

I seriously could watch an entire game or movie just cased off of the cut-scenes alone, I LOVE the motion comic book style.

I bought it day 1 so I did my part!

I got this game for $5 new at best buy a while ago. I got my slim and have been playing through it and loving it. There are so many seemingly insignificant choices the design team made that, together, make this game such a fantastic, cohesive, atmospheric experience.
The comic book style for example. If they had tried to do voice acting for it it would have been embarrassingly awful, but the comic strip story scenes just work so well. I just beat the 3rd realm, and am really enjoying it still.

So, I bought this game two days ago, and I'm really surprised so far. For an """"old"""" game I thinks it is really beautiful (dream athmosphere), ans I do like the fight system. So far I'm really enjoying it. I'm glad I read this this thread : it made me wanna buy the game. Really, I think any PS3 owner must try this beauty.
