Roma reject Mancini bid
By Nadia Carminati - Created on 21 Jun 2007

Roma are reported to have rejected a bid from Liverpool for Alessandro Mancini.

Reports emanating from Italy suggest Roma have shunned an offer from the English club for the talented Brazilian.

Reds boss Rafa Benitez is believed to have put Mancini on his list of transfer targets this summer as he looks to add to his attacking options at Anfield.

Mancini enjoyed a fine season with Roma last term and he has established himself as a key player in the Giallorossi side.

Liverpool have been quiet in the transfer market so far this summer, but they are believed to have offered €19million (£12.7million) for the skilful winger.

Roma have previously rebuffed Liverpool overtures and are thought to be putting together a new deal to keep Mancini in the Italian capital until 2012.

Encouraging to know Liverpool ARE trying to do transfer deals.

REDS RANKED THIRD IN EURO STANDINGS
Paul Eaton 21 June 2007
Liverpool will be ranked as third seeds when next season's Champions League competition gets underway.
The Reds - beaten finalists in Athens in May and five times winners of the tournament - are ranked behind AC Milan and Barcelona in the standings but will avoid the elite teams in European football if they triumph in their third round qualifier and progress into the group stages.

England are the only country to have all of their teams seeded, with Chelsea being named among the top eight sides for the first time.

:D :D

definitely. Although I do get the feeling that other clubs aren't too happy with Liverpool's player evaluations and the offers they receive.

Liverpool should spend their money on Owen rather than torres. Owen is cheaper and he will sfore more goals. His injury problems are a concern, but I think its worth the risk. It could turn out to be a bargain. Im not sure whats the possibility of this happening though. I ant remember if it was benitez that wanted owen to leave, but if thats the case then I cant see him trying to buy him.

I dont think torres is worht the money. He's costing you £25 million but he cant score more goals than forlan or kanoute. He's is so overrated. Liverpool needa goalscorer and I dont think he can provide that many goals.

The only thing I don't really like about it is that the deal involves 60 million quid of debt. (40 pence for each share totaling £21.6m is all he's putting up in cash). For a club like Man U debt ain't no thing, but City isn't exactly in a similar position.
To some extent I agree because manchester United receieve a much higher revenue, but dont forget that out debt is HUGE. I cant remember how much it is, but its a shocking figure. Im not hugely concerned about it like most fans though. They've shown that they're willing to spoend money and they've had success with their football team in america, so it shows that they are capable of running a sporting business.

It's huge, no doubt, but Man U is a global brand. People on all corners of the earth want their merchandise, watch their matches, etc. The upside is virtually limitless. City can't even get people in all corners of Manchester behind them (exaggerating).

The Glazers know their shit but running a sports team here is a lot different than running a high-end football club in Europe. Owners can't lose money because of salary caps and revenue sharing of gate and television receipts. In the FAPL, well, Abramovich has done a bang up job of running a for-profit business. :lol

Maybe, but it is much sensible than Chelsea's name your price policy.

you have to be quick though, Leyton Orient and Barnett are closing in on him

Leyton Orient are money throwing bastards, they'll probably get him instead of us as we won't catch their bids.

Roma stinks. Mancini is not worth more than 13-14 million. I think Liverpool are looking elsewhere besides Malouda now.
United are willing to sell richardson; he is available. Just give fergie a bottle of red wine and you can have him. If you do that then you can finally reunite pennant with his long lost brother.

Hmm... they do look strangely alike. I think Pennant is the drunk and evil twin. I think we need Richardson to balance it out.

I think abramovich is an exception because he's been spending ridiculous amounts of money. He's not planned out the future that well, but I think things are changing now; mourinho's lack of spending suggests that he's fed up of playing real life FM and actually wants to make some progress making chelsea somewhat profitable.

The Glazers seem to have some sort of plan. Apart from this season, their spending hasnt been over the top. I doubt we will see many seasons like this where we will spend this much money. Since they've come they've provided good transfer funds and they've been looking at ways to make more profit. There has been a big increase in ticket prices and although a lot of fans sound uphappy about it, I bet Old trafford will still be full next season. They're also going to receieve more money from the new TV deal.

Thats a good enough reason to sell him for united fans.

Holy crap where did that rain come from it was like turning on the shower.

How much has Abramovich wasted on players that they sold for less than they bought must be around 100 million deficit.

Grimandi is apparently set to be Arsenal's new Director of Football.

I nearly forgot about it, but there was this great incident at the Bergkamp testimonial:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KuVT6-iRR2U

The whole stadium was laughing, and if I remember correctly no foul was given. Great stuff.

He's also a very good scout in FM

edit: much better video and there was a penalty btw. I love it how the people applaud him :lol

:lol That was great when it happened. I love the look on his face - so French and hilarious at the same time.

A bit of MLS news

Nowak will NOT coach the Chicago Fire

When the Chicago Fire announced the firing of Dave Sarachan today one name jumped to the top of most people's lists as a leading candidate to replace him, Peter Nowak. Fire fans have long dreamed of their former captain coming back to lead the team he captained to the 1998 MLS Cup title.

It's not happening.

According to sources in Chicago, Nowak has no intention of taking the job vacated by Sarachan. Nowak is apparently happy with his current position as assistant coach of the US national team.

So who are the leading candidates? Denis Hamlett is the interim coach but appears unlikely to be hired on a permanent basis. Chicago-area soccer legend Frank Klopas is likely to be considered while Juan Carlos Osorio, who I suggested earlier today, may actually get a look. What I am hearing is that Fire president John Guppy wants to hire a permanent replacement ASAP, preferably before Cuauhtemoc Blanco arrives in July.

Galaxy trade Sturgis and Findley to RSL for Chris Klein

Just a day after introducing newly-signed Honduran forward Carlos Pavon, the LA Galaxy have added yet another attacking weapon to the bunch. According to sources on the West Coast, the Galaxy have acquired veteran winger Chris Klein, dealing talented U.S. Under-20 national team defender/midfielder Nathan Sturgis and talented young forward Robbie Findley to Real Salt Lake in the process.

Man, I started with that Zidane movie, got pissed about the comments and continued to watch Cruijff compilations. Best. European. Player. Ever!

I wonder when we'll get another player like him and Pelé or Maradonna who can just totally dominate the entire game. Probably never :(

The problem is that the standard of the game is so much higher these days than it was back then - it's more difficult to really stand out now I suppose.

Also, these days it's a lot more difficult for offensive players, since defending got a lot better too. Today's defenders are not only excellent in positioning but are also pacey and have good technical ability.

I'm not playing down any of those guys by the way, since they were fantastic and amazing.

The cross-border clash between the US and Canada is on tonight. Should be a good one. The US puts a little bit more talent on the field, but Canada has been playing very well all tournament.

Also, Copa America rosters are due today. Should be interesting to see who the US is bringing. We have to play Argentina in our first game, and it's rumored that Messi and Tevez are going to play. Gulp!

Obviously there's the qualifying to come first so some of these teams could get knocked out, but if they go through, I think this should be the CL draw:

Milan
Barcelona
Liverpool*
Inter
Arsenal*
Real Madrid
Chelsea
Man Utd
-----------
Valencia*
Lyon
FC Porto
Sevilla*
PSV
Roma
Benfica*
Ajax*
----------
Bremen*
Celtic*
Schalke
Stuttgart
Steaua Bucharest**
CSKA Moscow*
Sporting Lisbon
Lazio*
-----------
Marseille
Rangers**
Shakhtar**
Besiktas**
Olympiakos
Anderlecht*
Dinamo Kiev*
Spartak Moscow

The *s are for teams who still have to go through qualifying rounds.

While there's no dreaded draw like Chelsea outside of the top seeds anymore, there are still teams you want to avoid. Lyon and Sevilla would be nasty, especially when looking at the third seeds, all three Germans sides and Lazio. You wouldn't want Marseille either.

Of course, these teams won't necessarily get through, only the un*ed ones are definitely in there. If Liverpool and Arsenal managed to get themselves knocked out, the top seeds would rejoice at avoiding Valencia and Lyon.

These are the other teams with some sort of shot at getting there (below this I think teams can just forget it):

Rennes*
AEK Athens*
Dinamo Bucharest*
Sparta Prague*
Fenerbahce*
Levski Sofia**
Genk**
Slovan Liberec**
FC Zurich**
Beitar Jerusalem**
Rosenborg**
Salzburg**
Red Star Belgrade**
Zaglebie Lubin**
Copenhagen***
Debreceni***
Dinamo Zagreb***
IF Elfsborg***
Ventspils***

There are some tough old teams in there, but any of those who get through would only make 4th seeds.

Yup, you're right. I came to that conclusion as well.

One thing I really like of the old guys, compared to the new guys (speaking about Ronaldinho & C. Ronaldo). Is that the old guys had so much grace, and kept everything simple. They only need 1 fake instead of 23 stepovers. It was soo much more efficient (maybe that's why I like Kaka more than the other 2 already mentioned)

Ah, the romance of old godlike players ^^.

it's because C. Ronaldo is a horrible show off. It pisses me off watching 20 stepovers - there's nothing about those stepovers that a trained monkey couldn't do. Yeah, yeah, he's gotten better and all, but he's still a poxy little show off. (also, it's rumoured that the C does not stand for Cristiano)

Not all good players are like that though, luckily.

it is, I hate the qualifying round though. Only thinking about it makes me nervous.

That wasn't easy to work out btw, so you better appreciate it!

Yes, for the teams going straight into the third qualifying round. I forgot to explain above, * = having to go through one qualifying round, ** two and *** three.

The third qualifying round takes place 14/15 and 28/29 August. And the Blackburn - Arsenal game is right after the first leg, excellent. I'll take any slight advantage when facing a team like Arsenal. Though we'll probably be Intertoto/UEFA Cupping at the same time, so it's really just trying to get back on a level playing field rather than an advantage.

There's actually a Premiership game before the first qualifier this year, I think normally it starts before the league season.

Arsenal already have fixture congestion - wheee! It's a good thing they added so many new players in the off-season. ;) All joking aside, I guess getting everyone back from their injury problems is going to give Arsenal a big boost.

Yeah...till they all start going down in pre-season training.

Really looking forward to the Canada/USA tilt...US should be favourites due to more experience and the home crowd, but I think we can give the yanks a really good fight.

Haha Mama Smurf, if I knew you wanted it, I could have copy/paste the stuff from my football website. They had it up yesterday :p

:(

Oh well, that means there's at least two of us with enough free time to waste working that out.

Did I get it right? I had to go through the CL regulations to see how clubs each country can enter and what stage they enter at, then I had to check the coefficients for the leagues themselves, then go through all the leagues finding out which teams finished where, and finally compare the list of entrants to the coefficient list for individual clubs to see the order.

This is what I have: (rank - team - country - points)

Good, it's the same apart from Man Utd and Chelsea and they have the same points so could go either way.

The Portugal - Italy U21s Olympic playoff is tonight btw, I think people will miss it without the reminder, it's not exactly at the forefront of everybody's minds.

Though I personally think Serbia should be thrown out for the racist chanting and Italy and Portugal can both have a place.

Keller to Start vs. Canada

Veteran goalkeeper Kasey Keller will make his 100th U.S. national team appearance tonight when the United States faces Canada in the Gold Cup semifinals at Soldier Field, sources close to the selection process said today. Keller was chosen over Tim Howard and will join Tony Meola as the only U.S. keeper to reach 100 caps. If the Americans advance to Sunday's final, Howard, who is atop the U.S. depth chart, seems sure to start, although a strong performance by Keller tonight could make Bob Bradley's decision more difficult.

No word on the remainder of the lineup. I will rejoin you from the ballpark later today.

Weird, I would have thought that Howard had the starting position secured by now. Oh well, Keller knows what he's doing, so it's not a drop in quality at all.

I hope so, if only for entertainment value. I'd also like him to prove people wrong though, 90% of people don't seem to realise just how successful he was in domestic football before he took over at England.

I'm not even convinced the takeover will go through personally, the whole thing sounds pretty dodgy.

I'm annoyed at my sister, she's set her wedding date for a Saturday in September 2008. Who knows what fixtures might be on that day, she really has no consideration for others. I'm now gonna refuse to usher, they should just get a sign like I said in the first place.

Sturgis was also a meal ticket for a designated player slot next year. :(
