I really dont understand why we played 3-5-2 instead of giving Wright-Phillips a start in place of Gerrard and playing 4-4-2 again, i thought the whole point of dropping beckham was to get some real width?! Drop Frank Lumplard play Gerrard in the Middle and play 2 proper-wide players (or one and Joe Cole now he's back, anything but more Downing).

Yup. Stevie and Lamps are incompatible on this team, each needs attacking play through him and Gerrard is simply more creative than Fat F. Lampshade.

And Downing is a muppet.

He's having the same problem now for Chavski alongside Ballack. You just can't play him with another attacking central mid. He doesn't drop back to cover nor does he run into space well, he's got to be the director, and in both contexts his counterparts are better at it.

I enjoy his thirty-yard lasers into row Z though.

I cant believe what Robinson did. Sure he was unlucky because the ball bounced just as he was about to kick it but he should have made some contact on the ball. The whole reason why robinson is in goal is because we used to think that he doesnt make the same mistakes as James does, but what robinson did last night is probably worse than any of James' mistakes.

The whole team was crap. Both terry and ferdinand kept making mistakes. The midfield was invisible; scott parker made no impact, since I didnt see the teamsheet I didnt realise carrick was playing until after 15 minutes and fat ****ing frank was shite. His passing was pants, I cant even remember if he had a shot and he did nothing thwe whole game. Just before the game he said he needs to midfield players to play behind him, which just goes to show that he is a lazy shit who does nothing but shoots when he gets the ball 20 yards away from goal.

The way we played yesterday just goes to show that Beckham was dropped for non-footballing reasons. Im sure beckham could have passed or played better than anyone on the pitch last night.

I don't think people have to be so harsh on Robinson. Sure, the play was horrible, but if any of you guys have played enough football, can you honestly tell me ou've never had something like that happened to you because of a bad patch of grass? There's just not much you can do when the ball bounces a couple of centimeters away from your feet. He was just in the wrong place.

Edit: Forget what i said, i am being too harsh on robinson, but I do reckon he could have still dealt with the ball. He also made a mess with the first goal, he was too far off his line.

Yeah, I wouldn't blame Robinson on that play...it's one of those things where you see the ball played back a thousand times and just hope the goalie doesn't get tricked up like that. Let's also remember that he was easily the best player in an England shirt...without his performance it would've been 4-0.

That said I literally howled with laughter at that second goal...at that point it was all I could do. Results like this also make the "anyone but Sven" people look pretty ****ing foolish, not that it takes much to do that. The way MacLaren was getting his balls blown because England put 7 balls into the net against a team who's population is dwarfed by some North American high schools was just amazing to me. To be fair, England's midfield is missing Lennon, Cole and Gerrard, arguably their three most creative players (and certainly two of the quickest in Lennon and Cole). The lack of creativity on display yesterday was simply stunning though.

And then I finally see Walcott's brace (thanks cornballer), and it makes me wonder all the more why he didn't play in Germany, and why the kid took so much stick from the dumb shits in the media and certain England players who've hardly pulled their own weight while wearing that jersey since June. You can't honestly tell me that Walcott would be any less deserving of a senior spot then ****ing Richardson.

Southamerican cup updates:

Gimnasia La Plata (Arg) 2 - 0 Fluminense (Bra)

Gimnasia goes forward, to play Colo Colo (Chile) for quarterfinal

Lanus (Arg) 4 - 2 Corinthians (Bra)

Lanus goes forward, to play Pachuca (Mex) for quarterfinal

Atletico Paranaense (Bra) 2 - 1 River Plate (Arg)

Atletico goes forward, to play ??? for quarterfinal

Atletico is the only remaining Brasilian team. Both mexican teams made the quarter finals. Argentine teams dominate.

the premiership is finally back again this weekend! about time too.

Both Chelsea in Manu have difficult away games against Reading and Wigan respectively, Arsenal are at home vs Watford.

If everything is going as I am hoping Arsenal will be 3 points behind those two, with a game in hand.

I think there might be a surprise and Wenger is starting Walcott, I could be wrong - but this could be the perfect game for it. Maybe playing with Persie and Walcott on the wing with Henry in the centre.

Wouldn't be a bad idea...got a Champions League tilt on the other side of the ****ing planet in Moscow on Tuesday, and Ljunberg, Eboue and Baptista will all be unavailable for at least the Saturday match, and probably Tuesday as well. Gallas is also a slight question mark, but Wenger thinks he'll be okay for tomorrow.

Former genius and current foolboy Steve McClaren is suggesting that some significant changes might be made to the England squad when they play friendlies against Holland and Spain next month, including the possibility of adding some U21 players. It would be humourous to see Gerrard having a changing stall next to Walcott for those matches, after the way he basically ran him down in his little book.

Good to see the Premier League start up again. They're showing the Arsenal-Watford game of FSC tomorrow, so I'll be able to watch. Too bad that a few players were injured during internationals, and hopefully they recover quickly. Tough luck for Eboue as he's been playing very well recently - I guess we'll find out if Hoyte is any better on his preferred right side. (That's where he's meant to play, correct?) The other entertaining thing about this game is that Jay Demerit, a youngish American centerback, is playing for Watford, and I've never seen him before. Grant Wahl had an good article about how he made his way to Watford from Wisconsin in this week's Sports Illustrated.

Ah...just when I was about to bump this thread, United just tied up their scrappy affair with Wigan. Been a fun game to watch so far. EPL >>>>> internationals

Holy crap...Walcott with the start? That's ****ing awesome. I assume he's playing on the left.

Second United goal was terrific...excellent cross by Rooney, brilliant control by Saha. Too bad though, was hoping United would drop some points so Arsenal would have a chance to close the gap. Can't see that happening now.

Hurrah we beat wigan 3-1! I was really worried because after that first half performance it looked like we were never going to score. Everyone was playing shit. Our passing was sloppy and wigan stronger in midfield. Wigan deserved to be ahead because they were playing better. bainmes socred an amaxing free kick.

The 2nd half was completely different; we began playing as well as we did against fulham. Giggs was put on and he was a massive infuence. Vidic got the first goal, he scored a header from a corner. He was ahero at the end of the day, despite his very poor performance in the first half. Saha got the 2nd goal and rtedeemed himself for an awful missed a few minutes earlier. Rooney also found his form in the 2nd half. He didnt score, but he was amazing in the 2nd half. He made some excellent passes and he was really lifting the team.

Rooney had this great chance really late in the game but instead of shooting in a desperate attempt to break his dry spell, he squared the ball to Solskjaer instead who was in a better position. Even though the ball did not end up at the back of the net, it really goes to show Rooney's character and unselfishness. The effort he puts into every match he plays and the way he always puts the team ahead of himself is the mark of a great great GREAT player.

2-0 to the Arsenal at half time. Unlike the first marker, Henry's goal was 100% legit...vintage stuff. Pretty good half overall, though they looked shakey at the back at times. Watford could've easily had a goal of their own with any sort of finish and luck. Walcott was just senstational in the opening 20 minutes...couple good runs, couple of fantastic feeds. I just love this kid to death.

3-0 win...solid result. Hopefully all the players came through unscathed, as they play in Moscow on Tuesday in what will be a tough contest. The third goal was just beautiful...great feed by (I think) Fabregas to Henry, who unselfishly slid it to Abedbayor for the easy marker. After that Arsenal was doing training ground tricks for fun. I can't get over how fun it is to watch this team.

I should add that Rooney had a superb game against Wigan...as long as he continues to play hard and set up his teamates for easier opportunities at goal (and keeps his mouth shut), he'll be fine...his goals will come. United just looked fantastic in the second half after Fergie made a couple changes, which is to his credit.

Here's the complete list of Premier League scores...

Wigan 1-3 Man Utd

Arsenal 3-0 Watford

Aston Villa 1-1 Tottenham

Liverpool 1-1 Blackburn

Man City 0-0 Sheff Utd

Middlesbrough 2-1 Everton

Portsmouth 2-0 West Ham

Tottenham, Liverpool and West Ham continue to struggle. West Ham's situation might turn into a crisis soon if things don't turn around...they haven't had a win since making that double splash on transfer deadline day.

Meanwhile Arsenal's back in the top four, still holding that game in hand...

Team Pld Pts
Man Utd 8 19
Portsmouth 8 16
Chelsea 7 16
Arsenal 7 14
Ast. Villa 8 14
Bolton 7 14
Everton 8 13
Reading 7 13
Blackburn 8 12
Liverpool 8 11
Man City 8 9
Fulham 7 9
M'brough 8 8
Tottenham 8 8
Newcastle 7 7
Sheff Utd 8 6
Wigan 7 5
West Ham 8 5
Watford 8 4
Charlton 7 3

Reading/Chelsea's got a slight delay up here, but I expect the bastards from west London to secure the three points. Bet Lampard gets himself a hatrick. :lol

Without Ronaldo, luckily Rooney and Giggs come back on time! At least Rooney tried to do more and had positive result from his effort. Still need to solve the job division problem between Scholes and Carrick though, maybe they should not be on pitch at the same time...

That was awesome. Too bad Reading didn't snatch the late equalizer. Hilarious seeing Terry wearing the keeper's jersey.

Nice work by Walcott today - he looked great for the first 30 min and faded a bit after that. Arsenal played pretty well on the whole - pretty funny that Toure took a 40 yd shot, too. I don't think that was the way they drew that one up. Should be an interesting trip to Moscow on Tuesday.

One for you gooners: When are they going to debut fran merida or carlos vela? are they even at Arsenal or are they still too young to be eligible for football in this country?

I'm not sure about Vela's current status, but Merida has been suiting up for the reserves. Word is that he's been playing pretty well and had a goal a few weeks ago. He's a bit back in the pecking order for midfield spots, but he might get a run out in the League Cup or something. Here's his page on the Arsenal website. Anyway, that's about all I know about it.

Yeah what he did just goes to show what kind of player he is. 95% of sstrikers would have been selfish and would have shot. The angle might have been a little tight, but most world class strikers could get it in. Rooney did go for the shot and pased the ball to solskjaer despite the fact that he has only scored in one match this whole season.

Ouch

Estudiantes 7 - 0 Gimnasia La Plata

(Argentina)

On the MLS side, the standings are: Bold = playoffs

1 D.C. UNITED 55
2 FC DALLAS 52
3 NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION 48
4 CHICAGO FIRE 47
5 HOUSTON DYNAMO 46
6 CHIVAS USA 43
7 COLORADO RAPIDS 41
8 RED BULL NEW YORK 39

9 REAL SALT LAKE 39
10 LOS ANGELES GALAXY 39
11 KANSAS CITY WIZARDS 38
12 COLUMBUS CREW 33

Thanks for posting that. I was about to do it in a couple of minutes. I'll be at the game next Saturday against DC United knowing that the Red Bulls shouldn't be in the playoffs considering their performance throughout the season. Either way, I'm still cheering for them to go all the way because it's not the team's fault that 8 teams go to the playoffs in a 12 team league. The Chicago-New England and the Houston-Chivas match should be very exciting to watch. All of the games are going to be on ESPN2 or ABC so I hope there's good crowds, and hopefully some of the American fans in this thread will watch a few games.

Yeah, having most of the teams in playoffs isnt very exciting. At least next year with 13 teams itll be slightly harder to get a spot.

Any word on the red-bulls playing without NFL lines on the field for the playoffs?

If the field was grass then it wouldn't be a problem. However, with the artificial turf and an NFL team playing a game every week it's sadly going to be another game on gridiron lines. That's why all of us want that new stadium much sooner than the 2008 season.

Another goal by Diouf in the 57th!

Newcastle played well in the first half while Bolton did well in the second. The 2 goals lost were common fault we could see in Newcastle defense... Missed header, failure marking, wrong positioning...

I really think they should do something on their defense (again).

Petr Cech underwent surgery to repair a depressed fracture of the skull. He faces a minimum of ten weeks recuperating and was suffering from swelling on the brain. Chelsea released a statement saying “The operation was successful, but it is too early to give an accurate assessment of his condition.”

Here's what such an injury entails.

Depressed skull fracture
Fragments of bone may need lifting back into position.
Check for increased pressure and bleeding.
Brain inspected for injury.
Wound closed and stitched.

I don't think anyone realized how badly Cech was hurt when the play occurred...I certainly didn't. It didn't even look like a hard blow to me. Here's hoping Cech makes a full recovery.

same here, I didn't think it would be anywhere near that bad, I didn't even see that he hit him with the knee for the first few replays. It certainly didn't look intentional to me. What a horrible injury, hope he's alright soon.

Mourinho has been saying that Hunt should get punished for injuring Cech, it didnt look like Hunt did it deliberately at all.

I didn't think so, the only one who knows is Hunt. I don't see how they could punish this, without proof that it wasn't accidental.

I think that if he wanted to hurt cech he would have gone in with his foot, not his knee. It was actually very difficult to hit him with the knee. You never know though.

edit: does anyone know what happened to mamasmurf? I miss his analysing.

I'll probably tune into a couple games of the playoffs this year. It's hard for me to stomach after they moved San Jose to Houston (I used to go to 8-10 Quakes games per year), but it's good for US Soccer that the MLS succeed. So I guess I'll pay my dues and watch a few matches. I agree that the Chicago-NE and Houston-Chivas series should be entertaining. There's a few young players that are worth taking a look at as well. I haven't seen Adu play in a year or so, and I also want to see how Kenny Cooper, Altidore, Ricardo Clark, etc... are playing.

Wenger fears for keepers' safety

Arsene Wenger fears a goalkeeper could be killed on the football field unless they are given more protection.

Chelsea keeper Petr Cech fractured his skull after colliding with Reading's Stephen Hunt on Saturday.

The Arsenal boss said it was no coincidence more keepers were suffering serious injuries during matches.

But he added: "I can't imagine a player will go in to try to hit another player on the head with his knee because you know you can kill the player."

Wenger said there had been four instances in the past six months in which goalkeepers had been badly injured.

Chelsea's second-choice keeper Carlo Cudicini was also stretchered off in Saturday's match after colliding with Ibrahima Sonko.

Middlesbrough's Mark Schwarzer fractured a cheekbone after a collision with Dean Ashton in April, while Newcastle's Shay Given needed surgery after tearing a bowel in a challenge with Marlon Harewood in September.

"This year there have been four incidents. It cannot be coincidence," Wenger said.

And the Arsenal boss admitted he feared a serious injury to his keeper Jens Lehmann.

"In some games, Jens has been targeted," he said.

Lehmann also voiced concern about goalkeepers' safety, saying someone could end up in a wheelchair if they were not protected.

"I really felt sorry for both Petr Cech and Carlo Cudicini. It made me really, really angry too.

"I'm upset still because it happened to Schwarzer and Given. Now it's happened to Cech and Cudicini.

"All of them are great keepers, very brave. They never went to challenge or harm the striker, but all four of them got knocked out due to what are called 'clumsy' challenges.

"This word clumsy makes me really angry as well because these stupid TV pundits say sometimes 'it's clumsy' and 'it's a man's game'.

"Yes it is a man's game, but what you have to consider as well is these men have children and wives and their children don't want to see their fathers end up with lifelong damage, driven around in a wheelchair or not being able to work

in a way it's good that this is starting a discussion now, I do think that keepers are often attacked unfairly and not protected by the refs.

Then again, I'm still unsure if Hunt really meant to hit Cech, I don't know.

At least mad Jens does not seem to like Mark Lawrenson. I myself have to contain myself from not smashing the tv or vomitting vertically whenever I hear his stupid comments. Get him off TV! He's spoiling all BBC football programs for me.

Im pretty sure Hunt meant to kick him, just not in the head.

I agree with Wenger something needs to be done.

The just need to punish forwards who go in on goalkeepers, the keepers are the ones taking all the risks as they are throwing their heads and chests while the attackers are throwing their studded boots in.

Anywhere else on the pitch if a player dived in like that and didnt come away with the ball it would be a red card, if it was with intent or not. And if the player gets the ball in that situation and Cech takes out Hunt its a penalty and he's probably off..the laws just not fair at the moment.

absolutely, I think that's what needs to be changed. I don't want a game without any physical contact, but protecting people is important.

as for Hunt, I'm not sure. But they need to get players to understand that they can't go in like that, especially if there's little to no chance to win the ball. I feel that he is being singled out unfairly, because this sort of thing happens all the time.

Yeah he is getting overly criticized, but that's due to Cech getting his skull crushed. The attempt to injure clearly wasn't there, but it was incredibly reckless. It's defintely something that needs to be addressed. And people wonder why Lehmann goes into "Mad Lens" mode.

"**** with me again and I'm putting my boot up your ass!"

Ive seen that video of cech getting injured and I just cant see how drogba, mourinho and anyone could say that it was deliberate. Hunt ran for the ball, but when cech caught it he couldnt stop himself and he accidently hit him. There isnt anything he could do. HYunt had the right to go for the ball before cech had caught it, but he couldnt stop himself when cech had got the ball because he was too close. Hunt shouldnt be getting any blame.

If anyone should be blamed for anything, it should be mike riley. He made cech crawl off the pitch despite his condition. He couldnt tell how severe the injury was but when a player has an injury to the head then the ref should make sure that the player recieves the best treatment instead of making him crawl off the pitch.
