gz milan even though not one player played particularly well. same goes for liverpool, lots of sloppy passing all around. be interesting to see who benitez signs over the summer now though, zenden has got to get replaced imo and as mentioned a goal scoaring striker. gogo eto'o!

alright, now that the season is officially over, let's see how the predictions I made when the real season (Arsenal's) was over turned out:

me on 14/03/07 said:
there's plenty to do:

Announce to go for 3rd place, but secretly hope for 2nd.well

Destroy Chelseas title challenge for good;yes
win 3 times at Anfield in one season. no
Get a few more players injured and suspended.yes

At the end of the season be disappointed for a week that it's 4th place after all, a week later be convinced that we'll win 4 titles next year.yes

Plenty of bitching and complaining along the way, then laugh at spurs that they ****ed their season up worse than we did.yes

Exciting times ahead!

not bad.

And I can officially announce now that I think Arsenal will win the quadruple next year!

Quadruple of runners up positions while Liverpool win them all. :)

Oh yeah somethings been pissing me off.

WARNING RANDOM SUBJECT CHANGE:

Real Madrid and Barcelona are on equal points yet Barcelona are ahead on goal difference, i was watching Revista de la liga on Sky and the guy said Real Madrid were ahead on Head to Head.

....WTF is Head to Head?

BACK TO THE RECENT EVENT:

I wonder if Benitez will rip the team apart for next season even moreso than before this match, seeing how the story of Benitez's rein so far has been lack of attacking threat in the team, then again getting young talent isn't cheap either.

hey hey hey, it's not over! We still have a few England games to go. Guys? Hello? Where is everyone?

Awe come on that's international, now this thread is all about the ins and outs at club level predominantly.

It's the way the Spanish League sorts out their table. Other leagues do arrange things differently to England you know!

Looking forward to West Brom v Derby now.

I think it's silly that there's still internationals scheduled now btw. All the players are exhausted and in need for a holiday. I have a feeling we will see games that will actually top the fa cup final in non-quality.

At least there's something to do though

Yeah i know, hence why I've never heard of that term, hence why I'm asking what the hell it is.

Oh I see so Barca vs Real Madrid carry such an extra importance than just a 6 pointer match. :O

Who do you think will win promotion via play-off my money is on Derby but my gut is saying West Brom because they're hooked on that premiership drug.

1st june baby, i cannot wait XD as i neutral (even though i live in england) i'm expecting a helluva game

Probably more interesting than the game will be seeing if Wenger is in the crowd. It's rumoured he'll be there to watch Owen, we'll see if it's true or not.

Oh crap i won't be able to watch the England Match on that date because i've got to watch the more interesting transfer window.

ugh i remember when a team did what you just mentioned against Liverpool where after all the substitutions they had about 7 attackers on the pitch that team was called Barcelona.

Guess what happened?

We controlled the game even more.

That always doesn't work, and as you can see piled in lots of players further up, Milan were under lots of pressure in the last part of the match.

I feel that 7 attackers have a better chance of scoring than 3. Yes it leaves the back vulnerable, but that doesnt even matter if you cant score a goal.

Gremio - Defensor Sporting starts right now, and the first match was 2-0 for Defensor, so Gremio needs to score 2 for penalties, 3 for a win (assuming Defensor doesnt). Lets see what strategy they follow.

(Theres not much seeing right now, the field is a smoke mine)

Surely he'll be at the touchline.

Yeah but the way Milan are setup all they'd do is soak in the pressure and just spring a counter attack and score like they did Man U, and like I know all so well what Arsenal did earlier in the season to Liverpool. (senses hadareud with a big grin on his face).

Anyway even if we did have 7 attackers they'd still be as inneffective as they have been all season we don't have that many players who can come off the bench and change the match the story of our season I'm afraid.

Whereas in the barcelona match i DID shit one when Barcelona brought on the likes of guily as a sub, no human team should have that type of sub.

I'm very upset that liverpool didn't win the cup:( Although we didn't deserve it two years ago , this time around, we did deserve to win it. Hopefully we can be a contender for the title next season and, yes, I'm trying to forget this defeat with alcohol. Congrats to Milan fans.

too bad for Liverpool. i was hoping they'd win. they looked great for most of the game too. i was waiting for that miracle come back after their goal, but no such luck.

Awesome. I'm going to the US-China game in San Jose (June 2nd), then driving down to LA for the first two Gold Cup matches in Carson the week after that. Should be fun to check out games at the Home Depot Center since I've never been there before.

cool, have fun. the Home Depot center should be a great place to watch a game.

The TFC trades are getting a little annoying. I haven't been bothered to memorize who's on this team cause Mo's either releasing or trading players every week. It'd be something if these moves were moving us closer to a MLS Cup, but why kid ourselves...we'll be life or death to even make the playoffs regardless.

true, but these are the growing pains of an expansion team i guess. still, you guys have a great thing going up there. i cant wait to visit the place.

sorry if i missed it, but are you from the area (Toronto)? have you been to the stadium yet? looks like a real blast.

Cornballer said:
Not that anyone really cares about this when the Champs League Final is today, but here's some interesting speculation about RSL making a run at Shalrie Joseph with their newfound cap space....

yeah, just talk mostly. he's not up for trade and i doubt we'd let him go. Celtic wanted him too, but were declined.

id hate to see him go for sure. i just wish we'd pay him what he's asking for. i guess thats what the qoute from the article meant about him having a rough season, cause it sure isnt his play on the field. (scored a goal on the road agains Houston last weekend :D)

Mama Smurf said:
Bullshit? How about reality. UEFA didn't want Milan in the tournament, the legal loophole they got in with has since been fixed so no one can do it again.

Reality is:
- Milan was penalized with 8 point in his score by the Italian Football Federation at the beginning of the season.
- Uefa allowed Milan Ac playing in the preliminary step in this Champions League edition.
- Milan won the final match
- It was a fair match
- Milan won the ****ing Campions League

Reality is, you are a sore loser.
So, please, stop blubbering about your own guesses and/or fancy.
Reality is rock solid in this case..

Just got finished with the match. Meh. I was hoping for a better game. If Liverpool had some better wingplay on the left side, this could have been a different game. Oh well. I'm not even going to wade into the "should AC have been in the Champions League" argument - all I'll do is congratulate the players and fans for AC, and I'll leave the management out of it... My condolences to Liverpool.

Yeah, I'm pretty excited about it. I haven't seen the Nats play since the debacle last summer in Germany. :(

I hope he sticks around with NE, but who knows what's going to happen. He hasn't seemed very pleased with his contract situation for the last year or so, not to mention that he still seems bitter about not being able to leave for Celtic. The man deserves a raise. Same story for De Rosario.

Gremio just beat Defensor 2-0 taking the game to penalty kicks.

I dont care about either team but a MUCH better game than Liverpool-Milan.

If Gremio wins the pnalties they will play either Cocuta or Santos in the quarter finals

If Defensor wins they play Cocuta

Its about as rock solid as air. Look, if we ignore the people that run milan and focus on the players, the manager and the backroom staff, then milan are worthy winners. The players and managers had no idea about match fixing so its not fair to criticise them. As a group of players, they were the team that deserved to win it. People can talk about how badly AC Milan played, but they got that bit of luck you need and inzaghi took his chance in the second half. Liverpool missed a handful of chances and they didnt create enough. If you score your chances then I guess you deserve to win, its as simple as that.

However, you've got to include the other people that run the club and they did cheat. Milan were very very lucky that juve, lazio and fiorentina got relegated, but they somehow managed to stay in serie a. I know that the decisions were appealed, but you were very lucky not to have gotten relegated in the first place. Having to play the preliminary stage isnt a punishment, its easy for a team like ac milan to get through those preliminary rounds. The points deduction isnt a fair punishment either. Compare your punishment to juve's. I know that juve were the most heavily involved, but despite that, milans punishment was weak.

Anyway, Milan won in the end, so congradulations to them. They've been a fantastic team over the last 5 years. They've reached 3 finals in 5 years; thats one hell of an achievement.

and a very interesting take on the Arsenal takeover situation:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/thereporters/robertpeston/2007/05/halftime_at_arsenal.html

Arseblog has a good insight on the Cesc story, which hopefully is nothing more than absolute bullshit:

Right, let’s start with the whole Arsene Wenger being in Spain business. As reported yesterday on the columns section the boss was seen having dinner with a representative of Joseba Diaz, Cesc’s agent. Diaz also looks after Fran Merida. Marca put 2 and 2 together and reckoned that Arsenal could be selling Cesc to Real Madrid.

AS has gone a step further this morning alleging that Wenger said he’d want Cesc to be part of whatever project he was involved in, whether that was Arsenal or elsewhere. Cesc apparently confided in the boss that he wanted to make a ‘radical change’ in his life and that meant moving back to Spain to play in the Spanish league. That means a possible Wenger-Fabregas package, apparently. It all sounds rather fanciful you have to say, especially when you consider that Wenger also met with the agents of Jose Antonio Reyes to sort out his future.

As well as that Arsene is accompanied by Keith Edelman (plus another Arsenal staff member who was not identified) who is currently doing the work that the tall Oompa Loompa used to do. The idea of him hinting that he could he could offer himself and Cesc as package to a Madrid team that could still win the league under Capello and who have already signed a contract with Bernd Schuster in case they decide to sack the Italian is simply unthinkable.

“Keith, just cover your ears for a minute would you? Cheers! Now Mijatovic, I’ll be your new boss and I can bring Cesc with me and - Keith, no listening. Go ‘lalalalalalala’. Go on. Come oooooooon. Ok. Now, as I was saying…”

Here’s what I think. Wenger is over there to sort out the future of Reyes who could go to Atletico Madrid (who have apparently also expressed an interest in Rosicky), sort out the Baptista situation as well (the fact that Madrid don’t want to keep Reyes means Baptista would cost €20m and Arsenal will not pay that), and met with Cesc’s people as a matter of routine. There’s also the possibility his business with them could have been about Merida or about another young Spaniard we’re about to nick.

The unfortunate thing is that at some stage we are going to lose Cesc back to Spain and that’s what makes anything like this slightly worrying no matter how far fetched it is. That may not happen just yet but long term that’s where he sees his future and that’s fair enough. It’s his home and where his friends and family are. It’s normal. That means the press there, acting for the clubs who want to sign him him, will make the most of any situation and that, I hope, is what they’ve done here. There’s no need for me to say how important he is to us and how much we need to keep him. With an 8 year contract it would take a ridiculously massive offer for us to consider any transfer at this moment in time. However, I think this is the kind of crap we’ll have to go through each summer - is it a small price to pay for having such a talent?

Don't know why but that tickles my funny bone every time i look at that word.
I needed cheering up after last night.

Wow after all the trouble it took to get Gonzalez over here with the work permit we're just going to let him go like that.... then again he never did look comfortable in a Liverpool shirt.

Looks like we're going Left Winger hunting.

Richardson is on the market. He took world cup winner klebersons place in the team and he did score twice on his england debut. It just proves how much quality he has.

In hilarious news:

Teddy Sheringham, who was released by West Ham last week, looks like he is on the brink of joining Crystal Palace, which may well mean that next season he will line up alongside his SON Charlie.

And here is football365's first part of their season awards. They've got some funny awards, such as cesc fabregas's worst miss award. There' also a court attendee of the season and the winner of that sounds very hot.

Air-Kick Of The Season
Winner: Paul Robinson's meeting with Croatian fresh air. Oh how we laughed until we remembered England were about to be humiliated.
Runner-Up: Andriy Shevchenko's horrendous miss in the FA Cup semi-final. As he swung inaccurately at the ball, the Ukrainian injured a thigh muscle, resulting in his absence for Chelski's next two matches. Much to Jose's relief.

Anti-Climax Of The Season
Winner: The league meeting between Chelski and ManYoo at Stamford Bridge.
Runner-Up: The FA Cup meeting between Chelski and ManYoo at the new Wembley Stadium.

Winner: Thierry Henry's double act with Cesc Fabregas at Blackburn in January.
Runner-Up: Matt Taylor's 40-yard volley against Everton a month before.

Breakthrough Player Of The Season
Winner: Nemanja Vidic. Contesting the berth alongside Rio Ferdinand with Wes Brown at the start of the season, justifiably regarded as one of the Premiership's best defenders eight months later.
Runner-Up: Micah Richards. His performances at Citeh were not the stuff of legend (despite media claims to the contrary), but he did become the youngest-ever England defender and will probably move to Chelski this summer.

Brief Celebrity Of The Season
Winner: Darren Cann, the 'lying' linesman of the Snarling Cup final.
Runner-Up: Jacqui Oatley, the first female commentator to be heard on Match of the Day.

Call To Arms Of The Season
Winner: David Gold's programme notes for Birmingham's match with Stoke which asked 'whether Birmingham fans really deserve promotion' in response to a series of below-capacity gates. The game then duly recorded St Andrews' lowest attendance of the season.
Runner-Up: The programme notes of Leeds captain Kevin Nicholls that informed the club's fans 'we're in it together' ahead of the game with Sheffield Wednesday. It was subsequently revealed after the match that Nicholls had handed in a transfer request three days previously.

Cesc Fabregas' Worst Miss Of The Season
Winner: Missing an open goal against CSKA Moscow after rounding the goalkeeper.
Runner-Up: Missing the ball altogether whilst standing four yards in front of an unguarded net against Reading in March. Sixty minutes later he scored his first Premiership goal of the season - an own goal.

Court Attendee Of The Season

Winner: Tara Stout, ex-girlfriend of Simon Jordan who 'posed in a Union Jack bikini and high heels, then put on tiny shorts and a revealing top to face Bow Street Magistrates Court in central London' after being accused of harrassment. The Crystal Palace chairman won the case.

Description Of The Season
Winner: "I nearly swerved off the road. I yelled down the phone. I was so incensed. I was trembling with anger. I couldn't believe what I had heard" - Ashley Cole recalls his reaction to Arsenal offering to increase his wages to a paltry £55k per week.
Runner-Up: "No maturity and respect, maybe difficult childhood, no education, maybe the consequence of that" - Jose Mourinho puts Footballer of the Year Cristiano Ronaldo in a different perspective.

Fight Of The Season
Winner: The post-match brawl between Valencia and Inter Milan that brought the memorable observation from Jamie Redknapp: "Here it comes! Here it comes! BANG!"
Runner-Up: The Carling Cup final handbags between Arsenal and Chelski. In comparison, it wasn't even handbags - more like a kiss chase.

Flop Of The Season
Winner: Khalid Boulahrouz. So bad that Jose Mourinho preferred an injury crisis and playing Michael Essien in defence to selecting the £7m summer signing.
Runner-Up: Michael Ballack. Still a horrific waste of money despite arriving on a Bosman Free as his £130,000-a-week wages produced four league goals and no discernable effort. Unlike Ballack, at least Shevchenko tried.

Football365's Favourite F365 Headline Of The Season
Winner: 'Liverpool Player Told Policeman That He Loved Him' - March 2007.

Hat-Trick Of The Season

Winner: Peter Crouch's perfect hat-trick against Arsenal, in which a goal was scored with his right foot, his left foot and head.

Ill-Fated Association Of The Year

Winner: Steve McClaren appointing Max Clifford to be his media advisor. Prompting the use of such words as 'rat', 'sinking' and 'ship', Clifford ended the association two days after the debacle in Croatia.

Injury Of The Season
Winner: Preston winger Simon Whaley being ruled out for the rest of the campaign after attempting to heed a call of nature in the middle of the night during a mid-season training trip to Spain. Unfortunately he banged into a coffee table in his hotel room, which in turn resulted in the marble top of the table falling off and breaking his toe.
Runner-Up: Everton's Tim Cahill suffering knee ligament damage after being inadvertently fouled by team-mate Lee Carsley in a match against Aston Villa.

Injury-Prone Player Of The Year

Winner: Matthew Upson. Having missed seven months of football due to an injury suffered in a pre-match warm-up last April, Upson departed Birmingham for West Ham in a £6m deal in January. Due to a strain, his debut lasted 30 minutes. One month later, his comeback lasted 11 minutes. A further breakdown in training meant he didn't play again. "It has just been a disaster," confirmed Alan Curbishley.
Runner-Up: Louis Saha, who suffered a knee injury in January, a calf injury in February, a hamstring injury in March, and a reccurrence of the same injury a month later.

Ironic Book Title Of The Season
Winner: Cashley Cole's calling his autobiography 'My Defence'.

Arsenal have decided against turning forward Julio Baptista's loan deal from Real Madrid into a permanent transfer.

The 25-year-old Brazilian scored 10 goals in 35 appearances but found the net only three times in 24 Premiership appearances in his season at Arsenal.

"Arsenal have told me they are not able to buy me and so all I can do is return to Real Madrid," Baptista told Spanish newspaper Marca.

Baptista joined Arsenal, with Jose Antonio Reyes moving the other way.

The English league is very strong and very competitive with great teams

The Spanish season has not yet finished and no decision has been made on Reyes' future.

Baptista, who scored four goals in Arsenal's 6-3 Carling Cup win against Liverpool at Anfield in January, added: "I have enjoyed my season with Arsenal and in England.

"I adapted well. I didn't play much at first but finished much better. The first year is very difficult.

"The English league is very strong and very competitive with great teams. Manchester United and Chelsea are very strong and it is difficult to compete against their great squads."

Baptista joined Real from Sevilla for an initial fee of £13.8m in July 2005.

even though it's the right decision and I actually was quite vocal about getting rid of him, I still think it's a bit sad. I really wanted him to succeed, mainly because he's called the beast and he looks like one too. Such is life, goodbye.

Football365 talk about about yesterday's game

The author of the article says that Liverpool's performance was the best from an eglish side in a final and that rafa's tactics were good, but what let him down were the players on the bench.

Yeah, the general opinion seems to be the plan was fine, but the personnel were not. I'd have Crouch for sure up front. I've been banging the drum on Crouch against Milan for so long it's ridiculous. And Kewell over Zenden, though our options are so limited on that flank I can see why Zenden started. I mean, I didn't expect him to be good, but I also didn't expect him to drop an elephant turd of a game on us.

But whatever. Nothing can be done about that now. We did all we could.

And here is football365's first part of their season awards. They've got some funny awards, such as cesc fabregas's worst miss award. There' also a court attendee of the season and the winner of that sounds very hot.

There should be a "how did we not win it" section.

The one I'd vote would be Arsenal's demolition of Porto 0-0 at the Emirates if memory serves me right, it was hypnotic to watch. O_O

Okay, the statement from the UEFA guy ****ing stinks

"Collected responsibility of the fans"... what about collective responsibility of you letting fans throuhg 7 checks without checking tickets, thereby rewarding the people who ruin football and punishing the real fans.

Also - it's always tough talk when it's the English. I mean, our fans do have a bad element, but when any other country is involved it's a different story. See : death of leeds fans in Turkey "Oh, it's just the turkish passion..." ****ing cocksuckers.

Runner-Up: Louis Saha, who suffered a knee injury in January, a calf injury in February, a hamstring injury in March, and a reccurrence of the same injury a month later.

WTF. I didn't know he went through so many different injuries.

It was probably because of Berlusconi and not so much luck that helped Milan there.
