But I do not see how there will not be a huge debt being put on the club as someone has to repay the funds Kroenke puts down to buy the club. Its not like the board are just going to hand over the shares for nothing.
But maybe he has enough money to buy the club without having to take out a loan, or if he does take out a loan it wont be very big.

As though losing Henry isn't enough now the press smell blood and are going after Wenger.

And if Wenger was expecting a Henry departure they would have prepared a replacement in advance.

even if he did, that wouldn't make any sense for him, financially.

Say you have 100 million pounds and you buy something worth 100 million. If you loan an additional 100 million you can do so at something like maybe 6 or 7 %.

You can invest your own 100 million and make 10, 15 even 30 % on that. It's far more expensive to invest your own money.

Wow I am geniunely surprised that Henry is leaving Arsenal, I was joking about it I know but I never thought it'd happen. And judging by his letter, there seems to be a lot of problems behind the scenes for Arsenal, and if the news about Wenger not extending his contract is true, then that's horrible news because it'll mean the loss of Fabregas too.

I'm sure they will pull through this though, with £16+ million, they can buy a very good striker and they still have Van Persie.

In other news, Liverpool are still negotiating with Athletico about Torres, they're stubborn so-sos!

"Arsene has been part of my life for as long as I can remember," he wrote.

"Unfortunately and understandably, he has said that at this moment he will not commit to the club past the expiration of his current deal, which finishes at the end of the coming season.

"I respect his decision and his honesty but I will be 31 at the end of next season and I cannot take the chance to be there without Arsene Wenger and David Dein.

"This is solely my decision, no-one has forced me to do anything and I will represent myself in this transaction. I feel it is something I just had to do."

Henry, who has also been linked with European champions AC Milan, has also revealed why he decided to move to the Nou Camp ahead of other possible destinations.

"Barcelona are a wonderful club steeped in tradition and play beautiful football. I'm sure I will be very happy there," he continued.

"But I will miss the Arsenal fans dearly, they have supported me through thick and thin.

"They will always be in my heart, as will all the fans who make the game here so special. I will always have a special bond with Arsenal Football Club."

I don't honestly think there was anything wrong with his statement. Wenger is unwilling to confirm he will stay past the end of his contract as always and Henry doesn't want to risk being at Arsenal without him (and Dien).

Honestly, I think staying at a club for a manager and member of the board is crazy, but, it's his decision..

He did a great job for Arsenal over the past 8 years and I think we should remember that. I for one wish him all the great
failure
in the world at barcelona. =P

Seriously, I now obviously now hope that he never wins the Champions League and has to watch us lift the cup, but, other then that I hope he has a good time in Spain.

He'll always be part of the club just like Ian Wright and he knows it. :)

Fairwell Captain, hopefully you can play for us another day (I'm looking at you Ljungberg, you better have a testimonial!)!!!

You can invest your own 100 million and make 10, 15 even 30 % on that. It's far more expensive to invest your own money.

I dont really get it. Lets use your example again, but lets say someone had 200 million pounds and bought something for 100 million pounds. Why take a loan to buy that when you can use your own money? Taking a loan would mean that you have to pay interest, so you will make less profit. Imagine if he made a profit of 10 million pounds in one year. Now if he used his own money to buy a business then he gets to keep all of that and use it how he wishes, but if he invested money borrowed from a bank, then he would have to use the profit generated to pay interest.

As for this Kroenke and investment thing I believe he is worth ~ £2 billion but it is tied up in real estate. So if he sold his land in order to buy us it would make sense unfortunately I dont see that heppening.

let's put it this way:

you have 100 million in the bank (just an example, it won't be in the bank) making 20 % interest a year for you (20 million pounds)
you have a loan of 200 million that costs you 6 percent interest a year (12 million pounds)

so you have made 8 million pounds profit in just one year that you could use to pay back the loan or reinvest.

And you still have 100 million in the bank that you could use if you wanted to.

So, I just realised....... Arsenal now need a new captain...... The obvious choice is of course Gilberto. He's been captain whenever Henry has been injured, but, with his age do you think Wenger will choose a more permanent captain?

If note Gilberto the first person who comes to mind for me is probably Toure. That might just be because of time spent at the club though. :-/

I think Gilberto was an excellent captain last year and should get it.

The worrying thing is that every captain seems to leave us.

I think he was a good captain as well, but, how long will he be a first team player at Arsenal? Surely Wenger will want someone who will last. lol

let's just hope it isn't Fabregas
yeah I dont think it would be a good idea if it was fabregas. Gilberto or toure will get it, most likely gilberto. Having someone who will last for a long time would be nice, but you need a good leader more than anything.

Giving to cesc would be unreasonable. Its just added pressure. Now that henry's gone everyone will regard him as the best player in the team. For someone his age that is enough pressure, he doesnt need the pressure of being captain.

Toure should be captain imo, always thought that accolade suited a defender, and he can give that Adams drive for us once more.

I had a similar glum feeling when Vieira left us, he had just come off the back of a bad season aswell, and we coped well without him. Its a harder hit since Henry is our top goalscorer , but we did play alot of last season without him, and if VP had not got injured I think we would have faired better. VP is damned important to this club this coming season, along with Cesc, and I hope that if we invest in another striker, of which we HAVE TO, we get a player that hits them from anywhere like VP, and not try and walk the ball in the net. Thats why I would love Anelka to come back, or even someone like McCarthy.

Saviola and gudjohnsen are good options. Both will want to leave Barca now that henry's joined because they will be spending most of their time on the bench.

The suazo transfer is finally getting cleared up. He's going to be signing for Inter.

http://www.channel4.com/sport/football_italia/jun23i.html

Milan have officially announced they are pulling out of their contract for David Suazo, as he had already signed for Inter.

After Cagliari President Massimo Cellino admitted that a clause in the striker’s contract allowed him to be released for £9.4m to a club of his choice, the Rossoneri had little choice but to accept the ruling.

“Milan have a contract with Cagliari Calcio for the co-ownership rights to David Suazo,” read a statement on the website.

“However, later taking into account that the player had already signed a contract with Inter, we communicate that we are pulling out of the negotiations.

“Milan also wish to underline that they acted fairly in the affair and in full conformity of the national and international sporting rules.”

So now the only remaining piece of the puzzle is for Inter to announce the arrival of Suazo, which is expected over the weekend.

Originally it had been deemed an illegal move for the Nerazzurri to put pen to paper with a player who was still under contract, but it emerged that the clause released him for both overseas clubs and those within Italy.

“He didn’t even give me time to answer back, he sounded extremely certain,” noted Cagliari President Massimo Cellino. “I can only say that at this point I will leave the player free to make his path.”

This leaves Milan clutching at straws, particularly after news from Spanish paper ‘Marca’ this morning claiming that flop Ricardo Oliveira has requested a move to Real Madrid.

Yet this does all point in the same direction – that all of the European Champions’ funds will be poured into snatching a top star to play alongside Kaka and Ronaldo.

With Thierry Henry going to Barcelona for £16m, that leaves the door open for either Ronaldinho or Samuel Eto’o to walk away.

Milan have made no secret of their interest in the two Blaugrana players, although there are also options such as Chelsea’s Didier Drogba and former San Siro hero Andriy Shevchenko.

So now that Milan wont sign Suazo and Oliviera looks like he'll be leaving, it leaves them with ronaldo, inzaghi and gilardino, along with kaka as a side striker or attacking midfielder. It looks certain that they'll sign someone. Henry's move to barca could trigger some transfers, but I dont think Milan can sign ronaldinho because Laporta has said that neither ronaldinho or eto'o will leave.

Its rumoured that Nedved is going to retire.

http://www.channel4.com/sport/football_italia/jun23j.html

Pavel Nedved has said he’ll make his announcement next week and it’s reported the Juventus hero will hang up his boots.

“If there is no meeting with Juve, then Pavel will certainly retire,” revealed agent Mino Raiola in a warning to the club.

“He is capable of just about anything, but I will do everything I can to encourage him to keep playing.”

The midfielder had already considered retirement last summer after the 2006 World Cup, but opted to stay on to help Juve return to the top flight after their demotion in the Calciopoli scandal.

Now that promotion has been achieved and many new names are being signed for the club – including latest arrivals Tiago Mendes and Sergio Almiron – Nedved could opt to call it a day.

A meeting has been set up with the Bianconeri directors for next week, but issues over the length of his contract and promises of a future job as a director for the club may provide stumbling blocks.

Today’s newspapers in Italy report that Juventus are preparing for a 2007-08 without Nedved by seeking out Hamburg midfield dynamo Rafael Van der Vaart.

The Czech international and 2003 European Player of the Year has confirmed he will make a decision before June 30.

Nedved turns 35 in August and has been at Juventus since 2001, having previously played for Lazio, Sparta Prague and Dukla Prague.

It would be very sad if he did retire. Nedved is one of the greatest players Ive ever seen. he doesnt have all the fancy tricks, but he's one of the most consistant, effective and hard working players in the game. He's truly a legend. Its a shame that he could never win the CL because he's one of those players that has deserved it. In a way he's at fault for Juve not winning it in 2003 because he got a stupid booking at the end of the Juve - Real Madrid semi final that ruled him out for the final. he could have made all the difference. he was sublime that year and he receieved european player of the year during that year.

I don't even want to watch the Henry compilation, it's making me physically sick. I really can't believe he's leaving. But I guess I have to wish him good luck. I guess I'll just put his shirt in my attic because I'll look like a retard walking around in an Arsenal Henry jersey.

If that rumor about Tevez is true, that wouldn't be so bad. He's a great player. I was very impressed by him this past season. Hopefully we can pick someone up who will fill (somewhat) the shoes of Henry.

Steroyd said:
Hasn't Nedved never been in a CL final just like Paul Scholes?

Nope. He made a very silly tackle near the end of the semi final game against real madrid and got himself booked. If he played in that final, Juve would have won the CL.

Isnt it time to change the avatar h0pper?

Not until I find a proper one to replace this one. Maybe my next one will be Ronaldinho, Eto'o, Messi, and Henry in the showers. Part of me hates Barca uncontrollably for raping my team, but another part of me wants to see them play because they have the most amazing lineup. No, no, I hate them.

even though i'm not a Arsenal fan....this sucks simply because the premiership is losing such a great player, i cant believe Arsenal is letting him go because i dont think they will be able to replace him

Wait wait wait...Henry and Ronaldino at Barcelona? Holy shit, that's sweet. However, where the hell am I gonna catch Barcelona games? FSN only focuses on EPL. The side leagues that follow get fairly spotty coverage, and I don't remember seeing many Barcelona games, if any. Sorry if I'm a little late, I just woke up to hear this on the Beeb. PEACE.

I really don't see what's wrong with Henry's statement. I think he did need to come out and say something, especially after dedicating himself to Arsenal for the rest of his career last year. I'd have been more angry if I were an Arsenal fan if he'd said nothing, just left like he didn't care.

As for what he said, you wouldn't want him to be anything but honest. And it's not like he said anything we didn't already know; Dein's departure has caused unrest at the club and Wenger has said he'll see out his contract, but hasn't committed beyond that.

The board really need to back Wenger this summer. If Wenger doesn't believe he can bring in the players to make Arsenal as strong as with Henry, and if the new team isn't good enough to clearly show they can be successful (which I reckon means coming within at least 2 wins of the title if they don't actually win it, or taking the Champions League), I don't think he'll stay.

If Wenger goes, I'm convinced Fabregas goes, given his comments. And who else would Wenger try to take to his new club? Van Persie? Toure? It could be a disaster. Someone's going to drop out of the top 4 sooner or later, it's inevitable, regardless of what the paper's will try and convince you. Not to mention it might become a top 3 if Platini has his way.

I'm not suggesting Arsenal would become a mid-table side, they have too large a fanbase and too large a stadium for that. But without Wenger and some key players they could find themselves out of the running for titles for a while, and even if they brought in a good enough coach to keep Arsenal successful, they might well lose their style of play which appeals to so many of their fans. No one else in the Premiership plays like Arsenal, and that's squarely down to Wenger.

Of course it could all be fine, but why take the risk? Support Wenger, convince him to stay, keep those big players. Give him £50m to spend, it doesn't really matter if there's more debt to pay off in the long term, keeping Wenger has to be the priority.

there's nothing wrong about him releasing a statement.

But there was no reason to mention Dein (yet again) and there certainly wasn't any reason to mention Wenger's contract situation. What he is basically saying is that he believes that Wenger will be off and therefore he leaves now while he still can.

Even if he believes that, was there any need to mention it in an official statement? Was there the need for our former captain to come out and cause further speculation and doom and gloom? I really don't think there was. He could have left it at "I felt it was time to move on", that's fair enough, there's no need for him to search for cheap excuses that make him feel better about leaving. He is allowed to say what he wants, but either he is very naive or he feels the urge to rub it in.

That's what is wrong with his statement in my opinion.

fully agree on the Wenger part though

just to put my opinion about the Henry transfer in context: I honestly wish him all the best, he's been fantastic for us and I also really like him as a person. He was Arsenal and it's sad to see him go.

I couldn't sleep anymore at 6 in the morning thinking about bloody Henry. When I walked to the supermarket I felt completely empty, like somebody died or something. Horrible.

Hell we stole Fabregas off Barca for nothing, so I guess we owed them.

Er wait...we lost to them in the CL final last year didn't we? The mother****ers.

hadareud said:
Waking up to this statement.

I can't tell you how disappointed I am in Henry to come out with this. Thanks to him and this statement we will not only have a summer of doom and gloom but a whole year.

hold on. We don't know what happened exactly - but if the rumours are true, David Dein was basically trying to sell the club behind everybody's back.

No matter the intentions of Kroenke, this is something that would lead to the instant dismissal of anyone. The board had to act and they did.

You know what, if our captain thinks that Arsenal is David Dein it's best for all that he is gone. I can't tell you how much this pisses me off. I still love him, but good riddance.

Well if those rumours were true (though it's the first I've heard of it) then yeah, I can see how that would piss the board off. I'm just amazed at how sudden it was, or seemed to be anyway. And hell, it's not like we've heard Dein's side of the story.

I can't bring myself to view Henry as harshly as other Gooners, though I reckon most of the harshness is coming from the emotion of it all. Didn't see anything wrong with that statement either...what's Henry supposed to do, say nothing? Then he'd come off as arrogant, cold and aloof...in other words, a stereotypical Frenchman. :lol What made Henry so popular throughout the EPL is that he was anything BUT a stereotypical Frenchman, with the exception of his flair.

The funny thing is that if Wenger had committed to even an extra year beyond his current contract, Henry probably stays. It also shows that it really wasn't the lack of player buying that affected Henry's mood, at least publically. So hell, I'm going to blame Wenger.

**** you Wen......

Nah...can't bring myself to do it.

I'm going to make a prediction right now...Theo Walcott is going to step up MASSIVELY for us. That shoulder injury hindered him more than we knew.

I don't know why I'm taking this thing so well...I mean I thought for sure he was going to stay, the final sale price appears to be ****ing shit, and every Gooner hater on the planet is having a good ole' laugh at our expense. And that's not even getting into the "Wenger/Fabregas is next" stuff, which frankly is hard to count out anymore. But I think Arsenal will end up being okay this year if they can stay healthy, depending on the additions that are brought in. It's just a question of shoring up the defense and finishing their chances.

I agree. He needs to shut his mouth. The whole Dein fiasco is retarded. His comments and actions the past month have really pissed me off. I understand Dein was a great asset to Arsenal, but he left. Who cares? He doesn't play on the pitch, he's not scoring any goals for us. We could have been fine without him, but Thierry obviously was not loyal to Arsenal. He was loyal to Wenger and Dein. Let him go. I'm going to cheer my team on regardless of who plays for them. I just hope I can watch them compete at a high level.

Well, he didn't think it was time to move on. From what he's said, he's suggesting that if Wenger had told him he was definitely signing a new contract, he'd have stayed at Arsenal. He could have made something up I suppose, but he's just giving his honest reason for leaving; he wants to stay at an Arsenal with Wenger, he doesn't want to stay at an Arsenal without Wenger. Not when the other option is Barcelona anyway.

If Wenger could get Trezeguet, Saviola, Malouda, Drenthe and Sagna, I think that would do it. Probably wouldn't quite cost £50m, but I think it'd be beyond the £40m mark.

I honestly see Wenger at Barca next year as well. 100%. I'm sure him and Henry have discussed that and I'm sure that's the little scheme they're working on.

The statement is fine, I dont see anything wrong with it either, but previous things henry has said indicates that he's getting the idea that he's bigger than the club.

He may leave, but he would never do something like that

Gol TV is the exclusive home of Spanish Liga games in North America. And yeah, you can bet your ass I'll finally be ordering it...watching Barca play together the next few years is going to be almost silly.

Here's a thought...if Barca and Chelsea draw each other in the Champions League AGAIN (because Chelsea always has to play Barca and the Reds in the CL...it's just the rule), would Arsenal fans join Barca supporters in the away end to cheer Henry on?

For that matter, imagine what the spectacle will be like if Arsenal and Barca draws each other at some point? The street prices for the Emirates tilt would probably be some of the highest in the history of English football.

Man...I'll miss Henry.

The Arsenal board oughta look long and hard in the mirror. They might be taking it for granted that Wenger will just stay on. That would be a serious mistake. And hell, even he's begun to express some doubts that Arsenal can remain a title-contending club without additional investment.

Besides, I don't think Wenger will join Barca anyway...mainly because they're going to dominate Liga and Europe the next three years giving them no reason to replace Rikkard (they'd have canned his ass already otherwise).

Nope, if Wenger leaves, there's only one other job he's going to move for...and that's England. And while that would piss off the Arsenal fan in me because I don't see who the hell could come in to continue to instill anything close to the same style of play we currently enjoy, the England fan in me would be given genuine hope for the first time in 20 years.

Lots of players are more loyal to managers than clubs nowadays. You have Fabregas and Henry, Gerrard and Carragher telling Hicks and Gillet to keep Benitex as mnagaer if they want them to stay, Lampard and Terry stalling on contracts until they know Mourinho's future...even Blackburn have a similar situation. I'm convinced that when Hughes eventually goes he'll take our best players with him. After all, it's slightly different but the only reason we got Bellamy and Savage was because Hughes managed them for Wales.

He's rumoured to be the back up guy to Eriksson if Man City can't get him, but I don't think he'll go. Any other team in Man City's position, with all that money from a takeover and a big stadium and fanbase and I'd be worried, but I think if he goes for the Man City job he rules himself out of ever being United manager. If he did go though, I expect he'd want Pedersen, Bentley, Derbyshire, McCarthy, Reid, Nelsen...and I think they;d all want to go (whether they'd be allowed to or not is another matter).

I actually meant if Barca were the other option for Henry, but I could see Wenger at Barca next year. Thing is, if Rijkaard wins the title and CL next year (which there's a good chance of now with this signing), why would Barca get rid of him? He might leave willingly to manage Milan or something I suppose.

Madrid would be another option for Wenger, but again, will the position be open next year? Knowing Madrid...probably. If they keep Capello they might let him go next year. If they bring in a new coach and don't get IMMEDIATE success, well, you know Madrid, they'd let him go too.

Maybe I will say "F*** Wenger". Yes, he's done alot for the club but at the same time it is hard to see someone like that leave your team. It's the same way I feel about Henry leavnig. I love Thierry. I don't want to see him leave, but he is. So part of me wants to go over there and choke him to death, but another part of me wants to wish him luck and thank him for the great years of football he brought us.

It's hard whenever anyone who is a big part of your club decides to leave, but right now with Arsenal, it's not just one player. For now it is, but the club is very unsettled right now and Henry's departure could start a domino effect.

Wenger will leave eventually of course, even if he just retires. So the Arsenal board need a plan in place to replace him. Rijkaard is the obvious candidate, he would actually keep Arsenal's style of play. Problem is, chances of him being free to leave Barca are slim (unless Wenger was going the other way), and even if he was leaving there'd be serious competition for him. If Milan were after him I think he'd go there as he played there, but even then there'd perhaps be Chelsea, Madrid...it'd be hard for Arsenal to compete.

There are other people of course..Hiddink maybe (though I think he's heading for Chelsea), I'd even throw Hughes in there, I think he'd play very attractive football with a top team.

It needn't be any time soon though. Wenger's 57, but Ferguson's 65 and still going strong, and we know he's going to be there until 66 minimum. On that basis, Wenger could be there another 9 years.

I highly doubt Wenger will be there after next season. He won't extend his contract. All this doom and gloom is making me sick. I just want to make at least one nice signing and get the season going. Forget all this s***.

Lets see what happens for the rest of the transfer market. If wenger gets good financial backing, then he'll have less reason to leave. Its still early in the transfer window and there is plenty of time for transfers. United are the only big team to spend a lot of money very quickly, every other team have been taking their time with signings.

If henry had stayed at arsenal for the remainder of his career, I reckon there was a good chance that his shirt would retire with him too. It could still happen; his departure doesnt change what he's done in the past, but I think its less likely to happen.

Around the time that Ferguson was celebrating his 20th anniversary as United's manager, Wenger said that he doubts he'll manage another ten years. Anything could change of course, but personally I don't think he stays on beyond 2015 unless we win the next seven EPL titles with three trebles.

There's little chance Wenger goes to Madrid. What he's had at Arsenal (at least with Dein at the helm) was virtually unlimited decision power. What he lacked in funds, he made up for in terms of creative input. Thus the new training facility, the academy, Emirates stadium...all brain childs of Wenger.

At Madrid he wouldn't get a tenth of that control...even the biggest managers get blown out within a year or two, while the board constantly interferes. Maybe they're past that now, but it's hard for a leopard to change it's spots.

I think the only other team Wenger would like to manage is England. I think he's said that he'd love to take on that challenge one day if the timing was right, and he could probably do for them what he did for the Gunners...completely transform the side into a dynamic, quicker team that played attractive football instead of just hoofing it into the penalty area (unless it's Beckham...it's fine for him since his hoof's actually work).

Then again, maybe Wenger follows Dein to whichever club he decides to land with. I think there was talk of DD going to Bolton of all places. Either way I doubt he stays out of the game long.

Oh, BTW...

You know, I didn't notice it the first time I read that letter...what really makes it for me is the way he thanked everyone in the country. With the possible exception of Spurs supporters who he seemed to legitimately dislike (and even then I think he was just playing it up), he's always talked about his affection for fans throughout England, both in the way they support their own teams and in the way they gave Henry such respect. Hell, he rates them far above his national fans of France.

It'sthe sort of thing that's seldom seen from foreign athletes, and it's something that I think is incredibly cool. I think the fact that some (or a lot) of Arsenal fans are disappointed to see the league lose a player of his caliber shows just how respected he is, and that's a pretty strong testament to both his game and the way he's carried himself (even with his er, diva moments).
