I don't think either one is good enough to replace Henry and Trezeguet is older, so I'd maybe go with Anelka. I don't know, to be honest I would rather go with something new.

Talking about goalscoring records, let's look at Huntelaar:

2002-2004 PSV 1 (00)
2002-2003 → De Graafschap (loan) 09 (0)
2003-2004 → AGOVV (loan) 35 (26)
2004-2006 SC Heerenveen 46 (34)
2006- Ajax 48 (37)

If we are talking about goalscoring records, Drogba (for instance) is nothing but a second tier striker compared to Henry and Van Nistelrooy. Maybe Huntelaar could be the next big one.

Who do you think was better, bergkamp or henry? I was having this conversation with a few friends and they thought that bergkamp was the better player, but I disagreed. Its very difficult to decide between the two. Both of them were excellent. I'd say that Bergkamp has better technique, but Henry has got speed and his technique is almost just as good, so thats why I chose him.

you can't really compare them, since they are such different player types. I would like to think that they were on the same level, for different reasons.

He might be, but don't take Anelka over Trezeguet just because he's a couple of years younger. That'd be like Barca passing over Henry and going for Saha, ie. crazy.

I say absolutely go for Huntelaar, though there have been plenty of strikers who scored a lot of goals in Holland and didn't manage it elsewhere (Kezman for example, Kuyt didn't exactly take off). At least with Trezeguet you know he's scored at the highest level, but Huntelaar could be a good risk.

There's hardly anyone out there that can replace Henry. He's been on a different level to other strikers. The only one that could mtahc his achievements were ruud and he could only match the goal scoring; ruud wasnt the overall player that Henry was. So you either pay money for someone who is proven or take the risk on someone who has got the potential to become great

Huntelaar is a good option. His goalscoring record is impressive, but that doesnt guarantee premiership success. As mama pointed out, kezman and kuyt were great goalscorers in the dutch league, but kezman was a compleyte flop and kuyt has been average, but I wouldnt call kuyt a disappointment, I think we're going to see much better things from him next season.

I think owen should be considered. I think he's still got it. Him and van persie could form a great partnership. You could get him for cheap and he could be a huge success. £10 million for someone like Owen is a bargain.

We're all shocked that Henry's left, regardless of who we support, but I dont think it will really kick in until the premierleague starts and we dont see him there. Its obviously going to hurt more for arsenal fans, but for the rest of us, its going to be such a disappointment not seeing him play everyweek.

I'm convinced that, if Owen leaves Newcastle this summer, it'll be last day of the transfer window, or last couple of days.

He's not gonna leave unless it's to one of the top 4 (or possibly a CL club abroad), but they're hunting other strikers at the moment. I think the only reason they're not after Owen (as far as we know) is worries about his fitness, but if it comes down to the last couple of days and they've failed to get the other strikers they want ('cos a club won't sell, they don't want to leave, they go elsewhere...), paying not that much for Owen might start to look a lot better than going the season without that finisher.

That sounds like a reasonable assumption. Owen for £10 million is such a good deal, you wont find a better deal for a striker. Obviously the problem is his fitness and at the moment there isnt any way to see if he's got his injury problems behind him, but at the price dont you think its worth the risk? Id rather spend £10 million on owen than £25 million on torres. I think Arsenal should look at getting gudjohnsen and owen for a total of £20 million. Neither are better than henry, but Owen could turn out to be fantastic and if he isnt, then you've got a proven goalscorer in gudjohnsen. They could either do that or take the risk of making a big money signing for someone like Huntelaar.

Vieri's being linked to Spurs. I could see that happening, he's free and I know he can speak English as he spent some of his childhood in Australia, so there shouldn't be too much problem adapting.

He'd obviously replace Mido who's on his way out, though I think he'll only go if he doesn't realise he's going to be 4th choice striker behind (probably) Berbatov, Keane and Bent. I dunno if Bent will be ahead of behind Keane to be honest.

Still, with the number of games Spurs have to play (being in the UEFA Cup again), he probably wouldn't be unhappy with the amount of games he'd get. Even Mido got 13 starts and 10 sub appearances last year.

I think its going to be difficult enough to keep keane, berbatov and bent happy. All three of them are good enough to start and I dont think Jol will have a main partnership. I think that those three could be enough to play in all the games..

Well if you're playing 2 strikers you need at least 4 in the squad. At 34 I'm not sure Vieri would want to play more often than Spurs would let him anyway, he'd just get tired.

Well I think things might be slightly different at spurs because they'll be swapping more often than strikers at other clubs because they all very good. Lets say that spurs play 50 games in a season, then those three strikers will share those games equally, so each one will get to play around 32 games each. The other thing that could happen is that berbatov is on for most of the games, whilst bent and keane play an equal amount of games alongside hm. I dont think bent will be treated life defoe and not get as much play time as keane and berbatov. You dont spend £16 million on a striker to make him a substitute striker that will only play a handful of games.

Obvioulsy that will only work if everyone stays fit and you cant hope that it will happen. Its alwasy beest to have extra cover, but if those 3 do stay fit, then the fourth choice striker is going to have very little opportunities to play. So yeah, Vieri would be a good choice when you consider that he's quite old and doesnt have the fitness to play so many games. If he's given a nice contract im sure he'll be more than happy to keep the bench warm.

Cannavaro could be making a return back to Juve

http://www.channel4.com/sport/football_italia/jun24b.html

Fabio Cannavaro could be making a shock return to Juventus after a long telephone conversation with director Alessio Secco.

The captain walked out in the wake of the Calciopoli scandal and their demotion to Serie B, but now that the Bianconeri are back in the top flight, the door is open for a comeback.

Cannavaro crowned a superb 12 months with the Liga title for Real Madrid, having already been named European and World Player of the Year.

When he was asked about the possibility of returning to Juventus last week, he told newspapers “they have my number and that of my agent.”

It seems the message did not go unheeded, as ‘Tuttosport’ claim that general manager Jean Claude Blanc and director of sport Secco have been holding negotiations over the phone and will meet with agent Enrico Fedele next week.

The main stumbling block is over wages, as Juve will not match the £3m per season he will receive until 2009 under the terms of his Real Madrid contract.

The Bianconeri are having a complete overhaul following their promotion and have already signed Cristian Molinaro, Zdenek Grygera, Domenico Criscito and Daniele Gastaldello for the defence, with Federico Balzaretti, Robert Kovac and Igor Tudor departing.
He shouldnt be allowed back to the club. He decided to leave them during a huge struggle and now that they're getting back onto their feet he thinks its fine to walk back into the team. He's a good player, but he clearly doesnt have the club in his heart. This report just backs this up because the problem is now over wages. If he did care about the club he would never have left them. Some people think that for most players in his situation it wouldnt be right to sign him, but since he was the captain of the world cup winning side he is an exception. Well I dont agree with that at all. He shouldnt be accepted back after walking away when they needed him most.

Gold Cup predictions anyone?

I'm going with US 1 - Mexico 0 in another ugly affair. Tensions within the Mexican team are high, and there have been enough distractions the last few days (Castillo-Hugo clash) that I think they have lost focus. The 60,000 Mexican fans will have them playing hard, but it won't be enough.

(I hope the ref that did the Mexico/Guadeloupe semifinal handles this one, as I thought he had the best performance of the tourney reffing-wise.)

Update for you as I am all fantastic...

I'm due to get my laptop back from repairs this week. I know you've missed me, but only a few more days! Hang in there.

I would like to see Arsenal pick up Owen. So what if he wasn't fit last season. Take a f***ing risk. After what's happened in the past 3 days I'd say it's time for Arsenal to spend some money and bring someone in even if they are risking it with a player like Owen.

Owen is a great striker and we need someone up front with Van Persie who is an experienced finisher. I do not want to see Anelka come to Emirates and Adebayor just doesn't have the confidence and experience to be a starter yet. Maybe in a season or two. I was impressed with him this season, but I still think he needs a bit of work.

Owen could be our answer to Henry leaving. Without a name like that up front I think it will be tough for us to score as many goals as we need.

Apparently Rafa blocked Owen from coming to Anfield as Newcastle offered a swap deal for Owen <--> Bellamy / Riise. Rafa knows how to hold a grudge.

Ugh - I honestly have no idea. Usually I'm pretty confident going into these because of the US' track record at home against Mexico, but the defense has been awful this tournament. I could see Mexico pinging in a few goals quickly, or things could go as usual. It's a huge game with the winner getting an invitation to the Confederations Cup, so I'm sure both sides are up for it. I'm just frustrated that we're playing a home game which will essentially be an away game because of the Mexican fanbase in Chicago. Sucks, but what are you going to do.

Hooray! Good to have you back, amigo. Oh, and my laptop is starting to crap out, so perhaps I'm next to be MIA for a while. :(

I still question whether or not he can get a full season together uninjured. He just seems really fragile to me at the moment. I hope for his and England's sake that isn't the case, but I just feel like there are a lot of smaller players that carry lots of injury problems like this late in their careers.

Thought the pic was funny with the article.

I had no internet practically all day I was so bored I started watching. *ugh* Athletics. ~_~

Somethings Finally Stirring At Anfield

I’m not sure what technical problems caused the site to crash for the last few days but it’s great to have it back up and running again, as I was really starting to get withdrawal symptoms. We still haven’t made any real moves in the transfer market since my last blog, but there have been some interesting developments over the last week.

We are still pretty much in the position of having to rely on rumours and speculation in regard to our transfer targets but at least the scatter gun approach of the press in linking us to just about every footballer on the planet, seems to have died down a little and we are now starting to see the same few names consistently cropping up, with at least some degree of back up. How valid these links will prove to be, remains to be seen, but I think its fair to say that something finally appears to be stirring at Anfield.

Firstly, the one player we know for sure that the club has made an approach for is Wet Spam’s Israeli international Yossi Benayoun. Although he could hardly be described as being among the more glamorous names linked with the club in recent weeks, he is nevertheless a signing that I would welcome. We all know that there is a severe shortage of creative talent in our squad at the moment and Benayoun would be a player who fits into that category. I saw him play for Israel against Ireland a couple of years ago and the bastard tore our defence apart in that game with his skilful play.

Although he may not seem to be an immediate candidate for our first eleven, he certainly has Premiership experience and I think at about £4million he would be great value. Besides this, I think we also have to keep in mind that Rafa is trying build a strong squad of players and I certainly don’t want to see us in a situation where we go limping out of the domestic cup competitions again, because we don’t have enough strength in depth.

After Benayoun things start to get a little bit sketchy, but there’s no doubt about the name of the player who is on everybody’s lips at the moment, Fernando Torres. Interestingly, I put a poll up on my Vital Liverpool site which has been running for more then two weeks, asking fans who would be the striker they would most like to see us sign over the summer, and the result was;

Torres 33%
Tevez 28%
Owen 10%
Eto’o 9%
Villa 9%
Henry 5%
Huntelaar 4%
Bent 2%

You can count me among the 33% that voted for Torres but I would also have no objections to Tevez and I will be a very happy man if we manage to sign either. As for the other names in the poll, I don’t think Owen is Rafa’s type of player and I don’t think he will leave Newcastle for at least another season. I never really thought the signing of Eto’o was on the cards, there’s no doubting his ability but there are big question marks about his temperament and he would cost an absolute fortune.

Villa is a good player but I have my doubts about whether he could cut it in the Premiership. The links to Henry were a total joke and I’ve just heard that he has now apparently signed for Barca, things really seem to be unravelling at Arsenal. Huntelaar would be a good signing but not as our main striker and Bent of course has plenty of experience and goals to his credit in the Premiership but the price Charlton are looking for is ridiculous.

So that brings me back to Torres who I think is a brilliant player and would be an excellent signing. He’s averaging about a goal in every three games at the moment with 82 goals in 220+ games as captain for Atletico Madrid and 14 goals in 42 games for Spain. Although this may not be the most prolific of ratios, it’s not too shabby either and the guy is still only 23 with bags of ability. Its been pretty well documented that Liverpool have had a delegation over in Madrid but as ever the stumbling block is the price.

Torres has an escape clause in his contract set at £27million and it appears that Atletico are unwilling to move from this valuation (click here) . This is also the case with another of our targets, Roma’s Brazilian winger Alessandro Mancini. He is another great player and reports in Italy have claimed we have had a £13million bid rejected by Roma, who are unwilling to sell what they see as one of their key players and are in fact trying to get him to sign a contract extension (click here) . If its true that these two players are our primary targets then it would certainly explain the delay in our transfer activity.

Both clubs involved appear to be genuinely unwilling to sell and it seems that the only way they will budge is if we cough up the cash. And whether we pursue some of the other targets we’ve been linked with, such as Malouda etc, may ultimately depend on how these two deals pan out.

There are some fans who question whether we should be paying out this kind of money for players and for me the answer is quite simple, yes we should.

The price tag is not down to the player, its not down to Rafa and its certainly not down to us, it’s the clubs who set these prices and its down to them to work things out. If we are unwilling to match these kind of valuations then we shouldn’t be wasting our time pursuing these type of players and should move on to some of the lesser targets on our list.

However, if this proves to be the case then please lets not have any more of these press conferences where Gillett and Hicks are banging on about making us the biggest club in the world blah, blah, blah. To be the best, you need the best players and the best players cost the most money, and it really is as simple as that, so it’s time for our American owners to either shit or get off the pot!

Interesting on how it could be that whatever else we do in the transfer window hinges, on what big name signings, almost like a Domino effect, at least I hope it's that and not the other end of the spectrum where there could be unrest at Anfield.

I'd block that too. If I wanted Owen for Riise and Bellamy, I'd just buy the guy and sell the other two elsewhere and make a profit. That's just Newcastle terrified they'll lose Owen for £10m, and trying to get something good out of it.

:lol

:lol Even his facial expression looks perfect...

It would be cool as hell if Henry was brought back for our home opener and given an honourary send off. I imagine Liga starts up at least a few weeks after EPL anyway, based on how late their season finished this year. And maybe his number could be retired, or at the very least honoured. I think it would be a nice gesture for all involved.

The way things currently sit, I'm almost inclined to just go with the strikers we have, though I suppose we need a veteran to replace Henry's experience. Prior to Henry's departure, I never wanted another striker anyway...an attacking left winger is the player I've felt the Gunners have been missing for far too long. Persie is guaranteed to score 20 goals a year, Adebayor I think will rise to a new level, Bendetar sure seems confident enough in his abilities to do some damage off the bench.

And of course there's Walcott, who after being in the spotlight a year ago has almost been forgotten now (might be a good thing). Theo I think is the key...he was an incredible X factor for us in the first half of last season, scored some amazing goals for the England U21 side, scored that beauty in the Carling Cup final, then slipped away as his shoulder injury got progressively worse. Now that it's repaired I think he could do some damage for us, though he's probably still a year or two away from being a frontline striker.

Anyway, I do not want Anelka...**** him. I'd take Trez for a reasonable fee, or Owen for ten. Can't worry about the injuries at this point...everybody is an injury risk. If he can stay healthy though, he will produce for us. It would be awesome to see him wearing an Arsenal shirt, something I've wanted to see for a few years now.

Ultimately, I've maintained all along that scoring up front isn't our biggest issue...it's scoring from the midfield that's been our achilles heel. Fabregas and Rosicky have enough talent to score 10 to 15 goals a year, and if they can do that, that'll take pressure off whichever forwards we have to produce. We also need to produce better from corners and free kicks, which is where Gallas and Toure will come in (though they're hardly the tallest CB pairing in the world).

Yaya Toure is in Barcelona discussing a move too.

I wonder who else they'll buy. Probably a couple of defenders, maybe another striker if Gudjohnsen is going with Saviola.

Wonder how Madrid will respond. They'll probably buy Ronaldo, Kaka and Fabregas knowing those crazy guys.

Barça seems to have offered 12m € and Giuly for Chivu and it looks like it could be done soon. Then either Abidal or Dani Alves (hopefully Alves...).

I still don't know what the hell is Rijkaard going to do when he has Henry, Etoo, Messi and Ronaldinho all available. Another striker is very unlikely even if Saviola, Giuly and Gudjohnsen leave...we still would have two more to go (Ezquerro and Maxi, both should stop playing football by the way)...and we get Dos Santos and Krkic from Barça B to the first team too.

Madrid will go insane as usual and buy Kaka for 80m €.

I don't really know Chivu, but it's the right position anyway.

Oh yeah, Krkic, they don't need another striker then.

I'd just leave if I was dos Santos. Go someowhere he'll actually play for a while and he can maybe go back someday, like Fabregas.

Tough first half for the US. Mexico had the better of the play - we're really missing Bradley in the center and Hejduk on the right to settle down Guardado and Castillo. Again there have been some pretty mystifying tackles leading to cards - Bocanegra with another awful one on the left side. The US needs more pace at the back.

The US could have scored twice if not for some great goaltending. Hopefully we can pull one back and make it interesting, but we do a lot better scoring on the break rather than trying to break down a somewhat bunkered/conservative defence.

Barcelona fans, what do you know of Marc Crosas? I don't know how I missed the news, but while looking at Barca's B squad I noticed that apparently Benitez wants to take him on loan for next season. The player's willing as "After Barca, English football is my passion", and apparently Barcelona would like to send him out on loan somewhere to get some experience, as it's a difficult are of the pitch to break into at Barca.

I know he's a central midfielder, but what sort of player is he? Defensive? Attacking? Creative? Or in Liverpool terms, Mascherano, Gerrard, Alonso?

Wenger is allegedly being offered a new 3 year contract in the next few days. I wonder if that's a good move (if true), since he said that he wouldn't think about a new contract until next year.

By the way - Wenger has never signed a new contract until his running one was over or close to, so it is not at all unusual that he wants to wait.
