Thats not a surprise. There's quite a few possibilities. I thought it could have been friedel, but you said you've got james in goal. The other players I'm thinking it could be are pedersen, McCarthy or bently

I had McCarthy but in my quest for Cristiano I dropped him.

As for my team, well I haven't worked on the roster yet. Just used the fantasy default to start things off. I'll probably get to it this weekend. :D

Did you used to be radicalbunny?

Dyer was left out of the Newcastle side who beat Celtic tonight entirely, not even on the bench, so it looks like he's going to leave. Man City might be interested, but I'm guessing he'll end up at Spurs or West Ham. Spurs might be particularly interested now they've missed out on Petrov.

Niall Quinn, Sunderland chairman, has accused West Ham (among other clubs) of spending a fortune, and breaking the bank.

...how so?

West Ham's buys:

Bellamy - £7.5m
Parker - £7m
Faubert - £6.1m
Ljungberg - £3m
Wright - free

= £23.6m

West Ham's sales:

Reo-Coker - £8.5m
Harewood - £5m
Benayoun - £4.5m
Konchesky - £3.25m
Mears - £1m

= £22.25m

hmmmm

He then goes on to say that if he were spending that much money, he'd be going after players the top 4 go after.

...does he have a clue? Has he seen United's spending? Or Liverpool's?

OH NO THEY'VE SPENT LESS THAN £1.5M ON SOME PRETTY GOOD PLAYERS AT REASONABLE PRICES, HOW IRRESPONSIBLE!

dickhead

I honestly think West Ham will be a mid table team this season. Eggert is serious about the team and wants them to be contenders (as all owners do but I tihnk he's doing it right). West Ham deserve to be a premiership team and I think in the next few years we'll see some major growth.

It's really too bad what happened to my cousin. The picture of him up front with Tevez is so vivid in my mind lol.

You're forgetting though all the talk of supposedly ridiculous salaries that West Ham are allegedly paying. That would make a huge difference in swaying players to join West Ham.

Still can't believe Lucas Neill rejected offers from higher tier clubs like Liverpool in favor of staying. This was obviously one of the factors.

And can I get in on the prediction pool, too? Man Utd 2 - Chelsea 1.

Well he didn't mention salaries, just transfer fees. And he can talk, they;ve tried to buy Gordon for £8m, Baines for £6m and actually managed to get Richardson for £5.5m! Talk about overspending.

Dyer's a good player, but it doesn't matter as you're not gonna get him. He wants to move back closer to his family in Ipswish, and while Manchester is nearer than Newcastle, it's still not near at all. He'll go to a London club.

I did see you linked with Curtis Davies today though, he'd be a great buy.

Looks like Blackburn are closing in on the signing of Santa Cruz. Don't want :(

Heinze is trying so hard to move to Liverpool. It looks like he really will take this to court in an attempt to move.b Apparantly, he's hired Liverpools lawyer.

http://www.football365.com/story/0,17033,8652_2622773,00.html

Its really disappointing to see this happen as a United fan. I could understand him being frustrated by not getting much first team football due to Evra playing so well, but this isnt the right way to make a transfer. Wanting to move from United to Liverpool is bad enough, but now he's taking it a step further by trying to push for this move in court.

I think he's lost all respect from United fans if he goes ahead with this. If he wins, then he'll be the first United player in 43 years to move from United to Liverpool and us United fans wont be happy about it at all. If he doesnt win the case, then we still wont like him because he desperately wanted to move and it shows that he doesnt want to play for us.

I can't imagine Ferguson would want to keep him now, he just doesn't want him going to Liverpool. If no one else bids though, kind of an awkward position.

If they let Silvestre go to Lyon though, and Heinze doesn't want to play for them...well probably need to buy a new left back. I mean, it's not desperate as O'Shea can be the reserve left back, but that's not ideal.

Thats not a good sining. I just looked him up on wikipedia and it says that he's scored 29 goals in 155 appearances! He's also been quite injury prone.

I really don't think silvestre will go if heinze does. We don't have any money to spend on a left back, so we cant really afford to lose both of them. However O'shea could turn out to be ideal cover because he did start his career at left back.

Liverpool aren't impressing me particularly again. They are without Torres, Gerrard and Mascherano, but given Rafa's rotation policy, the team playing Portsmouth today could well be put out from time to time.

I'm hoping to see Lucas second half, he seems to be on the bench.

If you can't identify yourselves here for whatever reason, do it at the fantasy league forum, you can find it by going to the gaf premiership.

had, you're the admin of this league right? I assume you have the power to boot people? Perhaps I'm just a cruel bastard, but if people haven't identified themselves by the start of the season, I think they should be booted. The whole fun of it is knowing who we're beating or losing to.

They have plenty of time, another 2 weeks. It's not my decision, but I'd boot them (assuming it's possible) after that.

Heh. Yeah, we should do that.

Btw, Ratcage is Real United. He posted at the top of this page. Go Bears!

Portsmouth won 4-2 on penalties.

Now everyone point and laugh at Torres, who couldn't even score his penalty. To be fair, he looks like the most dangerous striker they have generally, good touches, gets in good positions...but he just can't finish. Which is why he'd be a good buy if Liverpool did have a top finisher to play alongside him.

Is a new thread going to be made for the prediction league? I don't know about anyone else but I'm finding it really ahrd to find all the information about it inbetween all the other, and perfectly legitamate, football news and talk.

I only log on once or twice a day and so I find most of the information on several pages and it becomes quite a chore. However I realise the massive amoutn of effort people are putting into this so if it turns out it's better as it is then of course I'll persevere with it.

Hope this doesn't offend anyone as that was not my aim at all!

It is getting a little messy in here. Not sure if we should have another thread for predictions and the fantasy league, and then just save this one for general commentary. I could go either way on this....

I guess my concerns would be:

1) If it'll be even more disruptive to have news in two places
2) If the mods won't like having two football/soccer threads floating around. Not sure if there's a precedent involving another sport.

I think we can have a seperate thread for predictions, though people should remember to post in the main football thread whenever new predictions are added, just to say to check the other thread.

I don't think we need a seperate thread for the fantasy league, that's already handled seperately on the official site. All we'd be doing here is discussing it, there are no important announcements people need to see.

EDIT: Found fantasy baseball and american football threads, so I don't see why we couldn't set up another.

search through Haudreds posts, he set it up.

Dont think we need a seperate thread for fantasy, definitely need one for predictions though. But make it just for the actual predictions, no chit-chat about predictions, that should make it easier for Cornballer to work with. Just make 1 each week with the decided matches (decided here I guess) and participants will just post their predictions.

What version do you have of PES? I've been looking for more people to play on LIVE as when I play ranked I always manage to play against the people in the top 1000 =/

I've made a fantasy team, but I'm thinking of just forgetting about it and pulling out. I get really interested in them at the beginning, but after a couple of weeks I get bored of it. I'll try to keep up with it this year and I'll see how it goes.

Just got back from the game. Eh, I dunno, Torres looked pretty good. Had a couple of chances, but I wasn't annoyed that he missed them (one was a good save from James). Kuyt though, what the hell? He comes deep for the ball, bunch of awkward touches, loses it. Picks it up and runs with it, loses it. Tries to spread it wide, takes too long, loses it. And finishing?!

Before the game, the Liverpool starters indulged in a bit of shooting practice against Reina. A trainer stood on the edge of the D, passed the ball to the players, who passed it back with one touch, and he laid it off for them to take first time.

Sissoko, predictably, hacked it wildly into the crowd.

Agger tucked it calmly away.

Riise belted it. Reina probably should have saved it, but he might have broken something if he tried.

Pennant, predictably, hit it straight at Reina.

Babel hit it right in the top corner.

Alonso hit a low, precise drive into the corner.

Even Steve Finnan slid it past Reina.

Then Kuyt ran on and smacked it high.

All those who missed had to try again. So back came Sissoko to find the bottom corner. Pennant curled it high into the top corner.

Kuyt? Straight at Reina.

So he was the only one who came back for a third go. And he curled it wide of the post. And then gave up and went to the changing room.

There is SOMETHING FUNDAMENTALLY WRONG when he can't even hit the target in practice.

You'd have £10m to spend on a left back if Silvestre and Heinze went.
I think the glazers would keep that money instead of giving it to fergie to spend. We've already spent 50 million quid and its likely to be even higher when we buy tevez. I think the glazers let ferige spend that money as long as he makes some by selling players.

Well it's like I said a while ago, Kuyt is the one who needs replacing if he doesn't get his act together. He's there to be the finisher, and he's not doing his job. All the other strikers are adding something, be it pace, height, technical skill, link up play...but the finisher is still lacking.

On Torres though, I don't just base it on this game. I must have seen him have 10 good chances across the friendlies now, not even including the penalty, and they're often chances he's created himself...and he hasn't put one of them away. And that goes along with his goalscoring record in Spain.

BTW, re: Kuyt... is it just me or does he look like he's put on a few pounds? I haven't seen him on TV but I saw him live in Athens and now here, and somehow he looks... bigger.

I didn't see the last friendly, only the goals, so I'm keeping a fairly open mind on Torres. His goalscoring record in Spain terrifies me, don't get me wrong, but I'm hoping (praying?) that I'm wrong. It's encouraging to see that he is creating his own chances though; Kuyt, Crouch and Voronin can't do that, and sometimes I think we lack ideas. That chance he had in this game where he cut to the right of an off-balance defender is something I honestly don't think any of our strikers since Michael Owen would have created, and it's so simple really.

And I noticed the old boys put away their spot-kicks while the n00bs didn't. I'm thinking they need a little more practice to uphold Liverpool's absurdly good record with penalties (not counting friendlies, I think it's something like 11 wins, one loss).

To be honest Torres is going to be one of the most interesting stories this year.
I don't believe what he's done in the past is going to count for anything. 20 plus Million means that he has to do it when it counts.

True, a show of strong goal scoring form in friendly play would help to ease fears or instill confidence. But its important that he does it when it really counts, in the League. I've seen players show good form in pre-season and then dissolve away to be forgotten over the course of a season.

I wanna see Torres in a run of REAL matches, the season can't come soon enough for me. Over the course of the season we'll get to see if Liverpool have the player they so desperately seek.

In other words lets wait and see. Rafa obviously sees something in the kid though to spend such a huge fee.

Adebayor, Rosicky and Walcott to miss Emirates Cup
By Richard Clarke

Arsenal will be without three attackers for the Emirates Cup.

Emmanuel Adebayor, Tomas Rosicky and Theo Walcott are all suffering the effects of the Club's recent nine-day training camp in Austria and will miss the tournament at the weekend. However the injuries are not long term.

"At the moment, not everybody's match fit," said Arsene Wenger at Friday's press conference. "We worked very hard in Austria and there was such heat that we have lost Emmanuel Adebayor, Tomas Rosicky and Theo Walcott for the tournament.

"The good news is that it is a question of days not weeks. They will be OK for Ajax and everybody will be ready for the start of the season."
